After the Lantern festival at Valtoria, Madeleine returns to Karlingford to start arranging her stage of the Charity Tour, and questions Adelaide about her recent absence from Cordonia. Both Liam and Olivia are under pressure.

16 Under Pressure

The lantern festival had been a roaring success, and the Valtorian orphanage had gained some much needed funds. Liam’s popularity had increased and he had been seen publicly with Olivia. It made up somewhat for the dilemma with Anton, but there was still an ugly undercurrent. At Bastien’s suggestion, he had made tentative enquiries as to where he could go in the case of having to go into exile. Monaco was open to receiving him, but he found the country extravagant and claustrophobic. He thought perhaps one of the smaller neighbouring countries might be amenable. He did not like the pompous King Bradshaw of Auvernal, and Queen Amalas of Monterisso was friendly, but he thought she might propose more than just a friendly place to stay, and could expect a marriage agreement as they were of a similar age and both single. Greece, on the other hand, was a possibility and he wondered if he could retreat to the United States or to the United Kingdom.

If he had to take the option of exile, what would that mean for Olivia? She did not want to leave her Duchy leaderless, but equally had no desire to be Queen to Anton Severus. He had sent requests for her to visit him at his place of detention, all of which she turned down. Lucretia, after cooperating with Lewis and Damien, refused to say anything else. Her position was complicated. Perhaps if Anton gained the throne, she could claim that hiring the gunman had been in an attempt to aid his claim. On the other hand, it certainly put a dent in his plans and he had had to retreat and regroup. It was anyone’s guess how he might react if he discovered she had hired the gunman in the cathedral.

Liam and Olivia, Drake and Riley, Bastien and Sophia and Lady Hana Lee stayed at Valtoria for another few days. The next stop on the charity tour was Portaviera, home of Lady Penelope’s family. The duchy had a substantial coastline and had recently suffered from damage after a bad storm with strong winds. The charity event was to be a fashion show.

‘So the King told me you can tell your wishes after you’ve lost sight of your lantern’ Sophia told Bastien over breakfast. He raised an eyebrow at her

‘I’m not risking it’ he replied ‘You know I keep many secrets’

‘But this is just a small one, just a bit of fun’ she wheedled. He shook his head

‘It’s a matter of principle’ he said ‘and much as you are itching to tell me, I suggest you keep yours secret too’ Sophia sighed. She had hoped Bastien would share what he wanted for his future, though she was pretty sure it involved her, as he often told her. She ramped up her game by slipping off her shoe and stretching her leg out to rub his ankle with her bare toes, despite the fact that today they were taking breakfast in the dining room rather than in their quarters. For a change, Sophia had been the first one to wake, though not by much, as Bastien woke at any noise in daylight hours. They had made love leisurely and made the decision to go down to the dining room before they did so again. He glared at her

‘Stop trying, Sophia, I have my work head on’ He finished his coffee and got up. ‘Don’t wait at lunch, I’ll probably be busy’ Sophia rolled her eyes, knowing he was immovable, and stood to fetch another round of toast.

‘I’m sorry you’re feeling queasy’ Liam said to Olivia as she sat drinking black coffee looking out of the window. They were having breakfast privately, and he had an appointment soon with Bastien to go over the travel plans for the following day. Olivia made a face.

‘You’d almost call it morning sickness’ she said in an irritated tone. Liam stopped chewing and stared at her.

‘How reliable are those tests?’ he asked. She looked back at him sharply.

‘Pretty much bang on’ she replied ‘Although my monthly was rather light’

‘Can you get hold of another one?’ Liam asked. He saw her already pale face go a little whiter.

‘That might be tricky’ she replied ‘We’re only just letting ourselves be seen in public. If anyone finds out I’m taking pregnancy tests it would be unsettling to say the least’ The matter of her betrothal to Anton hung in the air between them, unspoken.

‘I’m sure if we ask, someone could help get one – perhaps Lady Hana, or Riley – or Sophia’ he said.

‘Hana’s not even dating’ she pointed out ‘I couldn’t be pregnant, surely’

‘Well, we are trying, and I expect few tests are one hundred per cent reliable’ Liam smiled ‘It would at least put your mind at rest, and if you really are expecting – well I promise you I will stand by you and do my very best to make things as easy as I can’

‘If I am, and Anton finds out…’ she started. She slammed her coffee cup onto the table and balled her fists by her sides ‘Bastard, why does everything have to be so complicated?’ Liam got up and went to her, putting a reassuring hand on her shoulder. He hesitated to hold her, knowing her independent and fiery nature.

‘I’m here for you, Livvy’ he said assuringly. ‘We’ll cope, whatever happens’

Anton had nobody to talk over his thoughts with that he trusted, so he muttered to himself in the apartment in the imposing mansion that looked out over the sea. The sky was a dull grey, and scudding waves spread white patterns across the water.

‘Think, why is the upstart King so convinced he can succeed in keeping his title?’ he mused. ‘If I was in his position I’d eliminate the opposition. Either he’s weak, or he’s put me here to dispose of me out of sight’ He glowered over the racing white horses beyond the sheer cliffs. ‘If he doesn’t intend to get rid of me, he must either have proof that my claim is false, or will forge evidence. Even if he does refute it, he still needs an heir.’ He ran his fingers through his black hair ‘Who would he attempt to impregnate?’

