he says it himself: “that is my starting line. that is how i feel.” and the really amazing thing is, like. while i personally don't vibe so well with the idea of Forgiving His Mother™ - it's his choice and that is how he feels. he made the conscious decision to start there and i think that’s really gorgeous. survivors are the only ones who get to decide who to forgive and who to resent and it should be based wholly on what THEY want and how it will help THEM move forward/come to terms with their circumstances. not what someone else might “deserve.” and i just love. seeing him make those choices? technically both at once? it’s really. relatable.

i don’t quite see the starting line as explicitly just mending shit with his mam. i see his starting line as having found himself free enough to even make these calls in the first place. and still needing practice! unlocking something he’d been neglecting and suppressing and needing to find a new way to nurture it all on his own, away from the toxicity that kept him in such a tight box for such a long time. thinking for himself even beyond just being spiteful @ endeavor (which is also valid as hell, lbr.) letting himself breathe and grow and flourish. those words carry so much more than succeeding and perfecting.

really, deku didn’t just open up that box; he opened up the whole fucking sky for him. whole world of possibilities and paths and experiences just as rooted in making connections as it’s rooted in reacquainting himself with the person he is and wants to be. part of his starting line is accepting that kind of help - he deserves it, he has to know he deserves to be supported and he deserves to feel safe leaning on other people sometimes.
