Presenting: The Carmilla Canon Tweets Collection!
Iâm only four-and-a-half years late, but I hope people will enjoy this anyway. All four of the canon Twitter accounts, arranged in chronological order, and packaged into a .cbz file for your reading convenience.
Hereâs the download link.
If this is the first time youâve heard of a .cbz file, they can be opened with a program called CDisplay (and other programs too.) Alternatively, you can change the extension to .zip and extract all of the images if you so choose.
For a little more specificity and methodology about this collection: When images were tweeted, the full-size image follows after in a âpageâ by itself. For links, if they didnât have an embedded preview within the tweet, I include a single screenshot of the linked site in a âpageâ by itself. Itâs not the full content of the link, just enough to preview the webpage and understand the context of what was being linked.
This collection contains the public tweets, i.e. scripted content. The only replies are the replies to each other. No one else. I did seriously consider including all replies, as well as the tweets to which they were replying, but I ultimately decided against it for a few reasons.
The four canon accounts are still on Twitter and are expected to remain there indefinitely. The accounts are: Laura2theLetter, HeyCarmilla, SilasUniversity, and LaFilphormes. This collection just arranges the tweets from all four accounts together into chronological reading order and uses the icons that the accounts were using at the time the tweets were made.
For the explanation of my reasons for leaving out replies and other highly specific nerdy details:
Reason number one is that the scripted content is essentially the story the writers were telling with these tweets. The rest is sort of in-character ad-libbing, but not necessarily story progression. Reason number two is that a lot of the accounts being replied to have changed names or vanished in the years between then and now. Even a few of the quasi-canon fan-made RP accounts are gone and I wouldnât have been able to track down all of their tweets or their icons. Reason number three is that if I had included everything I could find then this project wouldâve taken me at least ten years to complete instead of four. There are a few gems in the replies, especially from the Silas University account, but I had to make a judgment call. The tweets in this collection are the tweets you would see if you followed all four accounts, but didnât follow any of the other fans and RP accounts that the canon accounts would occasionally reply to.
Regarding chronological order, there were a few instances in the early days when several tweets seem to have been scheduled for the same time and ended up posting out of order. I rearranged in these instances to present the tweets in what seemed to be the intended order. There was also one instance that Iâm reasonably confident was an a.m./p.m. scheduling mixup and Iâve rearranged that one as well. There are other instances where I suspect some tweets might have been inadvertently shuffled somehow, but I didnât have anything solid enough to justify rearranging.
And this is about to be an extremely nerdy aside within this extremely nerdy aside, but there was one particular tweet that I chose to edit because the formatting or something was causing it to display differently on different devices. Itâs one of Lauraâs garbled tweets from between S3 Act 2 and S3 Act 3. The characters of the tweet displayed in different orders every time I tried to view the tweet another way. Windows 7, Windows 10, Android Phone, the search results page vs. the status page, and using the mobile.twitter link instead of the regular twitter link.
After much confusion about this, I eventually copied the text of the tweet into a document, and it came out in this order:
And according to Ellen Simpson, what the tweet actually says is that, when you read it backwards, bottom line then top. So, what I did was take the screenshot and then manually rearrange the characters into that (backwards) order, and kept the right alignment that the tweet seemed to have, producing this result:
I also included the tweet in a separate âpageâ right after, as it appeared in the search results on the Windows 7 laptop that I used to screenshot the rest of the tweets, for authenticityâs sake.
The tweets at this time were all scrambled anyways, but the rest were all readable approximations of Ellenâs translations and I donât think making it that level of scrambled was intentional. The characterâs show up in the right (backwards) order on TweetDeck, just not on any version of the Twitter site.
And lastly, the way tweets appear on Twitter has changed several times since I started this project. The circular icons are probably the most obvious change. Iâve pasted the original square icons over those. However, the width of the tweet column, font, and the replies/retweets/likes have changed over time as well.
I restarted this project several times, hoping to be able to screenshot every tweet in the same layout. Eagle-eyed viewers may spot a small and insignificant difference between certain page groups. Doing the whole project in-between any revisions to the Twitter site proved to be more than I was capable of, but the final result has an overall uniformity of presentation that Iâm very satisfied with.
I think that should explain just about anything that anyone as nerdy about this as I am would be curious to know.

A little bit of the history of U.S imperialism after the fall of the U.S.S.R via /r/communism
A little bit of the history of U.S imperialism after the fall of the U.S.S.R
The post seeks to explain the postmodern developments of American imperialism. It was originally made in Portuguese, transcribed to English quickly with Google Translate and I tried to fix all grammatical errors I could find. Many people come to this subreddit asking about Russia, Syria, Yemen and other specific countries. As such, I believe this post to be useful.
The major contradiction that surrounds the globe is that of American imperialism and the most diverse manifestations of anti-imperialism and counter-imperialism. The death of the USSR over a convulsion of multinational neoliberalism created the conditions for US neoliberal momentum and the submission of the globe to its will.
In Yugoslavia, the last bastion of European socialism (Portugal's '' socialists '' make us laugh at their austerity) was consumed by German-funded nationalist barbarism (with an interest in Croatia, Slovenia and its possibilities for projection into Eastern Europe) and American. The IMF's loans to Yugoslavia, as always, demanded neoliberal reforms which, to the dissatisfaction of such organizations, Tito and Milosevic only submitted to. A false image of the Serbs as mass rapists is created, sparing Croatian crimes; of Bosnia and Kosovars of media attention. Eventually, Yugoslavia is dismantled in a sinister threat to Russia. A puppet state for American interests is created in Kosovo, the extraction of mineral resources included on that program. Montenegro and Serbia gradually leave Russia's orbit (the former more than the latter) creating a tense geopolitical scenario.
The oil crisis in the 20th century proved to be the Bush administration's biggest concern, it planning invasions against Saddam Hussein and the Taliban even before 9/11. Saudi Arabia had become too big, too ambitious to be controlled by the United States. It financed Islamist terrorism and Wahhabi institutions around the world in a rejection of Westernist principles. The importance of Saudi Arabia for the free movement of oil, as well as its collaboration on many issues of international politics and the purchase of American weapons, prevented any possibility of extensive publication of these findings, even when the financing of Al Qaeda by the Al-Saud and assistance with its state intelligence culminated in 9/11. However, the ignorance of the American public could be exploited from the trauma of Al-Qaeda to "" fight terrorism and the nations that shelter it "" in a relatively disconnected way with 9/11.
In Iraq, Dick Cheney and other neocons were exhausted from Saddam Hussein's use of oil as a bargaining chip. By turning on and off the taps of black gold to erratically, crude oil prices threatened to rise, against the interests of refineries across the globe and possibly creating a global energy crisis (Iraq's oil importance cannot be underestimated, it is considered by some analysts greater than Saudi Arabia). The invasion of Iraq was not exactly aimed at the extraction of these oil resources by the imperial powers, although this was an important bonus that motivated the participation of the United Kingdom, but simply to put that oil in motion. China and Russia would soon take some of the pie with their state-owned companies, something not ideal but acceptable in the context of American interests.
In Afghanistan, a progressive socialist revolution with feminist characteristics was stifled in the Cold War with a blackest reaction supported by the USA. It did not interest the pastoralists and the old elites in Afghanistan the programs of the Sardur revolution and the United States gave moral support; financial and military support to their counter-revolution efforts. Afghanistan was not a Soviet republic, but it was part of its sphere of influence, hence the importance of fighting Afghanistan together with the vassals of Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, interested in Sunni uprisings. China has also financed opposition groups in its sad but understandable policy to combat Kruschevian revisionism. Eventually, Afghanistan was dominated by the Taliban and their female genital mutilation; destruction of Western icons (including a Greek heritage in Afghanistan until then) and a ban on music. The Taliban was only fought at the moment that it no longer collaborated with the US in the construction by USATCO of an oil pipeline starting in Uzbekistan and passing through Afghanistan, requiring intervention. Officially, the Taliban was hunted for cooperation with al Qaeda, which was real.
In Somalia, a war was declared on one of Somalia's first stable governments in the 21st century: the ICU, for its Islamist features. Thanks to its wealth of resources such as uranium and oil as well as its connection to the Gulf of Aden where much of the world's oil came from, Somalia has always been imperialized by the IMF and NATO. The local fishing industry has been destroyed both by radioactive waste dumped by European companies in the water and by the massive technological scale extraction of fish by foreign companies within Somalia's territorial waters.
Not all war is war properly said. Professor Gene Sharp's manuals created a guide on how to use civilian demonstrations, strikes and boycotts in the service of the CIA. The best example was the US incentive to the Cedar Revolution, a series of protests in Lebanon that put an end to the Syrian occupation, resulting from civil wars between religious and ethnic groups. Both Syria and Iraq were pan-Arabists, that is, they aimed at uniting all Arab nations in a single country, countries cut in half by the state of Israel. Secular and socialist pan-Arabism posed an obvious threat to the strategic interests of the United States and its allies Israel and Saudi Arabia, hence the opposition to Syria that would later become war. Note that there is no proletarian dictatorship in Syria and '' socialism '' means in practice a greater social democracy in intensity than in the West.
