Honestly I can only see chang'e and wukong as a one night stand for her to temporarily forget her dead husband and him to replace his moon ex

see this is perfect because they have sex once, it's really, really sad for both of them, and then they become really close friends! like it is probably thee most heartbreaking sex you've ever heard of because of what it means to both of them (not each other, but what each of them are tryna forget just for one night)

and i think maybe they try again but it just... doesn't work out so instead they really just cuddle a lot and share physical intimacy that isn't sex (which is my favorite kind to be honest!) every once in a while. it's wukong visiting heaven. everyone knows he makes "special visits" to chang'e. everyone has the wrong idea about what exactly happens during these "special visits" but they do know that outside of these "special visits" they really just act like casual acquaintances.

they're both really just touch-starved and there aren't many people who understand their positions—and chang'e is one of the very few people wukong actually and actively trusts. he's been betrayed and let down so much, but chang'e has always been there for him, and he's been there for her immediately whenever she's called. even when he's disappeared from the face of the mortal realm, she knows that he'll come if she calls.
