yves - loop 🎵
initial thoughts:
i wish translations were already available bc i feel like the lyrics are so important to this ep.
it’s nice to go into an album knowing that the artist had so much say over the sound + development of the project, bc even if i don’t particularly enjoy it, it’s still really encouraging to know that this is what yves wanted to create and release.
i’ve only followed the loona members distantly and i know almost kp nothing about yves other than the info surrounding this release, so i’m excited to get to know her a bit more through this
diorama: i like the flow of the melody + the beat and instrumentals of the tracks. it’s so lowkey but the bass is so prominent that it doesn’t feel soft. reminds me of eunoia (billlie) in certain parts. it will be a grower for me, but it definitely has a place already on some playlists
loop (feat. lil cherry): i just watched the mv and idk how i feel about it. there’s potential though… i want to know what she’s saying… she looked so proud in the mv especially toward the end. like she was exactly where she was meant to and wanted to be and that’s super powerful // i think the instrumental to this would be soo nice. i’m unsure about all the choices made with the singing + rap but the instrumental is sooo fantastic. i already know this will grow on me + i’ll have a more informed opinion once the lyrics drop
afterglow: such a pretty title… i like the opening a lot. her voice sounds so beautiful here. this is so different from the previous two songs but it makes sense still. ik she introduced this as meeting someone [like an ex] and wanting that relationship back but not but then realizing maybe you do and being confused about where you’re at emotionally + what you want. it felt so brief
goldfish: a fan song 🤍 she emotes so well with just her voice. i like the melody and atmosphere of the song a lot. I’m sure this is the one that had folk influences, which i always love. my og genre 🫶
overall:
while i would have liked a more sonically cohesive project, it’s obv okay to have your solo be diverse. the transition between songs isn’t entirely smooth, but i think it’s just the result of having such variety with only four tracks. there’s not space to soften or transition. her voice sounds so different between each song, so the diversity was a great choice for showing off how lovely her vocals are + how much potential she has for future releases. a longer ep or full album will be super interesting for sure
i want to listen again. it makes me want to hear more from her and check out performances and how she explains everything from this album. it keeps my interest in yves as an artist and will make me follow her cb, which is a key goal of a debut, so i think she’s successful.
i think it comes across as simpler and easier to digest than it is. it seems like something that’s meant to be turned over and over and held onto for a while. i really like how genuine the entire album feels. it feels like it was made intentionally and with a lot of care.
afterglow is predictably the standout track for me, bc of the topic and sound. i like all of it a lot, and ik it will grow on me. idk how i’ll feel about it a month from now, but it’ll be nice to explore that in the meantime.

loona reaction to their s/o pulling them in for a slow dance in the living room
➢ 💌; fluff
.・。.・゜✭・.・✫・゜・。• ..・。.・゜✭・. ° • .
heejin
Tumblr media
you were watching some music channel on tv together when a song you particularly liked was being played, and you stood up dragging heejin with you. she was very confused at first, but she didn't try to pull away from you, simply settling for giving you a weird look, waiting for an explanation. even if you didn't answer her as to why you were doing that, she let herself go and let you take the lead, spinning her around and all. she was having a lot of fun after just a little bit and she was smiling and giggling the whole time. she was feeling very mushy and romantic after, giving you a kiss after the other.
hyunjin
Tumblr media
you were home alone, taking care of some stuff that needed to be done and, as every romantic film suggested, you were playing music in the background, dancing and singing out loud, grabbing whatever object you had around you to use as a "microphone". when hyunjin entered, most likely she wasn't expecting you to have a whole ass concert in the kitchen, and she decided to stand at the door way, looking at you with a smirk. as soon as you spotted her, you didn't even feel embarassed or startled, you dragged her by the arm to join you, since the next song playing happened to be a slow one, leading her the whole time and having fun. she was laughing so much it was literally heaven for you, and after the song was over she was hugging you from behind, giving your neck some kisses and reminding you how much she loved you.
