title: leclerc vs verstappen: the true story of the first clash at the time of karting
source: tkart author: yanek sterzel format: editorial (english & italian) season: 2012, karting
Translation courtesy of Auto Motorsport on Youtube.
Excerpt:
Why – you will ask me – did you decide to go and do this interview that day after an ordinary heat? The answer is simple: Jos Verstappen. [...] At some point we see that Verstappen and Leclerc start with a good clash on the track. A bit rough, perhaps, but exciting. Verstappen has the upper hand. After driving through the finish line, however, Leclerc who had lost ground in the scuffle, recovered and in returning to the pit he came up beside and surpasses Verstappen in quite a hard way, so much so that Verstappen ends up going off the track into the marsh which had formed due to the rain. A real insult. I said to myself, “Max ended up off the track. In my opinion, Jos is flying into rage and probably slaps are flying in the closed park. Let us go and film everything”. Ronnie and I started running like crazy towards the closed park which, in Val d’Argenton is exactly on the opposite side of the stands. You should know that Jos Verstappen, Max’s father, is quite well-known for making “fireworks” on some occasions, let us say because of particular stresses, and we absolutely did not want to miss them. Instead, as you can see from the video, Jos is visibly angry, yet he does not utter a single word. Max, on the other hand, lets off steam with us while Charles, with his good “angel face” that he had and still has today, underplays what happened despite knowing that he had played a spiteful trick to his opponent just before. For the record, both will be excluded from the heat. Keep in mind that they had won basically all the heats they had respectively taken part in. Therefore, due to the only direct clash between them, they managed to get disqualified!
Tumblr media
There is a video interview – which went viral on YouTube – which is the real historical testimony of the first clash (and it is appropriate to say it…) between the two young F1 drivers. Find out what really happened that time from the words of those who saw that episode with their own eyes.
The video is this and it is what today is called a “viral” content video. The word horrifies me because it is used and abused, yet “technically” correct, in the sense that, spreading like a virus, this video has largely exceeded the audience limits it was originally supposed to reach (now it is over 700,000 views) given the content it shows, that is an interview with two kart drivers (the young Leclerc and Verstappen) who are bickering at a distance over some disagreements on the track.
The moment in which the video in question goes viral is a precise date in the calendar, June 30th, 2019. During the competition of the Austrian F1 Grand Prix, those who were at that moment two of the most talented young F1 drivers that the highest series can offer, Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) and Max Verstappen (Red Bull) get involved into a contact while fighting for the victory, as shown in the video of the YouTube Formula 1 channel. Then someone notices that this was not the first time that there was a disagreement between Leclerc and Verstappen. So, the TKART interview with the two drivers, after a kart race 7 years earlier pops out. Since the story that is repeated sometimes is tragic but sometimes it can be funny, in a short time the video, unknown until that moment, is taken up by international TV and shared non-stop on social networks. Yet not many people know what actually happened on that day by now May 5th, 2012 in a remote French karting track where the 2nd round of the WSK Euro Series was competed. First of all, everything refers not to an actual race, not to a final, so to speak, but to a certain race. One of the approximate 15 heats that the KF2 (the category in which Leclerc and Verstappen competed) raced that weekend with the sole purpose of defining the starting grid of the prefinals which in turn sanctioned, with its order of arrival, the starting grid of the actual finals, the race which really counts in a karting event. In a race, there are about 10 -15 heats, as the number varies according to the number of participants. In a year, people like us who follow all the international karting races, will see a few hundred of them once all the events and all the categories are added together. To be honest, we do not write a report for each one of these heats or get an interview at the end of each one.
LECLERC & VERSTAPPEN Both born in 1997, Charles Leclerc (Principality of Monaco) and Max Verstappen (The Netherlands) started to get to know each other since the time of international karting races. After racing on their respective national territories, they arrived at the circuit of the competitions that count, the important WSK and FIA races and in a few seasons, they showed the whole world that they had what it takes to continue their path towards F1.

