i’ve been having thougts over exactly how mooch gets drafted since i took a shower this morning. (and yes this is getting typed out on my notes app)

quinn is sososo supportive of his little sister. and part of his support is taking control of the tv in the locker room (if there’s not one in there, let’s pretend). one day, after morning skate, he turns on her game. and about that time the canucks gm comes in (i can’t think of his name atm). he sees the game on, but doesn’t take notice that it’s the women. he’s paying attention, and all of a sudden a “speed demon” flies across the ice and scores (spoilers: it’s mooch). he’s instantly like “who’s that?”. quinn perks up, “my sister!” and rambles off her stats (like he did with luke in that interview question). and he kind of deflated, and leaves the topic alone. and then he sees the osu men’s team playing and… she’s there again? (in my head, if mooch were real, she’d probably have to play with osu men before canucks are like “a woman can play too”, yk?) and now he’s thinking… what if they got the female hughes? and so he starts talking with the front office, and the signing people, draft personnel, etc. they start scrounging the rule book to make sure there’s nothing that explicitly says “no girls allowed”. there’s not. and so now they’re sending “scouts” osu games, even though they know their target (mooch). speculation starts flying, but surprise, they never think it’s mooch (because gender discrimination and all that jazz).

we’ve already touched on quinn being the one to announce her name at the draft, but i firmly believe mooch had little to no clue, and neither did quinn. only ones aware are ellen, jim, jack, luke, and tyler (maybe the entire devils roster as well because jack can’t keep a secret to save his life). mooch just thinks she’s there because quinn is “having his big moment”. ellen is slyly insisting “you still wanna look good, you know we’ll probably be shown at some point”.

quinn’s walking up to the podium (i think we said she goes #6 overall?), and he gets to the center. the ones that know, are all holding their breath. (osu is having a watch party because the coach’s are like “just wait for it”) l. he says the spiel, and kinda trails off- “and with the #6 overall pick of the nhl entry draft, the vancouver canucks select…. “ and he kind of tears up, looks down to collect himself, looks back up “mooch”. her jaw is on the floor. osu watch party is going fucking insane. quinn is in literal tears. broadcasters are baffled (because that’s not who they thought they’d pick at all). mooch doesn’t get up for a second, and luke and jack have to reach over and be like “that’s you baby sister, have your fucking moment” and she calmly walks up, until she gets in front of quinn, and she absolutely tackles him. they’re both crying on stage. their sibling moment is plastered freaking every where.

it’s such a shock because everyone knew that she’s a hughes but no girl has been thought to be able to compete with guys at the nhl level. and mooch just went 6th overall. and no one thought she would get picked this high, she wasn’t even on the expected top ten draft picks.

27  - 6TH MARCH, PISCES  OCCUPATION/STUDYING: it’s your choice SEXUALITY: asexual   lilianna is the oldest of the harwood siblings and she’s that cool older sibling that the other sisters so desperately wanted to be. she’s the trend-setter of the family and it’s pretty clear to see that taylor, posie, nate and evie have adopted personality traits of hers. she spent her teen years having to fight them off and lock her door to stop them from pestering her.  other than being witty and sarcastic, lilianna was born an over-achiever. she was the only one out of her siblings to attend a private school outside of the springs because she got the grade for a good scholarship. she then set her sights on cambridge for university to study medicine. nobody knows why, but she would put insane amounts of pressure on herself to be a good role-model for the others and was almost like a third parent.  in her second year at cambridge, she eventually burnt out and her mental health broke down. she couldn’t help but feel like she’d spent her early and mid-twenties working, stressing and over-achieving and she missed out on all of the messiness that comes with it.  a secret of hers is that despite being open about her sexuality since she was around 18, she’s never had a boyfriend or girlfriend. it’s just never happened for her and now she’s seeing her younger siblings date, she’s starting to feel pressured to find somebody. however, she feels like in such a sex-positive generation, it’ll be hard for her to find somebody who accepts her for who she is. she still lives at home by choice and nate’s parents are eager to normalise that young adults/twenty-somethings CAN still live at home. with lilianna’s anxiety still pretty rocky, they’d prefer it that way anyway.

