I don’t usually get personal here but I also don’t really have someone to share this with, I’m not close with family and I just need to so here we are.
I lost my grandmother, nana, this week, she passed on Friday morning. Her death was very sudden and unexpected. It still feels like some horrible elaborate joke to me, I keep waiting for someone to reveal she’s still here, and it hurts like I can’t even begin to explain.
I’ve been thinking of her constantly this weekend. She was the most bubbly energetic person I’ve known in my life, right up to the end. She loved to dance and laugh, she was a powerhouse. Many times when I saw her as an adult she would strike a pose and say “don’t I look good? How old do you think I am” and then proudly declare she looked like this at her age.
When I was a kid I used to have sleepovers at her house. She had a room in her house with a tv, a huge collection of movies, and a comfy couch bed, it was decorated with so much over the top animal print, much like how she dressed, and pillows and little knick knacks of giraffes. She loved Marilyn Monroe and she was very theatrical, so naturally I remember watching a lot of her favorites with her like phantom of the opera and some like it hot. She always made brownies when we came over, and we would have English tea and she would tell me about her family and life back in England. She was so involved with what her grandkids loved and was always encouraging us. I have many memories of sitting in her house and drawing with my cousins and sister and how she was so proud of anything we did. My sister, who couldn’t have been older than 7 at the time drew a picture of George Harrison off some Beatles poster nana had nearby and nana had it hung up on the fridge for years. When I was a preteen and read the first twilight book I told nana about it and she got caught up and she LOVED it. She took me to the bookstore to pick up new moon that summer. Some of my cousins were very into Harry Potter, and nana read every book and saw every movie, she used to tell us it reminded her of home, and I remember her bawling her eyes out and sobbing in the theater when dumbledore was killed.
Another thing about nana is that she was a proudly out gay woman. In the south. In her 80s. She had a wife that she loved so much that we lost just months ago as well. I always found their relationship so inspiring, even before I really knew I was queer myself. One of the last phone calls I had with her was about her wife after she passed, and the pain she felt, and some of the troubles that came with a funeral for a gay woman. She and her wife were mentors to queer teens and extremely charitable. I never got to tell nana my truth, I never got to tell her how inspiring she was to me because I was scared of what other members of my family would say, I had grown up seeing the way some felt about her and knowing myself they was wrong, but I was still scared and I deeply regret it. Sometimes I feel like deep down she might have always known, she spoke about it openly with me and even mailed me the newspaper clipping when her and her wife were finally able to get married.
I’m not a religious person, but nana was, and I know if heaven is real she’s there with her wife proudly dancing and running around like a bumble bee and laughing. I know she’s proud of the charitable life she lived, of the legacy she’s left behind, and for looking good doing it all the way up to 81 years old. I miss her terribly, I only wish I had more time with her, it feels like a light has gone out in the world. There’s probably a million more things I could share about nana but I’ll stop for now. I love you nana.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny Review.
So it's been 14 years since the last movie which nobody seems to like, I enjoyed it but I get why people didn't like it.
I'm going to start by saying this movie was fantastic it was a great popcorn movie, do I think it will win any awards? Maybe.
There's no mention of Henry Jones the 3rd played by Shia LaBouf except for in passing.
There are a couple of good cameos in this movie, I will mention them below the Keep Reading...
I think the question everybody is asking is this movie worth seeing in theaters? I say absolutely yes.
This movie has all the Hallmarks you want in an Indiana Jones movie.
action adventure, car chase sequences, fights, the bullwhip, the fedora, Harrison Ford at his best.
Some of you might be wondering how good is the de-aging in this movie? Well it's definitely better than anything we've seen from DC in the last 10 years.
Hats off to industrial Light and magic for making Indiana Jones go from 81 years old to 45 to 35 and back to 81 years old all in one movie.
Is it noticeable? Yes but you don't mind it cuz it looks really good.
Harrison Ford said that they used all the archived footage from all the movies he's done for lucasfilm over the past 45 years to make him look younger in this movie.
Tumblr media
So you're asking who has made cameos in this movie? Well we see John Rhys-Davies and later on we see Karen Allen.
As I suspected this movie has to do with a device that allows for time travel.
They didn't spend a lot time bouncing around Through Time although that would have been really cool but the time they did go to was really neat and it worked really well for the story.
As far as how I'm going to rate this movie, I will say this it's better than Crystal Skull but not as good as Last Crusade or the other two.
They should have done this movie 10 years ago.
4 out of 5 🌟🌟🌟🌟

“It’ll be fun, Y/N,” Your friend Kimmy said with a huge smile, dragging you to the student lounge located on the west side of the campus.
"You’re just saying that because you’re part of the organizing committee,” You mumbled as you tried to hold on to your binder full of this week’s readings.
You were basically camping in the library the whole day as you tried to conquer the list of things that you had to do for the whole week. You were already knee-deep with your readings just for that research paper from one of your psych classes alone so what more from the other classes right?
It was already a rough couple of days for you and you definitely needed this as a break-whatever this is. Kimmy was basically doing you a favour.
“Okay, but you like High School Musical that’s why you had to go.” She pointed out as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.
“I enjoy it,” You stressed, “To say that I like it would be an exaggeration.”
“Bitch, please” Kimmy snorted as you two found an empty booth at the lounge. “You can practically quote the whole trilogy and you can sing the songs like ABC’s.”
You just glared at her and made yourself comfortable, “This better be worth it, Kim. I am losing sleep because of my research paper and I can’t spend my spare time doing other things.”
“Honey,” Kimmy gasped as she put both her hands on top of your shoulders “Are you even hearing yourself? You know you can take a break, right?! No, actually you have to take a break.”
You sighed and just succumbed in defeat as your friend clasped her hands in excitement. “This is going to be great, Y/N.” She said in glee. “The org’s providing dinner tonight so you don’t have to worry about that. Also, we have karaoke set up and you can win at least a £50 gift card if you scored like a 90 and above.”
“Wow, free dinner and a gift card?!"
“The org’s also serving alcohol if you really want to take an edge off,” Kimmy winked giving you a light nudge.
“Now, there’s alcohol? Why didn’t you lead with that, you bitch!” You gasped, jokingly.
Kimmy rolled her eyes, “Okay, I’ll get back to you later. I have to check with the others if the food’s ready.”
“Mkay,” You murmured as you pulled out your readings and took out your stack of sticky notes. “I mean, I think I can squeeze a bit of reading.”
You tried to do a bit of your reading but with how they set up the lighting at the lounge, it was nearly impossible. They dimmed the lights and set up a few red lights in the corners of the lounge, the red popping out and setting the tone for the whole event. Fairy lights were put out as well, giving enough light to see the decorations that they did.
It was High School Musical themed so you did expect a whole lot of red and white colours popping every now and then. Boy, you were definitely feeling the wildcat spirit.
Knowing well enough that you weren’t going to accomplish any of your research work, you made the decision to scroll on your phone. After spending a good few minutes scrolling on Instagram, you’ve decided to take a quick video to post on your Instagram story.
You posted the story with the caption saying: “high school musical karaoke night! @/kimmydelacruz thnx also u have to sing with me, i can’t possibly do it myself.”
