so. basically after through passing customs roughly half my flight was shuffled into this corridor made of construction materials with no windows and no agents to tell us what the fuck was going on or why we were there. we stand around for about 40 min with rumors circulating about why the hell we’re there, because no actual agent to clarify. about twenty of us were all trying to make the same hour and a half connection to [my redacted final destination]. line not moving even an inch, no info, we are very literally stuck in this windowless corridor with no signs or information. eventually agents come by and tell us that our entire flight was “randomly selected” for “additional screening” involving a bag check and ANOTHER covid test. this is apparently a “new policy of customs canada” (????). (no consideration at all was made to the fact that this was going to take 2+ hours and a huge chunk of the flight had connections in under that time. we also were given no warning whatsoever that this might be ??? happening.) we ask if those of us with connections very soon can jump the line. resounding no. the agents assure tho that we’ll definitely be able to find new connections and the expenses will be reimbursed. then we finally get the end of the line (we are about ten or fifteen minutes after the scheduled departure time for our connection at this point) and we are shuffled into this room and told to “look at the screen for our name to turn green and if we see our name turn green come back up to the agent.” i see my name go green pretty soon and come up to the agent. he just tells me to “go on” (girl sitting near translates this to “go out the way i came”). no explanation. no additional steps. so i just walk out keep walking and keep walking until i finally emerge into the gated part of the airport. (i haven’t gotten any kind of additional covid test or bag check that was supposedly happening.) i go the gate - it’s about 20 min past at this point. the flight has left. they couldn’t delay even twenty minutes for the sake of TWENTY of passengers being arbitrarily delayed for ??? reason. so i (with a group of others in the same boat) go to customer service. there are no more flights to [final destination] that day. even taking into account connections through toronto / vancouver / calgary / literally any other city there is NOTHING until the TWENTY-FIRST at the earliest (today being the 19th). not only that - air canada is refusing to issue any refunds or to pay for the cost of hotels, cabs, etc. saying it’s “an issue with customs canada and they have no responsibility” so we get nada. (the girl beside me in line is a HIGHSCHOOLER traveling by herself to see her mom, stranded in this city where she knows no one, with no money, on the other side of the continent from her family. air canada tells her to go fuck herself and take it up with customs canada.) basically my best / only option is get an evening flight to [city sister lives in about ten hour drive from where i’m trying to go] and then spend all day tomorrow on standby for various flights from there to [final destination].
anyhoo. my phone is dead for 90% of this process (aside from a few initial cryptic messages to my mom about how I might miss my flight because shuttled into strange room with no info about what was going on.) in the meantime my mom somehow manages to book me what must have been the last available seat on [flight to major connecting city]. and from there i can fly to another city which is not [original final destination] but roughly a similar distance (4ish hours) from home. i see this text AFTER the whole above situation + talking to customer service for about an hour (see above) and just about cried. (but knock on wood this connection works)
so…. tentative good ending for me. but the nineteen others are (from what i can tell) absolutely fucked. one guy tried to lodge a complaint with customs canada - they told him it was all air canada’s fault and took no responsibility.
there are even more gory details to this but this post is already novel-length — like, when talking to customer service i got myself put on standby for the same flight my mom had previously booked for me (phone dead, didn’t know she booked it) and then air canada acted like i was on standby the whole time and that it has never been booked, then finally figured it out that it had indeed been booked, then the system would not print my boarding pass (just the “standby” one), the lady finally manages to override the system after playing with it for about twenty minutes. i also have not slept since 11am yesterday so i’ve been awake for over 24 hours and i’m about to start hallucinating.