TAYLOR HARWOOD

if lilianna is the cool, trend-setting older sister then taylor is the *spice* in the family that her other siblings could sometimes do without. it shouldn’t be mistaken; ALL of the harwood siblings love each other and they’re probably as close as families come, but from the moment she was born, taylor had it clear that she was the star. think kim kardashian vs. her sisters; she’s the stand-out and loves to have all eyes on her. she’d be the one signing up for her school’s productions, forcing the others to put on shows for their parents and constantly stealing lilianna’s clothes to sneak out of the house in.  taylor was in stage school from a very young age and during her first year in high school, her mother agreed to fly out to los angeles with her and her agent to audition for different productions; this is where she landed vicotrious. everybody was excited for her and taylor was sure she’d got her big break. as everybody knows, victorious was a huge success and she became a household name at a very young age.  taylor dropped out of school and was schooled on set while she worked. their mother spent most of her time in los angeles while the other siblings stayed home with their dad. in what would have been taylor’s last year of high school, victrious was cancelled and ended. since then, it’s been a struggle to get any work and she eventually moved back home. this was a hard transition for taylor. she felt as if she was washed up at 18 and had no idea what she wanted to do with her life. she went back to school for her final year but was severely bullied by jealous girls and people who were eager to see her downfall from the start. one girl even rewarded her the “biggest has-been” award which completely humiliated her at her graduation after party. unlike lilianna though, rather than retreating and taking some time for herself, she threw herself into more smaller projects. she has a determination to make it and when she got into st judes, it felt like a new chapter for her. she’s already moved out and has her own apartment downtown but happily comes home to see her siblings as much as she can. her life’s goal is to make sure that nobody ever forgets taylor harwood.

POSIE HARWOOD 

25 - 5th AUGUST, LEO  OCCUPTATION: model SEXUALITY: heterosexual 

posie was named after her grandmother; josephine ‘posie’ harwood. compared to her other siblings - nate included - she’s always been more laidback. her parents (and lilianna) more or less dragged her through school kicking and screaming. she rarely had motivation to do anything and just wanted an easy life. more or less the complete opposite of lilianna and taylor.  since posie grew up under two huge personalities with big ambitions, she definitely got to fly under the radar a lot and neglected typical responsibilities you have to remember when you grow up. for example, she got away with dropping ice-skating when all of her siblings were made to stay in extra curricular activities, her grades were never as good as her sisters and all in all, she wore the ‘family disappointment’ badge with pride. she’s quite content with riding their coat-tails for as long as she can.  although lazy, posie is also extremely social and loves meeting people and having fun. she had the most typical teenage years with fake i.d.’s, a string of good for nothing boyfriend’s and riding on temporary highs. her siblings know her as soft and loving, but to people outside the family, she definitely has the label of being the more argumentative one.  when taylor was being picked on in school, it was posie who put things to rest by punching the girl in the face. when a boy broke evie’s heart, it’d be posie to serve him revenge. on top of that, she’s aware that she’s beautiful and her favourite thing to do is string people along, get what she needs from them and then move on to the next best thing.

EVELYN ‘EVIE’ HARWOOD  TW: GROOMING

18 - JANUARY 4TH, CAPRICORN  OCCUPATION: you pick.  SEXUALITY: you pick.

evie is the youngest of the family and adores every single one of her siblings, although by default she’s probably closest to posie and nate. like most little sisters, she’s got a bit of each sibling in her.  but alongside this, she’s also struggled to find her own identity and would often cling to the others in order to feel included and like she had direction in life. evie struggles with dyslexia - a common learning disability - and never found school easy. she’d always had tutoring and that was ramped up when it came to her exams. all of her siblings also pitched in to help her; lillianna with science, posie with english and nate with maths...taylor was a little too busy, but offered the moral support. she passed her exams and she still has it down as one of the best days of her life because she definitely thought she’d be the first one in the family to fail.  after seeing how much fun posie and nate were having at st judes, she decided to try her luck and was even more surprised when she was accepted there too. for the first time in her life, it felt like she was getting somewhere on her own and she was.  her first year at the school has been quiet and she’s struggled a little to form friendships without the guidance of her older siblings. the bigger personalities have definitely overwhelmed her but she’s slowly finding her feet. one person who has particularly been a good support system for her has been her tutor, who helps her manage her dyslexia when lectures and assignments come around. he’s always boosting her up and has at times let her get a better grade than she would’ve got by editing her assignments for her. there have been a few times where she’s been invited to his home; usually with a study group but the last few times have been just her.  she’s starting to feel slightly uncomfortable around him. especially since he’s been making the work harder so that she needs to rely on him more; he also sent her a christmas present this year in the form of a revealing dress and jewellery for her ‘christmas party’..which she isnt sure is fully appropriate.  while she doesn’t feel like she can open up and (quite frankly) is afraid to, it’s made her cling to her other siblings more than before.

