✎ Chapter 15: Pernicious ✎
"NOONA! GET UP!"
You groaned as you trie snatching back your blanket from the culprit but to no avail, he threw it away from your reach. You sat up begrudgingly with a frown as you looked up at him.
"Chanyeol, what—"
"IT'S CHRISTMAS!" Chanyeol exclaimed as he pinched both of your cheeks, jumping like a kid. Your eyes widened as you remembered. It's just been a day after you got home. You totally forgot it's Christmas. "And it's snowing!"
"AH!"
With the loud cry from the window, the both of you turned to the source of the noise. Sehun got inside your room with snow on top of his raven hair, ruffling them off as he got in. Chanyeol just watched in surprise while you face-palmed yourself.
"What the fuck—"
"What's up, Yeol." Sehun cooly greeted his best friend as if he wasn't caught getting in your room. When he glanced at you and saw how you were glaring at him, he stood up straight and gulped. "Oh shit."
"Yes, Sehun. Oh shit! What the heck are you doing here?!" Chanyeol started freaking out as he walked towards Sehun with heavy steps. "Why are you creeping up into her room like that?! Are you a thief?! Yah! Look at me!"
You almost laughed out loud as you saw Sehun looking around your room as if it was his first time coming in here. Chanyeol kept on shouting at his best friend like he's a panicked mother hen even though he can see that his words are just gonna come out of Sehun's ears once it came in.
"Noona, why are you letting him?!" Chanyeol turned to you with wide eyes.
"Yah, yah. Noona doesn't have anything to do with this. I just like using her window. I forced her, okay?" Sehun said as he tapped Chanyeol's chest, shaking his head.
"Who forced who?" You questioned as you stood up and slightly stretched your arms. "I let him use my window when you two had projects before. Sehun's your best friend if you forgot." You chuckled as you walked towards your desk, making them move away as you opened your laptop.
"Okay then. I'll let you off the hook for now." Chanyeol squinted his eyes at Sehun but the other just shrugged his shoulders with a smirk. "Noona, he's smirking!"
"Let him be, Yeol. What the hell are you freaking out for?" You mumbled as you wore your glasses and looked at the calendar.
December 25
"3 months left." You whispered as you glanced at your laptop which just opened, revealing—
"SONG JOONGKI IS YOUR DESKTOP WALLPAPER?!"
"Yah, back off, man." Chanyeol pushed Sehun away as he got too close to you. Sehun frowned as he continued staring at the man on your laptop.
"A girl can dream, Sehun." You said as you laughed.
"You're working so early in the morning?! And it's Christmas, noona! Can you just have a day off?" Chanyeol said as he quickly sat on your swivel chair as if it can stop you from working.
"I'm just gonna brush my teeth and I'll start working." You turned your back on the two boys and opened your door. "I'll be done with that story anyway. I can rest as long as I want after."
With that, the door was left open and the bathroom door closed as you got in. Sehun and Chanyeol were left in your room with slight pouts on their mouths.
"She's really working in a holiday?" Sehun mumbled as he leaned his butt on your desk.
"I can't stop her from doing so. She's been working hard for this, I don't wanna ruin it." Chanyeol sighed as he leaned his back on the chair. "I just hope she's getting enough sleep."
"Oh, right. Mom and dad are coming back in a week from their business trip." Sehun said as he glanced at his own window. "I thought they're not coming back anymore."
"Yah, what kind of parents will they be if they leave their son in their new house forever?" Chanyeol slightly hit Sehun's arm with a frown, causing the other to smile. "They're doing it for you, bro. You know that."
"Yeah."
"Stop playing around, you two!" You squealed as the two 19 year old boys threw icing on each other's face. Your mother just giggled at the sight of them.
"Unnie, it'll be better if you just ignore those dorks and— YAH!" Chanhee tried calming you down but ended up joining the icing war when Chanyeol wiped a large amount of icing on her mouth. "YODA!"
"Who are you calling Yoda, little one?" Chanyeol teased as Chanhee ran after him. Sehun just stopped walking and moved beside you. You continued preparing for the cake when Sehun called you.
"Noona."
"Yes—"
Sadly, when you turned to him, your cheek was smudged with icing.