The Bush wars have claimed many lives, innocent or 'combatants', destroying the infrastructure of these countries and creating political instability. NATO's imperialist policy not only achieves its strategic objectives, it also destroys recipient countries. This is partly intentional, like negligent homicide. The destruction of Iraq and Afghanistan and, as we shall see, in Libya made possible both an initial expansion of the military-industrial complex that influences policy in the USA and reconstruction contracts that created inflationary cycles (that is, monetary expansion) that were taken advantage of by USA. They destroy and then rebuild, both phases of the capitalist process of avoiding contraction cycles by expanding the outside world.
One of the reasons that American imperialism went into crisis was that it went too far. The destruction of Yugoslavia, the creation of new oil routes in Afghanistan that deviated from Russia (on which the first world countries were highly dependent), oil penetration in Central Asia, the financing of anti-Russian politicians in Georgia and Ukraine...again and again the US has abused the world's second largest military power at its weakest moment. This context explains how Vladimir Putin came to power, a right-wing ultranationalist ready to recover Russia's strength not as a stronghold of socialism but as an imperialist force that falls short of the USA, at the taste of the domestic bourgeoisie. As a message, he invaded Georgia who planned to become a NATO member. Russia's recovery would have great implications for all of Eurasia, as we all know from the screams of the media and the heightening of tensions in Ukraine, always in the same West vs. East paradigm.
Belarus recently entered the Russia-US dispute. With a largely state-owned economy that never underwent neoliberal shock therapies (despite the lack of retirement among other capitalist aspects) and in Russia's sphere of influence, the relationship between the two degenerated by Lukansheko's resistance to Putin's attempts at absorption in a Union State, looking for new energy sources in Norway. This new vulnerability in Belarus was exploited by the imperialists through the traditional method of "promoting democracy" and Russian paramilitaries are known to be watching the situation.
Although the United States is not very directly involved, one cannot speak of Russia's geopolitics without mentioning the war between Armenia and Azerbaijan, which ended today (?) and lasted 45 days. But frankly, this issue is too complex for me. I will leave a link that I found useful: https://geohistory.today/nagorno-karabakh/#:~:text=The%20Republic%20of%20Nagorno%2DKarabakh,Azerbaijan%20that%20lasted%20until%201994.
Another country the United States has abused the patience of is China. The protests in Tiannamen Square were largely promoted by private charities associated with the West, and were harshly repressed by Deng Xiaoping. Thereafter, the terrorist-buying state of Turkey provided support to separatist Islamist terrorists in Xinjiang, a region of traditionally Turkish and Islamic China. The United States had previously provided assistance to the Tibetan insurgency under Mao, and continued to provide moral and religious support through its institutions. The US strategy with China was to dismember its diverse ethnicities into separate and enemy territories so that it will not be able to project itself geographically across Eurasia, unifying Tibetan separatisms; Mongolians; Uighurs and Hong Kong. Most recently, the US is attemping to force a color revolution in Thailand. Admitting this is no defense of the Thai monarchy but an understanding of its commercial relationship with the U.S and how installing a regime favourable to the West would be a strike against China. The U.S has also pitied Vietnam and China against each other whenever possible.
Like Russia, China has not been shaken by these attempts and has extended its economic and military dominance across the globe. The strong Chinese state-owned industry challenged the neoliberal models of growth and, through a policy based on non-interference in domestic affairs that contrasted with US imperialism, China attracted dozens of peripheral countries to its attention. Thus, we must understand the preference for China as a conscious rejection of the USA. The unified front between China and Russia represents the greatest challenge to the USA in modernity.
The endless wars of the USA could not be sustained indefinitely, requiring endless loans from the most diverse countries. Eventually, the irrationalism of bankers typical of neoliberalism created the crisis of 2008, with a deficit that required more loans and, consequently, more debt and more deficit. Income inequality has exploded. It was under these conditions that Barack Obama was elected, promising to resolve the insoluble contradictions of American imperialism on a progressive paradigm.
Obama did not comply with any of these proposals and in fact expanded the scope of the war beyond Bush, killing more people with drones. It is important to note that the war in Afghanistan was not over yet and Osama was not captured. It was in this context that Obama decided to replace soldiers with automatic drones that were supposed to promise fewer civilian deaths, and expanded the war to Pakistan to fight another Taliban front.
But the drones were more useful for saving the lives of American soldiers (which was probably the intention) than for Pakistanis and Afghans. Death from heaven created trauma for the local population, who avoided going to weddings because of the constant errors in recognition of drones. As stated, the US wars may not literally target the killing of civilians, but they are negligent in causing them.
Expanding the war in Afghanistan would not be enough and Obama declared three completely new wars: that of Libya, Yemen and Syria.
Libya had long been a stumbling block in the US. Allied to the USSR while it existed, Colonel Muammar Gaddafi had an anti-imperialist and socialist program of a similar nature to the one I described from Syria, that is, more of an intense social democracy than a dictatorship of the proletariat. Gaddafi also sought to overcome the tribalisms that divided Libya and harmful traditions such as the prohibition of divorce, by greatly expanding women's rights. Gaddafi criticized the democratic models of the West and proposed a controversial new model of direct democracy, Jamarihya. Regardless of the reservations that the reader has with this method, he was certainly more democratic than the Sunni Islamic terrorism that the United States financed in order to destroy this bastion of resistance to the Empire, consuming Libya in a civil war horrible enough for Obama to admit it as '' error '' in an abstract way. As always, European powers emerged from the air to protect oil. Gaddafi went through a phase of surrender and collaboration, dismantling his nuclear program, but he was still killed. This would serve to motivate North Korea not to abandon its nuclear program.
Practically the same thing is happening in Syria, both regarding the United States methods and in the nature of Bashar al Assad. The difference, however, lies in the support of Syria from the unified China-Russia front as well as from the regional power of iran. Only in this way has Bashar managed to stay in power. Iran is a non-secular Shiite nation that was imperialized by the United States under the Shah regime, being overthrown in Ayatollah Komeini's Islamic but anti-imperialist revolution. It is a regional power with large oil reserves and a respectable army, accused of financing the anti-Israeli group Hezbollah.
The situation in Yemen is substantially different. The Zaidi, a very significant Shiite minority in the north of the country who have a history of sovereign states in the region, threatened to expand a Shi'ite revolt over the Gulf states like Bahrain; UAE and Saudi Arabia, all marginalized economically and politically. Saudi Arabia installed a president favorable to its exploration interests, creating a spontaneous zaidi revolt that would be suppressed by the US-Arab junta. To justify the intervention, the US used the decontextualized motto of the zaidi groups of "Death to the USA, death to Israel" as a demonstration of religious extremism. Which is partially understood, but must also be understood as anti-imperialist reaction.
And that's it, folks. Does history end at Yemen? Obviously no. Yet my systematic knowledge ends here.

I remember the phrase "sound it out" from school, and I vaguely remember learning something about long & short vowels or such and to (on Between the Lions) but I don't think I ever understood that or paid it any thought since there were so many exceptions. of course, that doesn't mean it didn't do me any good, just that I didn't consciously recognize that it did (perhaps explaining what non-phonic approaches to teaching reading could be contemplated to begin with?)
One non-phonic approach to reading instruction is based on the belief that reading is a process of integration of syntactic, semantic, and graphic (i.e. whole word shape) cues -- in other words, a series of context-based guesses. This model has no allowance at all for the fact that spelling isnât completely irregular -- as far as itâs concerned, the English alphabet may as well be a logography!
The paper that originally laid out this model (doi:10.1080/19388076709556976) can speak for itself:
Simply stated, the common sense notion I seek here to refute is this: âReading is a precise process. It involves exact, detailed, sequential perception and identification of letters, words, spelling patterns and larger language units.â
In phonic centered approaches to reading, the preoccupation is with precise letter identification. In word centered approaches, the focus is on word identification. Known words are sight words, precisely named in any setting.
This is not to say that those who have worked diligently in the field of reading are not aware that reading is more than precise, sequential identification. But, the common sense notion, though not adequate, continues to permeate thinking about reading.
Spache presents a word version of this common sense view: âThus, in its simplest form, reading may be considered a series of word perceptions.â
The teacher's manual of the Lippincott Basic Reading incorporates a letter by letter variant in the justification of its reading approach: âIn short, following this program the child learns from the beginning to see words exactly as the most skillful readers see them . . . as whole images of complete words with all their letters.â In place of this misconception, I offer this: âReading is a selective process. It involves partial use of available minimal language cues selected from perceptual input on the basis of the reader's expectation. As this partial information is processed, tentative decisions are made to be confirmed, rejected or refined as reading progresses.â More simply stated, reading is a psycholinguistic guessing game. It involves an interaction between thought and language. Efficient reading does not result from precise perception and identification of all elements, but from skill in selecting the fewest, most productive cues necessary to produce guesses which are right the first time.Â
The argument in favor of this position is... a handful of case studies of reading errors made by young children! (And some Chomskyist stuff that I donât care to work through.) And Ken Goodman, the author of the paper quoted above and one of the major proponents of âwhole-language theoryâ, had some studies to back this up:
In a study conducted by Goodman (1965), students in grades 1-3 first read lists of words. Then the children were presented the same words to read in meaningful text. The students made many more errors when they read the words out of context (i.e., when the words were in lists) than they did when the words were read in context. This, of course, is consistent with the hypothesis that reading will be facilitated when semantic-contextual and syntactic-contextual cues are present (i.e., when words are read as part of a text) compared to when words are read devoid of context cues (i.e., when words are read on lists). This finding has been used repeatedly to defend the meaning-emphasis practice of teaching students to recognize words by analyzing syntactic, graphemic-phonemic, and especially semantic cues.
