Gintama Chapter 659 Review
youtube
Okay...what Yorozuya can do now? Is this series really ending Evangelion style? Why Sorachi has to be smart in his writing? This chapter is perhaps the most brutal display of action of the arc so far, which says a lot believe it or not, but it also has the intensity that continues to challenge my expectation.
Honestly, I don’t know where this is heading to and I love it. It’s not doing the tried and true formula of receiving the key to win; instead, it continues to have our mind circulating on how the final arc would end. It’s crazy because I was so sure that this would be it, but Sorachi got us like fools, reminding us that there’s a reason why it wasn’t that simple to begin with.
In case you didn’t get what Gintoki was saying in the last chapter, Sadaharu is in fact alive and I couldn’t be any gladder to be restated. It’s welcoming to see Shinpachi and Kagura’s reaction towards it. They don’t have to feel like they lost, similar to the past. The dog is a hell of a fighter.
I was happy to see Utsuro actually lost his smile when learning about Sadaharu managed to outsmarted him and able to regress the Altana. Sadaharu’s plan is to use himself in the headstream of the dragon veins and lower its power. The bad news is that it’s only lowering the power, not removing it entirely. In other words, Sadaharu can still die if he stays there for too long. Dammit, Sorachi, leave us alone!
I got to say and it’s been said many times, Utsuro got ways with words that really can stab your gut and twist it. It’s much needed for the final credible villain. How he provokes Gintoki is savage as hell; placing the guilt all on him for Sadaharu’s potential death. He either stays long enough to burn out, or Utsuro will kill him; talk about lose-lose situation.
Something about one small line from Gintoki can really leave a powerful punch. I’m referring to “I don’t wanna hear you talk about family.” Not only I got chills from that panel alone, but the fact he said it to Utsuro couldn’t fit any more perfect. From a guy who is in a body of Shouyou, that has to be the worst taunt yet.
If that wasn’t enough, it transitions to probably the best use of dialogues with the premise of hand-holding. Yorozuya isn’t a family; they’re not blood related and born in different places. They’re not connected whatsoever, yet they are together in one area; that alone is the reason why they won’t let their hands go. That was beautifully said as well as its paneling. The preparation for a major brawl got me blood pumping. I roared with hype!
The action is intense as hell and I think it’s the bloodiest scene of the arc so far. The beat down start-up with Yorozuya was awesome. I love to watch those guys kicking asses as one. They don’t need “final hope,” they just want their dog back. Seriously, the action is pretty damn brutal. Every panels you either seeing limbs flying or blood gushing out. It’s as if Mad House Anime Studio took over for the fountain of blood use.
Utsuro’s entry was pretty badass I have to admit, but damn, I seriously want to see him get his ass kicked really badly. First, he continues to taunt Gintoki that his path always leads to suffering in which regards to Sadaharu enduring all the pain while others are trying to protect him. That Bokuto toss was pretty sick. I love how Sorachi keeps on bringing new ideas of choreograph.
The sword slice sneak attack was freaking insane; almost forgot I’m reading Shounen. Utsuro has no remorse to his own clan; he smiles away with joy on his face. Hitsugi then joins in and by then, the battle was about to get a lot worse. After Utsuro shares his enlightenment, it’s time for Gintoki to share his.
This chapter got some great comeback and one-liner lines. Utsuro tries to act like a tyrant by insisting humans to die. Gintoki makes an agreement with him since he likes the idea; after all, Utsuro and his men are only humans as well. That collapse scene with more blood was epic. Hitsugi got screwed over bad since he lost his arm and the injury remains. Gintoki actually used it on him earlier to cut his arm and play an act that he used something else. Beautiful!
The moment when Gintoki stabs Utsuro’s eye with his crystal sword should be celebrated. Unfortunately, the plot point has been stated a long time ago: Utsuro can’t be defeated in his home world. The sword could have been the end all be all, but because they’re back at Earth, where he gathers all the altana to remain immortal, it is only a sword. Dammit! I should have thought of this, but it bypasses me because of how reassuring it was to get the key to win.
To make matter even worse, Utsuro breaks the sword and slams Gintoki like a scrub. I didn’t expect the sword to break this soon, but this makes the challenge even more difficult than ever. I honestly don’t know how he will be defeated now, and yet it’s exciting. It’s hard to predict, so the anticipation is greater this way. It’s worth noting that the chapter reminded that people at space can go back to Earth, so now they’re most needed.
The dialogues are great. Once again, these lines keep packing up strong punch. When it comes to action, it’s simply gruesome, especially if you’re bloodthirsty. It’s intense and exhilarating. There are plenty of badass moments from multiple characters, including Utsuro. That stab to the eye was crazy in more ways than one. Not only it looked brutal, but the way he smiles with a sword in his socket is bone-chilling.