I don’t think I could accurately describe the feeling in my chest to anyone that would ask. Happiness because I would be with my family and my brothers, dread having to restart a whole new life for myself, miserable for having to leave all my friends and my teammates behind, and eager for all of the opportunities I knew would come my way with being with my family again. But still, the sadness seemed to outweigh the happiness. And I feel selfish for that, because the whole reason I came home was for my brothers and that should put me at the bottom of the selfishness list.

From beside me, my Mom places her hand on my arm gently, obviously noticing the glum look on my face as I stared blankly out the car window. “I know you’re upset honey,” She begins, and I know she’s trying to tiptoe around her words. “But this is what you wanted. You wanted to be with Jack before he left this summer, support Luke his last few years, be able to go to Quinn’s games before he signs. And you needed this for yourself, you haven’t been the same since you and Brady broke up, are you sure you’re okay?”

My eyes close on instinct at the mention of his name. It makes me flinch, and you would think by now she would understand he wasn’t a light subject. “Mom, I’m sure. We broke up a month ago, I’m moving on. He was a jerk anyway.”

“Okay, okay,” She mumbles, finally getting onto the highway away from the airport towards our house. “The boys still don’t know that you’re home! I’m sure they’re gonna be thrilled to see you again.”

“Yeah, I hope,” I chuckle, looking out the window at the vaguely familiar landscaping that whizzes past. It was strange how New Hampshire was more of my home than Michigan and Toronto was more of a home than both of those states combined. Honestly, I’d go back to Canada in a heartbeat if I could.

In my hand, my phone starts buzzing persistently, and I recognize the ringtone everywhere. It’s my best friend, Savannah, facetiming me. I quickly answer it missing her face already, and when I do, there’s more than just one face in the frame. “Hey guys.”

“I miss you!” Is the first thing that comes out of Sav’s mouth and her lips form a pout. “Our room feels so empty without your stuff everywhere.”

“Is Mama Hughes there?” Kylie butts in, a grin on her face. I point my phone towards my mom, and instantly all my former teammates and best friends start saying their hello’s to her. “We really miss you, J. Practice wasn’t the same without our captain.”

“It was so… weird,” Savannah shudders. “Coach had to compose us all instead of you doing it. I had to lead stretches, Emerson lead some drills, it just isn’t the same. I can’t wait to see you in February, you better make it to that tournament.”

I smile at Savannah through the screen. In February we had planned to come to Michigan for a tournament, and it worked out perfectly now with me being home and being able to go. “You know that I wouldn’t miss it for the world. Hey, did you guys decide on a new captain yet?”

“Nope,” Ronnie says immediately. While a part of me is partly happy, the other feels guilty about leaving my team behind. “I don’t know if we will, honestly.”

“So, that means McKenna didn’t get the C,” I state, and the girls on my screen nod. I let out a sigh of relief. “Oh, thank god.”

“Hey J, wrap it up. We’re almost home,” Mom says quietly, and that’s when she turns down onto our street.

“Hey guys, gotta go. We’re home. I’ll text you all later for sure. Don’t miss me too much!” I tease, and the girls all say goodbye, leaving me to hang up. Mom pulls into the driveway of our house, and I can’t help the way my stomach twists in knots.

Mom’s hand reaches out grabbing my own. “Jordan, are you sure you’re okay?” She asks softly and I nod, moving to unbuckle myself and quickly get out of the car. “I really hope you would tell me if you weren’t.”

“I’m okay, Mom,” I reassure her, pulling my hand away from hers to get out. “I just can’t wrap my head around the fact I’m home, and home for good. I’m gonna be starting school here, actually living here for the first time.”

I had pretty much always lived in New Hampshire, having attended a private academy in Wolfeboro. We also had a lake house in the same town, so after school ended I never flew back to Michigan. My family would fly to New Hampshire for the whole summer and that was that, we’d all spend time there. There was never a need for me to be in Plymouth.

