I discovered the Humla open-source keyboard a while back, ordered PCBs, and kinda fell in love with it. It’s become my preferred on-the-go keyboard, and I now use it a lot with an iPad Mini for writing. It has a 36-key layout similar to a 5-column Corne or a Minidox or Gergoplex, so it’s basically what I’ve been using on my desktop but with a compact unibody design.

Since it has the option to add Bluetooth functionality (by adding a battery and power switch, and replacing the microcontroller with a Bluetooth one) and I was mainly using it with an iPad, I wanted to go ahead and do that. The big thing getting in the way is that to do Bluetooth with a DIY mechanical keyboard, you generally need to use the ZMK firmware package (instead of QMK, which is the most widely used one for wired keyboards).

From what I’ve seen, ZMK is well-made, but it does certain things very differently. The big one is that where QMK defaults to having you set up a command-line interface that can then compile firmware locally, the preferred way to compile ZMK firmware involves setting up a GitHub repository that’s connected to ZMK, which then automatically compiles and puts the firmware file in the Actions tab every time you update it. If you want to compile firmware for a different firmware, you can add it to the build.yaml file and it’ll do its thing.

It took me a while to get that working, and I now have my ZMK firmware profile up on GitHub. With that it was just a tiny bit of extra soldering, and now my Humla is Bluetooth and the little messenger bag I keep that stuff in is a bit lighter without all the cables in it.

I spent way too much time working on keyboards over the weekend. I finished two Sofles, a pair of Dogtag macropads (so I can connect them with a TRRS cable), and a Humla.

Had to put down my old rabbit (she was eleven) because she got very bad very quickly and I couldn't find a vet to come out so it became an emergency and thankfully I found someone that could shoot her. Also the last thing she did was pee all over me so that was fair

And I just. I don't want to make it about me and maybe it just hasn't settled in properly but I wish I could, like, feel. I wish I was a crier and could bawl and heal instead of just, like, I don't know. Cry maybe one tear, instinctively suppress it all and be so nonchalant about it. I recognize that I am always like this and I understand that I seem coldhearted, hell that's the definition of being cold hearted. People are prepared to comfort me and then there's nothing to comfort. And I do love this bunny, I really wanted her to have it good. I'm glad I got to spend such a long time with her, like, cognatively. So can't I recognise my feelings or am I really so apathetic towards everything? And if so, what's even the point? Do I need to be spoonfed emotions through storytelling to feel them? Like willingly watching the shadowplay instead of leaving the cave because it feels more rewarding than taking part?

Maybe it's just part of getting older. Maybe just something everyone feels because our lives feel devoid of meaning in a modern society and fast paced news and social media turns us numb to tragedy and happiness in equal measure. (Plato sure didn't foresee me 2000 years into the future making his allegory about knowing too much, actually)