Nicholson (1991) detected several very serious shortcomings in the Goodman (1965) study, however. First, no attention was paid in the Goodman (1965) investigation of the patterns of performance by good and poor readers. In addition, the participants always read the lists followed by reading of the words in context, and thus there was the possibility that the improved performance in moving from list reading to reading in context might reflect some type of practice effect (i.e., the words in context had been seen before, on the lists).
In Nicholson (1991), students once again were asked to process words in lists and in context. In this study, however, the list-context order was manipulated such that some participants read the lists first and others read the words in context first. Moreover, the study included systematic analysis of reading as a function of the grade of participants and their reading abilities relative to other students (i.e., good, average, weak). The outcomes in this study were anything but consistent with Goodman's (1965) results:
- Some readers did benefit from reading the words in the sentence context -- namely, poor readers at each age level and average 6- and 7-year-olds. - In context, a positive effect on reading was obtained in sentence context for good 6-year-old readers and average 8-year-olds only when reading words in sentence contexts followed reading words in lists, consistent with the practice effect explanation of the original Goodman (1965) finding. - There was no positive effect derived from reading words in context for good 7- and 8-year-old readers. Indeed, when the 8-year-old good readers did sentence-context reading first, they did better on reading of the words in list format.
Oops!
In very simple terms: how do you prompt a student whoâs struggling with a word -- âSound it out!â or âContext clues!â (The teachers I had always said clues instead of cues; I donât know if that was because children would be more likely to know the former word or if someone misread it somewhere in the chain of transmission.) And there are a few problems with that:
- No attention is paid to the process of encoding. Even if treating words as logograms whose readings are to be inferred from context works to teach children to read (it doesnât), how are they supposed to learn to write? (At the height of whole-language theoryâs influence, some states banned public schools from buying spelling books.)
- What happens if you hit a proper noun? Take the following sentence: âNotably, Ross' classification does not support the ââââ of the Tsouic languages, instead considering the Southern Tsouic languages of Kanakanavu and Saaroa to be a separate branch.â Context cues let you extract meaning from this sentence without knowing the reading of ââââ, but if you have to read it aloud and you canât sound things out, youâll hit âKanakanavuâ and produce garble. (You might still be wrong even if you can sound it out, because stress is unwritten and English words arenât marked for which rule-set to use -- consider the words alveolar and maraschino -- but thereâs a difference between being wrong and producing garble. Garble will probably accurately represent the cues, including the vague, impressionistic shape of the word, but a stress or rule-set error will at least convey the spelling. Buegehti for Buttigieg is a good example of garble -- you have the word-shape cues (starts with Bu, most of the letters are there) and the semantic cues (weird surname from the periphery of Europe; I assume Buegehti is pseudo-Finnish), but itâs not even close, and probably unrecoverable without context. (So contextual information isnât totally useless.)
- Even if the relevant actors were willing to accept lack of attention to spelling and inability to decode phonetic information that context wonât help you with in order to get gains in reading ability... there are no gains.
But, as things do, whole-language theory got a lot wackier from there. Its proponents started referencing Chomskyâs language instinct to posit a reading instinct, which, the theory went, would lead children to automatically acquire reading with no instruction necessary (except highly technical facilitation was still considered necessary, because if schoolteachers arenât essential, whatâs the point?); claiming that phonics actually impeded literacy; attacking opponents of their theory as part of a far-right conspiracy to suppress teachersâ freedom and destroy public education; calling whole-language education a ârevolutionâ that would lead to true liberation and model the egalitarian society of the future; and so on.
For example, Shafer 1998:
Over the years, various writers, politicians, and media sources have taken aim at whole language, vilifying its motives and misrepresenting its goals. While many of the attacks have come from a lamentable ignorance on the part of T.V. reporters and talk show hosts, evidence exists that a portion of it has been carefully orchestrated by conservatives who clearly seem threatened by the implications of a whole language curriculum. Indeed, the list of writers who have opposed whole language initiatives reads like a who's who of conservative pundits. William Bennett, Phyllis Schlafly, Cal Thomas, and Chester Finn have all written articles deriding whole language, despite its overwhelming acceptance among academic organizations and respected scholars.
Many theories have been offered as to why whole language has become so partisan and acrimonious - and why conservatives in particular seem threatened by its humanistic objectives. What seems glaringly clear, in the end, is that whole language - with its caveat for student liberation and control - scares people who want to maintain a hierarchical, top-down approach to learning. The threat of whole language, at least from my perspective, lies in its bold challenge to traditional icons and time-honored practices. Some teachers feel intimidated by the notion that their way is not the only way - that their favorite authors shouldn't be their students' favorite authors.
When students cease to be receptacles of information and begin generating their own ideas, they occasionally formulate theories that are disconcerting to those who want to maintain "authority" in the classroom. Thus, the recent controversy over teaching a literary canon and classes in western civilization helps illustrate the result of whole language - where students question rather than absorb - and where learning comes to be a very personal, reflective activity. "To study," argues Paulo Freire, "is not to consume ideas, but to create and recreate them" (4).
(On the same page: âIt seems clear that people learn best when they are progressing from whole to part so that they understand the importance of correctness and the viability of certain non-standard dialects in certain settings.â First, what the fuck is this supposed to mean? And second, I canât see something like âprogressing from whole to partâ without having flashbacks to the polemics against Hegel from one of my philosophy professors -- the direction of progression and the concomitant assignment of more basic status to that which one progresses from, he said, was what distinguished Hegelian from analytic philosophy, and the Hegelian progression from whole to part underlay all the most prominent horrors of the 20th century. It was hard enough to quibble with that then, but it gets harder every time I see someone try to shore up nonsense with that âHegelianâ formula.)
Edelsky 1993 (doi:10.2307/3587486):
Whole language (WL) is, first of all, a perspective-in-practice, anchored in a vision of an equitable, democratic, diverse society. A WL perspective highlights theoretical and philosophical notions about language and language learning, knowledge, and reality. In a WL perspective, language is an exquisite human tool for making (not finding) meaning. The WL view is that what people learn when they learn a language is not separate parts (words, sounds, sentences) but a supersystem of social practices whose conventions and systematicity both constrain and liberate. And the way people acquire that system or are acquired by it (Gee, 1990) is not through doing exercises so that they can really use it later but rather by actually using it as best they can with others who are using it with them, showing them how it works and what it is for (Smith, 1981). ...
Appropriating the label, the jargon, or the typical materials and activities of WL without taking on the liberatory (and therefore status-quo-disrupting) political vision, and without adopting a WL theoretical perspective, is a sure way to prevent genuine change.
And from the sewer of journalism, Metcalf 2002:
Why the infatuation with testing? For its most conservative enthusiasts, testing makes sense as a lone solution to school failure because, they insist, adequate resources are already in place, and only the threat of exposure and censure is necessary for schools to succeed. Moreover, among those who style themselves "compassionate conservatives," education has become a sentimental and, all things considered, cheap way to talk about equalizing opportunity without committing to substantial income redistribution. Liberal faddishness, not chronic underfunding of poorer schools or child poverty itself, is blamed for underachievement: "Child-centered" education, "progressive" education or "whole language"--each has been singled out as a social menace that can be vanquished only by applying a more rational, results-oriented and business-minded approach to public education. ...
Why is the same conservative constituency that loves testing even more moonstruck by phonics? For starters, phonics is traditional and rote--the pupil begins by sounding out letters, then works through vocabulary drills, then short passages using the learned vocabulary. Furthermore, to teach phonics you need a textbook and usually a series of items--worksheets, tests, teacher's editions--that constitute an elaborate purchase for a school district and a profitable product line for a publisher. In addition, heavily scripted phonics programs are routinely marketed as compensation for bad teachers. (What's not mentioned is that they often repel, and even drive out, good teachers.) Finally, as Gerald Coles, author of Reading Lessons: The Debate Over Literacy, points out, "Phonics is a way of thinking about illiteracy that doesn't involve thinking about larger social injustices. To cure illiteracy, presumably all children need is a new set of textbooks."
Whole-language theory isnât as popular now as it used to be. But the underlying Lysenkoist tendency has taken strong root in L2 education, which is why most of the people in my second-year German class couldnât properly decline the definite article.
Sometimes you just have to drill.

How To Convert M4A To WAV In Ubuntu
To make use of the WV conversion feature simply add the information you want to convert to WV. Then click on combo-field to choose "WV" because the output format. Now click on the ⊠button (high lighted in the image above) to get some extra options for your MP3 format. This is really easy. Just drag to whichever side you want. Prime quality or low or somewhere in between. Click OKAY if you end up finished. Now, back within the Converter Setup window, click on OK again. Foobar will ask you to locate If you do not have this, you can obtain it right here Just extract it someplace and level Foobar to it. I all the time hold lame in my Program Information folder. Click Open and Foobar will begin changing. A converter that means that you can extract audio knowledge from CDs would possibly make it easier to save your audio in a extra helpful format. This is helpful you most likely have downloaded a number of movies from Youtube and need convert them together wv2flac converter windows in a single go. Beneath will current a step-by-step guide on the best way to convert wv to wav converter online video to MP3, it moreover applies to rework WV to WAV, FLAC, APE, AIFF, WMA, Apple Lossless ALAC M4A, AC3 and and so on.
