A fascinating insight into a Chinese telecoms giant and its detractors
Huawei is not exactly a household name. If you’ve heard of it, you either follow the smartphone market closely – it is the main China-based manufacturer of high-end phones – or else consume a lot of news, because the company is at the centre of an ongoing US-China trade war.
But this enormous business is one of the world’s biggest producers of behind-the-scenes equipment that enables fibre broadband, 4G and 5G phone networks. Its hardware is inside communications systems across the world.
That has prompted alarm from US lawmakers of both parties, who accuse Huawei of acting as an agent for China’s government and using its technology for espionage. The company insists it merely complies with the local laws wherever it operates, just like its US rivals. Nevertheless, its equipment has been ripped out of infrastructure in the UK at the behest of the government, its execs and staffers have been arrested across the world, and it has been pilloried for its involvement in China’s oppression of Uyghur Muslims in Xinjiang.
Into this murky world of allegation and counter-allegation comes the veteran telecoms reporter Eva Dou. Her book chronicles the history of Huawei since its inception, as well as the lives of founder Ren Zhengfei and his family, starting with the dramatic 2019 arrest of his daughter Meng Wanzhou, Huawei’s chief financial officer, at the behest of US authorities.
Dou’s command of her subject is indisputable and her book is meticulous and determinedly even-handed. House of Huawei reveals much, but never speculates or grandstands – leaving that to the politicians of all stripes for whom hyperbole about Huawei comes more easily.
At its core, this book is the history of a large, successful business. That doesn’t mean it’s boring, though: there’s the story of efforts to haul 5G equipment above Everest base camp in order to broadcast the Beijing Olympics torch relay. We hear about the early efforts of Ren and his team, working around the clock in stiflingly hot offices, to make analogue telephone network switches capable of routing up to 10,000 calls; and gain insights into the near-impossible political dance a company must perform in order to operate worldwide without falling foul of the changing desires of China’s ruling Communist party.
Dou makes us better equipped to consider questions including: is this a regular company, or an extension of the Chinese state? How safe should other countries feel about using Huawei equipment? Is China’s exploitation of its technology sector really that different to the way the US authorities exploited Google, Facebook and others, as revealed by Edward Snowden?
Early in Huawei’s history, Ren appeared to give the game away in remarks to the then general secretary of the Communist party. “A country without its own program-controlled switches is like one without an army,” he argued, making the case for why the authorities should support his company’s growth. “Its software must be held in the hands of the Chinese government.”
But for each damning event, there is another that introduces doubt. The book reveals an arrangement from when Huawei operated in the UK that gave GCHQ unprecedented access to its source code and operations centre. US intelligence agencies seemed as able to exploit Huawei equipment for surveillance purposes as China’s. While Huawei’s equipment was certainly used to monitor Uyghur Muslims in Xinjiang, it was hardware from the US company Cisco that made China’s so-called Great Firewall possible.
Anyone hoping for definitive answers will not find them here, but the journey is far from wasted. The intricate reporting of Huawei, in all its ambiguity and complexity, sheds much light on the murky nature of modern geopolitics. The people who shout loudest about Huawei don’t know more than anyone else about it. Eva Dou does.

so, to recap: for women—the ones who matter to me—that’s 25g for adult women who are 50 and under. women 50 and over, that’s 21g.
and i included the extra paragraph about Metamucil etc bc that is important to note. a lot of people do think they’re getting quality daily fiber in these powders.
here’s a helpful article abt the differences between soluble and insoluble fiber. both are important in their own ways!

so!
i recommend a quick google to see the fiber content per serving of a variety of foods that i don’t have time condense here. but, like, beans are a really inexpensive way to do this (add some rice to it and you have a complete muscle-lovin’ protein btw! all the essential amino acids are covered when you combine rice and beans 🫶). beans and legumes are incredibly rich in fiber, and they’re budget-friendly, shelf-stable, and easy to make and easy to incorporate into infinite delicious possible dishes.
but your fiber can be gotten from so many different sources! (my data here is approximate from individual checking. pls allow 1-2g of fiber for margin of error in case i mistype!)
for fruits: 1 cup of blackberries OR raspberries has 8g of fiber!!!!! 1 medium apple has around 4-5g of fiber. an average banana or a serving of strawberries have 3g of fiber. an average avocado has 10g of fiber. and so forth
for grains: steel-cut oats have 5g of fiber per 1/4 cup uncooked (oats are generally rich in fiber anyway, but steel cut in particular). a slice of whole grain bread should have around 3g fiber. brown rice contains 3.5g fiber for every cooked cup. one cup of cooked quinoa (which is also a complete protein!) contains 5g of fiber. bran is almost 15g per one cup serving.
if you’ve got access to chia seeds, a 1oz serving provides 10g fiber. here’s a yummy super easy recipe for peanut butter chia pudding!!!
nuts and seeds provide a lot of fiber too. 1oz of walnuts contains nearly 2g fiber! 1oz of almonds contains 3.5g fiber. peanuts contain 2.5g fiber for 1oz. sunflower seeds are 12g per 1 cup serving (though that’s a lot of them to eat—1/4 a cup would be closer to 3g)
and my fave prunes are 12g per one cup serving. again, that’s a lot of them to eat. 1/4 of that would be 3g.
beans/legumes are king for fiber. 1 cup of cooked black beans contains 15g of fiber. 1 cup of navy beans contains around 19g of fiber. 1 cup of kidney beans contains 11g of fiber.
split peas are i think around 8g per cup when cooked? cooked broccoli is around 5g. corn is around 4g.
i could go on but i’m literally hooked up to an IV for medication rn so i’m one-handed lol i apologize for how cramped this is
but here’s a great list from the Mayo Clinic of high fiber foods and another list of 40 foods from a women’s health mag and also another from healthline, which also has a handy chart for fiber requirements for more specific age groups based on sex
and yes, there are also high-fiber cereals, but beware of the much-touted and rightly-feared ingredient of psyllium husk. it’s more or less used as a laxative and can be outright dangerous for your digestive system and is very painful if not consumed in militant moderation. ask me how i know lol. please please be careful of psyllium husk. like, for real. just stay away from it altogether imo.
sorry this is a lot of discombobulated info, but again i’m one handed at the moment. but hopefully that helps a bit! fiber is linked to longevity and good colon health and that’s what i want for women forever
EDIT: go slow with this! if you’re not used to the recommended daily intake, you will need to gradually work up to this so as not to upset your gastrointestinal system. you may otherwise find yourself in discomfort. GO SLOW. add fiber-rich foods in small portions over time to allow your body to adjust. it is well worth the patience—but don’t overload your system by eating a ton of prunes and thinking you’re doing yourself any good that way. introduce gently and in moderation until you feel comfortable with how it makes your digestion feel!

