Microsoft acquires Mover to help with Microsoft 365 cloud migration
Microsoft wants to make it as easy as possible to migrate to Microsoft 365, and today the company announced it had purchased a Canadian startup called Mover to help. The companies did not reveal the acquisition price.
Microsoft 365 is the companyâs bundle that includes Office 365, Microsoft Teams, security tools and workflow. The idea is to provide customers with a soup-to-nuts, cloud-based productivity package. Mover helps customers get files from another service into the Microsoft 365 cloud.
As Jeff Tepper wrote in a post on the Official Microsoft Blog announcing the acquisition, this about helping customers get to the Microsoft cloud as quickly and smoothly as possible. âToday, Mover supports migration from over a dozen cloud service providers â including Box, Dropbox, Egnyte, and Google Drive â into OneDrive and SharePoint, enabling seamless file collaboration across Microsoft 365 apps and services, including the Office apps and Microsoft Teams,â Tepper wrote.
Tepper also points out that they will be gaining the expertise of the Mover team as it moves to Microsoft and helps add to the migration tools already in place.
Tony Byrne, founder and principal analyst at Real Story Group, says that moving files from one system to another like this can be extremely challenging regardless of how you do it, and the file transfer mechanism is only part of it. âThe transition to 365 from an on-prem system or competing cloud supplier is never a migration, per se. Itâs a rebuild, with a completely different UX, admin model, set of services, and operational assumptions all built into the Microsoft cloud offering,â Byrne explained.
Mover is based in Calgary, Canada. It was founded in 2012 and raised $1 million, according to Crunchbase data. It counts some big clients as customers including AutoDesk, Symantec and BuzzFeed.

Todayâs trial judges are not only encouraging courtroom technology but theyâre expecting it. Itâs become quite infrequent to find lawyers who are prosecuting or defending actions without the use of some sort of visual or audio technology to keep a juryâs attention and retention of information.
Why Do Jurors âExpect Some Sort of Technologyâ in a Courtroom?
Because this is how we live. Technology has changed the way we live in such fundamental ways that we are influenced and transformed by it every day. Think about it this wayâover two million smartphones are sold every day! The amount of information being shared by email, text message or social media is absolutely phenomenal. We live in a world where people can transfer messages in nanoseconds to loved ones around the world. We can pay bills, transfer funds, watch any type of television or sporting event from around the world, and send pictures with the touch of a screen. We live in a world of digital media, cloud computing, video conferencing and personal fitness evaluation on our wrists. Do we really expect juries to sit in a courtroom for days on end and listen to over-utilized complex verbal communication without some sort demonstrative evidence by technology? If so, be prepared for your tech-savvy jury members to nod off. In todayâs world, juries expect to be entertained. Keeping the attention of the finders of fact is absolutely paramount.
Different Types of Courtroom Technology
Depending on your technology comfort level, there are many tools available for lawyers to use in a courtroom, from simple software video presenters to trial presentation software.
PowerPoint
PowerPoint is a great option and can be extremely effective during your opening and closing statements. By now, even the most digitally unsophisticated lawyer knows how to use PowerPoint, or has someone nearby that can help. A simple presentation of medical terms, or of photos and documents admitted to evidence could be easily used to magnify and highlight the important points of your case that you intend to present. Try to not overuse PowerPoint and overload the jury with too much information, do not dilute your message with too many bullet points or let your slideshow water-down your oral persuasion.
The Elmo is Not Dead
The Elmo document camera has been used by trial lawyers for over 20 years. Despite most of our files and documents being paperless, itâs still handy (and necessary!) to have a good visual presenter like an Elmo at trial. For lawyers that are not overly confident in using trial presentation software, having an Elmo is still an extremely effective presentation tool to place documents and exhibits up on a screen in front of a jury while questioning witnesses.