Kimmy was in the kitchen when a pair of arms snuck its way and were wrapped around her waist, “Hi babe, you okay?”
“’m okay, love. Don’t worry,” Kimmy replied as she viewed her friend’s story, rolling her eyes in amusement. “Hey, Haz, did you manage to bring in more people?”
“Uh, not a lot. Tom and a couple of mates from my kinesiology class are here though,” Harrison settled his chin on the crook of Kimmy’s neck. “What’cha watching, babe?”
“Oh, it’s just Y/N’s story. She posted about our HSM-themed karaoke night and she wants me to sing with her, hoping that she can claim that gift card.” Kimmy replied as she continuously tapped on her phone, skipping a lot of stories from other people.
Harrison hummed, “Babe, you know we can’t participate right?”
“Yeah, I know.”
“You know, Tom really wants that gift card too, he wouldn’t stop saying how he would risk his reputation for that 50,” Harrison pointed out. “Tom’s gone mental, I’m telling ‘ya.”
Kimmy locked her phone and shoved it in the back pocket of her jeans. She turned to Harrison with a smirk playing on her face. “Haz, my love, has Tom ever met Y/N before?”
Harrison took a good look at his girlfriend, he knows that devious smile anywhere. “Babe, what are you planning?”
Tumblr media
“You are the music in me,” A couple was on stage, trying their shot on the karaoke. The karaoke was now jumbling to flash the scores, the couple were both waiting in anticipation.
“A bloody 81?” The girl yelled, appalled. She was trying to pull a serious face but a laugh was threatening to come out. “I have harnessed my vocal cords for this and all I got was a bloody 81?”
The crowd couldn’t help but laugh at her comment. Their singing wasn’t bad, “maybe it was just the machine” as they said.
“Why don’t you give it a go, mate?” Harrison nudged Tom, who was taking a sip of his beer. Harrison dropped by to check up on his mates when he found Tom, who was sitting at one of the booths along with a couple of mates from class.
“Haz, mate, are you sure you want me to go up there?” Tom asked, laughing. “Might I remind you that you were the same person who practically begged me to not embarrass you in front of people.”
“Yeah, ’m starting to regret even saying a mere word,” Harrison muttered to himself. “But I know you're not one to turn down karaoke, let alone have the opportunity to get £50 along innit,” Harrison said, placing a hand on Tom’s shoulder.
“Alright, c’ mere, mate.” Harrison stood up and walked towards the karaoke machine. He punched a couple of numbers to a song and gave Tom the mic.
“Mate, you are making a big mistake.” Tom chuckled, happily grabbing the mic. As soon as Tom saw the song that was playing on the screen, he quickly pressed the ‘pause’ button and grabbed Harrison’s arm before he left the stage “Mate, hold on, this is a duet.”
“Yeah, I know.”
“Oh, so you know, do ‘ya?” Tom mocked. “Well, come on, mate. I am not going to sing this alone, ‘cause ‘ya know, a duet means two people.” Tom laughed, doing an impression of Sharpay’s infamous line. Tom loves binging the High School Musical movies and he isn’t afraid to say that.
“Absolutely not, mate,”  Harrison stressed, making Tom raise his brow. “Look, don’t take this the wrong way, Tom, but there’s no way I’m singing tonight. Why did you think I volunteered to be part of the organizing committee?”
“Uh, because you couldn’t say no to Kim?” Tom countered.
“That and I’m not allowed to participate. Mate, if you want to win the gift card, you would have to find someone else to sing up here with you,” Haz explained.
Tom let out a sigh, “I guess you’re right.”
“I’m always right,” Harrison pointed out jokingly.
“Alright, but who am I-” Before Tom even got the chance to finish his sentence, Harrison quickly left the stage. He looked over at the table where his friends were and asked,  “Connor, mate, do you want to sing up here with me?”
Connor shook his head insanely fast. “Absolutely not, Tom. Have you forgotten that I am tone-deaf? I do not want to embarrass myself in front of people.”
Tom turned towards Brandon and he shook his head as well. “Mate, I only came here for the food and drinks, remember?”
“Great,” Tom muttered. He looked around the crowd, trying to figure out if he even wants to even push through this at all.
“You still doing okay, Y/N?” Harrison asked as soon as he approached you. You just saw Harrison walk off stage after he finished talking to some guy who was about to sing.
You gave him a nod as soon as you took a sip of the hard lemonade that they were serving at the bar. “Shouldn’t be drinking, but I really wanted one so...” You trailed off as you raised your cup at him. You wanted a drink but not something that would give you a headache after.
“Eh,” Harrison shrugged. “You deserve to relax from time to time. Heard from Kimmy that you’ve been stressing a lot on that research paper of yours.”
“Thanks,” you muttered. Harrison quickly excused himself, saying that Kimmy was looking for him, which you just dismissed him anyway.
You were scrolling on your phone when you heard someone clear their throat. “Sorry, but have you seen Harrison?”
You looked up and made contact with a gorgeous pair of brown eyes. He was the same guy who was on the stage not too long ago. You recognized him from the photos that Harrison posts on his Instagram.
One drunken night, you were sitting next to Kimmy as she mindlessly scrolled through her boyfriend’s photos on Instagram. You both came across the photo of Harrison and his friends, sitting at a luxe sofa, assuming that they were at an event. Harrison was sitting next to his friend who was wearing a white button-up shirt, his legs sprawled. This was the same night you admitted to your best friend, that you found Harrison’s friend cute.
Well, he looks cuter up close.
“Uh, yeah, he just left and said that he has to meet Kimmy. Think they’ll be back quick though, I practically begged Kimmy to sing with me on stage.” You explained.
He nodded understandingly. “You here for the 50 quid?” He asked, a small smile playing on his lips.
You gave him a sheepish smile, “Yeah, I’m in university and am broke. I’d do anything for that 50.”
“Oh, I hear ‘ya,” He laughed “However, I do remember Haz telling me that the organizers aren’t allowed to participate though.”
“You’re kidding,” You said in disbelief. This was news to you as you were really looking forward to singing up there and getting that prize money. Well, you were looking forward to singing with someone to get that prize money.
“I’m afraid not, darling.” He chuckled. “Trust me, I asked Harrison to sing with me as well.”
“Well, that’s a shame,” You muttered. Well, tonight could be worse. At least you had a free meal.
“Hold on, what would you say if we both get up there and sing?” He asked with a bright look on his face.
“Are you joking?” You asked, taken back with the idea that a stranger (sort of) is asking to sing with you.
“Absolutely not,” He insisted “It’s not like we have anything to lose-”
“Besides my dignity” You claimed.
“C’mon,” He laughed “If anything, we can only gain from this moment.”
“Which is?”
“That prize money,” He listed off using his fingers. “A night to remember,” He continued.
You nodded after every point until he said, “Maybe romance?” He suggested cheekily.
“Shut up,” You murmured shyly, feeling your cheeks burn. You took a minute before you grabbed your cup of hard lemonade and finished the rest of your drink. “Alright, loverboy, c’mon.”
You stood up and followed the stranger to the karaoke machine. You couldn’t believe it, you’re actually singing with someone you don’t know.
