CommunistVriska reviews Say Anything’s entire discog from memory (no research allowed)
look if ur a Say Anything superfan maybe stop readin here there will 8e errors and misconceptions this was literally just. from memory. ok so....
....so like Baseball and Early Rarities? pure pop punk. strong lyrics cos 8emis is 8emis but still it's yknow. true to form. ....Is A Real Boy? pop punk but it's operatic and theatrical and Jewish and sex'd up and wow they have synths and vocal harmonies...those drum fills.... ok i can't say enough good things a8out this album. movin on. In Defense of the Genre: 2 Full Length LPs of awesome from 8emis et. al., featuring Gerard Way Hayley Williams that guy whose name i forget from Dance Gavin Dance, and just a8out erryone else in the pop-punk scene at the time. This album is a fucking journey, a masterful synthesis of fiction and autobiography, punk and pop, simplicity and baroqueness - it changed my life and was somehoww, un8elievea8ly, 8etter than ...Is a Real Boy.
their next one was their self-titled LP c. '09 i think? this one's interesting. It's, for 8etter or worse, cleaned up, stripped down, and perfectly orchestrated. their are no errors here. the punk is nowhere to 8e found except in the lyrics, 8ut this 8nt a pure pop-rock al8um either... it's pure Say Anything underneath all the polish 8ut more importantly it's 8emis asserting himself as a master of his fuckin lyrical craft. Cemetery is a contender for top-10 best love songs of the century dsfjdfsdfs it's that good..... Mara and Me addresses political, philosophical, and religious beliefs and undergoes a spoken-word break and at least 1 or 2 key changes in the span of less than five minutes and contains the line "I stand opposed to chaos that you chose / New heart / New bones / Am I not alone?" and if that hasn't sold ye on the al8um i don't know what will!!! it's not hardly pop-punk 8ut it's a masterpiece of its own kind.
okay next i think we havve Anarchy, My Dear from '11 or '12? these dudes are PROLIFIC yo....anyways I'll reveal my poser status I've listened to maybe 3 or 4 of the numerous tracks on this album - worth noting, Self-Titled was only 10 or 12 tracks compared to their usual dou8le-LPs of 18 to 24? anywways this one's a return to form, it's punkier, 8ut not poppier - and has some novvel softness 8ecause 8emis has fallen madly in love so that's swweet. Burn A Miracle kicks ass and is maaaaaaaay8e as punk as Say Anything got in their entire career, the video's killer, u may not get it on the 1st listen (i didn't) but u will be shouting along 8y the second and third :::;)  i promise. it rocks. i gotta listen to this al8um again. A
fter that we've got their least-listened to, vvaguely incomprehensi8le, and deli8er8ly a8rasivve I Don't Think It Is, which is...... S.A.'s foray into noise pop? post-punk? screamo? egads idek wwhat to call this one. it's a mess 8ut it's a hot mess if u uhhhhh :::;) catch my drift sdjfsdjfsdjfs if nothing else listen to the first 2 tracks, Give A Damn and 17 Coked Up and Speeding u wwill either love them or h8 them and if u love them!! congrats there are like 12 more wwhere that came from. Top lyric: "Hey kid !!! ur not a kid anymore u r not a kid anymore / said the fool 2 the mystic / 8e realistic!!!!!!!!" (all the exclam8ion marks there r necessary trust me ::::p
oh 8oy
sorry this is a Massive infodump when i say i lovve this 8and
it is like almost
almost
on par wwith my lovve of the Mountain Goats
*inhales*
Okay so 2016 comes around and both John Darnielle of them aforemention'd Goats and Max 8emis both decide, after yknow,  20-30 years apiece of playin guitars on stage, to stop pplaying guitars on stage, and record a synth/piano al8um. these al8ums, the Goat's Goths and SA's Hebrews, both receive a predicta8ly divvisivve reception from their respectivve fan8ases. He8rews is a master class in lyricism. Remember Bemis's skillfull metaphory, cathartic choruses, and the love that pervades evveryfin he wwrites? Wwell, it's all here in force except now he's like in his 30s and theoretically so8er and happily married and he wwants to tell all of you a8out it!!! and i, for one, am happy to listen and happy for him  more features from his top pop-punk contemporaries despite the fact that they kinda dipp'd out on pop-punk (in its purest form) seven-odd years prior...anyways the Dance Gavin Dance dude is 8ack and also his wwife does 8acking voxx on sevveral tracks. u won't miss the guitar; the synths and drums are dece but the focus here is rly on the passionate screaming/croonin/harmonizin of 8emis and his crew a colla8orateurs. Highlights include 666 which includes the 8old line (from avowwed "8isexual Christian Jew" Max 8emis) : "six six six / i need a fix / never 8etter im a little 8it sick / i hold the fire and the hunger i hold the name and the num8er / 8ang 8ang 8ang / i hit & ran / left my inner child dead in the drain / i hold the grudge and the burden i hold the tongue and an organ / SIX SIX SIX" like damn save some religious complexity, blinding rage, pure love, and drug-fueled angst for the rest of us, 8emis...... all that said the angst isn't actually the highlight of this al8um, listen to The Shape of Love to Come ft. Sherri DuPree-Bemis and u wwill either 8e yearning to fall in lovve or realise that you're already falling don't say i didn't warn ya. Say Anything's final album, first and only concept album, and stripped-down emotionally-raw theatrical-tragic-enigmatic-magic LP Oliver Appropri8 is theoretically a8out a college student wwho struggles with his sexuality and gender identity, plays Magic the Gathering (or att least references it), has an Adderall ha8it that takes control of his life, and almost certainly dies in a murder-suicide. yeah, it's good. it's Say Anything with the production and orchestra trimm'd down to just Max and the band, and the lyrics are front and center. But it's fuckin painful and i might have to rate it the lowest simply on account of it hurts it hurts it hurts i don't think 8emis was in a good place when he wrote this.....it's beyond dark t8h. i had to stop halfway thru on multiple occasions and still haven't 8een a8le to listen to it while fully mentally present. it is too much for me to handle so yeah this review stays brief.....listen to Oliver Appropriate if you like pain, or you can't relate at all i guess?? idk idk. Then Say Anything 8roke up. (:::: what a story