His mind worked at the problem and he continued in silence, wondering if the apartment was bugged. That bitch American was one candidate, but would Cordonia accept a common foreigner? He didn’t think so. Lady Madeleine had been a strong contender, and he had seen to it that her mother had met an untimely end in Monaco. He was unaware that attempt had failed, so his train of thought went on. Would the King understand that was a warning that he had contacts that were dangerously close to him? Presumably Madeleine would be too grief stricken to pursue her ambition to be Queen by Liam’s side.

That left Olivia. He smiled at the thought that he had already thwarted any ideas Liam might have of making her his Queen. Liam had nowhere to go to – he was clutching at straws and would fail, and it would not be long before the country welcomed King Anton of house Severus. He went back to his original thought that his life could be in danger. He made a note to his lawyer to demand a larger entourage befitting his status. He wanted his own bodyguard and security team, and he knew where to recruit them. The throne was almost in his grasp.

Adelaide and Madeleine had gone from Valtoria to her father’s manor at Karlington, and he had begrudgingly returned from England in the middle of the English racing season to attend a council meeting concerning Anton’s claim. They were next on the charity tour after Portaviera, and there was much planning and preparation to do for the childrens’ cancer department in Krona’s hospital, which needed funding for specialist nurses. Unusually they were hosting a polo match, which was usually held in Portaviera, but due to the storm damage they had called it off in favour of the fashion show.

‘Bloody charity causes’ he grumbled ‘I don’t know why they think they can come begging to their betters. They should manage their affairs more efficiently’

‘We’ll garner popular opinion if we give more support to childhood cancer’ Madeleine pointed out, but her father snorted in disgust.

‘Who cares about that?’ he snapped ‘As long as the commoners pay their taxes and don’t cause any trouble I couldn’t give a fig what they think. What counts is keeping up the high standards the King and other nobles expect from our Duchy’ Madeleine sighed and passed her hand over her forehead.

‘Just leave it to me, father’ she said. He looked at her pointedly

‘I suppose it might make that whippersnapper think twice about rejecting you as his suitor’ he said thoughtfully ‘After all, he’s still not chosen anyone yet, and you’re good breeding stock’ Madeleine pursed her lips. She knew it was futile to engage him when he was in a mood like this, and let the sting of his words bounce off her, but unusually Adelaide sprang to her defence.

‘She’s not a farm animal, Geoffrey’ she pointed out ‘Maddy’s more than just a means to your delusions of grandeur.’

‘Delusions?’ her father spat ‘I am certainly not deluded about the quality of my bloodline. I suppose I should be glad you spat out female progeny before your ovaries gave up the ghost’ Madeleine saw the tears spring to her mother’s eyes. She knew tonight she would drown her sorrow in alcohol – perhaps she’d be raiding the drinks cabinet sooner than that. That left her to make all the arrangements as usual. Never mind, she told herself, at least that was something she was good at. Her father turned on his heel to leave the room.

‘I’m off to the golf course’ he said over his shoulder ‘Don’t bother setting dinner for me, I’ll eat at the club’ Adelaide slumped.

‘I’m so sorry Maddy, your father shouldn’t talk about you like that. I know you blame me for not standing up for you – for making you think you were only fit for one thing. But what else could I do? You’re my only child’ she stepped up to her and reached out as if to touch her cheek, but her hand fell away. ‘I only want you to be happy’

‘I don’t think you have much control over that’ Madelaine sniffed. ‘Now, are you going to hit the bottle, or help me with the garden party after the polo match?’

Later that evening at Karlingford, her father had returned late and gone straight to his room. He and Adelaide had separate bedrooms, and that had been the case for as long as Madeleine could recall. She remembered running into her mother’s bedroom once in the morning as a child when her father was away, only to find her with a man she didn’t know. After that, her mother’s door remained locked, and the young girl had to wait for her nanny to come and fetch her for breakfast. She never went into her father’s room as he disliked her ‘fawning’ on him as he put it.

Adelaide had managed to abstain from drinking before the evening meal, at which only she and Madeleine sat at the long table in the grand dining room. Her father insist that they eat there when he was resident, even if he was dining elsewhere himself. She watched her mother gulp down her first glass, waving at the serving staff just to leave the bottle in front of her rather than hover to fill her glass. She appeared to spend more time drinking than eating, and Madeleine sipped at her mineral water as she ate. The sound of their cutlery on the fine china plates made a sharp clattering sound that echoed round the huge room.

‘Darling you should eat more’ Adelaide remarked ‘You’re too thin. Men like a little meat on the bones you know, don’t model yourself on all those skinny models’ Madeleine stiffened

‘I’d rather be appraised for something other than my physical appearance, mother’ she said curtly. Adelaide waved her glass in the air.

‘I know that appearances shouldn’t matter, sweetie, but it helps.’ She leaned toward her, elbows on the table – a terrible faux pas her father would have frowned at. ‘You’ve always been well turned out – neat, tidy, modest, and you dress impeccably’ Madelaine sighed as the last of the dishes were cleared – the meal had ended with fresh fruit and sorbet, a favourite of her mothers which she tolerated. Adelaide got up unsteadily and picked up the wine bottle and her now empty glass.

‘Time for the staff to lock up’ she announced ‘Your father’s in his room so I suppose that’s it for the night’ Madeleine nodded and gestured to the serving staff to follow instructions. She saw that now might be a good time to question her mother about her recent absence.

‘Shall we go into the lounge, mother?’ she asked innocently ‘You can look over the garden plans and see what you think of the marquee arrangements.’ Adelaide smiled brightly – the idea of spending time with her daughter obviously appealed to her.

