ok i really didn't understand the many shades of secular jew there can be. in that the other day i had to explain to my jewish coworker what purim is
#he was like ''i know we used to go get hamantaschen from the local german bakery. i just don't know why''#i ended up reciting a summary of the book of esther along with describing the basic activities#and let me tell you. book of esther very entertaining to recite loudly at work.#i think it floored me so much just because i always thought of purim in particular as a 'kid holiday' that youd do regardless of observance#just. you know. even if you don't go to shul you still dress the kids up in princess dresses and go whirl some graggers#but now that i think about it. shul was where the dress-wearing and gragger-whirling was performed. so.#like it makes sense NOW but at the time i was like. what the fuck could that question even mean#what IS purim.#box opener
