whether it be this past grueling work week, or constant, uncomfortable family affairs; a friday night distraction was in due time.
you, sam, and a couple of his bandmates were crowded into a small section of some poorly lit pub downtown. dusty pictures hung from the mustard yellow walls, inside their frames being photographs of family and old friends of the owner. noisy, drunken conversation sounding throughout the establishment is nearly overwhelming.
you don’t know how many drinks sam has had so far in the evening, but you’re going to tell him off if he doesn’t rein it in soon.
maybe not. ‘that’ll be annoying,�� you think apprehensively. he deserves a break, too.
sam’s hand rests lightly on the small of your back, rubbing comforting little circles. his eyes then travel from dean laughing, to joe telling a story of some sort, to you.
he scrunches his face in the silly way he always does, trying to make you smile, before pressing a few kisses to your temple. a springsteen song plays over the crappy speakers, which you can just barely hear. sam sings along under his breath while still somewhat listening to whatever joe is going on about.
“hi.” you say, head resting on your hand. sam has to bend down a little bit so his ear is right near your mouth.
“hi.” you repeat, a little louder this time. sam says ‘hi,’ too, and steals a quick kiss.
“whatcha think?” he asks.
“fun.”
“really?”
“mhm.” you confirm, nodding your head quickly. you don’t really mean it, but you know sam is enjoying himself. why ruin that?
sam pats your head and then continues on listening to joe - adding some ‘ah’s and ‘mhm’s in between pauses of his story.
maybe 15 - 20 minutes go by before you’re really, truly done with the night. your eyes meander up to the analog clock on the wall, which reads 12:00 am. you’re more aware of the sole of your sneaker sticking to the gross hardwood floor, tom’s foot accidentally kicking yours under the table, the dehydration-induced headache forming behind your eyes.
sam is the first to notice.
despite your several protests and feeling terribly guilty, he insists its time to leave. he, too, is getting a little tired. of this. of everything. with one pitiful look, sam is pulling out your chair and holding out your jacket.
“c’mon, up you get.” he says, so you do.
after saying bye to your friends, who also look about ready to leave, you’re out the door. the cold air makes your cheeks pink and the wind messes up your hair.
almost halfway home, sam stops abruptly on the sidewalk, right under a warm streetlamp. you look up at his face and can nearly see the gears turning in his head…or maybe you see the little hamster running on the wheel.
‘your song’ by elton john begins to play, seeming to do so magically from thin air. then you realize it’s actually coming from the open window of someone’s townhome. sam’s eyes light up and he so much as gasps, before extending a hand out to you. “care to dance?” he asks, in the worst possible victorian accent a person could manage.
its a little awkward. the music isn’t loud enough to cancel out the sound of rubber sole against pavement, or the little frustrated noises he makes when he misses a step.
but its sweet, and you laugh.
once the song ends, you stumble home in his arms, face smushed into the black leather of his jacket.

“anything.”

