i saw a honey bee

struggling to fly out of a shallow puddle on the sidewalk

i picked her up, on a leaf, and set her aside

i was trying to help

she crawled from the leaf onto my arm

i had a bee on my arm

for a moment

i was content

it felt nice to be appreciated

even by a small insect on the road

she stung my hand

and i was

perplexed

why

why would you hurt someone who tried so hard to protect you

why would you hurt yourself