anyways this has been a surreal dystopian nigthmare and i’m knocking on wood the rest of the connections go smoothly
(don’t rb pls)

But i have left Mexico as things were not going well for me otherwise there. But i am glad there is something accessible to a person there. That is something better for things. I am trying to get a place of protection/refuge from something that torments me w things around me in the surrounding environment and in my mind. I am in Canada now. Things not going great here either and there are some things that are more difficult here than Mexico like the weather which is very cold. Just conveying some information. I don't know what i will do next. Thanks David. Marla 8. Immigration Canada extending hotel stay of asylum seekers in Toronto VICTORIA GIBSON PUBLISHED SEPTEMBER 30, 2018 Email to friend Share on twitter Share on facebook Share on linkedin Share on whatsapp Asylum seekers lodged in hotels and motels across the Greater Toronto Area will be staying two to four weeks longer than expected, as federal and municipal officials scramble for a new plan. The hotels were meant to be a temporary solution, crafted under pressure to get asylum seekers out from the local college residences where they were placed for the summer. The federal government originally paid for the hotel rooms until Sept. 30. Now, their bill will extend through at least the first half of October, if not the whole month. When asked what options the government has to house asylum seekers, after the extra two-to-four weeks run out, a spokesperson for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada said they “do not have additional information to provide at this point.” STORY CONTINUES BELOW ADVERTISEMENT Canada’s refugee system is in a tightly squeezed state, with more than 34,000 people entering the country through unauthorized points since early 2017. Only 398 have since been removed, with others somewhere within the increasingly backlogged system that processes refugee claims. Toronto’s already strained shelter system has been worn down by newcomers coming through Quebec, especially after Montreal declared in April that it would no longer accept asylum seekers into its own shelters. And the City of Toronto says it has continually requested that the provincial and federal governments facilitate a co-ordinated response, to manage the increase of refugee claimants arriving in the city and redirect new arrivals to locations outside its shelter system. Some municipalities have answered the call – like Chatham-Kent in Southwestern Ontario, where 20 newcomers from five families were redirected this month after crossing the Quebec border, under a new pilot project aimed at taking the heat off of Toronto. But while Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada said it’s working with Toronto on a response to the asylum-seeker influx, it made no mention of collaboration with the province. Debbie Douglas, executive director of the Ontario Council of Agencies Serving Immigrants, and others who are helping the asylum seekers, have been working without information regarding what happens after Sept. 30. The government’s response plans so far, from the residences to the hotels, have been "band-aid solutions,” says Lucy Chaimiti, executive director of the Toronto-based refugee home Adam House. Just five days before the federal government was set to cease payments to the hotels, Ms. Chaimiti, her colleagues at Toronto’s FCJ Refugee Centre, immigrant-services organization COSTI, members of Ms. Douglas’s Ontario-wide council, and numerous others living in the hotels or working in the field of refugee resettlement, were still in the dark about where asylum seekers would go next. Ms. Chaimiti says it’s likely been "a very destabilizing process” for asylum seekers, refugee claimants and their families, who are waiting for answers on where they’ll live next. In the last week of September, Francisco Rico-Martinez, co-director of the FCJ Refugee Centre, was at the Toronto Plaza Hotel, where some of the newcomers have been housed, and said the scene was "depressive.” Many asylum seekers and refugee claimants were unaware that their days at the hotel may be nearing an end. They waited in limbo, hanging about the hotel lobby or smoking outside the building, as children clamoured. They were anxious about a lack of information, Mr. Rico-Martinez said – even those with lawyers to handle their claims. In Toronto especially, a lack of available affordable housing is a "major issue,” COSTI executive director Mario Calla told The Globe and Mail in June. The province currently estimates that around 40 per cent of shelter occupants in Toronto are refugees, and Mayor John Tory has said they project that share to hit 54 per cent by November. STORY CONTINUES BELOW ADVERTISEMENT The Ontario government withdrew its support for the resettlement of asylum seekers in July, with Premier Doug Ford saying the issue was created by the federal government and was theirs to bear. The provincial Ministry of Community and Social Services echoed Mr. Ford’s message this week, saying the federal government has "sole jurisdiction” over border management and refugee and asylum programs. The ministry says it asked the federal government in July to compensate Ontario and municipalities for the full costs associated with people who are crossing the border at irregular points, "estimated at about $200-million and counting.” It has also asked that refugee hearings are conducted within "the statutory 60 days instead of the current two years,” to integrate them into the province more quickly, spokesperson Matt Gloyd wrote in an e-mail. All refugee claimants on Canadian soil are entitled to an oral hearing, per the Supreme Court’s landmark 1985 Singh decision. The wait time for a refugee-claim hearing in Canada has increased more than a third over the past two years, to 20 months, under pressure from the more than 30,000 asylum seekers arriving via unauthorized border crossings. THE ULTIMATE 48 HOUR TORONTO ITINERARY
Tumblr media
After so many years of travelling, I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to put together a 48 hour Toronto itinerary. It’s where I was born and it’s where I live, work and play so you think it would be easy to put together a list where to go in Toronto, right? Well, it is and it isn’t. Toronto is a world-class city but for me when I return from a trip, I just want to relax and slowly try to get back into the groove of the daily grind. But as a travel blogger who creates short trips, mini-breaks, and weekend getaway itineraries, I’m sort of obligated to create an itinerary for Toronto.