He handed you a spare mic before he pressed the ‘play’ button and not long after, you heard the intro to the song that brought you nostalgia.
“Once in a lifetime, means there’s no second chance
So I believe that you and me, should grab it while we can,” He was looking at the screen to guide himself with the lyrics and started singing,  surprising you that he had a wonderful voice.
He was becoming more and more attractive to you and you didn’t even know his name.
“Make it last forever and never give it back,” You sang into the mic, reading off the screen as well. You know this song by heart so god knows why you’re all of a sudden reading off the screen.
This was a whole new experience for you. You usually do karaoke in a private room with a couple of very close friends, and this is the complete opposite: you were singing in public with a stranger.
“Because this moment’s really all we have,” Your voices melded together smoothly, which shocked you if you were being honest. It’s as if you were both meant to sing together.
“Every day of our lives,” He was now facing you, stepping a bit closer to you.
“Wanna find you there, wanna hold on tight,” You faced him and did the same thing as well, taking a step closer to him.
“Gonna run,”
“While we’re young and keep the faith,”
“Every day,” He took another step closer. “From right now, Gonna use our voices and scream out loud.”
“Take my hand,” You sang, holding out your hand. At this point, you were convinced that the spirit of Gabriella Montez has taken over your body. Y/N Y/L/N would never be this bold.
He gladly took your hand, a smile was permanently painted on his face, “Together we will celebrate.”
“Oh, every day.”
The instrumental kicked in and you two were really feeling the music when he leaned over into your ear and said, “Never would’ve pegged you to know this song, darling.”
You laughed softly and said, “I should be the one saying that.”
You two carried on singing, having an absolute blast. Never in a million years would you have imagined for this moment to happen, it felt too good to be true.
“Every day,” You both sang the last line with your faces in close proximity. How did this happen? Maybe it was the alcohol? Maybe you two were just so into it that it felt right? No one knows.
As you two were waiting for the karaoke machine to show your score, the guy leaned in and said, “Darling, I don’t think I even got your name.”
“Y/N,” You said with a smile and offered your hand.
“Y/N” He repeated with a warm smile, shaking your hand. “What a lovely name, darling, I’m Tom.”
“It was a pleasure to sing with you, Tom.” You said, laughing softly.
Tom brought your hand up to his lips, “Oh, trust me, darling, the pleasure is all mine.” He disclosed placing a gentle kiss on the top of your hand, leaving your cheeks burning.
Maybe you and Tom were so into the moment that you didn’t even realize that Harrison and Kimmy joined you on stage. “Alright, give it up for tonight’s real-life Troy and Gabriella!” Kimmy yelled to the crowd, in which they happily obliged and gave you and Tom a thunderous cheer.
“Okay, lovebirds, in case you didn’t notice-which I know you didn’t,” Harrison pointed out “You two scored a 91, so here are your gift cards.”  He handed you both a gift card each.
“Use it well.” Kimmy teased, in which you rolled your eyes and nudged your best friend.
“Well, I guess this is our start of something new, huh?” Tom whispered in your ear, a teasing smile playing on his face.

Welcome to Pollapalooza, our weekly polling roundup.
Poll(s) of the week
Almost all states have now begun phased reopenings after shutting down nonessential businesses to slow the spread of the coronavirus. However, any dreams that life would return to its pre-pandemic normal do not appear to be coming true. Recent polling indicates that Americans are still spooked by the threat of COVID-19 and many won’t be resuming their old behaviors any time soon.
In a Morning Consult poll conducted May 12-15, only 23 percent of Americans said they were comfortable going out to eat, going on vacation or going to a shopping mall — and those were the activities that respondents were most likely to be comfortable with. Only 16 percent said they were comfortable going to the movies, 14 percent going to an amusement park and 13 percent going to the gym. And another Morning Consult poll, from May 19-21, found that sports fans have come around to holding games in empty stadiums if necessary, with 41 percent supporting a crowdless return as soon as possible and 38 percent saying leagues should wait until it’s safe for fans to attend before restarting. That’s a stark change from April 3-5, when 70 percent of fans said sports leagues should wait until it’s safe for spectators and only 16 percent favored a quicker return.
Similarly, a May 17-21 poll of New York state by The New York Times/Siena College suggested that, even if all legal restrictions were lifted, the theater industry would take months to recover. Only 39 percent of Broadway regulars said they would be very or somewhat likely to see a show if theaters reopened around Sept. 1. Among playgoers who said they were not very likely to attend a show for the rest of this year, 58 percent said it was because they didn’t trust other audience members to maintain social-distancing measures, and 55 percent also said they did not trust others to wear masks.
Speaking of Sept. 1, one of the biggest unknowns is whether schools will reopen in the fall — but even if they do, many students and teachers may not attend. USA Today/Ipsos polled both parents and teachers May 18-21 and found that 59 percent of parents were likely to pursue at-home learning options, like online classes or home schooling. And nearly one-fifth of teachers said they likely would not go back to work in the fall if schools reopen.
Additionally, in at least one state, the pandemic may have a long-term impact on how people get around. According to a MassINC poll from May 5-13, about one-third of Massachusetts residents said they expect to take the train, ride the subway, take the bus, carpool, take a taxi and use ride-share apps less often, even after the worst of the pandemic has passed. On the other hand, 38 percent said they will walk more, and 28 percent said they will drive alone in their own car more.
Instead of looking to get life back to normal, Americans seem to be taking to the new, low-contact ways of life foisted upon us by the pandemic. According to a May 11-17 Gallup poll, 44 percent of adults said they were picking up takeout food more often than they did a month ago. In late March and early April, only 26 percent said they were upping their takeout orders. Likewise, 36 percent of adults were taking more advantage of curbside pickup at stores (up from 19 percent in late March and early April), and 27 percent were having more virtual doctor’s appointments (up from 12 percent). And although it’s just one state, the MassINC poll also found that 41 percent of workers said they would prefer to work from home even after Massachusetts reopens.
Some people have changed their behavior as states have reopened, but the majority are still taking social-distancing measures. According to the latest Navigator Research poll from Global Strategy Group and GBAO (from May 21-25), 74 percent of registered voters are spending almost all their time at home, down from a high of 87 percent in early April. And 56 percent are still avoiding in-person interactions with family and friends, down from 73 percent. However, the share who are avoiding public gatherings or going out to eat or drink has remained pretty steady over time (each currently at 81 percent). Similarly, over the last few weeks, Elucd’s tracker has found a gradual erosion in the number of people who say they are isolating themselves from other people, although nearly 70 percent say they are still doing so all or most of the time.
The reason Americans aren’t yet picking up where they left off appears to be simple: People tell pollsters that they need the number of new COVID-19 cases to drop in order to feel safe again. Per Elucd, only 7 percent of respondents said schools and businesses reopening would make them stop practicing social distancing; the same percentage said guidance from elected officials would. For most people, it would take a significant drop in COVID-19 cases (32 percent said this) or widespread antibody testing (26 percent). According to yet another Morning Consult poll (this one fielded May 19-21), 73 percent of registered voters thought coronavirus testing should be required for employees to return to work, and 74 percent thought it should be required for students to go back to school. Finally, the Associated Press and NORC Center for Public Affairs Research found in a May 14-18 poll that 79 percent of Americans thought it was important that a coronavirus vaccine be available before reopening businesses and resuming activities in their area, including 46 percent who said a vaccine was essential.
