Cassie was a city girl and had a hard time adjusting to the Gulch. That when Compton introduces her to bee keeping.

This is so smart like....Compton being really in touch with zoolepathy makes this so clever. She's talking about how different it is than the city, how spread out everything is, there's no bustle like what she was used to, and Compton is taken aback because things tend to be super sprawling and busy to him even in the countryside to him because he's always listening to the animals. And the hives are the most like the tightly packed urban areas she remembered so he shows her them and shows her how to listen to the bees. And Cassie reminds Compton of the bees, her clever nature, her constant need to stay busy and be the most efficient worker on her personal projects, etc.

I think that could be such a sweet thing to make the two connect like initially even, like that's sort of what makes them close to begin with and it ends up just being their 'thing', talking through the bees and bonding through things like that... while I'm here I just wanted to say that Cassie and Compton are so very much "has the capacity to talk for 10 straight hours" type friends. They have more times than countable stayed up straight up all night just talking about things. These two know everything about one another and all the secrets of the universe from all the talking they've done (/hj)