I GOT HOMETOWN ADVANTAGE.
HERE’S MY 48 HOUR TORONTO ITINERARY
All that said, I live in a very big city so I decided to stick with the downtown Toronto attractions instead of things to do near Toronto. Some are Toronto tourist spots while others are hidden gems that only a local like me would know about.
In addition, our national airline Air Canada is allowing you to hook up a stopover for up to 7 days in Toronto on your way to Europe or Asia. Sweet! You can bookmark this itinerary for when you get here. Hell, I’ll even welcome you at the airport with open arms.
Tumblr media
WHERE TO STAY IN TORONTO
Fairmont Royal York Hotel
Fairmont’s historic ballroom is legendary and the hotel itself is a city icon.  Its spacious rooms feature floral accents and include designer bath toiletries and robes. It has a skylit indoor pool, 5 on-site dining options, its across the street from Union Station with shuttle bus to both airports.
Thompson Toronto
The Hotel has a rooftop pool and bar with views of the city and CN Towers – I could pretty much stop there. But, it has designer linens and bath amenities. Fully stocked minibars, 24-hour concierge, on-site valet and a 10-minute walk from the bars and restaurants of King West.
Hyatt Regency Toronto
Located in the entertainment district in the centre of Toronto – trust me there is no better place to be. It’s a modern hotel with flat-screen TVs and Apple docking stations,  on-site sauna, outdoor pool and it’s King Street Social Kitchen and Lounge serves regional cuisine
DAY 1
BALDWIN STEPS
The first stop is Casa Loma but in order to get up the hill, we need to use the Baldwin Steps, which are a public outdoor staircase that dates back to the 19th century. They are named after a former landowner of the area, the Baldwin family, which included Robert Baldwin, a former premier of Ontario.
CASA LOMA
This 98-room castle was commissioned by Sir Henry Mill Pellatt, a Canadian soldier, and investor who founded the Toronto Electric Light Company in 1883. Sir Henry Mill Pellatt ordered Toronto native and architect E. J. Lennox to design Casa Loma. The 3.5 million dollar castle began construction in 1911 and was finally completed by 1914. Today Casa Loma is used as a filming location, a museum, as a venue for weddings. It is also one of Toronto’s most popular landmarks.
ROYAL ONTARIO MUSEUM (R.O.M.)
The Royal Ontario Museum is one of the largest museums in North America and the largest museum in Canada. The ROM is highly regarded as a “preeminent field research institute and an international leader in new and original findings in biodiversity, paleontology, earth sciences, the visual arts, material culture, and archaeology”.
PHILOSOPHERS WALK (*HIDDEN GEM)
The Philosophers Walk is a scenic footpath located in the St George campus of the University of Toronto.  It runs north-south along what was once a natural water called Taddle Creek, which was buried during the industrial age and now flows underwater.
UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO (CAMPUS)
The University of Toronto was originally founded in 1827 as King’s College and as the first institution of higher learning in Upper Canada. The university is comprised of twelve colleges. The University of Toronto also has two satellite campuses located in Scarborough and Mississauga.
