Clean system. If you separate the loops in the system you avoid shifting biners when having multiple biners in the anchor. Nice, clean, organized and easy to work with. Avoid leaving a loop without any biner in though! “We seemed to breathe more freely, a lighter air, an air of adventure.”Ernesto Che Guevara- The Motorcycle Diaries

Four AM our alarms went off, accompanied by the crowing of the eager roof rooster. I forced myself into the ice cold shower, and at 4:20 we began our walk through the town with a small group of travelers ready to hit the trail.
At 5 AM they opened the gates and it was a rat race to get to check-in. Unprepared, I fumbled for my passport and entry ticket.  You are required to have a passport for entry to the ruins, and to dress culturally appropriate. You are not allowed to wear national attire from another country, out of respect for the indigenous culture.  I wore breathable knee-length pants, a tank top, and non-slip sneakers.  It is not necessary to wear hiking boots; the trail is fairly cleared and dressed with stone steps, but some sort of athletic shoes are recommended. You will sweat on this hike, so dress appropriately, and always prepare for rain.  I brought my daypack with sufficient water, a couple snacks, sunscreen, bug spray, my raincoat and a fleece (it is cooler up at the top).
After checking in, I started my way up the stone stairway.  My personal goal was to make it to the top before the sunrise; I wanted a picture of that!  Unfortunately, that was the goal of many hikers, so it was a quick pace out of the gates for everyone.
I started up the trail, fumbling around in the dark, only to realize that this mountain was about 5 times the climb I thought it was!  I did not do much research on this climb before we arrived.  However, that was what made it great! I did not have any preconceptions or even any photos of what the view would be like.  I was just walking into the dark to something spectacular!

Somewhere along the way I got separated from my travel buddies. It was dark and it was hard to get oriented amongst the heavy wheezing and dizzyness that came along with hiking at altitude. However, I pushed on alone, stopping for water breaks when needed.  Eventually I cleared the dense jungle tree-line and was able to see out at the valley. Boy was it worth it! The view was spectacular! I definitely took some time to rest and just look out at the vast jungle and extreme height and depths of the Andes.  It was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.

About one hour into the hike I finally made it to the top.  It was a sigh of relief, and a feeling of extreme accomplishment that I climbed 2,000 feet vertically to the site of the Incan city that holds a place on my bucket list!
I waited for my travel buddies, while the line was growing quickly from the loads of busses rolling in. While resting, I caught a glimpse of an adventurous stray dog that followed us from our hostel that morning.

Note: Upon arrival at the top, make sure to get your passport stamp from this historic site.  If you are interested in the story behind the ruins, you can sign up for a tour.  If you are climbing Huayna Picchu or Montana, make sure to arrive at your meeting place ASAP.  Those climbs are a first-come-first-serve basis and only allow so many hikers in a day.  Unfortunately, I regret not doing those other climbs.  I saw pictures from my fellow travelers I wish I would have gone! Next time I will climb the mountain!
Tumblr media
I spent a couple hours viewing the site and taking so many pictures. They were not able to fully capture the magnificence that is the Andes. This is definitely an amazing personal accomplishment, and it is an experience I will never forget!
Descent: You will hike down the same path that you came up.  You are able to take the bus on the way down, but I decided to hike it.  You'll find it works a whole different set of leg muscles to walk down 2,000 ft!  Once at the bottom and on your short walk back to town, make sure to take a refreshing swim in the Urubamba river.  There are some amazing giant boulders that you can rest on and listen to the rushing water below.  Enjoy the night with a cold cerveza; you earned it!

Simple way to explain masterpoint. Learn the climbing tips. Repost: @nikki_hammarstrom Masterpoint. Have you ever struggled to make a masterpoint and keep the equalization? . Here is a really basic video of a simple method to tie the masterpoint using a figure of eight. With this method you keep the equalization exactly where you want it. Keep the pressure with your left hand and tie the knot with the other hand. . . #Himalayadestination #climbers #climbersofinstagram #climbergirls #climbingtips #anchoroftheday #climbinganchors #knotoftheday #climbing_videos_of_instagram #rockclimbinglessons #climbinglessons #howto #howtorockclimb #howtoclimb #seekqualifiedinstructions #techtip #masterpoint #climbingtips #climbinggears #weighmyrack #climbingnation #trainingforclimbing #instaclimb #doyouclimb #climbinginstructor #climbingnation #outdoorclimbing #rockclimbinglife #climbingday #climbon  https://www.instagram.com/p/CEinO4upeIF/?igshid=1cfwv2s25wey0