Other polling bites
One of the many second-order effects of the pandemic is that state governments are facing massive budget shortfalls. The most recent Elucd data found that 63 percent of Americans supported direct federal payments to the states to avoid cuts in state services. And this week, the Kaiser Family Foundation found that vast majorities of Americans opposed cuts to K-12 public education (80 percent), police and safety (75 percent) and Medicaid (74 percent). Majorities also opposed cuts to social services (60 percent), higher education (55 percent), prisons and jails (54 percent) and environmental protection (53 percent). However, only 39 percent opposed cuts to transportation; 57 percent supported decreasing transportation spending to balance state budgets.
Morning Consult has launched a multiyear survey project into the attitudes of Generation Z (i.e., people born after 1997). So far, the coronavirus pandemic seems to be the seminal event for this generation: 78 percent of “Zoomers” (a nickname that has now taken on a double meaning with our new reliance on video conferencing during the pandemic!) said the outbreak has had a major impact on their worldview. Roughly tied for a distant second place were mass shootings (57 percent), the Sept. 11 attacks (56 percent) and President Trump’s election (55 percent).
A new Civil Beat/Hawaii News Now poll showed that Hawaiians have soured on once-popular Rep. Tulsi Gabbard since her failed presidential run. Only 28 percent of voters statewide viewed her positively, while 49 percent viewed her negatively. Gov. David Ige was also unpopular, with only 20 percent having a positive opinion of him and 54 percent having a negative opinion. That makes Ige a notable outlier, as governors nationwide have seen a surge in popularity amid the pandemic.
Add one to the list of outrageously good Senate polls for Democrats: A new South Carolina survey from Democratic pollster Civiqs, sponsored by Daily Kos, found Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham and his Democratic challenger, Jaime Harrison, tied at 42 percent. However, that same poll gave Trump a 52 percent to 42 percent lead over former Vice President Joe Biden, so many of the voters who said they were undecided or would vote for a third-party candidate in the Senate race (16 percent altogether) may eventually vote Republican.
In a 2014 referendum, Scotland voters said they did not want to secede from the United Kingdom — but that was before Brexit, which most Scots opposed. Now, some Scottish politicians are pushing for a second independence referendum. According to a new Ipsos MORI poll, 63 percent of Scots agree, with 34 percent wanting such a referendum to be held in the next two years. Only 34 percent never want to hold another #indyref.
Trump approval
According to FiveThirtyEight’s presidential approval tracker, 42.6 percent of Americans approve of the job Trump is doing as president, while 53.6 percent disapprove (a net approval rating of -11.0 points). At this time last week, 42.8 percent approved and 53.5 percent disapproved (for a net approval rating of -10.7 points). One month ago, Trump had an approval rating of 42.6 percent and a disapproval rating of 52.6 percent, for a net approval rating of -10.0 points.
Generic ballot
In our average of polls of the generic congressional ballot, Democrats currently lead by 7.7 percentage points (48.2 percent to 40.5 percent). A week ago, Democrats led Republicans by 7.9 points (48.2 percent to 40.3 percent). At this time last month, voters preferred Democrats by 7.9 points (48.3 percent to 40.4 percent).
Check out all the polls we’ve been collecting ahead of the 2020 elections.

Guest Cast
Tumblr media
Gary Morton (Emcee) was a comedian who worked the famed ‘Borscht Belt’ in the Catskills Mountains. He met Lucille Ball shortly after her divorce from Desi Arnaz and they married in November 1961. At her request, Morton gave up his nightclub career and became a producer of “The Lucy Show.” Morton also served as a warm-up comic for the show’s studio audience. In early episodes of the series, his loud guffaw can be heard on the laugh track. He will make three appearances on “Here’s Lucy.” Morton passed away in 1999.
Tumblr media
Jack Collins (Ernie Williams) appeared with Sid Caesar on a 1953 episode of “Texaco Star Theatre” starring Milton Berle. He will also make six appearances on “Here's Lucy.”
Williams and Mr. Mooney are old college fraternity brothers.
Tumblr media
Sid Gould (Waiter) made more than 45 appearances on “The Lucy Show,” all as background characters. He also did 40 episodes of “Here’s Lucy.” Gould (born Sydney Greenfader) was Lucille Ball’s cousin by marriage to Gary Morton.
Don Anderson (Ceremony Guest, uncredited) will also make three appearances on “Here's Lucy.”
George DeNormand (Ceremony Guest, uncredited) appeared in three films with Lucille Ball from 1937 to 1963. This is the just one of his many appearances on “The Lucy Show” and “Here’s Lucy.”
Monty O'Grady (Ceremony Guest, uncredited) was first seen with Lucille Ball in The Long, Long Trailer (1953) and played a passenger on the S.S. Constitution in “Second Honeymoon” (ILL S5;E14). He was a traveler at the airport when “The Ricardos Go to Japan”(1959). He made a dozen appearances on the series and a half dozen more on “Here’s Lucy.”
James Gonzales (Ceremony Guest, uncredited) was a popular Hollywood extra who first acted with Lucille Ball in the 1953 film The Long, Long Trailer. He was previously seen on the series as Stan Williams in “Lucy Digs Up a Date” (S1;E2). He was seen in more than 20 episodes of “The Lucy Show” and 3 episodes of “Here’s Lucy.”
The other ceremony guests and diners at the club restaurant go uncredited as does the quartet of male singers at the ceremony.

This is the end of season 6 and the final episode of the series.  The season ended with a 27 share and the show was #2 in the ratings. In addition to 156 regular half hour episodes, there was one hour-long prime time special titled “Lucy in London” (1967). This represents 79 hours of television!
Only Lucille Ball (Lucy Carmichael) appeared in all 156 episodes
Gale Gordon (Theodore J. Mooney) did 111
Vivian Vance (Vivian Bagley / Bunson) did 81
Jimmy Garrett (Jerry Carmichael) did 55
Ralph Hart (Sherman Bagley) did 44
Candy Moore (Chris Carmichael) and Mary Jane Croft (Audrey / Mary Jane Lewis) tied with 39
Of the background players, Sid Gould appeared in nearly 50 episodes, although not always credited. Also frequently employed were James Gonzales, George DeNormand, Monty O'Grady, Hazel Pierce, and Bennett Green. Of those mentioned, the actor with the greatest longevity on the series is James Gonzales, who was in episode 2 of season 1 and this final episode. Lucy's friends and favorites like Mary Wickes and Carole Cook were also heavily featured in character roles. Nepotism was never a problem for Lucy, who employed Lucie (daughter),  Desi Jr. (son), Gary Morton (husband), Sid Gould (cousin-in-law), Vanda Barra (cousin-in-law), and Cleo Smith (cousin) behind the scenes. During its six seasons on the air, “The Lucy Show” employed more than 450 actors and countless crew and technical staff.  The series was only supposed to last long enough to get Desilu out of financial difficulty. However, Lucille Ball found the work fulfilling and continued for six seasons.