BALDWIN STREET, RESTAURANTS (*HIDDEN GEM)
Yes, you might have guessed it’s the same Baldwin family who owned the land that the steps used to get to Casa Loma are built on. This small Toronto enclave is located in Toronto’s Grange Park neighbourhood. Baldwin Village is famous for its small shops and restaurants like, Shawarma and Falafel Place, Chardise, Sid’s Deli, and many other favourited restaurants of Toronto.
KENSINGTON MARKET
Kensington Market is Toronto’s self-proclaimed “most vibrant and diverse neighbourhood”.  This bustling Toronto neighbourhood serves as a fine indicator of Toronto’s multicultural diversity. No establishment in Kensington Market is the same. Vendors, shops, and restaurants of all sorts of ethnicities make up the melting pot that is Toronto’s “most vibrant and diverse neighbourhood”.
ART GALLERY OF ONTARIO (AGO)
The Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) is home to over 90,000 different artworks and is lauded as one of North America’s most distinguished art museums.  This massive museum carried works of art that range from the Renaissance to contemporary pieces of art. Aside from being an astonishing physical museum, AGO also has launched its social media website called Collection X, which grants users access to a digital art forum that is opened to artists and art lovers.
Tumblr media
GRANGE PARK
Right beside the AGO is OCAD U (The Ontario College of Art and Design University) and right behind that is Grange Park which happens to my local park.
Many-a-blog-post was conceived in this park!
There are two large sculptures by world-famous sculpture, Henry Moore and 14 nature related, inscribed granite paving stones from famous Canadian authors.
QUEEN STREET WEST
Named “the second coolest neighborhood in the world” by Vogue magazine, Queen Street West is downtown Toronto’s most celebrated (fashion) district. Queen Street West is a hip, urban strip that extends for two kilometres (1.25 miles) between Bathurst and Gladstone and is comprised of some of the city’s most trendy boutiques, art galleries, bars, and restaurants.
GRAFFITI ALLEY (*HIDDEN GEM)
Just south of Queen Street West is one of Toronto’s most surprisingly artistic accomplishments: Graffiti Alley. Graffiti Alley stretches for approximately one kilometre (.6 miles) and is teeming with urban art that is (legally) painted each summer by an artistic troupe called Style in Progress. If you’re looking to explore Toronto in hopes of finding a hidden gem that reflects the urban, artistic capabilities of the city, then Graffiti Alley is that and more. Read more about Graffiti Alley from my post: Toronto’s Graffiti And Street Art
KING STREET WEST | KING WEST VILLAGE
King West Village is one of Toronto’s fastest growing communities. With waves of young professionals moving into the neighbourhood, Kings West Village has experienced a boost in its economy and social scene. Aside from the rapidly changing demographic of the neighbourhood, King West Village is well-known for its landmarks, 19th-century buildings, and iconic brownstones.
ROGERS CENTRE (A.K.A. THE SKYDOME)
Opened in June 1989 and originally named the SkyDome, Rogers Centre is a multi-purpose indoor stadium that holds some of Toronto’s wonderfully exciting venues. Notably, the Rogers Centre is home to the Toronto Blue Jays (MLB) and has served as the venue for an array of different events: sporting events, concerts, auto shows, circuses, Disney on Ice, and much more.
Architecturally, the stadium is well-known for being the first stadium to have a fully retractable motorized roof, having an annexed 348-room hotel attached, and is also the last dual sporting major-league stadiums in North American (MLB and NFL).
TORONTO RAILWAY MUSEUM
The Toronto Railway Museum, a mainstay attraction of downtown Toronto located in Roundhouse Park,  is “dedicated to preserving the physical legacy, history, and experience of rail transportation in Toronto and Ontario.” The museum has lots to offer, such as a railway simulator, in-depth historical displays, and interactive displays. Be sure to check out the gift shop and go on a Miniature Train ride before you leave!

Often viewed as the pride and joy of Toronto, The CN Tower is a spectacular architectural and engineering feat that captures the livelihood of the city. This national icon and landmark are well-known for its (cost-efficient) state-of-the-art LED lighting system, as well as recently being on the cover of Drake’s critically-acclaimed album “Views”.  Aside from its stature as a culture and urban icon, the CN Tower is home to the revolving 360 The Restaurant.  This world-class restaurant is managed by Executive Chef John Morris and General Manager of Restaurants and Events Cameron Dryburgh, who helms the culinary team at the award-winning restaurant.