… And today!
Then why – you will ask me – did you decide to go and do this interview that day after an ordinary heat? The answer is simple, Jos Verstappen. Let me explain myself better. Me and Ronnie (Ghezzi, my colleague with whom I founded TKART) were in the indoor stands as it was raining  buckets, watching the Saturday heats of this race on a track where we would never come back too, the International Circuit du Val d’Argenton (France). At some point we see that Verstappen and Leclerc start with a good clash on the track. I said to myself “Max ended up off the track. Despite this, they will take part in the finals (here is the “artisan” video made by Ronnie and me) with Max Verstappen (Intrepid - TM Racing) forced to retire in the first lap because of a contact he had due to a start from the very back of the pack, and Charles Leclerc (Art Grand Prix – Parilla) who will instead finish fourth at the foot of the podium after starting from the pole position, behind a certain Antonio Giovinazzi (Tony Kart – Vortex). On top of the podium we find Felice Tiene (CRG – BMB), second Flavio Camponeschi (Tony Kart – Vortex), while Anthoine Hubert (Formula K – TM Racing) will unfortunately end up in the tenth position. What an amazing race, especially in the last lap with Tom Joyner (LH – BMB), Giovinazzi and Leclerc providing a great show.
Tumblr media
The rankings of the heat which was the scene of the clash between the two drivers. Max and Charles are part of the “excluded” group.
Tumblr media
The overall rankings after the conclusion of all the heats. As you can see from the string of results in correspondence with the names of Max and Charles, the two drivers had started the weekend with the pole position and a fifth spot respectively in qualifying. Then, in the heats, they only had victories (except in one case for Max), until the contact between the two which forced the motorsport marshals to exclude them from the heat with the consequence of 26 penalties each.
Tumblr media
The final classification speaks for itself and confirms the old saying “While two dispute, the third enjoys”. Between the two weekend performers (Max and Charles), in the end the third, Felice Tiene prevailed! Presently, Felice does not race any longer. He is a coach of promising young kart drivers and is happily married as well as a new father.

The map, taken from Google Maps, of the Val d’Argenton track. Just to show the distance between the grandstand (red circle) and the closed park (yellow circle) to those funny guys who in the YouTube video commented on Yanek Sterzel’s [Editor-in-chief of TKART – Editor’s note] shortness of breath. Try flying from one end of the track to the other in a few seconds! Just kidding, of course!

We need transparency: Lewis Hamilton tells F1 to be tough on budget cap
Lewis Hamilton has insisted the FIA must act decisively and with appropriate tough measure if any teams are found to have broken Formula One’s budget cap regulations. The seven-times champion said the integrity of the sport was at stake and pointedly noted how last season his Mercedes rivals Red Bull appeared to be spending heavily on upgrading their car. At last weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix unproven allegations emerged that Red Bull had exceeded the £114m budget cap set for 2021. The team strenuously denied that they had breached the budget with the FIA currently assessing all the teams’ financial submissions for compliance with the cap. On Wednesday they were due to announce their conclusions but instead issued a statement declaring that their judgment had yet to be reached and would be delayed until Monday. The FIA can impose punishments on teams found to be in breach of the rules, including a deduction of points or exclusion from the championship, either of which could impact the result of last year’s title race, narrowly won by Red Bull’s Max Verstappen over Hamilton. Speaking before this weekend’s Japanese Grand Prix, the British driver said any team found guilty should be punished appropriately. “I think it’s imperative, honestly, just for transparency,” he said. “I think we need to continue to have transparency for the fans, for the integrity of the sport.” Hamilton also said the FIA’s delay in announcing their findings indicated that the governing body understood the import of the decision they were making., “I would like to think that if it’s been delayed it’s because it’s been taken very seriously” he said. “I trust that Mohammed [ben Sulayem, FIA president] is taking it seriously and will do what is right for the sport, I hope.” The Mercedes team principal, Toto Wolff, had been blunt in Singapore in expressing how he believed overspending on the budget could definitively make a difference in car performance. Hamilton took the fight with Verstappen to the wire last season, which was ultimately decided after the controversial Verstappen win in Abu Dhabi, where he took the title by just eight points. The season had ebbed and flowed between the two drivers and Hamilton observed how expensive he believed it was for Red Bull as they had continued to bring a raft of upgrades to their car. “I remember last year as a driver, you were always asking for updates, updates, updates on things, I remember in Silverstone when we got our last update and that was almost three-tenths and I’m pretty certain it cost less than a million,” he said. “But I remember after that needing more updates but then seeing updates continuing to arrive on the other car, thinking: ‘Jeez, it’s going to be hard to beat them in the championship if they keep bringing updates.’ “It’s so integral to development, the development race and if we had another half a million to spend we would have been in a different position at some of the following races.” Quick Guide How do I sign up for sport breaking news alerts? When asked about the row over the cap at Suzuka Verstappen declined to make a comment on the situation. “To be honest, I’m not really busy with these kind of things,” he said. “It’s up to the teams and with the FIA and I just need to focus on the driving. There’s not much more to say on that. I guess we’ll find out on Monday.” Verstappen is in position to seal his second championship this weekend if he wins the race and his Ferrari rival Charles Leclerc finishes lower than second place. via Formula One | The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/sport/formulaone