Sehun's grin was blinding and it annoyed you more. He ran before you could even react, knowing he just turned you beast mode on. You glanced at your mother, who's too focused on cooking her main dish, before walking fast after Sehun.
"OH MY GOODNESS! NOONA'S CHASING ME!" Sehun screamed like a girl as you just calmly walked after him. Chanyeol and Chanhee stopped as they watched you chase Sehun with a poker face.
"She's not even running." Chanyeol laughed as you just cornered Sehun on the wall, your hands full of icing. "Oh god, this won't end well."
"And Oh Sehun is down. EEENG." Chanhee said before making a buzzer sound with a giggle. Sehun's face was full of icing now, thanks to your skillful hands. You walked back to your place after washing your hands, continuing your work.
"How's the chase, bro?" Chanyeol greeted Sehun as he came back with a frown, which is almost not seen as his face was covered in sweet. "Was it fun?"
"Fuck you, Yeol."
"Bad words! Noona, Sehun said fuc—"
"Shut up!" Sehun wiped a bit of icing on his cheek before putting it in Chanyeol's mouth, earning a glare from the tower. "Looking good, man."
"Boys, will you please help me with these bowls?"
As the three heard your mother's voice, they instantly turned angels.
"Yes, mom!"
"Yes, Mrs. Park!"
You just chuckled at the sight of their dirty faces.
Christmas is so much livelier this year.

"Merry Christmas!"
As the Christmas music boomed from Chanyeol's little speaker, you all started your little party.
"Let's thank the Lord for His wonderful blessings first, shall we?" Your father started as the music volumed down. Your mother smiled at him. "This year has been the happiest one in my opinion. Not only because of the blessings we've got but also the problems that made us stronger." In Sung glanced at his children with a smile. "That's all thanks to the Lord who keeps on shining even in our darkest times."
"Well, we're not wealthy." Your mother added in. "We don't have a mansion or blocks of money. We don't have golden accessories or glimmering clothes." You slightly chuckled at the excitement in her voice as she mentioned clothes. She loves clothes like they're food. "But we have you, our children. This family is the only one that we'll sacrifice anything just to keep it." Her words triggered tears in your eyes but you chose to keep them in as long as possible. "That's why it'll really be painful if..."
Ga-in couldn't continue her speech as a sob came out of her mouth, making In Sung comfort her as he rubbed her back.
"I'll continue then." Chanhee spoke, making you all look at her. She smiled. "I want to thank God for giving me the best parents," She gestured the couple, hugging each other right now. "the worst brother," You chucked as Chanyeol complained. After silently arguing with her brother, Chanhee turned to you with tears in her eyes. "and of course, the most hardworking sister in the world."
"I can't thank God enough for blessing me with all of you. Even you, Sehun oppa, you're a cute neighbor and a gold one too!" You laughed as Chanhee slightly squealed as Sehun grinned at her. "Everyone is a blessing to me. May it be my enemy, friends, someone who I just bumped into, the janitor in school, the vendors on the street. They all matter to me whatever happens. That's because they're all creations of God."
"Someone's been studying her Religion subject well." Chanyeol commented, earning a hit on the shoulder from you. He cowered with a pout.
"I love you, guys. And I'm thankful God gave me all of you." Chanhee finished with a smile, making you hug her tight.
"We love you too, honey." Ga-in sniffed as she smiled at her.
"My turn!" Chanyeol excitedly said as he put his arm on your shoulder, making you growl in annoyance. "Calm down, noona."
"You're heavy for your info."
"Anyway, to start off, I wasn't really a good boy this year and I don't deserve any blessings from Him." Chanyeol started with a faltering grin, his voice making you look at him. His eyes were quickly watering, making you wonder why is he tearing up when he just spoke. "I've done a lot of things that disappointed mom and dad, things that will make noona sad, things that hurt someone, things that I really regret but I can't do anything about them now." You squeezed Chanyeol's waist in comfort as you felt him breathing hard, trying to calm himself before he broke down. "Even though I've done bad things, I'm still—still thankful that God continued giving me life and hope." Chanyeol glanced at you.
"And I'm still hoping."