Download and set up the correct model to your pc, launch the WV Converter. Drag the WV information to the program. Batch conversion is enabled; you possibly can add a number of WV audio recordsdata to the Converter at one go. If you are not utilizing Foobar, there's a command line utility () inside the wavpack zip file that can be used to import ID3V2 tags from DSF information to the compressed wv recordsdata. For directions on how one can use it read the included wavpack_doc.html. Click Convert button to start to convert WV to WAV or other audio format you desired. A conversion dialog will seem to indicate the progress of wv to wav conversion If you want to stop the process, please click on Cease button. After the conversion, you may click the Output Folder button to get the converted recordsdata and switch to your iPod, iPad, iPhone, mp3 player or onerous driver. Yep! I already skilled it after I had it connected to the analyzer. With the AVR, wavpack now plays in silence (it's detected as 2 channel DTS). Let me see whether I've any 48kHz DTS music information. Mono , however on this state of affairs solely WAV audio is supported, as different codecs aren't but ported to C#. Kigo Video Converter is designed primarily for video conversion but can also be suitable for MP3 needs. It's particularly designed with the needs of iPods, iPhones, Archos and other major transportable audio devices in thoughts. Some software supports the format natively (like Jack! The Knife ), while others require plugins. The official WavPack web site affords plugins for Winamp , Nero Burning ROM , MediaChest 2.1, Foobar 2000 and several other different functions, as well as a DirectShow filter. 5 Asunder allows ripping Audio CDs straight into Wavpack files. Another free instrument, TMKK's XLD or X Lossless Decoder, is a cornucopia of audio instruments. While it handles fewer file codecs than Max does, it has one large feature that different such programs lack: it may possibly exploit cue sheetsâtexts information that file information about the beginnings and ends of tracks for albums ripped as a single file. Cue sheets are used to keep away from gaps inherent in MP3 information (iTunes and the iPod now assist gapless playback, but not all hardware and software program do). Pristine Classical, for wv to wav converter online video example, sells its MP3s as single information, as a result of the small gap firstly and finish of MP3s can lead to highly irritating breaks in continuous music." To split a file with a cue sheet, open thecue file in XLD, choose the appropriate music file, then click on Decode; XLD will cut up or decode the file in line with the preferences you've set for its output format.
Stellar is appropriate with 7 of the most well-liked audio file formatsâMP3, MP4, WMA, WAV, AAC, OGG, and FLAC. Not as broad because the one for the highest converters, but ok to convert most of the common audio files. The program is also capable of extracting audio information from video recordsdata. And simply as the name implies, it does a stellar job changing video file codecs to different formats.Free Any Video Converter can be a free video to audio converter that can extract audio from video and convert audio to other audio codecs including MP3, Flac, WMA, M4A, OGG, WAVE and AAC. Embed useful pre-defined choices to decide on and fully customise setting by manually getting into a price. It additionally supports to obtain on-line movies in bulk from YouTube, Nicovideo and extra standard websites, convert YouTube movies to audio format.MediaHuman audio converter is neat with a minimalistic design that is straightforward to work with. Its simplicity makes it a very helpful audio converter software. Just drag and drop the audio you want to convert, select the output format and Media Human will take it from there. It even allows you to set the bitrate earlier than the conversion begins. It helps an extended listing of 26 audio enter codecs including MP3, WAV, FLAC, and AAC. Supported output formats include WAV, MP3, FLAC, M4R, ALAC, AIFF, AC3, WMA and AAC.

Future Of Data Science
What is data science?
Data science is a field that uses scientific method, process, algorithms and system to extract knowledge from data in various forms, structural, unstructured it is similar to data mining.
Data science is a concept to unify statistic, data analysis, machine learning and their related method in order to understand actual phenomena with data .It employs theory and techniques drawn from many field within the context of mathematics, statistics, information science and computer science
How to learn data science
Data science is a very practical field, and so itâs so important to apply theoretical knowledge that you have gathered. For example, when you learn starts, donât just sit and read about it .see how it can be done with a programming language such as python, which a very popular language for beginners, find a data set and apply these concept on the data. Including other language like
1 linear algebra and calculus âfor these refer to the book called advanced engineering mathematics by kreyszig. The various topics that you need to brush up your understanding in are hyper parameters, regularization function, cluster analyses are few topics under this domain and which is important for machine learning
2 vector calculus
3 Statisticsâgo on learning statistics on various sites like udacity, khan academy, courser. They provide detailed overview on this topic which is a vital topic under data science.
4 programming language---The most widely preferred open source statistical tools are âRâ and âPythonâ.
FOR R--start learning libraries like dplyr, tidyr, data table for data manipulation and ggplot2 for visualization which has the same syntax as R.in fact the visualization in ggplot2 is way better than that of matplotib
Go to kaggle and download data sets so that you can practice the concept that you have studied and build project and put up on your Git profile Â
How To Prepare for the Future of Data Science
There are many ways companies can and should prepare for the future of data science. These include creating a culture for using machine learning models and their output, standardize and digitize processes, experimenting with a cloud infrastructure solution, have an agile approach to data science projects and creating dedicated data science units. Being able to execute on some of these points will increase the likelihood of succeeding in a highly digitized world.
A Data Science Unit
In my previous role I was working as a data scientist for an insurance company. One of the smart moves they made was to create an analytics unit, which worked across company verticals.
This made it easier for us to reuse our skills and models on a variety of data sets. It was also a signal to the rest of the company that we had a focus on data science and that this was a prioritized issue. If a company has a certain size, creating a dedicated data science unit is definitely the right move to make.
Standardization
Standardization of processes is also important. This will make it easier to digitize and perhaps automate these processes in the future. Automation is a key driver for growth, making it much easier to scale. An added bonus is that the data collected from automated processes is usually a lot less messy and less error prone than data collected from manual processes. Since an important enabler of data science models is access to good data, this will help make the models better.
Adoption of Data Science                 Â
There should also be a culture in the company for adopting the use of machine learning algorithms and using their output in business decisions. This is of course often easier said than done since many employees might fear that the algorithms are making them obsolete.
It is therefore critical that there be a strong focus on how employees can use their existing skill set alongside algorithms to make more high-level and tactical business decisions, as this combination of human and machine is likely to be the future of work in many occupations. It will probably be more than a few years before the machine learning algorithms are able to navigate alone and make superhuman decisions in an open world setting, meaning mass unemployment due to the rise of the machines is not a likely scenario in the near future.
Always Experiment
With new data being generated from IoT sources, it is important to explore new data sets and see how they can be used to augment your existing models. There is a constant flow of new data waiting to be discovered.
Perhaps including two new variables from an obscure data set into your model will increase the precision of the leads generating model by 5%âââand perhaps not. The point is to always experiment and not be afraid to fail. Like all other scientific inquires, failed attempts abound, and the winners are those who keep on trying.
Create an environment that promotes experimentation and that tries to make incremental improvements to existing business processes. This will make it easier for data scientist to introduce new models and will also set the focus on the smaller improvements, which are a lot less risky than the larger grand visions. Remember, data science is still a lot like software development and the more complex the project becomes the more likely it is to fail.
Try building an app that your customers or suppliers can use to interact with your services. This will make it easier to gather relevant data. Create incentives to promote usage of the app which will increase the amount of data being generated. It is also imperative that the UX of the app be appealing and promotes use.
We might need to venture outside of our comfort zones to take on the opportunities and challenges that this digital gold brings. As the amount of data continues to grow, machine learning algorithms get smarter and our computational abilities improve, we will need to adapt. Hopefully, by creating a strong environment for using data science your company will be better prepared for what the future will bring.
Applications / Uses of Data Science
Using data science, companies have become intelligent enough to push & sell products as per customerâs purchasing power & interest. Hereâs how they are ruling our hearts and minds:
Internet Search
When we speak of search, we think âGoogleâ. Right? But there are many other search engines like Yahoo, Bing, Ask, AOL, Duckduckgo etc. All these search engines (including Google) make use of data science algorithms to deliver the best result for our searched query in fraction of seconds. Considering the fact that, Google processes more than 20 petabytes of data every day. Had there been no data science, Google wouldnât have been the âGoogleâ we know today.

Digital Advertisements (Targeted Advertising and re-targeting)
If you thought Search would have been the biggest application of data science and machine learning, here is a challenger â the entire digital marketing spectrum. Starting from the display banners on various websites to the digital bill boards at the airports â almost all of them are decided by using data science algorithms.
This is the reason why digital ads have been able to get a lot higher CTR than traditional advertisements. They can be targeted based on users past behavior.Â
Speech Recognition
Some of the best example of speech recognition products are Google Voice, Siri, Cortana etc. Using speech recognition feature, even if you are not in position to type a message, your life wouldnât stop. Simply speak out the message and it will be converted to text. However, at times, you would realize, speech recognition doesnât perform accurately.
Image Recognition
You upload your image with friends on Facebook and you start getting suggestions to tag your friends. This automatic tag suggestion feature uses face recognition algorithm. Similarly, while using whats app web, you scan a bar code in your web browser using your mobile phone. In addition, Google provides you the option to search for images by uploading them. It uses image recognition and provides related search results.