haseul
Tumblr media
oh she would love it! she thought it was so so romantic! like, being pulled by you in the middle of the living room while you were both cleaning around, and your cute squeak after hearing her favorite song on the radio before exclaiming "it's your favorite song, let's dance!". it wasn't necessairly a song that you could easily dance to, but you made it work somehow, mainly focusing on having fun and enjoying being with each other. also, neither of you were experts in slow dancing, ending up with your feet being stepped on pretty frequently, but you had so much fun nonetheless. being with you was everything haseul could ever wish for.
yeojin
Tumblr media
[s so small]
she deadass would judge you very hard and question your song choice. she wouldn't be suspicious when you suggested to simply listening to songs and have a little dancing match, as she was positive she would beat you and make you cry. when she heard you had picked a slow song, she would start to complain, but stopping her mid sentence as you grabbed her waist and started gently moving side to side, resting you head on her shoulder. she would- remain speechless, to say the least. you weren't usually the couple to do such things, you promised each other to never be cringe like others. however, in that moment, being so close to you, made her feel so warm, and she decided to surrender and being led by you, dancing to the song you picked out.
vivi
Tumblr media
she is so happy! it felt like such a bonding and romantic moment to her, she never wanted to let you go. it was pretty rare that you got to spend time alone without the rest of the girls, and although both of you were thankful to have such amazing friends by your side, you cherished moments like that, when you could be in each other's company and no one else's. when you started leading her, she would let herself go and melt in your arms, letting you spin her around. i could not stress this enough, but she would feel so safe embraced by you, your warm hands on her waist, you pretty eyes looking at her as if she was the only one you cared about (true), and she felt so so loved.
kim lip
Tumblr media
she would suggest you did some couple stuff every once in a while, but for most times, i feel like if you wanted something specific with her, you had to get it yourself. and hearing you guys' favorite song, would give you the perfect opportunity. she was already starting to hum the melody of the song, until you literally pulled her off the couch, making her phone that she had in her hands fly away, and causing her to look at you surprised. you didn't say a thing, bringing her closer to your body and smiling at her, leaving a kiss on her soft lips and beginning to move around the living room, leading her, still lowkey confused but enjoying every second of it
jinsoul
Tumblr media
you definitely caught jinsoul off guard! she was usually the one to do "cringey" couple stuff, embarassing you in front of the members and overall showing her love for you so openly. but this time, you literally left her speechless- which was unusual of her- , watching you from behind as you dragged her by the arm, from the couch where you were cuddling to the centre of the living room, in front of the tv where the music was coming from. "slow dancing in the living room? which movie did you get this idea from?" she would tease you, since it was a once in a lifetime type of thing that you did things like this. jinsoul was the most cheesy and romantic of the couple, to be honest. you told her to shut up, refraining yourself from laughing, and both of you focused on dancing, looking at each other in the eyes, both so full of love for the person they had before them.
choerry
Tumblr media
i feel like you would have the same idea at the exact same time! the song playing on the radio happened to be one that you two listened to a lot, because you felt like the lyrics talked about you, and so you could relate to them and feel like your bodies were moving without thinking whenever you listened to it. you stood up from the couch at the exact same time, giggling when you realised, and you would bow down, offering her a hand and asking her "may i have this dance, milady?" making her chuckle behind her hands, and accepting, playing along by also bowing in front of you. you would place your hands on her and she would already feel lost, melting in your arms and letting you take the lead, closing her eyes and enjoying this romantic moment in your company
yves
Tumblr media
you were so bored. yes, you usually had dates where you simply lay on the couch, maybe cuddling or watching tv, but this time you felt like your legs would fall off if you didn't get up and used them. you turned off the tv, making yves look up at you at the loss of sound that was coming from the device, and as she was about to ask if you wanted to go home, you had finished googling the song you wanted on your phone, standing up and offering her a hand. she slowly accepted it and stood up, still questioning your actions but not saying anything. when she song started you began to lead your girlfriend, spinning her around. i think she would start taking the lead after a while, smiling at how flustered you got and kissing you tenderly.