“Do not count your chickens before they are hatched.” – Aesop
Because if you do, surely you will have underestimated. Both the quantity and quality of the Make A Chicken project assignment far exceeded my expectations for my art students in grades 5 and 6 at Miscoe Hill School, in Mendon, MA. Three key events came together as I assigned this project on April 13:
My husband and I had added eight chicks to our little farm on April 8. They were precious and sweet and truly brought much needed joy to our lives as we quarantined due to COVID19
On Facebook, I had seen the work of Massachusetts College of Art and Design Professor Chuck Stigliano and his students as they responded to his Chicken Challenge assignment: https://www.facebook.com/MassArtBoston/posts/10157789254776201
My school district was set to enjoy a school vacation from April 20-24. As we entered our 5th week of remote learning on April 13, I wanted to assign something cheerful and engaging to be accomplished with found materials already at home.
Patrick C
As we approached the fifth week of remote learning, I still hadn’t seen or heard from about half of my 196 students. Families were adjusting to learning at home and the many challenges they were suddenly confronting. Students weren’t yet sure what their responsibilities were and it was a nebulous time for many. I had been pushing out simple drawing tasks along with a weekly wellness check-in, where I asked students to send a photo or short video of themselves or what they were doing to pass the time to share with the rest of the class. I would upload the photos and videos to Animoto and create a weekly video to share via Google Classroom and as an unlisted video on my Youtube channel. More students participated in this weekly check-in than with the weekly drawing assignments. After a few weeks, my district shifted from “practice” and “optional” assignments to “regular” assignments and participation grew immediately.
During the week of April 13, I pushed out the Make A Chicken assignment with an introductory video:
I fielded questions throughout the week and shared creations on social media as they came in. It was a daily delight to look at the fun submissions to Google Classroom. And curating chickens for publication became my morning focus.
Liam F
That week, students were also asked to complete a survey about the art materials they had at home. As it turns out, many did not have colored pencils, chalk, crayons, or paint. The only items 100% of my students had at home were pencils, paper, and scissors. The Make A Chicken project allowed for everyone to create and create they did! Here are just some of the chickens that were submitted (you can click on a photo and view the collection as a slideshow):

In all, about 160 hand-crafted chickens were submitted. Some are shared above, and I’m happy to add that you can see these chickens and more on Artsonia in our Make A Chicken gallery: https://www.artsonia.com/museum/gallery.asp?project=1981037
My principal, Jennifer Mannion, was inspired to Make A Chicken and I was delighted to find this image in my email one day:
Jennifer Mannion, Principal, Miscoe Hill School
How creative is that?
And it just kept happening that people from all aspects of my life shared their chickens with me! This is the absolutely magical thing about the Make A Chicken project! For the first time in all my years of facilitating art making in school and sharing artwork via social media, this project is the first that knew no boundaries. Art teachers reached out to me for the lesson and family and friends across the United States shared chickens with me that they had made. Here is a special gallery of “affiliate” Make A Chicken submissions:
Sarah G of New Boston, NH – Granddaughter
Nellie M of Denver, CO – Great niece
Julia G of New Boston, NH – Granddaughter
Jayne M of Somerville, MA – Sister in Law
Pam S of Bridgewater, MA – Second Cousin
Penny S of Raynham – First cousin once removed (my father’s cousin)
My father’s cousin, Penny Sawyer, not only shared the quilted chicken (above) with me, she shared the story of the original quilt maker, Barbara LaFlamme. Barbara was a friend of Penny’s who I had also spent time with visiting quilt shows with Penny and my mom. Barbara passed away after a long illness in June 2019. When Penny introduced us, she knew we would enjoy each other’s company because Barbara was a former teacher, retiring after 30 years of teaching art. In her spare time she enjoyed quilting and crafting. And indeed we did enjoy each other’s company, especially when Penny and Barbara would drive up to visit the Thimble Pleasure quilt show at Blackstone Valley Tech with my mother and me. The photo below is from a visit to my home after the quilt show, apparently around St. Patrick’s Day, 2018:
When Barbara’s family was going through her home after her passing, they found some unfinished quilts, including a collection of chicken squares. As Barbara and Penny often worked together (at least conspiratorially) on quilts, Barbara’s family gave Penny the unfinished quilts.  Penny took the chicken squares and sewed them together to make this beautiful quilt:
Barbara and Penny’s Chicken Quilt
I especially enjoy the stitched sayings around the edges(Penny) and the incredibly detailed stitchery and beadwork on the individual squares (Barbara):
I’m grateful to the Make A Chicken project for taking on a life of it’s own as I stumbled through the middle weeks of COVID19 enforced Remote Learning. I have enjoyed sharing the creations across social media where I believe they were enjoyed by all. As we go forward into the final six weeks of remote learning, I’m focused on maintaining the joy, creativity, and humor the Make A Chicken project fostered. I thank everyone for participating and once again thank Chuck Stigliano for the idea. Thanks for reading, “peeps”:
