my biggest beef with the reboot is one single sole thing. and that is that compared to the original, it’s fucking tone deaf
i mean. the reboot is entertaining to watch and i feel like i’m getting stuff out of every episode which is... good, but the reason i sat through 200 episodes of the original vanguard anime was because when it breached its themes of healing, of friendship and of overcoming hardships it was so incredibly down to earth
Aichi’s backstory as a kid who’s been bullied his whole life isn’t just treated as a throw away tear-jerker backstory like it is in most anime lol, it’s actually something that’s very integral to almost every aspect of his character, to every stage of character development he has, and it doesn’t take him one arc, or two arcs, to shake it off and recover. 100 episodes in they use his transition from middle school to high school as way to highlight how LITTLE that’s actually changed, how much he still struggles but that he’s trying. during the psyqualia arc we see how desperate he is for acknowledgement and for positive attention, and how he ends up striving for it in ways that backfires on him, wears him down and hurts him. which is something kids like him tend to actually do! because they are very vulnerable, and they are desperate for validation.
Aichi never has to face the people who bullied him and forgive them or whatever, instead we get stuff like.... Naoki admitting that he considers himself just as guilty as the people who bullied Aichi because he didn’t stand up for him when he had the chance. And that’s.... really important, and honestly the only genuinely good+realistic take on bullying I’ve seen in a shounen. these sort of shows instead seem to push the responsibility onto the individual to just like “get better” or to simply conform. instead, Aichi grows up to be very much himself, which is p huge since he was always a feminine and “girly” boy and that was why he was bullied in the first place.
meanwhile in the reboot Aichi is an all-forgiving superhuman who forgives the dude who beat him up so bad he could barely walk and stole his stuff in the first episode only 5 episodes later, holds no grudges, takes like 3 episodes to bounce back after a life of bullying.
amazing, how badly can you miss the fucking point !

the most astonishing thing about cardfight!! vanguard g next was that sugita tomokazu was in it
casted as the magical alien space wizard with the all seeing-eye overseeing the spiritual exchanges between earth and extraterrestrial life, appearing only for ONE episode of plot exposition and then never again

I STILL HAVE TO WATCH THE EPILOGUE EPISODE BUT THE PARTS THAT OFFICIALLY KILLED ME WERE
-the way Chrono took both Shion and Tokoha's hands at the very end when they were going home
-the special ending that just shows scenic shots from around Asakusa, all the familiar spots we've seen over the series, as the space debris from cray creates a beautiful meteor shower
-BABY

After that exchange with Mamoru and totally thinking he was being flirted with only to be turned down, Ibuki went home and ate an entire tub of ice cream and cried himself to sleep because he's a dateless turbovirgin who's never even held hands

I do like a lot how when he apologizes here Chrono does get to say ごめんな because, like, how do I explain this but like he has his roughboy mannerisms but he's like flexible beyond that which adds a lot of character and in general I just like it when characters in anime or whatever sound like they talk a bit more like.... real people ya know

I just really didn't think Kazuma was capable of that, not in the sense that he doesn't see Chrono as a friend, I just didn't think that he, as a person, had the emotional capacity, like,
this is the kid who reunited with his step brother who meant the world to him but is too awkward to settle for a way to call him so he just says "him" or "that guy"