Tumblr media
This final installment was filmed on February 1, 1968. Lucille Ball had sold Desilu (and along with it, the format for “The Lucy Show”) to Gulf & Western / Paramount, and she did not wish to continue to produce a show that she no longer owned. She was also looking to work with her daughter Lucie as well as her son Desi Jr. Lucille Ball Productions (LBP) will return in September 1968 with a revamped series titled “Here's Lucy.” It will still feature Lucille Ball and Gale Gordon (as her employer) and be set in Southern California.
Tumblr media
Airing immediately after “Lucy” on March 11, 1968 “The Andy Griffith Show” broadcast an episode featuring Ken Berry as Sam Jones. Ken Berry was Lucille Ball's protégé and a recent guest star on the series. Like “The Lucy Show” “The Andy Griffith Show” (filmed at Desilu / Paramount) will also be re-formatted and return in the fall of 1968 under a new title: “Mayberry R.F.D.” starring Ken Berry.

The Boss of the Year Award is sponsored by the Businessman's Club.
Tumblr media
Lucy Carter wears the same flowing pastel gown that she wore to the 19th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards on June 4, 1967. She won for Leading Actress in a Comedy Series.
Mr. Mooney and Ernie were members of Alpha Beta Gamma fraternity. Their favorite college drink was sloe gin and root beer (neat).
Mr. Mooney met his wife in college on a blind date. She was a shot putter with a butch haircut and buck teeth. Her maiden name was Klottendorf. Mr. Mooney fails to use her first name, which was previously Irma. The character remained off screen for the entire series. The various horrific descriptions of her were a running gag on the series.
Tumblr media
The episode employs a voice-over of Mr. Mooney writing the letter recommending Mr. Cheever for the award.  This type of thing has never been done on “The Lucy Show” in the past. While he writes under the watchful eye of Abraham Lincoln, the underscoring plays “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.”
Mr. Mooney absentmindedly calls Mary Jane 'Baby Jane.'  The previous episode guest starred Joan Crawford, star of the film What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962).
Mary Jane suggests Lucy literally sing Mr. Mooney's praises instead of write them in a letter. Lucy facetiously suggests “I Got Plenty o' Nuttin'” a song written by George Gershwin for the 1934 folk opera Porgy and Bess. Mary Jane comes up with some more positive suggestions:
“Who's Wonderful?  Who's Marvelous?  Mr. Mooney!” aka “Miss Annabel Lee” written by Sidney Clare, Lew Pollack, and Harry Richman in 1927.
“When the Mooney Comes Over the Mountain” aka “When the Moon Comes Over the Mountain” written in 1931 by Howard Johnson, Harry M. Woods, and Kate Smith.
“Mooney! How I Love Ya!  How I Love Ya!” aka “Swanee” written in 1919 by George Gershwin and Irving Caesar for Al Jolson.
“I'm in Love With Mr....Mooney” aka “Honey (I'm in Love With You)” written in 1928 by Richard A. Whiting, Seymour Simons, and Haven Gillespie. The song was sung by by Desi Arnaz in “Ricky's Hawaiian Vacation” (ILL S3;E22).
“Mooney and Roses” aka “Moonlight and Roses” by Edwin Lamare with lyrics by Ben Black and Neil Moret.
“Mooney River” aka “Moon River” composed by Henry Mancini with lyrics by Johnny Mercer for 1961 for the movie Breakfast at Tiffany's. It won the Oscar for Best Song.
Tumblr media
When the scene opens at the Boss of the Year Awards dinner, couples are dancing to “Spanish Eyes” sung by a unidentified and uncredited male close-harmony quartet. The orchestra plays “Mama Ines” a 1931 song by Cuban composer Eliseo Grenet Sánchez popularized by Xaviar Cugat and sung by Desi Arnaz in “The Freezer” (ILL S1;E29). This is likely at tribute to Arnaz, who served as Executive Producer of “The Lucy Show” for the first half of Season 1.
During the ceremony Lucy performs:
“76 Big Loans” aka "76 Trombones" written by Meredith Willson for the 1957 Broadway musical The Music Man, which was filmed in 1962.
"Thanks For the Memory" by Ralph Rainger and new lyrics by Leo Robin. This was the theme song of Lucy's movie co-star Bob Hope.
Tumblr media
Although there is a ray of hope that Mr. Mooney will earn a promotion to a San Francisco branch of the Westland Bank, the idea is shot down at the last moment by Mr. Cheever's desire to keep Lucy and Mr. Mooney together. This final scene of Lucy honoring Mr. Mooney is fitting since Lucille Ball had been trying since 1951 to re-team with Gale Gordon, who first starred in her successful radio show “My Favorite Husband.”  He was wanted for the role of Fred Mertz but was unavailable. In 1962 Lucy wanted him to play her banker on “The Lucy Show” but he was still under contract to “Dennis the Menace.” When that show was canceled, she was finally able to create a role for him, writing out banker Barnsdahl (Charles Lane) and replacing him with banker Mooney. Gordon would become her sidekick after Vivian Vance departed the series.  This boss / employee relationship will continue on “Here's Lucy” in just six months time.
Blooper Alerts!
Tumblr media
Time Flies! The finale of the installment, a musical number by Lucy saluting Mr. Mooney, refers to Lucy having worked for Mooney for six years. Lucy Carmichael has actually worked for Mr. Mooney only since October 1965, less than three years.
Decorating! To serve the plot, the abstract skyline painting behind Mr. Mooney's desk has been replaced by a portrait of Abraham Lincoln. In two previous episodes, it was replaced (also for plot purposes) by a portrait of George Washington. The office has further been modified with bolt locks on both doors and a framed photo of Mr. Cheever (Roy Roberts) on Mr. Mooney's desk.
Tumblr media
By Any Other Name! Mr. Cheever's first name is back to being Winfield. In “Lucy and the Starmaker” (S6;E4) Winfield was stated to be his middle name.  In “Little Old Lucy” (S6;E7) Mr. Mooney called him Harrison, which would also be Gale Gordon's character name on “Here's Lucy.”

Independent movie studio produced film inspired by the dark lore of Skidmore, Missouri
SKIDMORE, Mo. — A small rural town in northwest Missouri sets the stage for a new movie about violence, disappearance, and mystery. Kansas City filmmaker Clayton Scott will debut his first feature film next year.
Inspired by the crimes and lore of Skidmore, the film centers around the chilling, but fictional, disappearance of Susie Potter. Below the Fold is set a decade after the girl vanished. Two journalists uncovered a nerve-racking new detail in the cold case. This leads the pair on a quest for answers — which ultimately takes them deep into a dark labyrinth nestled in Nodaway County.
The filmmakers opted out of filming in Los Angeles, Atlanta, or other big entertainment metros. Scott felt filming the movie where the story originated would help give the film authenticity and the town the respect that it deserves. The small rural community rests on a hill above the Nodaway River amid cornfields.
Production photo from Below the Fold. Submitted by director Clayton Scott.
Skidmore has a population just under 300. Despite the small size, the town has had cycles of high-profile murders, violence, and disappearances. Many of these tales have inspired writers and television producers. The area is reminiscent of the towns in Maine that influenced some of Stephen King’s most beloved stories.