The chapter is intense as war can get. Yorozuya versus Naraku is a hell of a rush and we are only getting started. It opens with many new possibilities with the key to victory completely disposed. The wait is killing me.

Gintama manga chap 631
Dear Gintama gods and Sorachi-sama,
That Takasugi sure knows how to make an entrance! Even though I’ve been waiting for him to return, was certain he would return, I was still surprised by his reappearance. As soon as Zura heard Takasugi’s voice—which reminded me of that scene in Hannibal when Hannibal first called Clarice on the phone—I literally jumped up and cheered. Honestly, Sorachi-sama, I sometimes wonder if maybe you’re a TakaZura fanboy at heart. It’s adorable how you even had them wearing their old Joui uniforms like a matching couple. How fitting that the two of them would keep their old uniforms around; out of the four Joui boys, they’re the ones who have always retained the strongest spiritual bond to the past. The only difference is while the ghosts of the past have motivated Zura to continue fighting for the future, Takasugi has been driven to destroy the future as the result of them.
Though honestly, despite his promise to be the only one to destroy Earth, I firmly believe the Takasugi we’re seeing now is the softer, kinder version of the one we’ve lived with up until now. Obviously his face-off with Gintoki provided the first cathartic moment for him; his subsequent coma, reconciliation with his old comrades, and then learning the truth behind Utsuro had to have melted his icy, destructive core completely. Ever since the start of this battle, as I watched the hordes of Liberation Army descend upon Edo, I kept on thinking how our four beloved Joui generals should be the ones leading the charge to beat back the Amanto enemies and defeat them. Now that Takasugi is back in the fold, I hope my wish to see that scenario happen will still be granted after all. I would love it so much if Gintoki were to lead the Shinsengumi and yakuza factions, Takasugi the Oniwabanshuu and Yoshiwara factions (I have my personal logic for this one; and I promise none of it has to do with any shipping or anti-shipping reasons), Zura the okama, cabaret, and host factions, while Sakamoto maintains the space assault (gods know Hata the Baka, the old man, and Madao are freaking useless at that).
Lest you think I forgot, I know the return of Takasugi also means we will be seeing Oboro again as well. With Utsuro suddenly making a cameo at the edge of town, I know you are probably trying to signify that the final showdown between former master and his five students is approaching. As soon as the Lib Army and Prince Gun Smoke are put down, I know the epic battle between the monsters will finally take place. Naturally that fills me with no small amount of dread, thinking of the deep dark void that may follow afterward. I can only beg you to please draw out the battle with the Yato and the rest of the Lib army for just a little longer. Kamui needs to come back too. For once the stupid big brother should side with his little sister and fight with her. Maybe Papi and his cannon arms can also make an appearance. I would imagine that it would only be appropriate for the Yatos to be the ones to effectively take on their own; how can mere mortals who are not blessed with Gintoki’s super quick-healing, non-dying powers ever be a real match otherwise? The fact that the Lib Army Yatos are abusive to the elderly and rather sneaky makes their defeat all the more deserved.
Once the dust has settled on Earth and prior to the final big showdown against Utsuro, I really hope you will give us a proper time out so that important conversations between friends and loved ones can be had, in order to allow some proper reconnection between old fighting buddies, including the never present Kurono. Before the fat lady sings, can we please see the 5th Joui member? I always thought he was within Elizabeth, but now that that theory is dashed thanks to Dragonia, I am at a lost as to who he could be. Unless Kurono and Dragonia are one and the same? Is that even possible? Anyway, I just hope you haven’t forgotten about him or decided to simply ignore his existence altogether as it was only for comedic effect to begin with.
Lastly, I especially hope we get to see some genuine conversations take place between certain duos in order to tie up any relationship loose ends. I won’t annoy you further by specifying which particular conversations I hope to see the most; by now, you already know full well my inclinations, especially my top three.  I only ask that some degree of acknowledgement occurs. Actually, for one of the pairings, I really think it’s entirely reasonable for full acknowledgement to take place: hasn’t the poor scarred gorilla earned it by now? For the second pair they might be too young yet, so maybe some harmless flirting would suffice. While for the third, the OTP love of my life, I know I might as well ask for the moon, BUT, you have constantly surprised me with how obliging you are with regards to them, so I will continue to hope for the best. Or, at the very least, as I’ve mentioned countless times before, if you just keep the door open and not kill my dreams, I would be more than satisfied. Think: Akira and Hikaru at the end of Hikaru no Go. That would be more than enough for me.
Yours truly,
A silly fangirl with yaoi dreams
(^3^)
PS: Thank you for letting them be in the same frame! Tiny morsels like this is all I need to be full!

PSS:  I literally felt a delicious chill run down my spine when I saw this, so for that, I thank you. Really got the Hannibal/Clarice vibes.