Those big sad eyes that stared into yours were the ones that made you want to work harder until you fall on your knees.
You didn't want to see those again, that's why you wanted to give your all when you work.
Not only for Chanyeol but for your family.
You wiped Chanyeol's tears before facing your family and Sehun, who just quietly watched.
"Uhm." You awkwardly cleared your throat, trying to make a little noise before speaking. "Yeah. You've probably said the same things in some ways and I'll say the same." You smiled as you felt Chanyeol's grip on your shoulder.
"This family is the one who gave me strength to write, to inspire other people, to fight for everyday," You noticed that Chanhee was covering her face already as she silently cried. "to teach others about what I've learned in life, to wake up every morning and have the motivation to work harder than ever." You smiled as your father looked at you with sad eyes. "I'm grateful to God that in these 25 years that I've been living in this world, I've learned a million of lessons I would probably take until I die." You almost cringed as you said the word.
"He didn't give us wealth, yes. Some of us aren't that smart like me." You glanced at the tall boy beside you, who just nodded in agreement, probably too tired to argue with you. You chuckled. "I'm not that good-looking, yes." You laughed as you heard Sehun snicker at Chanyeol's side. "But all the physical things in life wouldn't matter once you turn into dust and get back to Him. That's why I'm still thankful whatever happens, I know everything is in His Will."
"Amen." Chanyeol mumbled as he hugged you from your side and kissed the top of your head.
"What about you, Sehun-ssi?" Your father suddenly asked the boy, startling him as he faced him. "You don't want to thank for anything?"
Sehun glanced around him and saw all of you were staring at him in expectation. He cleared his throat, avoiding your eyes at all costs.
"W-Well, I haven't really done this with my family, so it's kind of new to me." Sehun scratched the back of his head as Chanyeol ruffled his hair.
"Just say what you want to thank for, bro! Like thank you for giving me this face and this body—"
"Yeol." You called in a stern voice, making him shut up. You turned to Sehun with a grin. "Continue."
"U-Uhm, I thank God for blessing me with hardworking parents." Sehun nodded as if he's convincing himself. But he really understood why his parents are working this hard, it's all for him. "I know that they might neglect me often and leave me behind alone but I know they love me whatever they do." You smiled as Sehun spoke like a child, biting his lower lip in perturbation. "And I understand that. Because they're the only people that I have."
"Yah! You have me!" Chanyeol butted in like the noisy best friend he is, making Sehun smile.
"You have me, Bora and Soyu too, oppa!" Chanhee squealed as she smiled at him.
"You have this family as your own too, Sehun-ah. You're always welcome here." You said with a smile. Sehun couldn't be happier as he felt accepted and warm inside.
He's not alone anymore.
Gifts were received and given, foods and drinks were shared, songs were sung, smiles were plastered on your faces as you chatted with everyone.
Chanyeol was like the MC, master of the ceremony, in this dinner. Talking here, talking there, laughing here and there. You even wonder if he's like this in school. Your parents looked happier than most of your dinners together. Chanhee kept on talking to Sehun, asking what he likes or dislikes as if he's a celebrity in an interview. You just watched as all of them interacted with a smile.
"I'll just go get something upstairs." You said loudly as the music started again. Your mother nodded before continuing chatting with your father.
You walked upstairs and went to your room, not noticing the boy following you.
You opened your door and quickly went to your desk, pulling your drawer open.
"What are you doing, noona?"
You almost shouted in shock as you heard Sehun's voice. You brought your fist on your chest again before glaring at the boy.
"What the hell, Sehun-ah." You mumbled as you hesitated bringing out the paper bag out.
"You didn't get anything from me." Sehun whined as he walked towards you. Your hand gripped on the paper bag inside the drawer.
"I was getting it—"
"Let me see!" Sehun turned excited and jumpy all of a sudden. You quickly took the medium-sized paper bag and put it on your back. "Yah, noona. Give it to me."
"You're being annoying, so I won't."
Sehun kept on walking forward until you hit your back on the window. You glanced at the window and saw the full moon peeking through the thin clouds while the stars shone bright on the dark sky. You watched in awe, lips parting as you breathed out a sigh.
