i had this whole thing a few days ago trying to walk through each step of jayce and mel's relationship in an attempt to parse exactly how and why their story (separate and together) got so fumbled in s2 but by the time i finished recapping s1 to myself i was so tired and the thought of going through s2 beat by beat, even by memory, was so mind-numbing i just couldnt and gave up

anyway the point of this post is that my only takeaway from going through all that was mel and jayce hardly knowing each other is a fact i can believe 100% now. i was always baffled by "i didn't know you were an artist"/"i didn't realize [you and viktor] were so close", but then when going through it all it hit me. if mel knew jayce well at all, she'd have realized sooner that putting him in politics - in the council - would be a horrible horrible idea, and she'd have tossed the plan if she knew.

their relationship had entirely been surface-level respect/admiration/attraction. they only started getting to know each other after the concert, AFTER sleeping together. it is only when jayce puts his head on her lap that she starts falling for him.

...now where the hell did "nothing feels impossible when i'm with you" come from? Fuck if i know!

(After writing this all out i think mel also just had way too thick capitalist-politician glasses on because no way you speak to jayce talis enough for him to vent to you about heimerdinger and such and such without getting Some idea that he Fucking Hates the world of profits and beaurocracy idk man)
