We continue our salute to Black Music Month and focus on the genre of reggae music, a musical style that is dear to my heart and that I've had the pleasure of collecting and playing in clubs and on the radio for close to 40 years. I chose the above picture of Augustus Pablo, not because he made the playlist tonight, he didn't, but because we play a couple tracks from one of his collaborators and mentors, Herman Chin Loy. I had the privilege of seeing Augustus live in the late 80's, and it was a magical experience. Anyhow, roots reggae is the dominant style featured on the episode, with a smattering of ska and rocksteady in the mix as well. Hope it hits and you feel all right..

This week's episode is partially a redux of our first episode of 2023, with a first half tribute to two of the best American songwriters to ever put pen to paper, and who coincidentally both left this mortal coil on January 1, 1953 and 1997 respectively. And because we are huge fans of classic Country & Western, it made sense to fill out the rest of the episode with some of our faves from that genre. Happy New Year everyone, let's make it a good one shall we?

We have reached the end of the month of June and our spotlight series on Black Music genres. We wrap things up with a mix of foundational hip-hop tracks, culled from two compilations on the Soul Jazz label called Boombox. These tracks are funky, and still sound fresh and groundbreaking some 50 years on. We couldn't resist dropping a couple of stone cold classics into the mix as well, this was a fun episode to create. Hope that comes across!

We are once again planning to spotlight various black musical genres during the month of June, as it is Black Music Month! We kick it off with a recently released collection of live Sonny Rollins recordings from his 1959 European tour of Sweden, Netherlands and France. We close out Side A with a live track from the Jazz at the Philharmonic collection, featuring Ella Fitzgerald, Charlie Parker and Buddy Rich! On Side B, we dig into some "party jazz" from a collection of such that came out many years ago on 32Jazz, a Joel Dorn imprint. We also couldn't resist playing a very funky Grant Green track from a Blue Note "Lost Grooves" sampler. So not a shabby way to get this special month going we think, what say you?

No programs for the next couple weeks as we mourn the passing of my mother Jane Kingman McDonough. She was one of a kind, with no lack of opinions on most things including music, for which we shared a deep appreciation. She always supported our efforts at creating memorable radio, and we will dearly miss our conversations. Rest easy Mom, enjoy the voyage.

Tonight's episode is a bit messy, but overall I think it holds together pretty well. We kick things off with several tracks from Superchunk's latest collection of odds and sods, called Misfits and Mistakes, where the many single tracks and b-sides they've recorded in the last 20 years have been gathered. Then we round out the Side A with a few other items from the archives. Then on Side B, we feature tracks from Bloodshot Records and others. All in all, a nifty package of music that's sure to please the ears! And only available at RadioRadioX.com , Thursdays 7pm.