The 2001 cold case disappearance of Branson Perry heavily influenced Below the Fold. A faded billboard of Perry was sampled for the movie — filmmakers superimposed and manipulated other images onto the sign to make it Susie Potter’s missing person ad. The director felt using the original billboard’s location gave the film an extra layer of authenticity. He also said it is haunting how the years go by and the real billboard image fades, deteriorates, and only an empty shell lingers there. No sets were used in the making of the movie; the crew worked hard to scout out real locations. Clayton argued they may have tried to fit too many locations into the shooting schedule.
The production picture of actress Sarah McGuire peeking into the house was filmed near where Perry went missing. The crew said it was surreal to film in close proximity to where real tragedies took place. Submitted by director Clayton Scott.
The town itself is a character. One of the actors told the director it was easy to get into the right emotion because Skidmore’s gray and overcast skies and abandoned properties spoke volumes. Shooting in fall and winter added to the foreboding feel the director wanted. Clayton mentioned it’s not easy to get to Skidmore:
“It’s not off a major highway, and it’s a tricky drive. The town knows when a stranger is there, and usually visitors come for one reason — because of the lore they have heard.”
Image from Below the Fold teaser trailer.
Clayton didn’t grow up in Skidmore, but close enough to hear stories about the small town. Several of his family members have connections there. A relative of his played with Bobbie Jo Stinnett as a child. Another person he knows reminisces on occasion about how he wanted to take Trena McCloud to prom before her life got mixed up with Ken McElroy.
Many of these tales growing up influenced Clayton’s perspective on the area. Before writing Below the Fold, he read up on everything about the rural community — from message boards, articles, novels, tales from townspeople, and the like. Clayton said people like Ken McElroy had a hold on the community and to this day just about everyone has a story about him.
“One big reason for why this Skidmore lore really hit home for me is not just the McElroy stuff — which is fascinating, but before my time. When those three crimes in the early 2000s happened, it was during a really impressionable time… 12 to 16 years old. And Bobbie Jo’s brutal crime really brought back the national attention to the area. And that really had an impact on my lifelong fascination with the town” Clayton said.

The Hard Work Behind the Scenes
Piecing together an independent movie takes a great deal of initiative and creative thinking. Clayton and his wife Sara Scott, who was an executive producer on the movie, used some of their savings for the movie budget. Through some connections with people in the KC film community, the ball started rolling. It took a couple of years, a few rounds of script drafts, and some tenacity to make it work. A tight skeleton crew filmed the movie on weekends starting in November 2017 and into the winter months.
“No one is going to just tell you to direct an independent movie. You have to buck up and make the $10,000 baby happen yourself” Clayton said.
Several people in Skidmore happily helped the crew, though Clayton said they did run into a couple of strange happenings. A woman yelled at them to get off her property when they were on a sidewalk. An officer also yelled at them for breaking into properties, which they told police wasn’t the case. Clayton said the officer appeared to have mixed them up with someone else who was getting into mischief.
Filming for Below the Fold  wrapped up production just a couple of weeks ago. The filmmakers will submit it to film festivals across the United States and overseas. Those interested in seeing it will have to wait till next year.
Independent studio Rockhaven Films produced the movie. Below the Fold may remind viewers of similar Missouri centered movies or shows, like Winter’s Bone, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri, Gone Girl, Ozark, and The Act.
The movie includes performances from Sarah McGuire who plays Lisa Johnson and Davis DeRock as David Fremont. The three founders of Rockhaven Films worked on it as director of photography, Iain Trimble, editor Edward Schroer, and executive producer Josh Doke. Austin Wagoner produced and acted as assistant director. Clayton’s brother-in-law and sister, Andrew and Jessica Wigger, also worked as executive producers. Original music is by Ho-Ling Tang, production design and art direction by Kristin Yager Holland. Associate producers: Tyler Bachert, Danny Bowersox, Logan Compton, Carlin Larson, and Harrison Sissel.
Clayton is particularly happy with the cinematography and the performances of the actors. He said taking the extra time to focus on shots and do some old school film techniques helped give it the professional quality he wanted. Clayton hopes to direct another movie again, but first he wants Below the Fold to pick up traction at film festivals. A large amount of resources, time, and labor went into bringing out the magic of Skidmore. Clayton wanted the journalists to have the right dialogue, so he consulted with Karra Small, a FOX4 News assignment editor. The journalists in the movie work at The Maryville Forum.
As for the story, Clayton said once he had a clear ending, the rest of the story fell into place.
Daily Life in Skidmore
In reality, Skidmore’s lore is more in the backdrop of the community and more akin to chats at a bar or at a neighbor’s porch. True crime addicts love to talk about Skidmore and Nodaway County, but for natives of the town the harrowing tales bring a kind of dissonance. Many see the rural farming community as a safe place to raise children where they can roam and be free, climb some trees, eat fresh food, play on a rope swing or other rustic playground equipment. It’s a place where adults rise early to work on the farm, clock in at a factory, work at the dozen or so shops, or work in the town offices.
The current mayor of Skidmore, Tracy Shewey, has said before that she sees the dreadfully awful events in the town as isolated incidents. She said the following for a piece in the Missouri Life Magazine back in February 2018:
“Just because those bad things happened doesn’t mean the whole town and the whole community is bad. For newcomers, it does come up. And what we say is, ‘That’s not all that we’re about. We’ve had a couple of things that have been not so pleasant, but to us that doesn’t define the town. Please see past that. If you can’t, you’ve got to move on.’”
Skidmore Origins and Pastimes
William Bunton settled the area for Skidmore in 1840. He did this shortly after the Platte Purchase opened up land to settlement. Skidmore was platted in 1880 when M. Skidmore donated 20 acres to the Nodaway Valley Railroad Company.
The small town is about 45 miles north of St. Joseph. It has a few shops and restaurants from Backwoods Bar & Grill, Good Time Charlie’s, Countryside Café & Catering, Looks Salon & Day Spa, and Farmers Frame & Auto Repair. There is at least one bank, church, and a postal office. As of the 2010 census, about 285 people live in the city, residing in 122 households, and broken into 81 families. Demographics wise, it’s about 99.3% white, 0.4% Native American, and 0.4% listed as another ethnicity.
The infamous crimes and mysteries put Skidmore in the national light, but the daily run-of-the-mill activities are much more tame. The city council has worked hard the past few years to pass ordinances to keep yards tidier, the city sewage system needs updating, many of the adults work multiple jobs, neighbors bring cookies and help carry boxes for newcomers, and there is an effort to attract live music acts to venues. Skidmore is also full to the brim with fruit pies and fried chicken dinners.
One of the biggest pieces of news for the community this year wasn’t crime-related. Instead after years of rumors, the Skidmore Punkin Show finally returned. This past August was the first time the small farming community held a “Punkin Show” since 2004. Event staff wanted to bring back the festival as a way to unify families, children, and neighbors. Activities included musical acts, a barbecue cook-off, a horseshoe tournament, a cake walk, a pie-eating contest, tire throwing, skillet-throwing, and bingo.
