#i really liked Johns Flash run
Feelings about Geoff Johns?
Hmm. That's a complicated one.
I would say that Johns really loves crazy comic style stories and it shows. He has a lot of love for lore and world building and telling deeply complex stories. He really fits the medium.
I will say that Johns isn't the best Flash writer (that's Waid) but his stuff is still really really good.
And honestly, even outside of Flash stuff I find that Johns typically writes some good stuff.
HOWEVER!
It's not all rainbows and puppies. I despise the way Johns writes women and portrays women in his stories. Even the way that the men think about women and react to them is gross and weird. It isn't too much of issue in the Flash (thankfully) because Wally and Linda were very committed by then but it's an issue in basically everything else the man writes.
(cept Stargirl, but that is dedicated to his deceased sister so it makes sense that he wouldn't sexualize her)
Uh, but yeah. Not a fan of Johns writing women. Take Three Jokers for example, where Johns basically had Jason head over heels for Babs, paired them up together, and then blamed Barbara for Jason killing people. Apparently if Barbara had just dated Jason then he would've been fine and it's her fault that Jason went on a killing spree because she didn't throw herself at Jason.
Or basically anything in his Titans run? Dear god, especially Bart. Poor Bart. Johns did a number on him.
Oh and that's another thing. Johns kinda doesn't care about previous characterization. Johns will write the characters how he wants to write them. Sometimes that's a good thing and sometimes (like with Bart) it's an awful terrible no good very bad thing.
Also he isn't great at events tbh? Johns has never really stuck the landing for me when it comes to big events. He is way better at smaller story arcs.
So yeah. I think his humor is stuck in the 80's, he needs to talk to an actual woman, everyone being horny doesn't equal good writing, he should stay away from events BUT when you get over all of that he's still a pretty good writer. Like... He's talented and he's better than most, he just needs to take a few HR seminars or something.