The Universe Is Never Black & White, So Why Does Everyone Polarize their Beliefs?
One of the greatest questions that bugs me deeply--it keeps me up at night-- regards polarization. By this, I'm not referring only to political polarization, or even ideological polarization in general. I'm talking about everything being lumped into simple 'yes' or 'no', 'true' or 'false'.
I'm talking about anything and everything in the universe that's been confined to 2 binary 'poles'.
I will write a lot more about this topic later, so consider this an incomplete argument which seeks to set the mood for later posts about polarization.
This post will serve as a 'thought experiment' about expectations for 'simple tasks' to yield binary, expected results.

Down to the smallest quantum mechanics of our universe, nothing happens in surety. We observe this effect follow us up to our more visible, tangible world through statistics.
"Expect the Unexpected" is a favorite cliche of mine that captures that simple fact.
It's really not hard to understand why nothing is so simple as a single cause, with a single effect. Just sitting here, typing away on the keyboard, I can name at least 10 things happening, in which each line contains many more steps in this process that I'm skipping:
My brain is somehow interpreting my consciousness, translating to hundreds, thousands-- who knows how many-- electrical signals that are basically just binary + cool hormones that act like quantum computers want to
After receiving neural commands, my muscles are mimicking movements which I've practiced over many years. However, I am using a different keyboard this morning so there is some very quick adjustments being made (by the brain I guess) from my most recent muscle memory to account for the smaller keys. I'm doing well-- not too many typos so far
When I click a click on the keyboard, a very small computer (like really small) inside the keyboard translates those mechanical actions--literally just physical forces acting down upon a sensor designed to sense that stuff-- and translating that into a standardized binary instruction.
Literal radio waves are sent, bouncing up and down through whatever obstacle course I set up for them, to reach a USB 'dongle' (love that term, won't stop using it) attached into my computer port.
Said USB 'dongle'-- I guess-- has an EVEN SMALLER silicon chip to interpret said 2.4 GHz signals and translate it for the computer

I'm skipping the many, many steps the computer takes at this point and moving forward to my home Wi-Fi.
I live in a valley, in a pretty rural area. The only internet available to me was T-Mobile's Home Internet plan, which is just a 'HotSpot' Tower. It works insanely well considering the marathon these poor protons are doing for me.
Now, for my purposes I actually broke the warranty on the router, and wired up a better antenna from outside, which is capable to sending and receiving 4G & 5G signals of the correct 'bands' which the Cell Tower nearest to me is a capable of handling.
('Bands' are just provider terms for different frequencies of radio waves.)

After my computer does whatever it wants with it, I do need to somehow communicate my desires to the internet servers which the rest of the world are connected to. This involves sending-- again-- binary signals through a wire this time, my Ethernet cable.
This lands at the T-Mobile Hotspot Router, which interprets those signals into ones which, I presume, are desired by the Cell Signal Tower nearest to me. As in they are radio wavelengths of a certain frequency, which somehow contain binary instructions
After the Router has translated and sent the signals through the 'Quad Coax Cable' I have run to the outside, the antenna broadcasts radio waves. These radio waves then fight through hell or high water for me to arrive about 1 mile away at T-Mobile's cell tower
I honestly have even less clue what happen after that. I would assume that's what all the infrastructure like phone lines are for, so those signals are sent down there, then passed around until it hits the right 'server' that Tumblr.com has used.
I'm sure I missed something, but at this point I believe my typed character on the keyboard has been successfully sent to the internet. Well, technically the computer stuff would all happen at the per-key level, while the WiFi stuff is probably done in 'bulk requests' every sentence or two.

If you didn't read all that (more than a quick skim)-- good for you. It was exhausting to write, and exhausting I'm sure to read. I'm sure it was even more exhausting for all the poor little Protons I harnessed to do my bidding this morning.
To conclude, I just want to say that someone who types on their keyboard might expect things to work just as planned, but there's multitudes of things that could 'go wrong' and result in a delay to the expected character appearing on the screen.