Crimes and Other Mysteries
Nodaway County overall has a population of about 22,810. It was on the frontier in its earliest days and has a long history of violence. The first execution in the county took place in Maryville on July 22, 1881. The town hanged two brothers, Albert Talbott and Charles Talbott, after a court convicted them of killing their own father, Dr. Perry Talbott. The local physician, newspaper editor, and state legislator died on September 18, 1880 at his home in Arkoe, a town he helped co-found. He blamed his political enemies for his demise with his final dying breath. Nevertheless, authorities charged the sons with the crime, and despite their pleas of innocence — the jury didn’t see otherwise.
The brothers’ tombstone in the family cemetery is a vertical column with two hands clasped in friendship. The inscription reads: “We Died Inocent.” The word “innocent” is misspelled on the headstone.
The Ken McElroy Shooting
A murder from the early 1980s first put Skidmore in the international spotlight. A man considered a town bully had upset too many people, and this led to a violent retaliation against him.
On July 10, 1981, Ken McElroy died in a rain of bullets. Investigators confirmed the shooting included at least two guns. McElroy was shot while sitting in his truck in front of the D&G Tavern. A crowd of about three dozen people witnessed the crime in broad daylight, but all of them denied seeing anything that would help police identify the culprits.
McElroy’s reputation far preceded him. He had a long list of offenses following him from theft, rape, child molestation, arson, hog and cattle rustling, burglary, and assault. In the months before his murder, McElroy was appealing a light sentence for shooting a 70-year-old grocer in the neck — he was out of jail on bond. Many of the townspeople were annoyed with the courts’ inability to properly deal with him and get him off the streets permanently. No one was ever prosecuted for McElroy’s murder. It’s an unsolved likely vigilante-style murder.
Ken McElroy
The man’s life doesn’t get anymore pleasant with closer examination. McElroy met his last wife, Trena McCloud, when she was an eighth grader at the shy age of 12. He fathered more than 10 children in his lifetime with different women and minors.
Trena became pregnant at the age of 14. She dropped out of school her freshmen year of high school and then moved-in with Ken and his third wife, Alice. Ken eventually divorced Alice and married Trena — in part to avoid charges of statutory rape.
Sixteen days after Trena gave birth, both she and Alice ran away to Trena’s mother’s and stepfather’s house. Court records indicate Ken found both Trena and Alice there and that he brought both of them back to his residence.
Sometime later Ken went back to Trena’s parents’ house. Realizing her relatives were not there, he shot the family dog and burned down the home.
Ken McElroy
On July 9, 1984, Trena McElroy filed a $6 million wrongful death lawsuit against the Town of Skidmore, Nodaway County and its Sheriff Danny Estes, Mayor of Skidmore Steve Peters, and Del Clement. Trena accused the last person as the shooter in the crime. The case settled out of court by all parties for much less than what Trena was seeking: a sum of $17,600. No one admitted any guilt. Trena remarried and moved to Lebanon in southwest Missouri. She died of cancer on her 55th birthday on January 24, 2012.
Author Harry N. MacLean wrote about Ken McElory in his bestselling and award-winning book, In Broad Daylight. In 1991 a made-for-TV movie portrayed the events — although it was filmed in Texas. The Ken McElroy shooting was also the focus of an episode on the A&E Network program City Confidential. It also served as story material for a Drunk History episode, as inspiration for a song by British hard-rock band UFO, a web series episode by BuzzFeed, and as fodder for multiple podcasts.
Death of Wendy Gillenwater
On October 16, 2000 Greg Dragoo beat and stomped on his girlfriend, Wendy Gillenwater. He dragged her down several country roads outside Skidmore leading to her death. Detectives found Gillenwater’s body outside her home. An autopsy revealed someone had stomped on her brutally. Prosecutors charged Dragoo with murder. A Nodaway County Judge sentenced him to life in prison. He is currently incarcerated in the Western Missouri Correctional Center in Cameron.
The Disappearance of Branson Perry
On April 11, 2001, 20-year-old Branson Perry vanished from his father’s home in Skidmore. Someone last saw him walking from the house to a storage shed. No one has ever been charged in his disappearance, but there has been at least one suspect: Fulton resident Jack Wayne Rogers. He is in prison now for other crimes. Rogers did at one point brag about murdering Perry. He later denied ever knowing him.
Branson Perry
Rogers appeared like a lawful, good citizen. He was a Presbyterian minister and a Boy Scouts leader, but he had many disturbing secrets. Officers arrested Rogers on child pornography and obscenity charges, as well as first-degree assault, and practicing medicine without a license. His troubles came to light when he removed a trans woman’s genitals in a makeshift gender reassignment surgery at a hotel in Columbia, Missouri. The operation, as you would expect, didn’t go well. Rogers couldn’t stop the bleeding and the woman called 9-1-1.
While investigating Rogers’ personal belongings, police discovered child porn on his computer. Detectives also found message boards where Rogers graphically described torturing and assaulting multiple men. Rogers claimed all the posts were only macabre fantasies. One of those posts described picking up a blond male hitchhiker, then raping, torturing, and murdering him. Rogers also wrote about burying the body somewhere in the Ozarks. While performing a search at Rogers’ property, detectives found a turtle claw necklace resembling one Perry used to wear.
A court sentenced Rogers to 17 years in prison for assault on the trans woman and seven years for performing illegal surgery. He also received 30 years for child pornography. At his sentencing, Perry’s mother, Rebecca Klino, pleaded for Rogers to reveal what he did to her son. Rogers again denied any involvement in the young adult’s disappearance. After the sentencing, Klino said she no longer believed Rogers was responsible for her son’s disappearance:
“The police are not completely ruling him out, but now the investigation has turned toward Skidmore again. They have received new leads there. I suppose time has a way of unraveling secrets. I believe someone in that area knows what happened to Branson. In my heart, I don’t believe this suspect is responsible. Despite the nightmare I lived through [at his sentencing], I am thankful that someone with that much evil will never walk the streets again.”
Sadly, both of Perry’s parents died a handful of years after he disappeared. Bob Perry died in 2004. Rebecca Klino died in February 2011 after battling melanoma cancer. In her obituary, it noted that Klino was “preceded in death” by her son. She was buried beside an empty plot for Perry. It lists his date of death as April 11, 2001, the same day he vanished.
Murder of Bobbie Jo Stinnett
On December 16, 2004, Skidmore once again received national attention when Bobbie Jo Stinnett, a relative of Branson Perry, was murdered. She was eight months pregnant at the time and someone had cut her unborn baby from her womb. After an extensive search aided by the public, police found the baby alive at a farmhouse in Melvern, Kansas. Police arrested Lisa Montgomery; she eventually received a federal death sentence for killing Bobbie Jo. The baby, Victoria  Jo Stinnett, survived the attack and kidnapping. She now lives with her father, Zeb Stinnett. Victoria Jo is 14 years old.
Bobbie Jo Stinnett
Before the murder, Bobbie Jo and Zeb ran a dog-breeding business from their home. Montgomery met Stinnett online in a rat terrier chatroom called “Ratter Chatter.” Stinnett was expecting buyers for a terrier about the time of her murder. In messages, Montgomery told Stinnett she too was pregnant and excited about motherhood. The women happily chatted online and exchanged emails about their pregnancies. Authorities believe Montgomery, posing as “Darlene Fischer” arranged to meet with Bobbie Jo at her home on December 16, 2004  — the day of the murder.
