hello hello!! I don't know how common it is, but I've heard some libraries have maker spaces (sewing machines, 3d printers, etc) do yall have such a place?
We do! Ours is located at our Merrillville Branch and is called the Libratory: www.lcplin.org/libratory
Tumblr media
We don't have sewing machines but we do have 3D printers. When we created the Libratory we were mainly focused on the preservation of physical media, so most of our stuff is dedicated to that. We have special scanners for slides and photos as well as equipment to convert old film reels, VHS, cassettes, etc.
We expanded to add the 3D printers (we have a BambuLab X1-Carbon and a Dremel 3D45), then a WhisperRoom, which is a sound booth for recording music, podcasts, podfics, whatever. It's equipped with mics, software, audio interfaces and mixers and all that good stuff.
Tumblr media
It's hard to grab the whole Libratory in a photo, but here's a promo video that has close ups of lots of our equipment and breaks down what you can do in there (video has captions):
youtube
[ID: Video panning around the room pictured earlier in the post. It focuses in on someone scanning photos and old film strips, then shows someone using a VHS converter, a DVD converter, and a converter for Hi-8 and Super-8 film. Next is the 8mm film converter, which threads the actual film on to a device that looks like a projector. Then they show the cassette capture and turntable record converter. A woman comes in and hands over a box of old material to demonstrate a drop-off conversion service where the librarians convert your material for you. Finally, the video shows someone sitting down inside the WhisperRoom and using the laptop and sound board to record voice audio. For details on all of the equipment and services shown you can visit www.lcplin.org/libratory /ID]
That's the basics! Just let me know if you have any more questions!

Okay, so, I didn't read a whole lot this month. Hear me out. I'm not mad about it. I got SO much crafting done across different mediums. Nothing to show for it, really, but I'm having so much fun being creative in a way I haven't felt in a very long time. I think I might actually be able to set up some type of tiny shop about it, too. Got my embroidery machine up and running in a way that allows me to create my own designs, and when I tell you the creative juices are flowing, boy howdy it's like a dam has broken. I also started pokemon Violet, and while that's slow going, I'm having a lot of fun with it. So, no I'm not mad at my reading habits this month.
Tumblr media
In the Ravenous Dark by AM Strickland ⭐️⭐️⭐️ - Phew. Okay. This was. A very bumpy ride. The first half was a slog, honestly, and the writing and pacing is not great, but the last third or so reminded me a lot of Beyond the Ruby Veil which was also not outstanding, but it was fun. Fucked up, feral lesbians. Poly family friendship going on. The plot is so basic, the magic neat, the worldbuilding lacking. I would not read it again, but at the end I'm not entirely mad I did.
Dark Matter by Blake Crouch ⭐️ - I don't even know what to say. I didn't expect to be wowed, I went in expecting no more than a mediocre thriller. What I got was A Book Written By A Man™️. How many times can a guy fridge one wife? Infinitely, apparently! I was semi on board until he started fighting his other selves. That was dumb as shit.
The Art of Prophecy by Wesley Chu ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - *Gordon Ramsay voice* Finally, a good fucking book. This took me most of the month to read, but I'm not mad about it. It was nice to sit quietly with this book, and while it took it's time, I never felt bored with it. I can't really pinpoint what keeps it from five stars, and maybe my rating will change in the future, but I did really enjoy this. It has a wonderful cast, everyone felt very real and well rounded, it was bloody, but never felt gratuitously so. It was a good book and I very much want to continue the series.
Favorite of the month was most definitely Art of the Prophecy. Kind of unfair because Dark Matter was such a disaster, but Ravenous Dark had it's perks. Mainly being batshit crazy and ending in polyamory.
My friends, as always, have been incredibly kind to me. I could not have gotten through the last couple months without them. Would like to do a couple of buddy reads in the coming months. I really did like taking my time with a longer book, and I think I'm ready to tackle the final book in the Rook and Rose trilogy. My library also finally got a copy of The Bone Maker on audio and while I haven't listened to an audiobook since December, I'm excited to give that a listen. As always, be kind whenever possible.

I have this tiny-ass screwdriver (5 cm long!!) so. yeah
The upper half is giving me some serious fucking trouble but it's also pretty late and it has a considerable amount of details so I'll just finish this tomorrow. Wooo Demon Core

I firmly believe that the solution to 99% of the problems we're facing as a society right now is Building Community
And the best part of this solution? Everyone can participate to the extent they are able/willing and it doesn't need to reach a critical mass to make a significant difference. Every community that is built, whether it's between two people or an entire town, is beneficial to all of us.
You don't need special skills to do it, you don't need to know how to organize or even be good at socializing! It can be as simple as shoveling snow from your neighbours sidewalk even if you never speak to them.
We all have skills we're good ar and enjoy, we all have resources others lack. I don't have much money but I've got endless time, for example, so a friend drops her dog off with me a couple days a week. I don't charge her because I benefit in other ways but also because it helps build community. Not asking for cash allows her to pay using resources she has more of, either to me directly (she drives me home from my hospital appointments each monday), and indirectly by helping others which further builds our community in a pay it forward sort of way.
Community uses Good Will and Favours as currency instead of money and it's the only thing that can break the back of capitalism.
Community can take a lot of up front investment to get started, and not every person you invest in will add value, but in the long run your total return investment will be more than returned to you.

for a while mom has been trying to figure out a way that dad and I could go into business together somehow, but it's always like kind of awkward because he's really opposed to doing sketchy under the table stuff.
I think I finally figured out a good collab project though- dad's been doing a booth at a local paleontology con the last few years selling prints and stuff, so I floated the idea of doing a zine together about paleontology stuff to sell there. he seemed pretty on board, although I was thinking of doing like, a magazine with articles so I could get some typesetting practice in, and dad was clearly thinking of doing a more straightforward art book with preexisting materials.
mom got back from her bereavement trip yesterday and she and dad got to talking about the project, and it pretty quickly expanded to 3 art books, and then I explained what I wanted, and that got tacked on as a 4th booklet. and then we hypothesized about doing some buttons, and maybe I should learn blender so we can get some figurines printed (no way that's happening in 6 months lmao), and...
so I might have quite a bit of doujinshi work lined up over the next few months. exciting.

i love you 3dprinters i love you people who make the blueprint things for them and put them online for free. thinking of that inventor who designed a pill bottle that was more friendly for users with hand tremors and immediately put the printy plans up and last i heard was trying to figure out a way to distribute them at cost

Sorry to ask, but would you ever be willing to make custom art dolls? :0 And if you sell them where can I find them? Your art is so so cool!
Probably not, there's so many variables when it comes to constructing bespoke dolls that I cant begin to wrap my head around trying to price commissions (and also I'm mega prone to burnout when I'm not doing something I'm super into and would feel bad about having to turn so many folks down)
My dolls are made available on my Etsy (link in pinned) and I typically announce in advanced when I'm doing a drop. Keep an eye out because they usually sell out within the hour or quicker