‘Okay darling, let’s do that’ she replied. Madeleine nodded to the staff

‘Ask Maria to fetch the binder from my study would you?’ she asked. She didn’t want to lose sight of her mother in case she forgot where she was going in her alcoholic daze. She rose and went to her, gently taking her elbow and steering her in the right direction. Her mother smiled fondly and patted her hand.

‘You always were such a good child, Maddy’ she rambled ‘I know your father was strict with you, but I never had to say a cross word to you, darling’ Madeleine cringed, remembering drunken rants and times when her father scolded or disciplined her and her mother stood by. It took only moments to get to the huge lounge, high ceilinged, with windows looking out over the lawns and tasteful vintage décor – vintage in the sense that much of the furniture was antique and priceless.

Adelaide had difficulty focussing on the plans her daughter showed her, but she wasn’t worried about that. She continued to drink the contents of the wine bottle she had brought with her.

‘Mother, can’t you tell me what happened when you were away?’ she asked ‘I was worried about you, you know’ Her mother squinted at her.

‘What happened?’ she queried, and screwed her face up as if she was having trouble remembering. ‘Oh, well – that nice young man with Bas – Bastien’ she was having difficulty saying his name and hiccupped slightly ‘He said he’d take care of everything. I didn’t want to press charges, though he said I should’ here she looked suddenly melancholy ‘I didn’t want you to be ashamed of me’ She swayed slightly despite being seated on the antique chaise longue next to the marble fireplace.

‘Press charges? What for?’ Madeleine asked as her mother tipped her glass to her lips and emptied it. She put it back down on the table with a thump.

‘You know’ she slurred ‘for trying to bump me off’ Madeleine felt her breath catch.

‘Someone tried to kill you?’ she asked, aghast ‘How – why?’

‘s’not important’ Adelaide asserted ‘What is important is that I’m back home and they caught up with them – and it turns out the Greek police want them anyway, so when the Guard have finished with them they’ll hand them over’ she smiled and spread her hands out ‘Problem solved’ She tipped the bottle upside down, squinting at it. ‘Empty’ she said with regret ‘Time for bed’

‘But mother…’ Madeleine started, but she realised she would get nothing more from her as she put the bottle and glass down, and got up.

‘Night night, sweetie, don’t let the bed bugs bite’ she slurred, and teetered off out of the room. Madeleine was left alone with her thoughts. Tomorrow all three of them would go to Portaviera for the fashion show, and she had questions. She had also seen the stranger with Bastien at the Lantern festival, and wondered who he was and what part he had in her mother’s trip to the hospital in whatever godforsaken country she had visited. She needed information, and she knew where she could get it.

‘What do you mean, all of them?’ Penelope’s voice was shrill. She had been so excited to host the fashion show, and now it was all falling apart in front of her eyes. The models had arrived together, hired from a modelling agency, and as soon as they arrived at their hotel one by one they had fallen sick, and the highly contagious norovirus stomach bug had been diagnosed. Their hotel had been isolated and all guests quarantined to prevent the spread any further. Luckily the clothes had been transported separately and the stylists, dressers and designers were in other accommodation and were unaffected.

‘I’m sorry Miss Ebrim’ the event organiser said ‘We don’t have anyone to model the clothes’ The duchess felt her stomach go into knots and her knees go weak

‘What can we do?’ she squeaked ‘Everything’s set up, the guests will be arriving in a few hours’

‘Now then Penny, stay calm’ her mother soothed ‘We can ask if any of the staff would consider helping. I’m sure some of them are the right size’

‘But they’re not professionals, mother’ she croaked ‘Everything’s ruined’

‘Nonsense’ Emmeline replied ‘It will be different – novel. Everyone will think how intriguing it is, especially if we recruit one or two lesser nobles. Why, I’m sure Lady Hana or Kiara would help out’ Penelope moaned and passed her hand over her forehead.

‘We need men to model some of the lines’ she said faintly ‘How are we going to organise it all?’

‘I’ll get onto my housekeeper’ her mother said ‘We still have time to pull this all together’

Clear The Area - Chapter Six

Warning: Mild language

Summary: Sarah’s parents make a visit, and not everyone is happy with Sarah’s choices.

Note: Sorry this took a while to get out.

CHAPTER SIX

There’s a couple of things you should probably know about Jocelyn and Noah Bernette.

The first is that they are salt-of-the-Earth people. They are friendly to anyone, heavily involved in their community, and they make regular donations to a charity that provides home improvements to families so they can live comfortably with a disability. They once spent a summer volunteering with Habitat For Humanity and have fostered approximately 18 cats and dogs over the past seven and a half years. Jocelyn regularly bakes cakes for their neighbours and Noah is obsessed with his garden and tending to the Norwegian Purple Heather he paid a fortune to have shipped over from Bergen. Politically, they are liberal in practically every sense of the word and up to speed with the latest democratic events. Seriously, you would have to work extra hard to trip them up if you wanted to hold any kind of debate with them.

Sadly, the Bernettes could not have children biologically for one reason or another. Jocelyn in particular struggled with that knowledge. She figured at the age of 34, with most of her friends now mothers and fathers themselves, a child was the obvious piece missing from their puzzle. Professionally, they were both pretty much at the top of their respective trees and they had no mortgage to speak of so naturally the only thing left to accomplish was raising a child. So, thereafter, followed several years of testing, waiting, waiting some more, then more testing, but the doctors couldn’t fathom why it just didn’t want to happen for them. There didn’t appear to be anything medically wrong with either of them. It was nature, they said, as though that was supposed to be some kind of comfort. Eventually, when Jocelyn reached her 40th birthday, she and Noah decided it wasn’t meant to be and opted to try a different route, though it wasn’t much easier being told implicitly that they were now too old to adopt a baby.

Which leads to the other thing you should probably know about them: they don’t like to be reminded that Sarah is adopted. It suits them just fine to block out the first 12 years or so before they met. It’s not to say they completely disregard her past of that they want to forget they couldn’t have children, it was more that on some psychological level Sarah had long since given up trying to understand, they felt more like a real family if they could continue to believe that they had always been this way, that it was fate they would find each other and live happily ever after.

Jocelyn wanted to experience sleepless nights from a crying baby wanting to be fed but instead she learned to deal with sleepless nights waiting to see if their runaway child was going to come home before four in the morning. They would argue about boyfriends they didn’t trust or buying a car they didn’t think she would look after. Jocelyn would later attempt to make the move from mother to best friend as soon as Sarah moved away to college, always planning meet-ups or sending her cut-outs in the post about make-up thinking she would be interested in them and they could perhaps bond over shared hobbies. She could finally empathise with her friends and neighbours about whether their children were surviving their studies. All stereotypical parental concerns and she embraced each and every one of them.

Noah on the other hand, a few years older than Jocelyn, was definitely calmer about the whole thing. He was glad they chose this option for them both because he reasoned he might be too long in the tooth to start changing nappies or teach another human being how to ride a bike given that he didn’t know how to do so himself. Instead, they could take what they had, what they both worked so hard to achieve, and help someone who hadn’t had the best start in life. Isn’t that they best way of helping your community?

Lisa once joked that she learned more about Sarah from one dinner with her folks than she had learned from Sarah herself over the course of knowing her for six months. But she couldn’t understand why Sarah had a particular desire to create a distance between herself and them, and from her seemingly healthy teenage years in a quaint town in Maine, a far cry from Michigan in more ways than one. Shanna didn’t understand either but Sarah wasn’t always forthcoming about her rationale even after knowing for as long as she did.

Sarah learned early on that it was best not to talk about her birth family. She was thankful to have Noah and Jocelyn steering her at a time when it would have been all too easy for her to go off the rails. Of course, she was thankful; who wouldn’t be, living that kind of comfortable life. She didn’t want to see ungrateful. It just never really settled within her. She always felt a little out of place and struggled to adjust to the wealth of positive emotions, love, and a somewhat material wellbeing she hadn’t experienced before. She provided the Bernettes with their missing piece and they wanted to reward her for that but she in turn felt like something was missing from her own identity and that feeling only grew as she got older. Increasingly, she felt like who was as a Bernette was not entirely in line with who she felt she was in the baseline of her DNA. At times she felt like she was merely living to someone else’s expectations so moving to Boston was something akin to therapy.

“And he just gave you this?!”

Jocelyn was stood by the wardrobe in Sarah’s bedroom. She usually did this under the pretence of casually catching up on life and everything else but realistically, Sarah knew she just wanted to snoop around in the hope of discovering hints of a boyfriend she’d been keeping to herself. Shanna was currently sat on Sarah’s bed, one leg tucked underneath and enjoying their relationship from a distance. She was wondering when she’d bring up Prince Greg as she’d dubbed him on account of his floppy hair. She felt like she knew more of Sarah when she was around her own family. It was kind of fascinating to see.

Jocelyn held the dress up in front of her, taking it in, gobsmacked. Sarah had never seen Jocelyn this excited before. To the untrained eye, it was just a simple black mini-dress; unclingy with loose full-length sleeves and a frilly detail around the hem. There was a silver thread woven into the stitching that caught the light if you were stood the right way. Chris was right; it was cute. Shanna suggested wearing it with black tights and those heeled boots that were her go-to date footwear. Her only go-to date footwear, Audrey would remind her whenever she managed to drag her into town for some shopping. Being overtly dressed-up wasn’t something Sarah was easily comfortable with and Chris knew this, so simple was definitely the way to go.

“Not exactly. It’s a loan. I’ll have to give it back afterwards.” Sarah pressed.

She was ready to get to the exhibition centre before it closed but Jocelyn didn’t seem in any particular rush. Her knowing Chris Evans was perhaps the thing Jocelyn was most proud of in Sarah’s life and she always managed to work in a conversation or two whenever she visited. Rather than be irritated by it, Sarah actually found it rather amusing. Chris seemed to have a sixth sense for guessing when Jocelyn was trying her patience, though, and played up to her a little bit so as to give Sarah a break. She once lost her asking him questions about the Academy Awards for nearly an hour. The amount of beer she had to buy him afterwards as a ‘thank you’ nearly bankrupted her.

“Well, you’ll have to make sure your hair and make-up matches. You can’t wear a dress like this with a ponytail.” She was speaking in what she assumed was a helpful tone. It was a good job she couldn’t see the face Sarah was pulling right now.

“Oh, between us all I’m sure we’ll be able to figure it out. I’ll have to do the same thing, too.” Shan was trying her best to act nonchalant in an effort to support her best friend. “I mean, it’s not often any of us get the chance to get dressed these days, really.”

“How lovely. You can borrow my emerald earrings if you like? They’ll bring out your eyes.” Jocelyn was more than a little eager now, no doubt buzzing at the thought of having her personal jewellery plastered all over Instagram. She zipped up the dress bad and placed it carefully inside the wardrobe while Sarah and Shan just smiled at each other knowingly.