Gaming
EA Sports, Zynga, Sony, Nintendo, Activision-Blizzard have led gaming experience to the next level using data science. Games are now designed using machine learning algorithms which improve / upgrade themselves as the player moves up to a higher level. In motion gaming also, your opponent (computer) analyzes your previous moves and accordingly shapes up its game.
Fraud and Risk Detection
One of the first applications of data science originated from Finance discipline. Companies were fed up of bad debts and losses every year. However, they had a lot of data which use to get collected during the initial paper work while sanctioning loans. They decided to bring in data science practices in order to rescue them out of losses. Over the years, banking companies learned to divide and conquer data via customer profiling, past expenditures and other essential variables to analyze the probabilities of risk and default. Moreover, it also helped them to push their banking products based on customerâs purchasing power
Airline Route Planning
Airline Industry across the world is known to bear heavy losses. Except a few airline service providers, companies are struggling to maintain their occupancy ratio and operating profits. With high rise in air fuel prices and need to offer heavy discounts to customers has further made the situation worse. It wasnât for long when airlines companies started using data science to identify the strategic areas of improvements. Now using data science, the airline companies can:
1.  Predict flight delay
2.  Decide which class of airplanes to buy
3.  Whether to directly land at the destination, or take a halt in between (For example: A flight can have a direct route from New Delhi to New York. Alternatively, it can also choose to halt in any country.)
4.  Effectively drive customer loyalty programs
Southwest Airlines, Alaska Airlines are among the top companies whoâve embraced data science to bring changes in their way of working
Coming Up In Future
Though, not much has been reveled about them except the prototypes, and neither I know when they would be available for a common manâs disposal. Hence, We need to wait and watch how far Google can become successful in their self driving cars project.Â

HERE'S WHAT I JUST REALIZED ABOUT LANGUAGES
The latter is much more expensive. Once the engine was going, it would be even harder than making the message look innocent. It definitely has a flavor of its own though. This is why we even hear about new languages like Perl and Python, the claim of the Python hackers seems to be so. In the best case, both components of the vector contribute to your company's DNA: the unscalable things you have to extract parameters manually in Perl. But if we get good enough at filtering out spam, it will be wasted. Some, slightly, but if we hadn't used Lisp, we wouldn't have been able to work on big problems they don't really like, and grad school is thus synonymous with procrastination. Though ITA is also in a sense, at least. In fact, I've found that you can filter present-day spam, because spam evolves. You could use a Bayesian filter to rate the site just as you would an email, and it's not just the way offices look that's bleak.
I also think that the more different kinds of software being used simultaneously. 047225013 mandatory 0. That's the San Andreas Fault. What makes him unique is his sense of design. In theory. A bottom-up programming. That would be a good idea to stop thinking of startup ideas as scalars. Almost all startups are fragile initially. That's incremented by, not plus. He didn't foresee the future of business is the assumption that people working for love often surpass those working for money, but it is enough in simple cases like this.
There's also a variant where one has no place to work. Another reason people don't work on big things, you seem to have become professional fundraisers who do a little research on the side. But all languages are not equivalent, and I think I can prove this to you without even getting into the differences between them. So if auto-retrieving filters. As often happens, Ron discovered how to be the early adopters, you'll no longer have a perfect initial market handed to you on a platter. Microsoft, they're losing. Some startups could be entirely manual at first. 116539136 california 0. When we approached merchants asking if they wanted to use our software. I currently consider alphanumeric characters, dashes, apostrophes, and dollar signs to be part of tokens, and the best stuff prevails. The fifteen most interesting words in this spam are: qvp0045 indira mx-05 intimail $7500 freeyankeedom cdo bluefoxmedia jpg unsecured platinum 3d0 qves 7c5 7c266675 The words are a mix of stuff from the headers and from the message body, which is the most influential founder not just for me but for most people you could ask.
If you're controlling them, they're not drifting. Or we can improve it, which usually means encrusting it with gratuitous ornament. She had only been in America for a couple weeks and hadn't seen much of the time. The most common way to do it. It's just a more extreme variant where you don't just use your software, but are your software. 8921298 organization 0. They're the skiers who ski on the diamond slopes.
Apple products the way they'd await new books by a popular novelist. And God help you if you fire anyone. Curiously, a filter based on word pairs see below might well catch this one: cost effective, setup fee, money backâpretty incriminating stuff. Eric Migicovsky of Pebble said one of things he learned was how valuable it was to source good screws. It's very much worth seeing inside if you can make it happen. When I see patterns in my programs, I consider it a great treat to fly to Europe and spend a couple hours implementing it and then resume building the site. But these had had literally orders of magnitude more possibilities than their competitors, who apparently are still using mainframe-era programming language. Perhaps not everyone can make an equally dramatic mark on the world; that might be too much of a political liability just to give the startups the money, though. Everyone who's worked on difficult problems is probably familiar with the phenomenon of working hard to figure something out, failing, and then suddenly seeing the answer a bit later while doing something else.1 There are only a handful of them, there are other ways to arrange that relationship.
What are the most important thing about a car is the image it projects. A few years ago an Italian friend of mine travelled by train from Boston to Providence. I read, say, approach offers as in this approach offers having a probability of. Well, that's news to no one. They wouldn't seem bad to the Bayesian filters as ever, no matter how cozy the terms. 99 respectively, and a notation for functions expressed as lists, then you can build all the rest of the text in a non-German email in that they often consist of several words stuck together. In that form it only had a potential market of a few thousand hobbyists as they were taking professional photos of their first hosts' apartments. Spam is mostly sales pitches, spam becomes less effective as a marketing vehicle, and fewer businesses want to use it. And probably the only people who can manage that are the people who are genuinely good. Would that kill spam?

Skype 6 and 7 Upgrade Solution
Hey guys how you doing I wanted to do this video here. After a little bit of a scary experience, I just had with skype technical support, i was able to actually chat with them who, as you know, it's now obviously owned by microsoft, and i don't know who what happened initially, my my support call started with sarah and Then Sarah asked me if she could connect to my machine and when Sarah finally connected to my machine she became Jane.
So I'm not sure if Sarah is jen or Jenny Shara, but either way they got into my system to help me out and then requested. Control of my system to actually help me uninstall - and this is after i told them in detail exactly what's wrong and that i do not have the ability to uninstall skype from a computer couldn't even find my control panel in in windows, which scared me at which Point i disabled the session and say thank you. I need your help. However, I still had the same issue here with skype and I finally figured out how to resolve it, and I wanted to share with anybody you own skype, 69. 0.160, how to understand skype, if you can't do it, I have. I don't, have an uninstaller visible in my control panel, which I'll show you real quick. You know, as you can see here, if I just put in the word skype, it doesn't show up.
So there's no way for me to uninstall skype and when I actually run skype from the desktop it will come up here and once I enter my information, it will sign me in and immediately ask for the upgrade. So at this point I'm going back to the skype site - I mean that upgrade feature is not going to help us. It'S just going to fail and you're going to get an error over and over there's no way past that so what we want to do is go back to skype, calm and download the latest version for windows 7 or 8, but we want the desktop version.
We don't want the app there's actually two versions of skype right now, as you may know, an app version and an actual desktop version, and it's kind of weird to run both at the same time, because the app you get double notifications, there's a slight delay between The two, so you can get annoying you kind of, have to decide if you want to run the app which doesn't really allow you to multitask, because it fills your entire screen and you have to then just skype. You can't do other things if you're trying to chat, which is why i prefer the desktop. I can still have it minimized in the corner and continue my work while talking to my friends.
So when you just go to skype calm and try to download what they have here, they force you to basically get skype for windows 8, which I don't want. I'M going to text my operating system and it goes takes me straight to the Windows Store. I mean this is definitely not what I want so there's no way to just easily get to the desktop version. I'M not sure why they force people to do that. The only way to actually get there, i mean, i'm sure, there's a hidden link somewhere on skype com, but the best way to do it is just just search skype desktop download. You know if you just search that in google you'll find it as your second link here and i'm just going to click on download skype for windows, and it will take me to the desktop version of it. You can see here it's a different button.
It'S is get skype for windows desktop. So when i download this file, obviously it's going to show the little exe here. It'S 33 megabytes that's coming down and when i actually run this file, it's going to start to extract the data to a hidden folder on my machine. That'S located and see program data, it's pretty trivial and then it's going to start to extract. So here's that same error that I typically get when i click the Upgrade button in skype and it failed again. The good news is that this time I was able to capture the image I that I need to fix this problem. The image - I is the Microsoft installer that contains the information for the latest version of skype.
It'S really just a skype exe file and I now need to go find that installer and then extract it. So I'm going to close this and go back to my computer and just go to see program data if you just enter it like that, you'll be able to find it and once you're on this list just scroll down until you find the skype folder click on That and you'll notice that there are some folders here that were created with some interesting names, basically had let up registry folder names and what we want to do is open up the most recent version if i go to date modified some reason these are.