chuu
Tumblr media
i think you guys would usually goof around and randomly turn on a song and dancing to it, yelling the lyrics out loud and laughing your lungs out whenever one of you fell because of how hard you were dancing. however, you didn't play a slow song often- or let's say never. this time you felt like it, reason why you decided to put said song on your phone and put the volume all the way up. you looked for chuu, who was in the kitchen getting herself a glass of water, and you took her all the way to the living room, and started to lead her and make her spin and swaying side to side without saying a word. she would happily ask you the reason behind all that, but you didn't answer, wanting to enjoy the moment and she got the hint, hugging you tighter and resting her head against your shoulder, and whispering "i love you" in your ear.
gowon
Tumblr media
she's such a fan of stuff like this! you would literally make her heart melt by doing these things, maybe commonly considered cringey or cheesy or unnecessary, but she didn't care! she felt so loved and appreciated if you did stuff like that for her! she felt like a princess the moment you took her small hand in yours and started leading her, spinning her around the living room, mesmerized by you and how good you looked in that moment (and always). you were so amazing in her eyes and she couldn't help but fall for you harder and harder each time you spent time together. she would probably suggested you romantically danced like that more often.
olivia hye
Tumblr media
it was one of those lazy days where you guys simply cuddled on the couch, using your phones, showing memes to each other every once in a while. you peeked over at your girlfriend's phone when you heard her scoff under her breath, just to see one of those embarassing couples on tik*ok. "why am i on straight tik*ok?" she complained, making you chuckle, but at the same time giving you an idea. you stood up, making her follow you with her eyes, wondering what had gotten into you, and you turned on the music on your phone, choosing a painfully slow song, pulling her in the centre of the living room with you to slow dance together. she only briefly attempted to pull away, before giving up and resting her chin on you shoulder, letting you take lead. she was cute and would never admit she liked it.

a covidsation with mary claire
For the first Covidsation for autumn quarter, here is an interview I did back in May with Mary Claire, my dear friend and one of my favorite local artists. Mary Claire is a singer-songwriter based here in Seattle who makes “sad girl rock” (see: Mitski, Angel Olsen, etc.). I first met them through the DIY scene and was lucky enough to book them at the finale Red Room show, a house venue I used to live at and help run. As evidenced by the picture below taken that very night, seeing Mary Claire play live is a magical, mesmerizing, captivating experience. Often accompanied with minimal, but tonally-rich instrumentals, their powerful and hauntingly stunning voice paired with visceral, poetic lyrics transport you into another realm. I *highly* recommend listening to their album Phantom Limb, which you can find on your streaming platform of choice or you can snag a physical copy at Everyday Music on the Hill like I did! Last month, they also just released an incredible stop-motion music video for their song off PL called “I Don’t Like Drinking”, directed, edited, and animated by Barb Hoffman, which you can find here! Thank you Mary Claire for these thoughtful responses and for creating such vulnerable, beautiful art <3
Tumblr media
Lola Gil: Tell me about your project. How has it evolved? Which artists are you most inspired by? How would you describe your sound?
Mary Claire: Hi hi I’m Mary Claire. I was never someone who was playing music since they were a little kiddo, it was something I picked up my senior year of high school. But pretty much everyone in my family has some amazing and weirdly specific aptitude for music, so I think being surrounded by that kind of allowed me to gather an eclectic, personal understanding, appreciation, and internalized feeling for music, so I never really took lessons or anything like that. I enjoyed and still enjoy that from the start, I was okay with the fact that I didn’t know “academic” theory and I just played with what feels and sounds right. And I still do that. So I played around with all those youthful punk feelings and had an angsty band in high school that was not bad for small town Sacramento. I think I learned so much from that and it gave me a flood of unhindered and unhinged confidence for recording, performing, maneuvering stage mechanics and technicalities, etc. Also it introduced me into the world of songwriting that I did for that band and for myself that just immediately poured out of me, which led me to what I’m doing now. I am extremely lyrically-focused and write mostly about lived personal experience that I surrender to and make extremely overly-wordy. I went from a solo act, to a bigger full piece crunchier band, to me and a piano player, back to a solo set, so I’m really just kind of evolving with my resources, the songs I’m currently living in and playing, and with what would bring everything to life most fully.