As Jocelyn moved to the bathroom to wash her hands, they left the bedroom opting for the relative safety of the living room where Noah had set up camp alongside Chris and ESPN. He was a keen follower of most sports with golf a particular favourite. He was saving up for tickets to the PGA tour next year as a retirement gift to himself. Sarah knew Jocelyn wasn’t going with him but couldn’t be entirely sure he hadn’t invited Chris along in her place.

“What’s she mithering you about this time?” Noah asked, eyes glued to the TV screen. He didn’t get much time to sit and be still watching television at home so visiting his daughter was even more of a treat. If Sarah could survive being the sole focus of Jocelyn’s attention for hours on end, he would have happily left them to it for the afternoon and set up camp with Chris and a glass of Talisker.

“Nothing much, it’s OK. Are you ready to go yet? It’ll take about 20mins to walk there,” Sarah was hinting as heavily as she could now, short of jingling her keys in front of their faces likes they were cats.

“Sure, go grab your mom and we’ll head out. Have you had thoughts about dinner yet? Chris, would you like to join us?”

“Well, I was quite keen on seeing the exhibition myself actually but I’d hate cause you guys any problems with my being there.” He tried to casually shrug it off in a look she’d seen all too often lately.

“I’m sure we can manage,” Noah managed to tear himself away from the TV screen for his beloved Chris. “Is it a ball cap situation or more of a through-the-backdoor type of thing? I’ve never had to sneak around before. Could be fun?”

Sarah appreciated Noah’s casualness and evidently, judging by the grin spread across his face in that moment, so did Chris. He turned to look over the back of the couch at Sarah, silently asking her permission.

“Well, I did get a 4th ticket in case you or Scott fancied coming...” she offered. “I mean, I’m fine if you are?”

Chris gave her a grateful smile. “Give me two minutes and I’ll be right with you.”

For this time of day, the gallery was surprisingly busy but mainly full of people Sarah figured were die-hard fanatics of his art and who probably wouldn’t recognise Chris if he appeared in front of them dressed in his full Captain America get-up waving the American flag. As they passed by the smiling security guard. Noah wondered quietly to Sarah what the Venn diagram of McCurry aficionados crossed with Marvel fans would realistically look like. Given his nerdiness for all things mathematical, no doubt he’d have an answer figured out for them by the time they reached the Vietnam display two halls away.

“...and this was the photograph that started the Live Aid charity.” Jocelyn stopped in front of a small photograph, no larger than one you’d have in a frame at home yet unmistakeable on the wall alongside dozens of other images, Sharbat’s eyes piercing your soul. Walking slightly ahead of them, she’d somehow managed to link arms with Chris and was now acting as their defacto tour guide, explaining each piece to him in turn as though he’d never seen them before. Anyone who knew Chris properly would know he greatly enjoyed photography and was well read on the latest pieces. Nevertheless, he was still polite and nodded along as she enthusiastically spoke of the lens McCurry used to achieve the effects of his art.

As they moved through to the third and final hall space, things had gotten noticeable quieter as more people were filtering out. Noah and Jocelyn were deep in conversation with a local art student who had stopped to sketch a couple of pieces, and Chris seemed far more relaxed and happy walking around without his NASA cap on. No on had paid him any attention all afternoon, it must have been a nice change of pace for him.

Sarah lost track of how long she had been staring at a larger canvas piece of a bridge with a giant concrete hand underneath holding the structure up. The place was unknown and the image was photographed from high up, possible from a plane or helicopter. It was oddly serene even if the bridge had become overgrown with reeds and dirt.

“I think it’s meant to represent Mother Nature’s battle against Man,” Chris spoke quietly as he approached her from behind, standing to one side as she continued to stare at the image.

“That’s an interesting theory. Where did you read that?”

“i happen to have an ongoing subscription with National Geographic.” Chris said, comically smoothing his beard in contemplation. Sarah almost believed him until she registered what he had said. Chris clocked her side-eying him. “Joss told me to tell you when she saw you looking at it.”

She smiled at him before turning back to the wall. “I think I want to visit this place one day. It’s like the complete opposite of Boston.” she mused.

“You’d never leave Boston. It’s in your DNA now. You’re officially one of us.”

“That’s....that sounds vaguely threatening.”

“You have leprechaun pyjamas and you’ve been drunk at Fenway. You pretty much tick all of the boxes.” Chris smirked and turned to walk away.

“How do you know I have those pyjamas?” Sarah followed behind him.

“I didn’t. You just told me.” Sarah punched him in the arm and Chris pretended to wince.

Noah had somehow managed to loop back around the bookshop from the start to purchase a couple of prints and a biography before joining them as they headed towards the exit. The rain had started getting a little heavier during the time they had been inside and Sarah chastised herself for ignoring Jocelyn’s advice to bring an umbrella with her. If there was one thing you could guarantee in even the nicest of Summers, it’s that Jocelyn Bernette always, ALWAYS, carried an umbrella in her handbag. Also, one of those waterproof macs that rolled up to the size of a dollar bill but she couldn’t convince anybody that they were a good idea.

As they gathered outside, Sarah gently pulled Chris back by his elbow. “Hey, there’s no pressure on staying for dinner if you’d rather head out or whatever. I think they were keen on you stopping out with us but I’m happy to make an excuse if you’d rather not.”

“What? No, it’s totally fine. I really like your folks. They’re fun and interesting.” Chris noticed Sarah’s look of skepticism. “Seriously, you need to chill. I’m having a good time. It’s nice doing normal things for a change.”

“In that case, I’ll let them know you’re up for a bike ride tomorrow. Dad wants to rent a tandem.”

