Getting out of oneself is the fastest road to happiness. Depression is frequently a form of self-obsession and the only way to break out of it is to focus on someone other than oneself. Even when it’s an imbalance in brain chemistry, this can help until you can get yourself back into balance. This is not, however, a substitute for good medical care.
Do at least three charitable acts a week (work up to it if you have to). They don’t have to be terribly time consuming, although you will get more out of them the more time you spend doing them. The moment you catch yourself being depressed, go find someone else to help out.
Pick up litter. Help out the elderly in your neighborhood. Call your aunt just to see how she’s doing. Volunteer for a local charity, even if it’s just an hour a week. If you know someone else is feeling poorly, ask them how they are and just listen, saying nothing about yourself. Offer someone a ride. If you don’t know what to do, just start asking people if there’s anything you can do to help out.