As soon as I get out of the car I can hear my brothers around the back on the outdoor rink. A smile forms on my face, and I’m suddenly itching to get out there with them. Mom and I quickly grab my numerous bags and suitcases, lugging them all inside and up to my bedroom that was like every other room in the Hughes household – covered in USA Hockey memorabilia, jerseys from throughout the years, medals from tournaments, you name it.

“Are you gonna go out there with them?” Mom asks giving me a look as she puts a few shirts in my drawers. “I can unpack for you, honey. Go with your brothers.”

I hesitate, looking at all the suitcases and bags that just needed to be unpacked. “Are you sure? I can unpack myself,” I say, but my mother urges me on. I thanked her and grab my stick and skates before making my way downstairs. Instead of going right out, I stand and watch. Alex is out there – he’d been living with us for the past two years and I absolutely adored the kid – and the boys are playing some two on two. I can’t help but smile, especially as Luke steals the puck away from Jack as if it was nothing.

No matter how bad I want to go out there, I can’t bring myself to tear my eyes away from my three brothers and the boy that was pretty much an honorary brother at this point. It didn’t hit me until now, this very moment, that I could possibly be messing up a system the boys had down pat. Instead of coming home and calming the storm, I could just be the eye of the hurricane and bringing the storm to wreak havoc on my family.

“Hey kiddo,” I hear my dad speak, so I whip around to engulf him in a hug. “We missed you, you know.”

“You saw me like two months ago,” I laugh against his chest, pulling away a brief few seconds later. “But I missed you guys too and I’m really happy to be back.”

Dad offers me a soft smile before his eyes glance from my stick and skates to outside, where the boys are still fooling around. “Are you gonna go out? I’m sure they’ve got room for one more.”

“I will in a few,” I say, looking over my shoulder at the boys.

“Honey, what ever is on your mind you need to push it away. The boys missed you, especially Jack and you know that. Don’t be so worried.”

I turn back to look at my dad. “How’d you know my mind is racing right now?”

He chuckles and pushes me on. “You’re my daughter, Jordan. And quite frankly something is always going on inside of your head. Now go out there.”

Finally I muster up the courage to go outside. The cold Michigan November wind bites at my skin, but if anything it just feels like home to me. There’s no place I’d rather be, especially if it meant I was surrounded by my family and my brothers. I know exactly the way to go to not be seen thanks to many occasions of scaring the boys, so going unspotted was fairly easily, and I make it to the dressing shack to get my skates on. Once I’m laced up I push open the door.

“Hey, you got room for one more?” I yell over the commotion of the boys laughing, and just like that it all stops and they’re all facing me.

“Jordan!” Lukey is the first one to react - he’s skating over to the boards and I hurry to meet him there. “What’re you doing here?”

I wrap my arms around my youngest brother, who even though is on skates, is now nearly a whole foot taller than me. “Hi Lukey,” I giggle into the fifteen year old who’s pretty much squeezing me to death, but I’m not complaining. Then I’m trapped in a group hug of four of my favorite boys.

“What’re you doing home? You still have half a semester left, you’re supposed to be in class right now.” Jack asks, and once they all release me I rest my arms on the top of the boards.

“I’m home.”

“Well no duh you’re home,” Luke retorts and I’m quick to shoot him a look. He puts his hands up defensively.

But Quinn is the first one to connect all the puzzle pieces. A grin forms on his face. “Wait, wait, really? You’re home-home?”

“I’m home-home,” I confirm, and the three of my brothers all exchange knowing smiles. “So sorry, Alex. Now you’ve got to deal with me too.”

Alex chuckles. “You’re never a problem, J. You know that. I’m probably just as excited as them.”

Jack then starts to hit his best friend repeatedly on the arm. “Dude, now we have to tell the guys about her. Now they get to meet her.”

My eyes light up at the mention of the NTDP boys. Sure, I had been to Jack’s games for the US program before, but I had never actually met his teammates before.

“Are you sure you want her around those boys?” Quinn asks.

“On second thought, never mind.” Jack says, but then he sticks his hand out to help me over the boys. “C’mon J. We need a goalie, Luke and Alex are kicking our asses.”

“You know, this is the one time I will ever willingly be goalie.”