Montgomery’s former husband testified in court that she had a history of falsely telling strangers and new acquaintances she was pregnant — and this was after she had her tubes tied in 1990. Her doctor recommended she undergo the surgery after her fourth child was born two months premature.
Police said Montgomery and her current husband Kevin showed off Stinnett’s baby as their own in Melvern before her arrest. Kevin said he had no part in the killing. He also testified about fake pregnancies during the marriage. He said Montgomery told him she got an abortion for a fetus in New Mexico. The second fake pregnancy, she told him something was wrong with the baby and she donated it to science. He claimed he didn’t realize at the time that these were lies.
Lisa Montgomery is currently the only woman with a federal death sentence incarcerated at Federal Medical Center, Carswell in Fort Worth, Texas.
New and emerging technology aided in the investigation. An issued AMBER alert enlisted the public’s help in finding the baby, DNA testing confirmed the infant’s identity, and an enormous amount of media attention helped bring in tips.
Lisa Montgomery
Author Diane Fanning described the case in her book Baby Be Mine and M. William Phelps described it in his novel Murder in the Heartland. The case was also featured in the 5th episode of the documentary No One Saw A Thing. The documentary just premiered on the Sundance Channel on August 29, 2019.

5 Things I Love About Australia (and One I Loathe)
Want the Australia Letter by email? Sign up and forward it to friends so we can expand our discussion about Australia and the world.
______
Last week, I wrote about Australia and foreign policy — examining the federal budget for signs of how Australia sees itself and its global mission.
This week, like the country itself, I’m looking inward.
That’s not always a welcome trait — navel-gazing tends to be unattractive in both lovers and nations — but I’ve been thinking lately about what Australia is so eager to protect.
Clearly, there’s a lot, but let’s be honest: These things are personal. And they change.
So think of the list below as a temporal snapshot, in the spirit of Nick Hornby’s “High Fidelity.” These are the things on repeat in my mental playlist at the moment.
Got your own Top 5? Send it our way at [email protected], or share your list in our Facebook group.
And now, the five things I really love about Australia at this very moment:
1. The Coastline, I Mean, I Can’t Even
A cliché? Yeah maybe, but seriously, how fantastically gorgeous is the Australian coast?
From Sydney’s rocky cliffs to the Northern Territory’s tropical lagoons to the Great Ocean Road to Noosa to Denmark’s ruggedness (easily the best part of “Breath,” the movie), I am perpetually amazed at the rich bounty of the world’s most beautiful island continent.
I am eternally grateful whenever I get near it, even when I’m getting smashed by waves that remind me I don’t know how to surf.
2. Johnny Spit
Whenever I watch Australian movies — this week “Dead Calm” (great) and “Breath” (disappointing) — I find myself comparing the writing and characters to Johnny Spit, the scene-stealer of “Gettin’ Square” played by David Wenham.
John Francis Spiteri is the ultimate larrikin, a savant, a satirist and a fool all at the same time. I long for the day when I can cock my head just the way he does and tell someone, as he does in court, “Hey, you’re trying to verbal me, trying to put words in my mouth!”
3. Attica
Ben Shewry’s restaurant in Melbourne is nothing short of a world-class gem. Dinner for two may cost as much as a diamond but it’s the kind of experience that sticks with you like a favorite wedding.
I’ve had many great meals in my life, in many cities and countries. Attica tops the list. Hands down.
4. Understated #Auspol
When I went to interview John Howard, the former prime minister, I ran into him in the elevator, alone, without an entourage.
When I was in Manus reporting on Australia’s offshore detention center there, I ran into Nick McKim, the Greens senator from Tasmania, traveling alone, without staff.
Never could I have imagined such a thing happening in the United States or in many other countries where I’ve worked. The accessibility and willingness to eschew the trappings of power were a welcome sight.
On the other hand, no one in Canberra seems to get along and Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has repeatedly refused our interview requests.
5. Work-Life Balance
Maybe it was during Nippers, or when the people who run my son’s soccer club pointed out that everyone involved is a volunteer — but at some point I realized there are structures of life in Australia that depend on parents being there for their kids in significant ways.
A lot of those link to sport, sure, but there was no shortage of parents at my daughter’s dance recital either, and what that tells me is that this is a society that treats work as just one part of a fulfilled life.
There is an expectation of balance or at least a respect for it as a lived reality (Americans write about it more than they live it) that I find enormously refreshing after moving here from New York.
Many Australians probably don’t even notice it, but for me, it’s nothing short of thrilling and wondrous.
… And one thing I loathe:
No, it’s not Vegemite, but close. It’s food delivery.
Here in Sydney, there are at least three online providers, Deliveroo, Foodora and Uber Eats. I’ve tried them all. They’re terrible.
It’s not necessarily their fault. Restaurants appear and disappear on their apps, delivering some days, not others. Menus are just as fungible and wait times often extend mysteriously like gambling debts.
Yes, this is a first-world problem. No, it doesn’t change how much I love it here. But still.
Now for news of the week and some don’t-miss features — plus ya know, another recommendation.

A decade ago when I covered Iraq, many of us figured Moktada al-Sadr would eventually run the country. Now it might actually be happening. Here’s what’s going on and why it matters.
• The Truth About Mass Shootings in Australia: The Father Usually Did It: Gun deaths are exceptionally rare in Australia, but those that do occur are often suicides. Mass shootings usually involve family members.
• David Goodall, 104, Scientist Who Fought to Die on His Terms, Ends His Life: Mr. Goodall wanted to die because of his deteriorating health, and he flew to Switzerland to find legal services to assist him, choosing Beethoven for his last song.
Culture / Fun
• Troye Sivan Is a New Kind of Pop Star: Here, Queer and Used to It: The 22-year-old singer is climbing the charts while demonstrating how his sexual orientation is both part of his art and beside the point.
• An Australian Environmentalist’s Next Act: ‘Frugal Hedonism’: David Holmgren, who decades ago encouraged homeowners to turn their backyards into gardens, is now calling for suburbanites to go further off the grid.
• ‘Man With the Golden Arm’ Saved Millions of Australian Babies With His Blood: After six decades of giving blood, James Harrison, 81, has made his final donation. A rare antibody in his blood helped save more than two million babies, officials said.
• ‘I’m Here With You, Mate’: A picture that captures the true spirit of Aussie sportsmanship and mateship.
• Why Australian College Graduates Feel Sorry for Their American Counterparts: Readers point to a simpler way to pay back loans and avoid “soul-crushing debt.”
• Hot Grapes and Liver: Outtakes From an Australian Restaurant Critic: Many spots don’t make the cut — but some are still worth visiting.
______
… And We Recommend
When we were in Tasmania, we visited a number of vineyards (our children were not pleased) and last week, the boxes of wine we ordered finally arrived.
Our two favorites are from the Craigie Knowe Vineyard: the 2017 chardonnay (light, not too oaky) and their 2017 riesling (crisp but flavorful).
You can order both from its website if you get the urge.
