it’s me, streetracing requester. au where they meet a streetrace and spot mocks race for his unoriginal nickname
ok i promise i didn’t completely forget about this but i’m so sorry it took so long
so race has been a fan of racing his whole life
when he has eight his uncle took him to see a live nascar race and he was in love
he used to make soapbox cars in his garage and race them down the street with his friends
since that very day out with his uncle, he’s wanted to be a racecar driver
it scared the absolute shit out of his parents but they let him learn to drive as soon as he was old enough
let’s just say he got a lot of speeding tickets
until he got pulled over one day for speeding and after he got his ticket before he could get back on the road, a couple people walked up to his driver side door
they asked him if he was a racer and he shrugged and told them not really
but they didn’t seem convinced
so they asked him again if he’d ever raced before and he told them no
but apparently that wasn’t enough for them because a girl in the group hopped on a motorcycle and told him to follow her if he wanted to drive like that as much as he wanted
so he did
he followed the girl pretty far outside the city to a little warehouse and a huge dirt field behind it
race pulled into the warehouse behind her and there were dozens of other people inside and more cars and motorcycles than he could count
looking back on it, he was sure his jaw was probably on the floor
but the people didn’t look so friendly and, for a lanky kid with a mop of curly blonde hair, he didn’t really fit in, to say the least
that is, until the same people that brought him there, asked him if he wanted to race
que “they don’t call me racetrack higgins for nothin”, followed by a lot of disappointed looks
yet he still ended up on the track in a beat up firebird and an electric twinkle in his eyes
he didn’t really know what he was doing until some guy with a pair of dark sunglasses in an old mustang pulled up beside him
he didn’t want to be rude or anything, so he told the guy good luck
however, “thanks, but i think you’re the one that’s gonna’ need it” was not the response he was expecting
besides, he didn’t know that he was racing spot conlon
the guy didn’t race just anybody, he picked his races very carefully
not that anyone knew, he just liked to show off whenever he could race hot guys and girls. this new kid was definitely not an exception
so when the gun went off, the two boys took off
race wasn’t exactly used to driving a car that wasn’t his own, but he was nothing if not an expert at improvising
so he held his own
they stayed pretty much neck and neck the entire time, but right before the end of their last lap, race knew he had a trick spot would never see coming
he sped up right beside spot as he rolled down his window, winking at the boy before shifting gear without stopping for a second as he threw around the wheel and swerved around the back of spot’s car, driving up on his opposite side,,,backwards
spot had no idea what was going on, but before he knew it, race turned again, swerving back to a forward position as he boxed in his opponent and he was a full length ahead as he crossed the line
and he had no idea he was the only person to ever beat spot conlon on his own terms
so he obviously had to have a little chat once all his friends were done losing their minds over the reckless kid they randomly found on the street
that is, until, spot grabbed him by the wrist and took him away from the crowd as they prepped for another race
spot wasn’t mad exactly, but he just didn’t really know what to do with the kid who just shattered the record he’d held for nearly two years
so his first instinct is to basically scare the kid out of his wits
but tbh,,he’s really cute and spot high-key wants to keep him around
so he asks for his name
and suddenly his idea of kicking the kid out and never letting him back seems very tempting again
“race? you’re telling me you came here with a nickname like racetrack and you honestly thought i wouldn’t make fun of it?”
but he moves on from it pretty fast
jk he keeps teasing him about it throughout their entire conversation
it’s just too easy
but he’d be lying if he said he didn’t think he wanted to get to know that kid better
he was different, he wasn’t sure if it was in a good way or not, but he liked it
so spot got the boy’s number at the end of the night, not that he let any of his other friends there see him do it, but he couldn’t help but chuckle a little when he saw the new contact in his phone under the name ‘racetrack’ of all things, but he was definitely glad he did it