"Wah, the snow's falling beautifully." You mumbled as you watched how the snow gets blown over by the wind.
Sehun was watching a different scene though.
He was watching how your lips parted while you look at the night sky and observe the snow outside. He was thinking how someone can be so majestic and at the same time, pernicious.
You smiled as you remembered your gift for Sehun. You turned around to speak when your voice suddenly disappeared, seeing how Sehun stared at you as if capturing this moment with his eyes.
"W-Why are you staring at me like that?" You slightly laughed to break the awkward silence. "Here's your gift then." You shoved the cute paper bag on his chest, letting his arms slowly wrapped themselves on it securely. "Uhm." You smack your lips nervously as you scratched your neck, watching Sehun slowly open it.
"Actually, I haven't bought your gift outside." You nipped your nails slightly as Sehun pulled out your gift. "It's mine actually."
"It's cute." Sehun whispered as he put down the paper bag and ran his fingers around the white stuff toy you usually hug.
"Are you even listening to me?" You laughed as you saw how Sehun looked so immersed with the toy. He looked back at you with the brightest smile you have ever seen from him.
"Thank you, noona. I love it."
You can hear the sincerity and happiness in his voice, making you smile back at him.
"I'm glad then. You can hug that whenever you're lonely or something." You gestured the puppy toy that he's holding. "I've had that since I was 10, so you better keep it and take care of it."
"Yes, noona. I will take a good care of it!" Sehun saluted like a soldier and gently put the toy back inside the paper bag. "I'll give you my gifts then."
"Gifts?" You giggled as Sehun shoved his hand on his pocket. "What are your gifts then?"
"Close your eyes first!"
You complied in the end even though you argued with him for a little while. You waited for a few seconds but you were an impatient person, so you opened your eyes just to see Sehun so close to your face.
"YAH!" You both exclaimed in surprise.
"Why did you open your eyes?! You'll ruin my surprise!"
"Why are you too close then?!"
"Just close your eyes, noona. Come on, trust me."
You grunted in protest but closed your eyes even though you hesitated a little as you felt Sehun's hot breath fanned your face.
"Can you stop breathing for a moment, Sehun?"
"Just keep quiet, noona, and we'll be done."
You felt a cold material collided around your collarbones and neck, Sehun's hands slightly hovering over your neck, clasping the lock behind it.
A necklace.
"You should've just given it to me—" You opened your eyes as you spoke, only to be shushed by Sehun's lips on your forehead.
You can see how his neck slightly stretched as he leaned on your forehead. He rested his lips there for a while, taking his time as his arms dropped on your waist.
"S-Sehun-ah?"
"Merry Christmas, noona."
Your cheeks flushed as he stared into your eyes before pulling away.
"Let's go. Chanyeol's probably freaking out right now." Sehun laughed as he remembered his best friend downstairs.
As Sehun went out, you were left inside your room with your fingers around the pendant on your necklace. You slightly peeked at it and just saw a heart with an arrow pierced through it. You tilted your head before shaking it.
"Thanks, Sehun." You mumbled to yourself as you walked out of the room.
"Omo! Yeoreum-ah! Hurry, come here!"
As you got down the stairs, you heard your mother call you. You glanced at her and saw that she was on the phone. Your eyebrows furrowed as you walked towards her. Chanyeol winked at you while Chanhee just squealed.
What the hell?
"Someone wants to greet you!" Ga-in told you excitedly as she gave you her phone. You took it reluctantly, seeing how your family reacts. Even your father was grinning teasingly. Sehun was the only one who was not smiling.
Who could it be?
"Yeoboseyo?" You answered as you got the phone. There was a short pause before he spoke.
"Merry Christmas, baby girl."
Baby girl?! Only one person calls me that horrible nickname!
"Kookie?! Omo." Your eyes widened as you heard Chanyeol laugh.
"Missed me?"
"Of course I missed you!"
"I'll come back for you then."
You glanced at your mother with unbelieving eyes and she just nodded.
"You're coming back?!"
"What? You don't want me to?"
"No, of course I want you to!"
"Good. See you soon then?"
You smiled, reminiscing your childhood memories with him.
"See you soon."
Oh, it really would be a fun holiday.
Not for someone though.