DAY 2

Despite its name, Toronto’s Distillery District is known for being “Canada’s premier arts, culture and entertainment destination”.  The district gets its name from the 47 buildings that were formally known as the Gooderham & Worts Distillery. Some Helpful Toronto Airport Taxi Tips concern To Find Out The Costs In Hiring Them
Take a bus: A bus leaving every thirty minutes links manchester airport (the terminal is located just away from the Arrivals Hall in front of the national/EU flights exit) towards the city (the terminal is near the Railway Station of Porta Nuova upon the corner between Via Sacchi and T.so Vittorio Emanuele II). The service runs at a first several hours in the morning until midnight. Public transit also stops at the Railway Station of Porta Susa. You support save your own number of lbs by reserving an individual cab prior to Airport Transfers in Melbourne on the field of wide website. The cab will park in the terminal carpark and a bit of will be there fulfill you as you exit the customs hall. Finding Find Airport Transfers in Melbourne at Heathrow airport is at itself a cumbersome service. It is far better to make a prior booking instead of standing in the airport and waiting for only a taxi. It saves period and efforts and assists you reach your destination just in time. But perhaps one of the highest things you may do in the city is to understand more about some of their many galleries. With such examples as the Patek Philippe Museum on offer, you can see why arthritis often add museums to their list of things to try and do soon after their Geneva Local Airport Taxi Services has dropped them off. These are some of exercise. To get ther Click here will need a postcode that is not simple find. Is actually possible to located near Redhill in Essex, RH6 0NP which is only 25 miles from London region. Every animal Airport Taxi Melbourne needs to travel as well as in five star hotel. We are no different. Utilise free hotel shuttles from manchester international. Wherever you are in the world, Airport taxi's are notorious for being more expensive than if you were seriously in another part among the city. You may want to get an unscrupulous taxi driver that goes on a circuitous tactic to inflate the fair. Many hotels, and airports in Europe offer shuttle services which can be a much cheaper, or even free option, to obtain from manchester airport to your hotel. I always be say until this experience doesn't come really cheap. The cabbie I hired had agreed in order to me to where I was going - but he only drove me through some alleys and backstreets - within a bid to justify the exorbitant price belonging to the fare. Following some weeks there, I discovered that the cabbie had taken those routes to make right onto your pathway look as if it was actually far. Is going to be thinking of following your budget; this might be disastrous it might really reduce your stay or make you end up in an inferior hotel.

Europe 2019
August 29 - This was the first leg of our trip – and interestingly, our unintended baby moon. Our flight was around 10 so we rushed home after work to quickly eat, shower, turn everything off and rush to the airport. Pearson was busy as usual as it was the Thursday before the last long weekend of the Summer. Everyone was trying to get their last bit of Toronto’s short-lived season. Celine and I were determined to sleep the whole 7 hours there given the red-eye, but that didn’t happen perfectly. We slept a lot of it but planes just don’t let you get that full sleep like on a real bed. I ended up watching they HBO series called Chernobyl. Currently waiting for the return flight to finish the season!
August 30 - The plane was scheduled to land at 12:15, and then they told us we were going to be one hour early, and then we were stuck on the tarmac for that hour, so we ended up arriving at 12:15. Is that considered late or on time? After disembarking, we hopped on a train to Como Nord Lago, the train station of Lake Como. We ran into some other friends along the way who were also heading to Stacey and Justin’s wedding. By the time we arrived in town, we were exhausted. After quickly grabbing some carbonara and seafood linguine at a nearby restaurant, we took a much needed nap before the pizza party at Villa Geno. Luckily for us, Villa Geno, a beautiful lakefront property, was only 10 minutes away on foot. We arrived and saw the rest of the wedding guests at what was one of the most beautiful views I’ve ever seen! The lake behind the venue was breathtaking. And of course the pizza and food (including sushi that Celine couldn’t touch) was amazing. Justin and Stacey looked happy and ready for the big day. The evening ended around 10:30 and before Celine and I turned in for the night after we got some gelato (obviously, the first of many to come on this trip).
August 31 - We woke up around 8 to soak in some sights before the wedding festivities. The old town was a short walk away so after breakfast, Celine and I took a morning stroll into the cobblestone town of Como. There was the Duomo di Como, a piazza, the Porta Torre and the city walls. Everything was beautiful and very Italian. An hour or so was more than enough so we decided to take the funicular up to Brunate. We ran into Angela at the top, sipped some coffee and then headed down to get ready for the wedding! We walked to the shuttle pickup and zipped to the Villa Pizzo for what can only be described as a celebrity wedding (same venue as John Legend and Chrissy Teigen). The ceremony and reception overlooked the water and everything was amazing. The decor, chairs, live music, hors d’oeuvres, fresh mozzarella cheese, ham, prosciutto, everything! Man, what a stunning wedding – probably the most expensive wedding we’ll ever attend! Stacey and Justin were so happy to finally tie the knot after a decade of dating. We had a great time celebrating with our friends in such a luxurious setting.
September 1 - Celine and I tried catching the 9:50 train into Milan but apparently the official website for the train was wrong (?). We ended up sitting there until 10:15. Not a huge issue I guess. The train was fast and it got us to Milan Centrale in an hour. Our hotel, the Starhotels Echo, was amazingly 2 minutes away from the main train station on foot and also let us check in early, which was great. After a quick refresh, we headed out to see Milan! Our first stop was Duomo di Milano and the piazza. It was hot and a ton of sketchy men tried to give us “free” bird seed and friendship bracelets. Common scam technique so we rushed by. The sun was scorching and the humidity kept us pretty groggy. We grabbed a quick bite at a stand-up pizza place called Spontini, ducked in and out of museums and shops to avoid the heat but even after a gelato, it proved futile to the humidity. We sat on a bench in front of the Castello Sforzesco for a bit, bought some water, and used the last bit of energy to find a field of grass to sit on in the Parco Sempione. That was relaxing. Then we got up, walked past the Arco della Pace and rushed past a tiny but unbelievably clean Chinatown. We had dinner – the Milano risotto special and an amazing stuffed fowl - at La Cantina di Manuela. Food was good but service could have been better.
September 2 - We caught the 7:50 train to the airport to catch our 10:50 flight to Vienna (a.k.a. the city of Wien). Both of us were pretty tired so slept through the flight. After getting off the plane, we bought a 48-hour transit pass and trained into the city. One of the first things we noticed was the drastic change in the weather – from hot, humid and sticky in Milan to a cool-warm breeze that you’d put on a light jacket to wander around in. Also, the leap from German to English seemed to be much easier than from Italian, and the service and help we received as tourists seemed a lot more genuine. Our hotel, the Fleming’s Selection, is pretty well-located near the Rathaus subway station, so finding it didn’t take long and proved to be quite convenient in the days to come. The weather was definitely chillier than Milan. It hovered around mid-teens throughout the day, which I enjoyed. We saw a bunch of electric scooters around the city so we found a few Bird scooters and tried them out. They were amazing! They are easy to use, well balanced and can go up to ~30km/h. We took them straight into the old town of Vienna using the dedicated bike lanes (separate from pedestrian and vehicle lanes...WHAT??!) where we had a very late lunch at Zum Schwarzen Kameel on the patio. Then we came back to the hotel to nap quickly and then went back out with warmer clothes (Vince only; note Celine was well prepared). It was a lot of wandering around Stephansplatz and the neighboring alleyways (which were beautiful). We both thought Vienna was clean and classy and well laid-out. The fact that we also could take the subway wherever with our pass was also very freeing. We also literally stumbled upon a free organ and soprano concert at Peterskirchen, a beautiful domed church close to the main street and square, so we sat in the pews and listened for about 30 minutes to some pretty heavenly stuff. Then we got dinner nearby at a vegetarian restaurant called Lebenbauer (where the chef was supposedly very well-rated) and then back to the hotel!
September 3 - It’s been a sleepy trip because we haven’t been sleeping much. So we took advantage of our less-planned day, today, to add a few more Zz’s to our repertoire. Which means...we woke up at 10am! We both felt more well-rested. Starting the day off, we had brunch at Palmenhaus, an ex-tropical greenhouse that’s been turned into a fancy restaurant right next to the Albertina Museum of Fine Arts (later, we found out that this is one of the most Instagram-able places in the world). The food was very affordable and the place quaint in the best kind of way – Vince had a guacamole and cold cut combo, while Celine had hard boiled eggs and toast - and the interior was decorated with plenty of plants and flowers. Highly recommended! We took the train to visit the Schönbrunn Castle, which was very cool. The courtyard and gardens were gigantic. Because we were too cheap to pay the entrance, we wandered to the “free” gardens, which ended up being fantastic, especially the rose garden and trellises. The maze-like design was meticulous and looked glam, like a palace should. Celine and I got bored so we set off to see Naschtmarkt, which was terribly bland, rode in the Bird scooters again, and got sausage-on-a-platter (with generous helpings of horseradish, ketchup and mustard) from the infamous stall, Bitzinger. We popped our heads into the Albertina museum and then continued to bum around Hofburg, Michaelerplatz, and a few of the other fancy buildings. Eventually we got tired so we ordered a smoothie and a gelato (hehe) before heading to dinner on the other side of the Danube at O Boufés. Since there was still light out, we opted again to eat out on the patio. The restaurant was opened by a 2 Michelin-star chef (Konstantine Filippou, the Michelin-rated restaurant was right beside ours) so the food quality was quite high. We had some amazing shrimp to start, beef cheek and a soft fish, before finishing off with a sesame-based “dumpling” dessert (apparently, a specialty in this region). Service was great too. It was a wonderful meal to top off our stay in Vienna.
September 4 - In the morning, we rolled our luggage to Hauptbahnhof to catch the train to Bratislava. When we got there, we realized the regional luxury buses would be much more convenient so we took the RegioJet at 10:50 towards Bratislava. The cost was 5 euros per person vs. 15, so it was not only cheaper but also faster. The bus literally dropped us off in front of the city centre at the steps of our hotel, the Radisson Park Inn! The location was perfect as we overlooked the Danube and was one block from the start of the old town. The hotel was being dumb and didn’t check us in so we just changed and head out to town. First, we got some delicious food at Fach, a hipster organic food place. The peanut bowl and sandwich were tasty and healthy. Then we walked around the Bratislava Castle and joined the free walking tour with our very enthusiastic guide. The tour took us around the city to see all the sights, which were just a handful, and she provided some great tips and stories about Slovakian democracy and interesting traditions (guys throw water onto girls at their home’s doorway and lightly spank them with olive branches as a fertility and flirting technique during Easter). The city is very small but had lots of history. It was easy to see all of Bratislava (tourist sites of course). After the tour, we went to the hotel to check in, change and then headed out to eat at Houdini Restaurant. Service was impeccable and food was perfecto – Vince had the chef’s 5-course menu (which featured beef tenderloin, duck breast – a lot of pregnancy no-nos haha) while Celine opted for a la carte, just to keep it easy. A wonderful choice and meal to top off our brief stop in Bratislava. We strolled around the city to get some more ice cream (lemon!) and passed by a bar playing the most wonderful lounge music live before heading to back to the hotel for the night.