Trial Presentation Software
In todayâs day and age, trial presentation software is quite limitless. When focusing on trial presentation software, itâs important to understand the basics of cloud computing. In 1996, Compaq computers started the buzz about cloud computing and how it was predicted that people would increasingly access software and files over the web. Today, this is becoming the basis of all digital usage. Cloud computing can be basically understood as the storage or hosting of your documents and files either on your servers or on servers belonging to a paid serviceâs network such as Dropbox or Microsoft SharePoint. Storage contents can then be synchronized to computers and/or mobile devices that are part of that particular cloud service.
With trial work, lawyers can quickly assemble documents, exhibits, transcripts, graphics, demonstrative evidence, etc. and upload the information directly into Dropbox or SharePoint, to then reproduce onto a screen via a projector or directly into the courtroomâs video input (if that exists in your area).
Trial presentation software, such as Sanction, Trialpad or Trial Director are well known for the storage, management, retrieval and display of documents, photos, images, etc. Trial Director is possibly the most well-recognized trial software program on the marketâalthough very expensive and you will likely need a second body in the courtroom to simply to run the program unless you are using the iPad version, which has an intuitive interface. I have used trial director for iPad during examinations of individual witnesses instead of using an Elmo â although always remember â courtroom technology can be terribly unpredictable. Trials are akin to being in a pressure cooker and the last thing you need is for your technology to fail during vital and critical moments. I would highly recommend to always keep the exhibits that you plan to use in paper copy, along with your Elmo handy in case your devices and software backfire. Always have a backup plan.
Courtroom Technology: Plan Ahead
Speaking of courtrooms, if youâre attending a trial out of town, always remember that some courtrooms have been properly renovated to meet the demands of demonstrative presentation (such as video displays mounted directly in the jury box that could display exhibits, demonstrative evidence, graphics video, etc) while some have not. Some courtrooms have pulldown screens available to use via projector, while other courtrooms are simply not equipped with anything. Itâs important to find out ahead of time whether or not the local jurisdiction youâre attending has technology enhanced courtrooms. Find out whether or not the courtroom has video displays, monitors, projector screens, a witness monitor, laptop connections, digital input connections, plugs in the right place, and wireless internet.
Attention and Retention
In the end, the most important thing is using the technology that youâre comfortable with. There are limitless possibilities, but remember, the goal is to keep the juryâs attention and keep them motivated. Donât get overwhelmed with the boundless options of software available to you as a trial lawyer. Use technology to not overemphasize or overwhelm a jury, but rather, use it to supplement and enhance your skilled presentation of evidence. Use it a little, use it a lotâbut if you use it, and the other side is not, you are already at a major advantage. Technology wonât make you a better lawyer, but it will help you increase your juryâs attention and retention from start to the end.

Try to not overuse PowerPoint and overload the jury with too much information, do not dilute your message with too many bullet points or let your slideshow water-down your oral persuasion.

Speaking of courtrooms, if youâre attending a trial out of town, always remember that some courtrooms have been properly renovated to meet the demands of demonstrative presentation (such as video displays mounted directly in the jury box that could display exhibits, demonstrative evidence, graphics video, etc) while some have not. Some courtrooms have pulldown screens available to use via projector, while other courtrooms are simply not equipped with anything. Sensemaking is a continuous cycle that we use at every stage of the HPF. Each stage will manifest its own insights.
As you engage in sensemaking, youâll find that itâs not a linear path, where you move from collecting data to sharing your knowledge. Instead, youâll move back and forth within the loop â collecting data, identifying patterns, sharing stories, and returning to collect more data.
Put another way, sensemaking isnât a destination, where you try to reach the end of the loop; itâs a continual process that ensures consistent learning and a fully developed understanding of your customers.
Letâs look at each component of the loop more closely.
Data Sources
Weâve talked about the various methods you can employ to validate your hypotheses. While most of the types of experiments weâve discussed have talking to customers at their heart, your customer and product development strategy should pull from multiple data sources.

You shouldnât spend too much time curating or organizing your shoebox. This should be a loose inventory of any data youâve collected â important or unimportant.
Evidence Files
When youâre on a customer or product development journey, youâre running an investigation. Your evidence file is like a case file: it contains the meaningful bits of data that comprise your point of view, vision, or strategy for your product.