I’m inspired by everyone, even if I don’t necessarily sound like them or listen to them all the time. Like, my adoration for incredibly angry punk music is what got me started in the creation of my own music, so that foundation will never leave me. Even though I won’t sound like IDLES or Shame or Pissed Jeans, their point of view and their devotion to cramming so many words into one breath is a place I also come from. We execute similar feelings in different ways. And though I currently am not anything like Yves Tumor, King Krule, or FKA Twigs, the layers in their stuff sends me so far. But I think lyrically and melodically, I pull inspiration from and sink most into Mitski, Sasami, Angel Olsen, Palehound, Big Thief, Bella Porter, Darci Phenix, Fiona Apple, Sufjan Stevens, Izumi, and Weyes Blood.
Someone once said my tunes are “sad girl rock” and I think that sticks in a fun, quick way, so that’s what I tell people. But more recently, the stuff on my upcoming album I think is like a sad, fucked up, incredibly fast-paced nursery rhyme book (lol). I’m really excited for this album I wrote, more than anything ever. Also my good friend and twin flame Francis is helping me record it and is giving me a lot of knowledge and challenges and affirmations and inspiration. I owe a lot of this second album’s production and complexity him. There are a lot more people involved in the recording of this one, so it’s a lot fuller in a new and exciting and scary way.
LG: As an artist, how have you been affected by the pandemic? I saw most of your tour you had booked was unfortunately cancelled-- are you planning on rescheduling?
MC: Rescheduling feels so completely beyond me right now, so I am just considering it to be cancelled until things in the world really start to settle down to some degree of safety and responsibility. However, the silver lining in all of this ‘rona stuff is that it has given me a ton of time to recenter myself with my music and devote my own energy into recording and feeling the core of my upcoming album. I think when the world is moving so fast, it’s easy for me to feel like I’m behind, like other people are getting shit done faster and in a more “impressive way”, in a way that matters more or has more inherent value. So when we are all forced to stay at home with ourselves, not only does it remind me that all of those insecurities are completely not real and are in fact a delusion borne from a capitalistic-productivity-equals-artistic-worth-framework, but I also get time to actually enjoy and fine tune what I otherwise might have just thrown out into the ether desperately and prematurely in hopes to be current and up to date and ~with it~.
LG: Have you been working on writing any new tunes? Have you been involved in any other creative projects recently?
MC: When I was recording Phantom Limb, I wrote the majority of my next upcoming album, so while those songs don’t feel incredibly new, there is a ton of stuff I have yet to share and that I am so eager to scream to the world. It feels like some of the stuff I am most proud of making in my entire life.
But since I left for Berlin to study abroad last fall to when I came back to Seattle this January, I really hadn’t written anything new. I think I had been going through a lot of personal and immense change and hard growth that wasn’t particularly inspiring, it just sucked and was intense and necessary, but sometimes all that bad stuff is not something you can just make art out of. Plus I had to just do something totally different and invest and surrender to techno and being a gross city Eurotrash gremlin and let that out cathartically. But recently, I wrote my first super new song in what feels like ages, and I’m so happy. I was afraid maybe I’d forgotten how to do it, but it’s pouring out of me again and I feel like me again. I have also been working a bit back and forth with a friend from the project World Peace. We just keep sending clips back and forth and weaving our separate projects together a bit, which is something I’ve never done and I’m having a ton of fun, especially because our music is so different. Besides that, I have some plans to work with another good friend Izumi after having adored them the moment I moved here.
LG: How have you personally been dealing with the pandemic and the craziness that is 2020? What has your quarantine experience been like so far?