Oh, you know what these are old folders and they probably had the same folder name so skype just automatically downloaded the file into an older folder name. If you have not tried this before, you might not even see these. I have them because i've tried several times so just ignore the date here. If you do this today, for the first time your date will show the actual day, so I'm just going to try and find it manually real quick here we go so there's my skype. A Miss I'm, this is the actual date. 1 9 2014 date modified. So this is the file that I'm looking for and what I need now is a tool to extract this msi and the way to do that is you want to use a utility here: cold, less msi.
I don't know I've code like Les Miserable, but for some app is pretty funny just download it. It'S free, install it down. I extract it onto your desktop. It puts it into a little folder like this. You open it up and there's the files that comes in that and that down. You then run less msi run the exe file, go to file and say open and then go and open up that skype mas. I I just showed you guys in the program data folder, just open up that file and it will show you the contents of that installer in this list year. Alright, so now I've got all my files and there's a bunch of stuff in here. That'S just related to the image stoller this in PNG files. Here, it's all part of just what the Installer looks like graphics.
You can see there's the actual. So there's like a cloud graphic. You know it's all part of the skype installer of how its packaged the only file were interested in. Is this one, this guy bxe the way to fix that you can see? This is 66 11. So it's the most recent version, so all I'm going to do now is: let's close the program data. Let me go back to my computer and in the top here i'm going to enter c program files - x86. Let'S go in there and i'm going to scroll down this list. This is where the programs are actually installed until I find skype there. It is - and you can see here when you, when you open up skype, there's a bunch of stuff in your the updater or you know, don't worry about that for whatever reason, i'm not sure why skype installs it this way, but it is what it is. If you go into phone, you can see, there's the exe that we actually want to replace with the new one.
Actually, this is the CXC. So before we go any further, I just want to bring my skype window back into player, because you do want to make sure that you have exited completely out of skype and the way to do that is first, it's just say sign out. If you close it, it won't actually close guide will stay resident, as you may already know, but I'm just going to close that and then hit. Ctrl shift is skype on your windows keyboard to bring up the task manager and on the task manager.
You should be able to see skype 32-bit running here in your first panel and i'm going to right click on that and just say in task and that will actually force quit skype so right now the exe is no longer running. If you do not do that, you will not be able to override the sky. Pxe here will complain so file already in use, so make sure you quit skype and now we're going to go back here and we're really just going to try and extract as one file so here at the very bottom. Just click on extract - and you know four to be safe - I'm going to go to my desktop and create a new folder here, I'm just going to pull it skype.
Six point 11, and you can see here, is exactly what what the what the onions, what this extractor does. It basically replicates the structure of where this file should be placed, and what I'm going to do now is just drag. The new file over from this extracted folder to my installed version in program files and obviously it's going to want to replace, come on, come with an administrator message here, which is fine, just say, continue and there you go. So, let's see what happens if i run skype again, it should not want to upgrade anymore. Let me just sign in again and let's see if we still get that message nothing so far. Well, this is difficult. It'S go to help.
This is, as you can see, the new version, six point: eleven, oh one or two, so this solves the issue in terms of getting the latest version of skype running on your machine. It also gets rid of that annoying upgrade message that pops up each time skype loads, but it obviously doesn't do. Is it doesn't allow me to uninstall it? It'S still going to not show the skype as a listed uninstall option in my control panel. So that's just you know, it is what it is. Maybe I'll put that into a different video wonder when I find it. The only way to get that working would be to actually reinstall skype, so that windows can recreate those registry entries correctly for it to show up in that list in the first place. So it's not going to work this way, but hey you know what we don't really need it anymore, because skype is working and I'm not going to. I stole it anyway. Good luck to everybody, and I hope this helped. You write x,

DIFFERENT TYPES OF CORONAS AND MACHINE LEARNING
CLASSIFICATION OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF CORONAS USINGÂ PARAMETRIZATION OF IMAGES AND MACHINE LEARNING
Igor Kononenko, Matjaz Bevk, Sasa Sadikov, Luka Sajn University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Computer and Information Science, Ljubljana, Slovenia Abstract We describe the development of computer classifiers for various types of coronas. In particular, we were interested to develop an algorithm for detection of coronas of people in altered states of consciousness (two-classes problem). Such coronas are known to have rings (double coronas), special branch-like structure of streamers and/or curious spots. Besides detecting altered states of consciousness we were interested also to classify various types of coronas (six-classes problem). We used several approaches to parametrization of images: statistical approach, principal component analysis, association rules and GDV software approach extended with several additional parameters. For the development of the classifiers we used various machine learning algorithms: learning of decision trees, naĂŻve Bayesian classifier, K-nearest neighbors classifier, Support vector machine, neural networks, and Kernel Density classifier. We compared results of computer algorithms with the human expertâs accuracy (about 77% for the two-classes problem and about 60% for the six-classes problem). Results show that computer algorithms can achieve the same or even better accuracy than that of human experts (best results were up to 85% for the two-classes problem and up to 65% for the six-classes problem). 1. Introduction Recently developed technology by dr. Korotkov (1998) from Technical University in St.Petersburg, based on the Kirlian effect, for recording the human bio-electromagnetic field (aura) using the Gas Discharge Visualization (GDV) technique provides potentially useful information about the biophysical and/or psychical state of the recorded person. In order to make the unbiased decisions about the state of the person we want to be able to develop the computer algorithm for extracting information/describing/classifying/making decisions about the state of the person from the recorded coronas of fingertips. The aim of our study is to differentiate 6 types of coronas, 3 types in normal state of consciousness: Ia, Ib, Ic (pictures were recorded with single GDV camera in Ljubljana, all with the same settings of parameters, classification into 3 types was done manually): ï¶Â Ia â harmonious energy state (120 coronas) ï¶Â Ib â non-homogenous but still energetically full (93 coronas)ï¶Â Ic â energetically poor (76 coronas) and 3 types in altered states of consciousness (pictures obtained from dr. Korotkov, recorded by different GDV cameras with different settings of parameters and pictures were not normalized â they were of variable size): ï¶ Â Rings â double coronas (we added 7 pictures of double coronas recorded in Ljubljana) (90 coronas)ï¶ Â Branches â long streamers branching in various directions (74 coronas) ï¶Â Spots â unusual spots (51 coronas) Our aim is to differentiate normal from altered state of consciousness (2 classes) and to differentiate among all 6 types of coronas (6 classes). Figure 1 provides example coronas for each type.
GDV Corona's types 2. The methodology We first had to preprocess all the pictures so that all were of equal size (320 x 240). We then described the pictures with various sets of numerical parameters (attributes) with five different parametrization algorithms (described in more detail in the next section): a) IP (Image Processor â 22 attributes), b) PCA (Principal Component Analysis), c) Association Rules, d) GDV Assistant with some basic GDV parameters, e)GDV Assistant with additional parameters. Therefore we had available 5 different learning sets for two-classes problem: altered (one of Rings, Spots, and Branches) versus non- altered (one of Ia, Ib, Ic) state of consciousness. Some of the sets were used also as six-classes problems (differentiating among all six different types of coronas). We tried to solve some of the above classification tasks by using various machine learning algorithms as implemented in Weka system (Witten and Frank, 2000): ï· Â Quinlan's (1993) C4.5 algorithm for generating decision trees;ï· Â K-nearest neighbor classifier by Aha, D., and D. Kibler (1991);ï· Â Simple Kernel Density classifier;ï· Â NaĂŻve Bayesian classifier using estimator classes: Numeric estimator precision valuesare chosen based on analysis of the training data. For this reason, the classifier is not an Updateable Classifier (which in typical usage are initialized with zero training instances, see (John and Langley, 1995));ï· Â SMO implements John C. Platt's sequential minimal optimization algorithm for training a support vector classifier using polynomial kernels. It transforms the output of SVM Types Ia, Ib and Icâ normal state of consciousness into probabilities by applying a standard sigmoid function that is not fitted to the data. This implementation globally replaces all missing values and transforms nominal attributes into binary ones (see Platt, 1998; Keerthi et al., 2001); ï·Â Neural networks: standard multilayared feedforward neural network with backpropagation of errors learning mechanism (Rumelhart et al., 1986). SMO algorithm can be used only for two-classes problems, while the other algorithms can be used on two-classes and on six-classes problems. Extracting Ensoniq SQ-80 Disk Images
Another Ensoniq SQ-80 project - to extract SQ80 disk images on a PC for the purposes of searching contents and extracting patches.
The project came about because I was organising my patches with a view to distributing some of the better ones. I have been using the wonderful SQ8L VST plugin as a librarian. It is not only an excellent emulation of the SQ80, but loads SYSEX dumps and allows the creation of large libraries. I have a lot of patches on disk, and want to make sure some of the ones that have ended up in my banks are not actually 3rd party. Large disks would have been a lot of work to go through manually, sending a SYSEX dump for each bank over MIDI to a computer one by one. As floppy disks start to fail, and floppy disk drives and the computers that they can be installed in become harder to find this is also an insurance policy for archival purposes.
Enter the sq80toolkit by Rainer Buchty. This works really well at what it does, which is make disk images. However, it didnât have the functionality I needed, namely extracting individual banks/patches as SYSEX data.
So what I needed was a tool that could read the disk images, extract the needed data from them, and convert it to SYSEX format. I have written a command line tool - extract_sq80 - to do this and have open sourced it. Itâs in python and should run on just about any platform.