“Are you....Are you being serious?” Sarah nodded. “Wow, they really go all out, huh? What are you gonna do while they do that?”

“No idea. Probably hold their bags.”

Chris laughed. “Man, those two are cute. I’d kill to be that dorky when I’m their age. You’re so lucky.”

Sarah considered his point for a moment, looking at Jocelyn waving her flip phone up in the air trying to get a signal. She’d lost track of the number of times she’d tried to convince her to upgrade, telling her they could stay in touch more easily with Whatsapp rather than pages-long emails once or twice a week. Sadly, this would turn out to be the last positive memory they would have of their peaceful afternoon.

“Can I ask you something, but you have to promise not to get mad.” Chris posed an interesting question. How was she supposed to respond to that?

“I don’t get why you’re meeting Charlotte.” He could see Sarah about to protest and continued regardless. “I don’t see what good can come from this. You’ve tried it once before, it failed, and you didn’t leave you bed for two weeks. I was there, Sarah. It was horrible. I don’t understand why you would put yourself through that again.”

His tone was a little louder than he realised and placed a hand over his mouth, wiping at his beard as if that would somehow erase his words from having been spoken. Sarah didn’t know what to say. She was tired with a continuous feeling of frustration at having to explain away her decisions at every turn. She hadn’t mentioned meeting her birth mother for a while now but could sense the apprehension people had at the thought. If it wasn’t Chris, it was Shanna, and if it wasn’t Shanna, Audrey had kindly informed her she was taking an unnecessary risk although she didn’t put it quite so mildly.

“You don’t have to agree with me. I get that no one supports me here,”

“Oh, that’s unfair. Jesus.” He turned to face away from where Jocelyn was stood, only a few feet ahead of them but seemingly oblivious to their contention. “It’s not just you that this affects, you know. You seem to forget that.”

There was no mistaking his argument this time as he drew Sarah’s attention back in her mother’s direction.

“Have you guys been talking about this behind my back?” Sarah finally asked after what felt like minutes of silence. Noah was now indicating at something ahead of them.

Chris took a breath and Sarah could tell he was refraining from saying something he might regret. “No, we haven’t we’re just concerned is all. You don’t know her -”

“- hence why I am going to meet her.”

“- and you don’t know what she is after.”

She stood still as Chris continued walking but only getting a few steps ahead of her before noticing she’d stopped altogether. Jocelyn and Noah continued on ahead of them, enjoying the drizzly walk and the lights of the town and gradually getting further and further away.

“Do you not think it’s just what she wants to know who I am? What is it that you think she is after?”

“Sarah, don’t do this, OK? I’m not going to get into an argument with you about this now because I’m not going to say what you want to hear. I’m sorry.” He looked at her carefully for a second. “I just...I see you guys together hanging out and it fits, y’know? You’re so like them, Sarah. You think the same things, you like the same things. If I didn’t know you at all, I’d think you were the double of Joss. They’d be heartbroken if they knew what you were doing.”

Sarah couldn’t look him in the eye. The older Sarah would have possibly turned to run at this point, trying to avoid conflict at all costs, but they’d had spats before and Chris was nothing if not annoyingly unflappable. She knew he would tell her straight and as much as she might not want to hear it right in this moment, it was probably for the best.

He saw a flash of what looked like hurt cross her face. Now or never, he doubled down. “You wanted to know what I thought so I’m telling you.” He shoved his hands in his pockets and turned to make tracks but not before one last bash. “I think this is a bad idea.”

“Well, then it’s a bad idea I’ll deal with myself.”

Just a few details about Saturday, November 4th 2017 Concordia Golf Classic @ Binhai Golf Club. This is a fun, best ball scramble to create community and raise awareness about wellness.

• Cost for the golf is 1200 RMB (cost from course), plus 100 RMB tip for the caddie per person • 12 PM Shotgun Start - Flight Information will be given the week of the outing. • We will be scheduling the buses for an 10:45am arrival at the course that will leave from Concordia, let us know if you need a ride. • Sack Lunch will be provided to eat on the course • Banquet dinner at the end for those who don't have to run off to another event – need to know if you are staying for dinner • Locker and Shower facilities are nice, so bring a change of clothes for after your round • Awards for Longest Drive, Shortest Used Drive, Straightest Drive, Closest to the Pin, Longest Putt, Lowest Team Score, Highest Team Score • Raffle at Banquet • Drink Tickets will be sold at registration 10 for a 100 RMB • Drink carts (2) on the course during the round ▪ Beer, soda, juice and water are one ticket each • "Mulligan Charity Pack" - 200 RMB • One extra tee shot, chip, putt, and approach shot • 18 inches of string & scissors – receive during check in – one per foursome, use the string to make a putt that you missed • Men use BLUE tees Women use RED tees - Minimum of 2 tee shots per person must be used.