September 5 - We started off with some breakfast at Mon Dieu, a local Slovakian chain that served organic and healthy foods. Then we hopped in a Bolt (their taxi service) to get back to the Bratislava train station and waited for our 12pm train. It arrived and we sat in our reserved seats. For some reason, the cabin was hot and stuffy, so pretty uncomfortable. I fell sleep because it was so hot and eventually wandered to the next car. The next car had AC! Wtf! So we moved there for the remainder (~1hr) of the ride. The train pulled into Budapest (welcome to Hungary, Celine’s 40th country!) around 2:30 and we took the subway to the hotel, the Hotel Central Basilica, which ended up being extremely central and near to the best restaurants on the Buda side of town. It was also the first hotel that we’ve stayed in that had automatic blackout blinds for the windows facing the courtyard – a real treat. The first look of the subway was yucky (read: sub-par) but the rest of Budapest proved to be beautiful. After dropping off our bags, we headed to Szimpla Kert, the city’s most popular ruin-bar. It was really hipster! The building was run down but decorated with plants, bath tubs, old art and a bunch of other random stuff and every room was different, which made it even more bizarre. We took photos and then went to Karavan, the food truck place next door, and grabbed a Langos burger. It was tasty, especially the bread. There were a lot of pigeons. Roaming around, we checked out the Jewish Quarter and famous Synagogue, and eventually wound up back around our hotel, where we went to the top of St. Stephen’s Basilica to catch golden hour overlooking the entire city of Budapest. It was really something – a panoramic view of the entire city (even across the Danube) and a sight we would highly recommend! Then we had dinner at one-Michelin-starred Borkonya (our first since our very first brunch in Manhattan at two-star Jean Georges; very reasonable prices – I think it was ~C$120 for both of us that night), one alcoholic and one non-alcoholic cocktail at Mazel Tov (a beautiful vine-laden bar with a soaring rooftop in the ruin-bar area), and then went back to Szimpla Kert to see it at night (of course, it was already bustling at 11PM). Then bed time.
September 6 - We started the day with an 11am walking tour of Budapest. We saw the parliament, a bunch of Soviet monuments (including Virulji / the False Memorial, of Hungary trying to cover up its involvement with siding with the Nazis), the Shoes on the Danube (a very somber reminder of the Jews that were executed on the banks of the Danube during WWII, marked by 60 pairs of copper shoes that were unveiled on the 60th anniversary of the end), Matthias Church, the Chain Bridge, Fisherman’s Bastion, Liberty Square (with the Ronald Reagan statue because his policies helped enact democratic change in the country) and the Buda Castle. The Danube is quite something (a lot wider than some of the other big-city rivers like the Thames) and apparently the view from the view is a UNESCO World Heritage site in itself. It was quite hot and sunny so fairly uncomfortable to keep walking around in the sun. We learned that the Buda side is the flat one where most of the tourist attractions are vs. the Pest side, which is hilly and houses ~80% of the city’s population (naming the city ‘Budapest’ was a big topic as it turned out because Buda came first). Lunch was pretty average – it was around 2PM by the time we ended the tour and we just picked a random restaurant that had the capacity to seat us immediately. Then we went back to our hotel area to grab a flower-shaped gelato ice cream from Gelarto Rosa before taking a long nap heh. At night, we had a fantastic dinner at Hilda Restaurant (which was designed by the same architect that did St. Stephen’s) and then had an evening stroll along the Danube and Chain Bridge. Budapest is really beautiful at night.
September 7 - We slept in until 11 hehe. It was raining unfortunately so the day was slow and gloomy. Opting out of the thermal baths (see: pregnant) and seeing the Heroes Square, we spent most of the day at the national museum to dodge the rain. Afterwards we just walked around Vaci Street, the shopping district, and then came back to the hotel to rest a bit. For dinner, we had the 5-course at Mak Bistro, where they were kind enough to adapt the tasting menu for Celine. Walking back, the open area beside St. Stephen’s Basilica was doing an outdoor film marathon where we watched the first few minutes of a weird folklore tale (The Son of the White Mare, as we later Googled) and was showing a Queen concert. Hundreds of people were outside in the rain watching!
September 8 - Our last day! Mixed feelings. To treat ourselves before our long flight home, we stopped by at Chez Dodo, a gourmet macaron place where we had a few delicious bites. We grabbed a Bolt back to the airport and finally, flew home.
---------------------
All in all, a wonderful trip! We’re so glad we were able to see Eastern Europe together, our friends get married abroad, and sneak in for our baby moon (with few questions from the Ko family). Until our next #vinceline trip!

As I sat around the table with my new family members, women cutting up veggies for that wedding since they were talking and laughing feeling more and more frustrated and decided maybe they were laughing at me also.