It also enables just about anyone to use the disk images that are available on Rainerâs page (and possibly elsewhere?) without having access to a floppy drive and the increasingly elusive double density 3 1/2âł floppies.
Visit the github to download the extract_sq80 tool here.
A quick step by step HOWTO:
You need a linux PC with a floppy drive in it to install the sq80toolkit on. I have no idea if sq80toolkit will work on a USB floppy drive, but I suspect it might not. I built a legacy hardware linux machine specially for this (which was a reasonable project in itself given failing hardware etc.)
Install the sq80toolkit. I also needed to install âfdutilsâ, which I did using my linux distributionâs package manager. There is a precompiled version of sq80toolkit, but I compiled the tool from source and had to make one change to the source. This was was to remove the check on line 74 of sq80dump.c which sees if the ioctl call fails. It was failing at run time with it on, but worked fine without it. Iâm guessing this is something to do with modern linux kernels?
Once sq80toolkit is installed you can extract a disk image using the following command:
sq80dump -if=/dev/fd0 -of=IMAGE_FILE.img
/dev/fd0 indicates which floppy drive contains the disk image, the first one in this case.
The extract_sq80.py tool can be downloaded from the github. It needs python to be installed, but should run without any other dependencies.
You can then use extract_sq80.py to list the contents of the image generated in step 3, and extract whatever you need. It currently doesnât know anything about sequences, but can extract banks or individual programs, either all at once, or individually. It also has a âvirtual bankâ mode, where it combines all of the individual programs into banks so that you donât have to deal with lots of individual programs in separate files. Some example commands are:
extract_sq80.py IMAGE_FILE.img bank --dump syx
which extracts all banks from the image in SYSEX format. Without the '--dump syx' option, it will just list them.
extract_sq80.py IMAGE_FILE.img bank --dump bin -n 2
extracts just the second bank from the image in the binary PCB format used by the SQ80 natively.
extract_sq80.py IMAGE_FILE.img prog --list
lists all of the individual programs in a more human readable format (5 programs per line, rather than one).
extract_sq80.py IMAGE_FILE.img bank --list > IMAGE_FILE_banks.txt
lists all of the banks and save the output to a text file. The --list option when used in bank mode will list all of the programs within each bank as well.
extract_sq80.py IMAGE_FILE.img virtbank -d syx
extracts all of the individual programs in up to 4 âvirtual banksâ, as sysex files.
extract_sq80.py --help
gives full usage information, so please refer to that for a more complete description.
On Linux, itâs very easy to send the resulting SYSEX files to the synth. I do it like this:
amidi -p hw:2,0,0 -s BANK01.syx
where hw:2,0,0 is the MIDI port, and BANK01.syx is the sysex file dumped by extract_sq80 using the â--dump syxâ option.
amidi -l
gives you a list of all the MIDI ports available on your system.
Any number of tools (MIDIOx etc) can be used to do a similar thing on Windows. The SQ8L VST plugin will also read in the .syx files as is.
Please feel free to get in touch with any questions/comments.

Mac OS High Sierra makes the Mac a teeny, tiny bit better â for free

Apple CEO Tim Cook (R) views the MacBook Pro in the demo room after an Apple media event in Cupertino, California, U.S. REUTERS/Beck Diefenbach
Itâs no shock that Apple puts most of its effort into improving the iPhone. The iPhone is a cash cow big enough to be heard from the moon.
The Mac, on the other hand, constitutes only a puny 12 percent of Appleâs revenue.
So Mac fans should be grateful, I guess, that the mothership still releases another free version of the Mac OS every fall. These upgrades (usually) make all of our Macs better without our having to spend a penny.
The one Apple released this week (available in the Mac app store) is called Mac OS High Sierra (macOS 10.13). As the new name suggests, itâs just a refinement of last yearâs Mac OS Sierra. In fact, you could sum up whatâs new in an article about as short as this one.
Safari upgrades
Apple has continued to work on Safari, its Web browser, and says that the new version is the fastest desktop Web browser in the world.
It also uses less power. Apple claims that you can watch Netflix for two hours longer in Safari than other browsers. In practice, thatâs close to true. My expensive MacBook Pro gets absolutely pathetic battery lifeâabout 3 hours per charge when I use Chrome as my browser. Using Safari instead, I get four hours. Woo!
Maybe even more thrilling to the worldâs Internet surfers (and less thrilling to advertisers), Safari can now auto-block auto-play videos. Now, no video begins playing unless you click it. For each Web site, you can choose Safari->Settings for This Website and specify that videos are never allowed to play; always allowed; or not allowed only if they have sound.
In Safari, you can establish all of these settings on a per-Website basis. Itâs pretty awesome.
This feature works beautifully, and it makes the Internet a calmer place. It easily auto-paused videos on CNET, CNN, Bloomberg, and, yes, even Yahoo. (If you canât seem to get it to work, itâs probably because you have an ad blocker like AdBlock Plus. Those extensions seem to interfere with Safariâs new feature.)
Thatâs not the only way Safari will frustrate advertisers. Apple says that âSafari now uses machine learning to identify advertisers and others who track your online behavior, and removes the crossâsite tracking data they leave behind.â
This is cool, too: You can create different viewing settings for different sites. You might like the New York Times site to appear with larger text, Flash turned on for Dilbert.com, and so on. Page zoom, Reader view, location services, and use of your camera and microphone are among the settings memorized for each site.
And if you like the Reader viewâwhich hides all ads, navigation stuff, blinking stuff, competing colors and fontsâyou can now tell Safari to use it for everything. Every time you open an article that works with Reader, it pops into that format automatically. You end up with far fewer migraines from just trying to surf the Web.
Photos
This is a big one. Ladies and gentlemen, the Photos app is finally ready for prime time.
The editing tools have been redesigned and goosed nearly to Photoshop levels; you can now manipulate the Curves of a photoâs histogram, or edit only the reds (for example) in a photo.
Editing in the new Photos is both easier and more powerful.
I love that the Auto-Fix button is now right on the Photos main toolbar. This is the editing control most people use most of the timeâit does a very good job at fixing the color, exposure, and contrast values for a photoâand now you donât have to heave into Editing mode to apply it to a photo, or a whole batch of them.
If you still want to do your editing in Photoshop (or any other external program), Apple has finally restored this fantastic feature (which was in iPhoto) to Photos. Better yet, the changes you make in that app are non-destructiveâyou can undo them at any time. In other words, you can use Photos for its superior organizational and sharing tools, but Photoshop for editing.
A new Imports view shows not just the latest batch of imported photos, but the batch before that, and the batch before that, and so on. And, inevitably, there are now Instagram-style filters.
The redesigned Photos has a cleaner, well organized sidebar at left.
You can now filter your view by Favorites, photos youâve edited, only movies, only stills, and so on. The Faces feature, which knows whoâs in each photo, has been improved, and the face-categorizing youâve done on the Mac gets auto-synced to your phone.
The Photos feature, called Memories (automatically grouped and curated slideshows with music), is much smarter now. Instead of grouping photos only by event or location, they now auto-recognize and auto-build slideshows of your pets, babies, outdoor activities, performances, weddings, birthdays, and sports games.
Apple has opened up its âorder your photos printed on mousepads, books, calendars, etc.â feature to other companies. Soon, youâll be able to install Photos extensions that permit all kinds of photo-product ordering.
Finally, Apple introduces some editing options to Live Photos: weird, three-second video clips that the iPhone can capture. You can now shorten a Live Photo, mute its audio, or extract a single frame to use as a still photo. Photos can also suggest a âboomerangâ segment (bounces back and forth) or a loop (repeats over and over). And it has a new Slow Shutter filter, which (for example) blurs a babbling brook or stars moving across the sky, as though taken with a long exposure.
My one gripe: You hit the Space bar to open a videoâs thumbnail to play it. So what do you hit to play the open video? In every other video-playback program on the ever-lovinâ planet, the Space bar starts and stops video. But not in Photos. Best I can tell, you have to reach for the mouse and click the Play button.
A new file system
The file system is the underlying, invisible software that controls the management of files and folders on your Mac. For almost 20 years, Mac fans have been using one called HFS+. And now, thereâs the Apple File System, or APFS. Itâs designed for the new era of solid-state drives and increased security threats.
Most of its benefits are under the hood: Far better security (for example, more sophisticated FileVault encryption for your whole hard drive); better crash resistance; more efficient storage; and faster operation. (If youâre technically inclined, here are the details.)
The two aspects of APFS youâll probably notice first are:
You know the column that shows you how big the files and folders in a window are? Now, those numbers donât need time to appear. Theyâre instantly there.
You can now duplicate a file or a folder instantly, no matter how big it is.
APFS is what Apple uses on iPhones and iPads already, so itâs already had some time in the fieldâand now itâs on the Mac, too.
(Well, at least itâs on Macs with solid-state drives like MacBook laptops. APFS doesnât yet auto-convert traditional spinning hard drives, Apple Fusion drives, or external drives. You can manually convert spinning hard drives in the Disk Utility program, though.)
Notes
The Notes app has continued to improve:
Pin your best Notes. In the Notes app, you can now pin your most used notes (to do lists, grocery lists, etc.) to the top of the list, so they donât get sorted down chronologically as they do now. Unfortunately, they donât show up on your iPhone like that.
In the new Notes, you can âpinâ the most important notes so that they always appear at the top of the list.