» Breakthrough Junior Challenge for Yoochan Shin

Yoochan Shin, Grade 11, entered a competition called Breakthrough Junior Challenge. His entry has made it into the top 30 videos in the world out of 6, 000, and is now in the popular vote competition. The winner of the popular vote automatically makes it to the finals. Yoochan is asking for help from our community so that he can get as many votes as possible. This could be hugely beneficial to Yoochan, his mentor, Mr. Klammer and our school in the way of financial prizes-a college scholarship, science lab and cash prizes. The popular vote began on Oct 23, ends Nov. 2nd. Here's a message from Yoochan:

My name is Yoochan Shin, a junior in Concordia. Ever since I was little, I have loved science. Bill Nye the Science Guy or the countless Korean science comic books my parents (just like any other Korean parents did in the early 2000s) bought for me may have ignited my passion in science, but to this day I am motivated by the greater appreciation of the world learning science provides. My latest video, inspired by my engineering teacher, Mr. Klammer, is the culmination of my knowledge, passion, and philosophy. The production process took a hundred and fifty hours to make. Tomorrow is our first bake sale of the year! This month the PSO will donate 20% of our treat sale profits to the High School's Global Development class, which is working on fundraising projects to support LCMS. LCMS is an organization which is actively engaged in providing aid to recent Hurricane victims in the United States and the Caribbean islands. » Carrying Copies of Passport and Visa

We have been informed by Public Security Bureau that policemen are being sent to different locations like supermarkets or streets to check people's passport and visa. We would like to remind our community that carrying a copy of your passport and visa in your wallet is recommended so you are fine if you are checked. Please note that the policemen will show you their working ID when they stop you. If they don't, please ask. If you forget to carry the two copies, they could take you back to their office. In this case, we suggest you contact your employer who can confirm your passport and visa information. They may also stop unaccompanied students so I would recommend that you review this procedure with them as well.

» New Residence Permits, Work Permits or Passports?

Whenever you or your family members receive new residence permits, work permits and/or passports, please be sure to send copies of your new documents to the Admissions office, in the Welcome Center (1st floor High School). Or, email soft copies to Admissions. Keeping your children's files up to date helps us keep in compliance with Chinese governmental regulations.

» No Bicycles for Children Under Age 12 on Public Streets - Shanghai International Schools Association (SISA)

The following information regarding bicycle riding in Shanghai is shared in an attempt to be helpful to all its member schools. For safety purposes, the regulations in Shanghai allow for bicycles to be ridden on public streets only by children age 12 and above. This regulation is strictly enforced in Puxi, but is unevenly applied in Pudong. The immediate danger is that families may assume that local protections for bicycle riders may be the same as in their own country, but they are not. It is important to be aware that if a child under 12 is involved in any kind of accident on a public street or crossing, the parent may be held responsible. Sidewalks and bicycle paths along public roads are considered part of the public roads. In addition, as accident insurance is relatively new to China and there are not many precedents with these situations, your own accident or medical insurance company has the right to refuse cover in the event of violation of the local law. We hope that better understanding will result in better safety for younger children.

Why Giving Away Pays Off The Most

The bidding war that erupted among two industry titans Nov. 14, 2016 over a donated Lincoln Continental sedan finally had to wind down to a draw and a good deal.

No industry auction event had ever spawned such high stakes one-upmanship before a rapt audience. And all this over a mid-$40,000s sedan that either one could have just bought on his own, checkbook in hand.

Dawson Rutter, the CEO-owner of Commonwealth Worldwide Chauffeured Transportation in Boston, and George Jacobs, CEO-owner of Windy City Limousine & Bus in Chicago, finally settled on giving $72,000 each for the car. The vehicle donor, Ford/Lincoln Limousine & Livery Vehicles, came up with a second car so each CEO would get one. When the tab was settled, the auction beneficiary, the NLA Harold Memorial Berkman Fund, netted a record $100,000, while $44,000 funded the second vehicle.

At one point during the dinner gala bidding, held during LCT-NLA Show East in Atlantic City, N.J., the sparring CEOs threw out $2,500 raises on each other as other bidders fell by the wayside.

“Dawson says to me, ‘How far do you want to go with this?’ It was so funny,” recalled Jacobs in a recent interview. Craig Hall, the marketing manager for Ford/Lincoln, got worried about the clash. “He feared Dawson and I would come to blows. He was terrified our friendship was disintegrating but he had no idea we were having the best time. It didn’t matter who got the car and what we paid. We’re both Type As and knew we were doing something special for charity. You give to charity and have the best possible fun.”

Rutter recalled how at one industry auction about 15 years ago a bidding session for an auction item stalled at $3,400. So Jacobs waved a $100 bill to keep interest going. Once bids resumed, the auctioneer returned the $100 bill to Jacobs, who didn’t want it back and instead bid it out on behalf of the auction. Rutter bought the $100 bill for $1,000.

Intangible ROI So how did these two chauffeured transportation leaders, who trace their industry lineage to the founding era of the mid-1980s when LCT and the NLA started, get so carefree about donating to charity? Their charitable efforts provide some guidelines for operators who seek the most joyful investments of all.

Jacobs and Rutter say their philanthropy grants a satisfaction that goes beyond any bottom line ROI. Most of their donations consist of money and chauffeured transportation.

“I didn’t have a particular motive,” Jacobs says of his years of philanthropy, “other than just a desire to give back.”

Among the many groups Jacobs has donated to over the years: Make-A-Wish Foundation Illinois/Wisconsin/Indiana, Hydrocephalus Foundation, Front Row Foundation, Harold Berkman Memorial Fund, Step Up Women’s Network, YWCA, Ronald McDonald House, Greater Chicago Food Depository, Chicago Police Department, Food Bank, Hemisphere Travel, Rush University, University of Chicago Hospitals, Loyola University, Toys For Tots, The Salvation Army, Nature Conversancy, Autobahn Society, Covenant House, Alzheimer’s Foundation, National Arbor Day, the SPCA, Animal Rescue, scholarship funds, and hometown teams Chicago Bulls, Bears, White Sox, and Cubs. In August, Jacobs will donate to Camp Kids Are Kids, a group that helps children with cancer attend summer camp free of distractions.