Today I rode 60 miles, from Green Bay to Sheboygan Falls. I was uncertain how far I was going to go, and the oddity of finding the perfect distance in a place like Wisconsin struck again. Either the route was too short, or too long, but there was so little in the "right" distance that I had to choose one or the other. I had an extra day allocated to get from Marinette to Chicago, so I opted to go for the slightly shorter distance at 60 miles.
Before I left, I had another quick chat with the desk manager at the Super 8. He was a pleasant man, and we had a brief conversation the day prior about what I was doing, where I was going, etc... He mentioned that he met a guy working at a different hotel that was riding from Washington state to Maine, and was passing through. Also, he was in his 70s. We agreed that this was inspirational and inspiring, and that, personally, when I get to that age, I hope to still be doing cool things.
I was relieved to get out of Green Bay. Riding into Green Bay the day before was a harrowing experience. You see, the city has made gestural attempts at bike infrastructure. A bike lane here. A bike path there. If you know the streets and are not going that far, it probably is enough to allow for some degree of commuting. On all of these accounts though, I was not the target audience, and that makes cities all the more difficult for me and my bike to safely navigate.
Something that most people who use cars, buses, or other motorized vehicles for the vast VAST majority of their transportation probably don't see is how car-based infrastructure divides spaces in different ways to different road users. For instance, think of any road that consists of four lanes, two lanes going one way, the other two going the other way. In a vehicle, it's merely a matter of patience to pull out onto this street, if you should need to cross it. You can trust your engine to get you across, given adequate time and space.
To a cyclist however, these streets are always frightening. Despite what many people will tell you about "arsehole cyclists takin' up da roads" and such, trust me when i say we are deeply aware of our vulnerability. A fender bender to you is paralysis or death to us. We may wear a helmet, but the clothing we wear beyond that is no additional protection. And it's certainly not the two-tons of metal, glass, plastic, cushions, and airbags that surround the average driver.
City transportation infrastructure updates to alleviate traffic congestion are also problematic to non-drivers. I'm talking about roundabouts, which when people understand how to use them (as most Americans are, as this European import becomes increasingly common), they function quite well to keep traffic moving.
But on a bike, roundabouts are very unpredictable, so much so that I dread crossing one more so than a basic 4-way intersection. Much of this stems from the massive difference in speed at which one takes a roundabout when on a bike versus a car. Roundabouts work well during times of heavier traffic when those pulling into the roundabout can blend into the flow through the circle. A pause at the entrance, and a touch of the gas and you're in.
Bikes don't accelerate with that speed, especially one loaded down with clothes, food, electronics, and a 150 lb. squishy human being.
So I don't ride roundabouts when there's substantial traffic present. I walk the bike through the sidewalks.
I was relieved when I left the city, and could return to the country lanes. Farm country now, as far as the eye can see. For hours, seeing field after field on both sides. There were trees that signaled forests and some welcome variety (not to mention shade), but they always seemed too far in the distance, and too short in duration.
Wisconsin of course was not always like this. Once it was covered in forests (I imagine). But we've flattened it, terraformed it, turned it into an enormous agricultural space to support an enormous human population.
This section of Wisconsin feels like riding in the plains. Big sky and big wind. Sometimes pushing you along, sometimes shoving you from the side. Sometimes it slaps you in the face.
My route tries to keep me from riding along any highways, thankfully, but this doesn't mean that I avoid the entirely. You still have to cross them from time to time. And, as expected, these can be harrowing if there are any vehicles present. At least a couple of times, I ended up sitting beside a road for 5, 10 minutes waiting for there to be sufficient space and time to cross a highway safely.
Being on a bike makes you see space differently, through our different relationship to the built environment, like our highways or our roundabouts. What's a space of movement or mobility to many, is a wall to us. We see the space we live in as cut up into semi-autonomous squares or plots of land, borders secured not by walls but by flowing streams of metal and rubber that threaten to grind up foreign contaminants, like a bicycle.
I am reminded of the experiments that biologists do on contained populations of fauna through the little plots of lands in clovers around highway on and off ramps. Unknown to most who pass by, these little islands are themselves semi-controlled spaces due to the almost impossibility of safely traveling in or out of the space if you can't fly.
To a cyclist, the world is full of these semi-autonomous islands. I wonder how many purely motorized vehicle drivers know this. Or even care.
In any case, shortly before I got to my hotel for the night, I pulled into a university campus just outside Sheboygan Falls. Lakeland University. Go Muskies!
I leaned my bike up against a tree and sat down at a park bench under a tree and downed three bananas, one apple, and several handfuls of almonds. Once I took a breath, reflected on how I pulled into that campus: I rode along the walkways, as they curved over and around the campus, linking building to building.