MC: I went home to Sacramento for a month and watched more TV than I had probably in my entire life. It was really good to see my family and siblings who I miss so much. But I came back to Seattle in April and since then have just been spending my days in a limbo of online school weirdness. But I’m so fortunate that I live with so many people who are all so unique, all of whom I feel are my best friends. So I definitely don’t get too bored:)
LG: What music have you been listening to during quarantine? What has been your go-to isolation album?
MC: Okay to be honest, when I begin to think of my next album and what it feels like inside of me, I make one single playlist with like hours and hours of songs on it and it’s the only thing I listen to for like a year. So I’m prone to listening to the same stuff perpetually forever and always, but I think I’ve always sort of been like that. It makes the feeling familiar. But since I’ve felt close to the sounds of my upcoming album for a long while now, I’ve actually pretty much been listening to what is my ~album 3~ inspo playlist, because I already feel that beast growing inside of me. I’m a planner.
Most of the artists on those playlists are the ones I listed above in regards to who I feel are my biggest inspirations. But right when quarantine started though I would pretty much only play Man Alive!, I would just go through the whole thing and then restart immediately. When I was in Sacramento, my family had a rule I could only play it with headphones because it was literally nonstop, that’s just how I consume things; I take a bath in them until I feel every single part of what was made. But other than that, I’ve been bumping Peter Campanelli’s Pesto Baby and crying a lot about it, Darci Phenix’s (my best bud from Sac) Juniper Street which is some of the best songwriting literally ever, and Francis Farmer’s Bruised Fruit which is SO expertly recorded and thought out, I am so lucky he is my friend and wants to record my upcoming album with me.
LG: Arethere any spring shows that you were particularly looking forward to attending that got cancelled?
MC: Pretty much all of them imaginable.
LG: How do you think the Seattle music scene is going to be like post-COVID?
MC: Hopefully, this can recenter us and remind us we’re all really really and truly in this together. It’s up to us to lift each other up and get each other on bills and spread the word and create community for those who need it most and for those whose lives rely on this art. Seattle seems like it is really good at that on a small scale, but once it gets to a little bit larger stage, it’s easy for people to forget where they came from, who supported them, and what should be at the forefront of our radars. I think shedding this cool guy persona and getting back to why this shit is so important and listening to/PROMOTING smaller artists who are making The Best stuff is something everyone could be reminded to do.
LG: In this funky era of social distancing, how do you think artists can support each other during these weird and difficult times? How do you think social media is facilitating and/or inhibiting connection within Seattle’s overall creative community?
MC: I think people’s ability to make what seemed like such an immediate switch to social media music promotion and shows was really amazing. However, it makes me feel a bit hopeless and dystopian and sci-fi in a weird way. That being said, trying to resist the change has only proven to be detrimental to me and kind has come back to kick me in the ass. Like, I should not be turning down opportunities just because livestreams kind of freak me out in how foreign and disconnected they can appear to be. I’m no better than them, and it’s important I think to accept things where they’re at instead of pretending they’re not happening.
That being said, I think everyone has been maneuvering with such grace and empathy and compassion for others in a way that I can really feel, and I hope that sticks around forever.

Fanfiction OST - The Golden Seal
OST for my fanfics? Hell yeah!
Ok so... yesterday while chatting with @luluvonv about giving music to fanfiction, or which music inspired me to write fanfiction, or which music I’d put if my fanfics were made into movies/animated series (yeah, dreaming is for free), I decided to make a post with the songs that we find suitable for my fanfics, or at least, for some sequences of them.
I must say most of them are gonna be from OST soundtracks/Two Steps From Hell because they are the music I usually listen to when I write, apart from the Lartis playlist I wrote some time ago. So I will be happy to hear your suggestions if you have one. These are very personal.
Of course this is just for fun. And I also encourage everyone who writes/reads fanfiction to do the same because I’m sure as hell everyone would love to listen author/reader’s suggestion to this, so feel free to go with the flow or just enjoy it!
