Cadillac Records -  modern Melisma spoils yet another music history film

Thought the trailer for this one looked interesting when we saw it earlier this year, so when it hit DVD, put it on the Netflix queue. Somewhat interesting look at the early days of Chess Records. Was impressed with several of the male performers, but was less so with Beyonce Knowles take on Etta James. Her modern day singing style should have been left at the door and maybe a little more studying of the source material might have been more appropriate. Thought Mos Def made a great Chuck Berry, and Jeffrey Wright and Eamonn Walker were both effective as Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf respectively.

J'ai, ce matin et selon mon appréciation des choses, été victime d'un accident de travail.

En effet, je me suis coupé sous l'ongle du pouce, en ouvrant le blister du vinyle des Jazz Messengers que je viens de recevoir. J'ai bien dit en dessous. Ca pique, véritablement (non pas comme l’agaçante litote en vogue qui, dans la bouche de tous et toutes en ce moment, signifie vaguement « désagréable », « difficile ».), et ce type de blessure n'est pas courant, s'avère exclusivement lié à ceux qui ouvrent des pochettes de 33T. Soit peu, malgré ce qu'on tente de nous fallacieusement faire croire à propos du regain du support.

Un accident du travail donc, avec un disque de jazz. Pas banal et d'augure modérée pour un type comme moi qui devait longtemps penser pis que pendre du genre et qui dernièrement, s'éveille, se réveille.

C'est le Jazz Messengers qui m'a attaqué le pouce mais ça aurait tout aussi pu bien être un Miles Davis (Sketches of Spain ou In a Silent Way), un Monk (Brilliant Corners), un Adderley (Somethin' Else) ou un Coltrane (Giant Steps ou Blue Train) puisque ce n'est pas moins de – alors que je n'ai pas la queue d'un pour me les raisonnablement offrir – sept vinyles que je me suis payé ce jour (huit si on y ajoute le Howlin' Wolf pour lequel j'ai également essoré ma bourse).

Une bouffée jazz, une pulsion, une crise.

Commandés par web, j'ai nourri une certaine culpabilité, un presque remords, à les attendre dans ma boîte aux lettres (où ils ne rentraient bien sûr pas).

D'autant que sur ces entrefaites j'avais replongé de manière toute hypnotique (et donc farouchement exclusive) dans les alternatives 90's, en me repassant du Grandaddy, du Eels, du PJ Harvey, de l'Elliott Smith, du Belle & Sebastian et du Beck... qui n'avaient que peu à voir, donc, avec le bop ou le modal.

Mais une fois les pochettes 30 par 30 entre les mains, l'émotion ressentie lors du click de paiement est au rendez-vous, décuplée parfois même (les Coltrane et les Davis, j'en tremblais presque – la cover du Monk, recadrée est plutôt décevante (l'originale n'était déjà pas bien folichonne)... mais la galette est de couleur).

De son côté Carole a reçu les trois coffrets INA que nous avions chopés à peu cher sur vente-privée, concernant les adaptations ORTFiennes d'Henry James (par Chabrol, Enrico et d'autres) ainsi que les émissions Discorama, Les Femmes Aussi... (un super film de William Klein avec Simone Signoret interrogeant les « femmes des grands magasins ») et Dim Dam Dom. Du haut niveau de téloche, les aminches.

Achève enfin ma lecture du Graduate de Charles Webb, dont certaines pages me font littéralement trembler – plus que le film le fit je crois – tant elles résonnent en moi. Je suis attrapé. Je ne pensais pas que ce texte aurait un tel écho en moi (le désenchantement, le droit à l'oisiveté, l'hystérie et l'indécision, la lâcheté zébrée d'opiniâtreté, l'inconséquence, l'appel de la route, … sont autant de thèmes qui me touchent).

Je reverrai bientôt le film afin de voir si tout y était déjà ou s'il n'était finalement qu'un machin opportuniste et proto-bobo, survendu grâce à une BO aux petits oignons.

Ce que je revois en revanche, c'est l’exécrable Colline a des Yeux 2. Indigent, laborieux, anachronique et bassement opportuniste, poussif et pusillanime, ce film est authentiquement indigne de Craven (qui n'a pourtant pas signé que des choses recommandables) et fait de la peine tout au long de son visionnage tant on n'y trouvera rien, nothing, nada, pour le sauver.