He was built in 1969 in a factory in Fremont, California… a man named Luis was the one to apply the decal that would mark him as special amongst the other GTO’s that came off the line. His shiny black paint that wasn’t just black caught the eye of many envious onlookers when he was unloaded at the small car lot in Sacramento, especially when he took pride of place in their showroom. But it was a young kid who saved all summer who finally came in and laid down his purchase price that rolled him out onto the free streets of his early years. The kid’s name was Tim, Timmy to his friends and Timothy to his father. He had just graduated high school and had a pension for going a little too fast, learning quickly that his ram air cooled engine was not to be taken lightly. But he never mistreated him and Judge knew right away that he had been this kid’s dream car. They spent three amazing years together, cruising the scenic highways and byways, enjoying the amazing California sun, sand, and surf. He didn’t even mind the temporary rack the kid put on his roof to hold his surfboard. That all changed when they called out those numbers during the last draft lottery in 1972. His father drove him back from the bus station and parked him in the garage, throwing a brand-new tarp over him once his engine had cooled down. He never saw Tim again.
Fifteen years later, the sun was brighter than he remembered it being. The auctioneer was loud and talked way too fast. The people that poked around under his hood, jabbed fingers into his seats to test their springiness, and checked to make sure he still had all his original parts were confusing. He was bought for half his original purchase price and loaded into a shipping container. He’d never see American soil again. Being exported to the United Kingdom was an adventure he hadn’t considered but one he was being sent on anyway. He couldn’t help but wonder if Tim had been this nervous when he went away. He was unloaded straight into a small, almost too tiny glass fronted metal building with other American imports. He wasn’t there long before a middle-aged man bought him for thrice what the importer paid for him. The man couldn’t stop yacking about how cool it was going to be to have a muscle car. But it wasn’t cool. He got a scratch on his fender the first day. Turns out… he was just too big for this country. Too big for the roads… too wide for the towns… and too loud for the villages. And too expensive to keep fueled. Within a year, the man parked him under a lean-to shed beside an old stone building. The man didn’t want to get rid of him but couldn’t afford to drive him either. The roof leaked and the wind blew the rain in sideways anyway. The mice from the fields made a home in his backseat cushions with the rubber from the wires they chewed through. What was once sparkly black pain turned dull and what was once beauty turned just as gray and drab as the country he found himself in.
With the new millennia, the Judge felt a small hand force the handle on his driver’s side door open, jarring him back to a certain kind of consciousness. The woman was slight but confident, had an air of knowledge when she popped his hood. She muttered under her breath, cursed the state he was in and by the end of the day, he was being loaded onto the flat bed of one of those strange flat nosed trucks. She called herself Indiana. It took her years to restore him. She took her time and did it right… sometimes it’d be weeks where he would see nothing but the closed door of her garage, nothing but a motorcycle for company. Then, she’d be back and it was like she never left. When she had to wait for parts, she’d just move on to fixing something else. It took her two years before she was turning her garage into a paint booth. He was nervous then… would she paint him some obnoxious color? Like neon green?! Or that gaudy orange?! But he needn’t have worried. She’d sent away for the special black. And finally, the last thing she did before applying a sturdy clear coat was apply his decal. If he could have purred, he would have. She brought him back. Decades of being left to rot, forgotten and neglected… and she made it all go away. The first time she took him out… the world had changed so much but she treated him right. She knew where she could take him and where she couldn’t. And though his anxiety spiked when she pulled him back into the garage… he quickly got over that. He became her daily driver. He wasn’t some fancy thing to keep locked up. He was a car. Her car. He’d hear people at her work ask to drive him and she’d shut them down right quick and in a hurry. Because he was her car. And that’s how it stayed. For a long time. He grew comfortable in that one, undeniable fact.
Until a fucking redwood slid behind the wheel. He called himself Simon. He didn’t care if he called himself the fucking Pope. If he could have not started, he would have done that. But he wasn’t going to embarrass all of her hard work. Simon was nervous… as he should have been, Judge had thought. But… eventually, he came to accept that sometimes this giant of a man would drive him. He only accepted it because he always came back to her. And for years, that’s how it stayed.
But then something changed. He wasn’t sure what exactly. But someone new climbed behind the wheel. Another man. An older man. He was respectful and reverent, not nervous. He seemed almost… giddy, in a certain sense. He didn’t go too slow but he didn’t see what he could do, either. He drove him like she did. Like he was just a regular car. It left him… wanting the man to test him out… let him show him what he had under the hood. Let him blow someone’s doors clean off. But he didn’t test him. He knew things were changing, things he didn’t understand. When they arrived at base that morning… and Simon was standing there, looking like someone had stolen something from him. Judge didn’t care what was going on with the men, as long as one of them made sure the keys found their way back to her hand at the end of the day.
Because he was her car… and always would be.

The Mystery of Grocery Carts

I am sitting in the car reading Russell Edson. It’s raining heavily. Roberta has gone into the grocery store for whipped cream and lettuce. The car is parked in a large parking lot. Water flows down the windshield in blurry sheets through which I can barely make out the red neon sign across Queen Anne Avenue North that says Hot Subs Elliott Bay Pizza Company. A man in a blue shirt gets into a blue Dodge and drives away. A younger man in a green Volkswagen Rabbit with a crushed left fender takes his place. A man walks past with a cigarette dangling from his lower lip and I wonder how he has managed to keep the cigarette going all this way in such heavy rain. He is almost finished with it. He stubs it out and goes into the grocery store. I look to the left and notice beads of water dripping from the wires of the grocery cart. Wait a minute. Are they wires or rods? Is there a word for that particular part of the grocery cart anatomy? Would they more properly be described as bars? Crosspieces? Crossbars? Meshwork? Web-work? Reticulum? I suddenly realize how arbitrary and limited language can be. The inability to describe the framework of a grocery cart, or the way the water descends the windshield, or the contrast between the poplars wavering in front of a gray sky, the acutely delineated branches of the poplars against the amorphous gray of the sky, which isn’t actually gray, but more of an opalescent off-white, with here and there deepening areas of gray that diffuse into the white. Perhaps I could say the sky holds the garrulity of milk in its murmur of rain and oxygen. The meat of the air sings to the mud of the earth and as the rain splatters against the glass of the windshield, the emotional life of the sky describes itself as a rubber band of deep silence stretching into the galaxies in which the gentle truth of apple blossoms are invented in troughs of promiscuous ambiguity.
But none of this solves the true problem at hand which is what to call the rods or wires on the framework of a grocery cart. And when did the grocery cart first enter human history? Did the Sumerians use grocery carts? Did the Babylonians use grocery carts? Is the grocery cart an adjunct of the automobile? Do the nomads of Mauritania long to push grocery carts? Why do so many grocery carts find themselves lying in creeks and culverts and roadside ditches? Where are grocery carts produced? Is there a city known for its production of grocery carts? Is there a Detroit of grocery carts?
Roberta returns to the car with whipped cream and lettuce and a bunch of other stuff. “Where to now,” I say. “Let’s go to the video store,” she answers. I start the car and we leave. I say nothing about grocery carts. I decide to leave the mystery of grocery carts alone for a while. My thoughts turn instead to the complexities of driving, and the fathomless mystery of gas, and combustion, and what movie to rent, and the harsh yet wonderful glow of taillights in spring rain.