The Golden Seal
Moving to Al-Fayoum
There is a sequence in this fanfics between the chapters The Amazon’s story and The Egyptologist, when Lara and Kurtis discover The Golden Seal changes and points a new location in their quest: Egypt, and particularly, the oasis of Al-Fayoum, where a Lux Veritatis fortress is buried under the sand. There Lara convinces her friend Jean Yves to organize a caravan and a dig team to uncover the ruins.
I always imagined El Dorado, by Two Steps From Hell, would be an amazing track to listen since the moment Lara finds out the new location to the moment where she, Kurtis and Jean Yves team arrives to the oasis.
1:33 Just imagine the line of trucks and jeeps advacing through the desert, crossing the sand, to the rythm of this music. And Kurtis motorbike, with Lara clinging to his waist, leading the line. Hey, why not.
youtube
Hey, I’m happing imagining it. In fact this sound could serve for any tomb raiding quest.
Passing Through The Booby Traps
I don’t dwell too much in these kind of descriptions because they bore me to hell, but i barely make reference to Lara sorting the booby traps that protect the Lux Veritatis stronghold in Al-Fayoum, as I said, barely mentioned in The Amazon’s Tomb.
I always though the instrumental piece Arabesque by Nightwish would be the perfect soundtrack for an amazing, graceful sequence of Lara avoiding swinging blades, spikes traps, booby traps in general, and making a final sprint to slide through a closing gap at the end of a deadly alley of traps.
I find specially good the title Arabesque because Lara Croft has a ballerina training and why not, all her gimmastics and movements are graceful, like dancing, like moving through the water, and not like a macho.
Just imagine her passing through spikes and blades with that gracefulness, an inch away from death... damn I miss her so much.
There is an Imaginaerum movie version of Arabesque, named a Crackling Sphere, which is even more epic that the original song. I recommend you to listen to it too because sometimes I think it’s more fitting to the sequence of the fanfic ;) Because the ending geeeeez so epic!
GODDAMMIT NIGHTWISH WHY ARE YOU SO GOOD
Introducing Meteora
The mystic valley of Meteora, in Greece, is the last location of the fanfic. I’ve always thought it would be beautiful to put some music to the sequence between Kurtis and Lara find out they have to go to Meteora, are intercepted by Nikos Kavafis and they leads them to the place in helicopter, then they witness for the first time the wide and beautiful valley with rock formations an the Orthodox monasterious on the top of them.
Merchant Prince by Two Steps from Hell would be my chosen music. And I’m even sure you can figure out in whch second the valley opens to your eyes ;)
Karel Defeated - The Kiss
Last fight of the fanfic is, of course, Kurtis battling and defeating Karel - this is not even a spoiler, every TRAOD sequel has it, even the official notes the game team had planned :))))
There is an impasse where we are not sure if Kurtis has died too because he has fallen to the void together with Karel, but he survives because of his Lux Verittis powers and, over all, because Lara has chosen him in The True Option choice before the Oracle.
I always thought Victory would be a nice music to illustrate the moment where lara finds out he’s alive, Karel has been definitely defeated, they finally kiss and ROLL CREDITS!!!  (I would love the idea of doing this fanfic as an animated series with chapters... there, I said it).
The chosen music is Victory. How not! Also, no romantic music for a kiss? Not this kiss. This kiss is a kiss of victory. This is a kiss with dirt, with blood and with passion. This is a kiss to savour the victory so bite her devoure her. So epic music for this kiss. YAS!
Yeah, again Two Steps From Hell. What can I do. I mostly listen to them when I write fanfiction.
There was a time I had more ideas, but I confess I forgot them. Maybe they weren’t that great if I can’t remember them. Also I’m aware this music sounds far more epic than the fanfic itself - but well, adaptation to screen could amend this, I guess.
Ok I wasted enough time of your life with this now. Maybe I can go no with the rest of my fics if you’d like to know.... and also if you’re a reader, know my fics and want to give your two cents on this... I’d be much more than honoured to know them :D