Tables. Yes! You can now add a table to a Note. Great for bake-sale assignments, sports scores, and so on.
Misc
Smaller multimedia. In both iOS 11 and Mac OS High Sierra, Apple offers new file formats that permit your photos and videos to look the same as before, but to consume only half the space. This is a huge deal for anyone whose phone or Mac is constantly filled up. For photos, itâs called the High Efficiency Image File Format (HEIF); for videos, itâs the High Efficiency Video Codec (HEVC, or h.265). In theory, when you export these photos and videos, they convert to standard formats like JPEG and h.264.
Mail enhancements. When you search in Mail, a Top Hits section presents the messages Mail thinks are the best matches (based on Read status, senders youâve replied to, your VIPs, and so on). Mail also offers a split-screen view when composing new messages in full-screen mode. And it stores your messages in 35 percent less disk space. More space is always welcome.
A new voice for Siri. The new male and female voices sound much more like actual people. (Theyâre the same ones that just appeared in iOS 11.)
iCloud file sharing. Finally, you can share files youâve stored on your iCloud Drive with other people, just as youâve been able to do with Dropbox for years. To do so, right-click an icon; from the shortcut menu, choose Add People. Now you can send an invitation to anyone by message, email, or whatever, and you can specify how much editing control they have. The catch, of course, is that the recipient must be using iOS 11 (on an iPhone or iPad) or Mac OS High Sierra (on a Mac).
Anything thatâs on your iCloud Drive (kind of like Appleâs version of Dropbox), you can share with someone.
Capture a FaceTime moment as a Live Photo. You can snap a 3-second snippet of a video chatâa Live Photoâfor later sharing. (You canât do so secretly, however; the other person knows. In fact, the other person can block your ability to capture altogether, in FaceTime Settings.)
Messages in iCloud. When you sign into any new Mac, iPhone, or iPad with your iCloud credentials, your entire texting history gets downloaded automatically. (As it is now, you canât see the Message transcript history with someone on a new machine.) Saving the Messages history online also saves disk space on your Mac.
Family storage sharing. You can now share an iCloud storage plan with family members.
More Spotlight wisdom. The Spotlight search feature can now provide flight arrival and departure times, terminals, gates, delays, and flight maps when you type in a flight number. It can also return multiple Wikipedia results on a single screen.
Developer goodies. Apple now offers development kits for virtual reality and augmented reality, hoping to jump-start new apps in an area where Apple is now way behind. Thereâs a new version of Metal, too, the Mac software that addresses your graphics card.
Hi-ho, High Sierra!
Two tiny things may annoy you in Mac OS High Sierra:
The Messages app no longer works with AOL Instant Messenger and Bonjour accounts.
Remember that smaller-photo-format business? Unfortunately, Photoshop doesnât yet recognize the new formats, and I ran across a few frustrating times when I took a photo with my iPhone and couldnât then edit it in Photoshop. (Exporting them a different wayâtexting them to myself instead of using AirDrop, for exampleâsolved it.)
On the other hand, there are some features youâll notice multiple times a day, including the new per-site Safari settings (like âdonât auto-play video!â), the better battery life (if you use Safari), and the fantastic Photos overhaul.
As always, the fearful of heart should wait for any glitches to be ironed out in the 10.13.1 update that will come along, no doubt, in October. But whether you upgrade now or then, youâll find that Mac OS High Sierra is a teeny, tiny upgradeâthat makes Mac life a teeny, tiny bit better.

Product review for DiVA Studio Pro7: DOLLWEAR DiVA PRO+ Dollwear Pattern Styler Studio v7i
DONâT BUY THIS.
I thought I might be able to save the hours I spend drafting bodice slopers and sleeves for my various BJDs, so I bought this software on sale. The quality of the graphic design work on the slipcovers should have tipped me off. This oneâs on me; learn from my mistake.
SAVE YOUR MONEY.
IT DOESNâT WORK.
THE SOFTWARE IS UNFINISHED.
THERE IS NO HELPFUL SUPPORT DOCUMENTATION.
I spent days trouble-shooting this software on my own and was in contact with the support team as I tried to work through the issues. I even tried it on 3 machines running different operating systems. The support staff were quick to respond to my general inquiries but I was still baffled why I was experiencing so many issues with the basic software functionality. My main PC is a custom-built gaming and graphics rig; it can definitely handle some light CAD. So I dove into the software files out of curiosity. I found a whole bunch of clutter and random shit like old crash-dumps that shouldnât have made it into the final build. I went into full Test Case mode and spent an afternoon doing unpaid QA; among the most critical issues I discovered were high failure rates on most functions, randomly crash to desktop, and it would randomly delete save files. If this software came across my desk at work; I would fail it and send it back to the developers.
Of course when I graciously listed my findings into an email to the support team and requested a patch to fix these issues, I never received a response.
Once again:
DONâT BUY THIS.
I'll be listing in detail all the issues I had with the software as I recall them (there were many!)
"Model Measurement" save files (used to generate slopers) sporadically 1) don't actually make a save file when you hit "save", and 2) sporadically delete themselves. So you have to spend another 15-20 minutes re-measuring your doll if you didn't write it all down on paper before you hit "save".
The software version is "7" but the user manual, registration EXE, and activation key provided by the maker are for version "6". The product key doesn't come with the software, either. And they don't tell you that you have to email them to request a product key (even though they sent you a physical copy of the software).
The documentation (user manual and tutorials) don't explain most of the software functionality. And because the user manual is for a previous version there are some features that are completely undocumented.
The work space functionality buttons usually don't work. Example: I'll load up a BJD measurement file and try to generate a sloper; there is a SLIM chance of that actually happening.
Actually, most of the buttons don't do anything. And there's no documentation telling me what the intended functions are. WTF?
Apparently there's something about pattern envelopes/folders for managing doll pattern projects, but there is NO DOCUMENTATION on how to use that, and it glitched up so many times when I was looking at the sample projects that I suspect it doesn't work anyway.
If the software crashes (which it does often), the process will still remain running, preventing you from relaunching immediately.
The program doesn't close properly (as acknowledged by the creator). You have to bring up your OS task manager and force-quit the program (also have to do this when it crashes). Bonus: the software Image Name isn't the same as what the software is called, so you have to scroll through and try to figure out which one it is. I solved this myself by logging out of my profile and then logging back in. It was tedious.
When you launch the software, you go through a bunch of splash screens telling you THIS IS THE PROGRAM! AGAIN! ONCE MORE! and then they make a second appearance every time you load the work space from the main menu... you know... in case you forgot what program you're running.
Too many menus. There is no reason for me to go through that many menus from launching the program to getting into the actual work space.
The Dollwear add-on was a DVD with a single ZIP file. There was no instructions on how to install it. It took me almost an hour to figure it out by skimming through unrelated tutorial videos; you need to go deep into the file tree for the Studio 7 software, navigate through ambiguously named folders, then CREATE a new folder and unzip the Dollwear file into that. And--get this--THAT IS ACTUALLY HOW THEY INTEND YOU TO INSTALL THE ADD-ON. I had to figure this out myself; there was nothing on the website, no little EXE to help you extract it in the right spot, not even text instructions on the install disc.

Psalm 96 - a new song
I need to make a list of the music I am working with before I forget what I have done. I have 35 videos on my YouTube Channel. 10 of them are from my psalms lectures (6 years ago) and the lecture on the music of the accents for the SBL regional conference I was to attend in Idaho in 2016 which I had to do remotely because of a sudden illness in the family. The last one (the Accents, Final) has had over 1100 views. The other 25 are developments of the music, one from 3 years ago, and the remainder from this year. I also have about 200 recordings of this music performed in the last century to advertise the work that Susanne Haïk-Vantoura accomplished before her death in 2000. It is difficult to put into a few words the extensive testing she did to arrive at her synthesis. That one should require a musical mind to do this is hardly surprising. She herself testifies of a long manual process of testing possibilities. In my own book, I have done a thorough statistical analysis of accent patterns and also have explained her approach against the opinions of the last 1000 years and its vastly superior explanatory and acoustic power. Humans are slow to respond and slow to change when they are sure they have an answer that can make them feel right and defend against any arguments against their established opinion. You can see her careful approach in this image of Psalm 96. She always sang the Hebrew. In the case of the Psalms it is a strict syllabic rhythm.
An extract from SHV Psalm 96 ms - You can hear a performance at this link.
My own version is not syllabic since I have mapped the Hebrew to the English text of my own translation that follows the Hebrew as closely as possible. I have used a regular 5/4 bar. I could have used other possibilities. They are infinite. I also allowed some development of the ideas but I have maintained the strophic structure of the poem itself. Adding a trumpet as she does would have been a nice idea, but I think the TTBB version works quite well. Needs a good high tenor. The ms is here, and a synthesizer film is available from YouTube below. You can note some differences in the reciting note because SHV was using the Letteris Edition (c. 1890s) of the text whereas I have used the Leningrad codex directly. And it happens that scribes, not understanding what the signs meant, over the centuries have added methegs to some words (for reasons of pronunciation) and it looks the same as the silluq, which is the tonic (according to her inferred key). My programming attempts to distinguish these two signs, but it is a soft logic. The Aleppo Codex is our best source, but it is not available by web service or even in a Unicode form.