“It makes you feel good when you are doing something good for others,” Jacobs says. “Everything I have I got from the limousine industry. I like to give it away; sometimes it’s dollars, transportation, or advice, or sometimes it’s speaking and giving incentives to people. The letters we get from Make-A-Wish kids who draw pictures and take photos when they ride in a limo gives me joy. To them it’s everything. In some cases, it’s their final request.”

As Commonwealth grew, Rutter started compiling a list of local charity recipients, such as Massachusetts General Hospital. At first, he donated small amounts of $1,000 or less. Since 2001, Rutter has been a grand benefactor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, donating $1.5 million in transportation. He’s also been involved with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Wounded Warriors, the Berkman Fund, and the Lupus Foundation of America, to name a few.

“One thing I really felt great about is donating to cystic fibrosis for 25 years,” Rutter said. “There have been major breakthroughs and they are on the verge of curing a significant part of the fibrosis population. When you’re giving money for many years and seeing no result, and then see progress, that is very gratifying.”

Sometimes charity donations can involve showing up at activities such as golf tournaments and fishing derbies. At one event, Rutter bought a few golf balls bid up to $5,000.

Forming A Habit Jacobs and Rutter say once a company finds a financial rhythm for donations, it should become a budget item. The amount can still vary depending on revenue and economic conditions. “When we have a soft year, I drop the amount of donated service; in a good year it goes back up,” Rutter says.

During the last recession, Jacobs had to cut salaries at his company 10% and reduce charitable donations, but the company never laid anyone off and kept giving as it could. “You try to plan ahead and make it part of your expenses,” Jacobs says. “You do the most you can do; sometimes you don’t have the best year ever. You always let them know you’re there and you always do something.”

Finding The Right Causes Like any business line item, organized donations require review and evaluation. Donors often learn by doing. To select charities, Jacobs and Rutter follow two approaches:

1. Check out recommendations from clients and employees. “I like to get input from other people and see the best use of funds to do the most good and cover the greatest number of people,” Jacobs says.

2. Rutter suggests using charity scorecard websites online that can tell you if a charity misuses funds or doesn’t run efficiently. “Some of them donate very little to the actual cause and most of the money is eaten up by administration and to support salaries,” he says.

While both companies give generously, they do not designate a position to handle donations. Rutter makes all decisions on charity. Jacobs and senior managers choose where to disburse funds. Jacobs advises not to allow sales staff to determine giveaways because “they think they can sell more if they give more.”

Personal Connections Some causes are obvious good fits for the limousine industry, such as the NLA’s Harold Berkman Memorial Fund that sends money to a group of charities, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation that uses free limousine rides for children. Otherwise, operators should choose donors based on success and a high pass-through of funds to recipients, Rutter says.

Worthy causes also can reflect the interests and motives of the owner. “A lot of charities suit my own wishes and desires,” Rutter says. “With the Lupus foundation, it almost all goes to the patients. I donate to Alzheimer’s because by the time I get older, I’d like to see less risk for getting the condition. I’ve had animals my whole life, so I donate to the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. I had a heart issue, heart arrhythmia, so I put in $50,000 for a heart charity. I’m with a group of men a friend put together and we all pledged $50,000 each to Brigham and Women’s Hospital’s cardiac center and cardiologist research.”

“The Berkman Fund has no fees or salaries and makes perfect sense because it’s a good central location,” adds Jacobs, who helped start the fund named after the late founder and owner of Los Angeles-based Music Express, Harold Berkman.

Qualifiers As with any business-related venture, not all charitable efforts necessarily work for the best. “We do not donate to auctions anymore,” Rutter says. “The reason is when people buy [your service] at an auction, they think they own the car. It’s based on availability, but we had so many problems with people arguing and complaining to us about the free service. No more. People abused us on one-off donations. Now we’ll donate $200 instead of a car.”

For the same reason, Commonwealth does not offer rides for weddings or proms. “Too many complaining brides and we don’t have limos anymore,” Rutter says. “We don’t do proms or retail work, so we don’t get people throwing up in the back of limos. No more brides complaining dirt got on their dress from my car.”

Let Publicity Find You While media exposure on charitable activities can yield new clients and positive word-of-mouth, the CEOs eschew those motives. “You don’t do it with that mind, but it’s a nice thing when that happens and it comes back to you,” Jacobs says.

“I don’t look for publicity,” Rutter says. “I used to go to charity golf events and donate items back to be auctioned off. It’s a lot of fun just giving away money to the right people.”

Inspiring Employees Another benefit for a business with a charity program is it sets an example for employees. At Commonwealth, employees participate in a YMCA Christmas gift giveaway for children in underprivileged neighborhoods. “They are happy to be part of what we’re doing as a company,” Rutter says. Adds Jacobs: “What our company does is if a chauffeur or employee falls on hard times, has a death in the family, or a setback, employees raise funds. I match the employees by a set amount and it creates great camaraderie.

Tax Write Offs? Rutter advises keeping accurate records for tax returns. The mention of taxes spurs a pet peeve for Jacobs: “Everything you do in business — payroll, rent, gas, etc. is an expense. What’s Next? After the blowout auction in Atlantic City, Jacobs and Rutter plan to ratchet up their efforts.

“We have all this year to figure out how to top ourselves,” Rutter said. “We’re starting to have a germ of an idea: Team Dawson and Team George. Maybe we raise $10,000 from each of 10 people. . .” he says, thinking out loud.

Such an idea could yield another high-stakes stalemate.

But then, who cares if Rutter or Jacobs gives more? The benefits always ensure the most winners.