An evidence file could include pictures of a customerâs environment, a direct customer quote, or any other type of signal that points to why you validated or invalidated your hypotheses. For example, you could begin to capture direct quotes from your customer interviews that highlight a particular motivation or problem you hypothesized might exist.
These evidence files should be constantly culled, organized, and reflected upon, as they are the foundation for the case youâre trying to make on behalf of your customer. They can help the team stay organized and up-to-date on the latest findings.
As you begin to curate your evidence files, youâll find yourself adding pieces of evidence that your gut tells you are meaningful but youâre not yet sure why. Your ability to clearly articulate the underlying meaning will evolve as the evidence file takes shape. Youâll find yourself continually moving things back and forth between your shoebox and evidence file until youâve refined your collection to its most impactful bits of data for the social media packages.
When starting your project, you may find that all the data youâve collected feels meaningful, and thatâs okay. As your project matures, youâll need a way to reduce your data signals and separate the âwheat from the chaff.â What you believe to be most meaningful will evolve over time, and so should your evidence file.
Schemas
Schematizing data is the process of applying categories and patterns to your data. We often refer to this as âtagging your data,â giving it meaning and defining it.
For example, you may mark a quote with a âproblemâ tag when a customer expresses a frustration. This will help you look at all your interviews and identify each time a frustration was articulated.
These tags will help you see patterns in your data and begin to draw conclusions.
Again, the parameters within the HPF automatically get you started. If your hypotheses and Discussion Guides are formulated to capture parameters like job-to-be-done, problem, or motivation, it can be much easier to begin tagging your data using those parameters.
Weâve repeatedly seen teams create spreadsheets to connect the data theyâve collected to their hypotheses. Some spreadsheets are quite simple, tracking the status of hypotheses. Others are more elaborate, containing dashboard-like interfaces with counters and formatting that change the status of a hypothesis from green to red based on the number of times it has been validated or invalidated.
Weâve also seen teams create hypotheses backlogs that help them track the various hypotheses the team might be exploring (and remember others they stopped exploring).
Stories
There are two things you need to get others onboard with your vision:
A compelling story
A way to share it
The most important thing about sensemaking is that it helps you share meaning, not data. Data is important, but emotion and empathy are what compel others to action.
As you begin to identify patterns, youâll need ways to express your data so that people can easily understand it. Visual elements like charts, graphs, and models can be a powerful way to help others understand what youâve learned.
You can certainly take the quantitative data youâve collected and transfer it into pie charts or line graphs, but you should look for more illustrative models as well. For example, you may have identified that there is a tension between customers wanting quality service providers and saving money. Perhaps this tension changes, depending on the type of service the customer is looking for. A customer might be looking to save money when researching lawn care service, but willing to pay much more for quality childcare.
Illustrating these nuances in graphical models can help others easily understand relationships and connections in your data.
Analogies and metaphors are also powerful tools to help convey complex ideas to others. Look for opportunities where your findings parallel other situations that might be more familiar and accessible to them. For example, one of our teams identified parallels between people trying to learn a new programming language and people learning to swim. This comparison helped the rest of the organization empathize with how difficult the challenges were without requiring knowledge about the programming language.
Once you have a compelling story, you need a way to share it with others in your organization. Youâll want to create a continuous communication channel (or multiple channels) thatâs easy to use and accessible to everyone. Weâve found the less formal and lightweight the communication channel is, the more likely people are to use it. Leverage existing channels like email or chat clients so you donât have to encourage your organization to use another channel they can easily ignore.
Throughout the stages in the HPF, you should fall into a pattern of continual sensemaking; these activities should be happening, in parallel, with your customer and product development. You can do this by splitting the teamsâ efforts or scheduling a day each week, during development, to stop and make sense of the data youâve been collecting.
Over time, the continual pattern of the sensemaking loop will increase your understanding and the overall empathy of your organization toward its customers.
At this point, weâve covered the three phases of the Customer-Driven Cadence: Formulating, Experimenting, and Sensemaking, through this social media essay.
