I've wanted to talk about this show since I watched the first episode, but I couldn't find the time. Now we're at episode 3, and guess what? It's pretty great still. Kaori has been at the helm of the whole series at Studio Gokumi, showcasing the studio's in-house staff in a very strong way. Kaori's approach to adapting this series is fantastic; the show is very colorful, especially in its character designs. There are so many fun reactions and expressions that I just can't help but love. It's been a lot of fun so far, and Kaori's expressive and colorful direction is a great match for the series' character designer, Takahiro Sakai. You might have already seen his designs in Yuki Yuna is a Hero, or perhaps you've watched the recent Reborn as a Vending Machine, I Now Wander the Dungeon (I know I didn't). The designs are very flexible and simple, which works great with the more expressive moments. I mean, it's just so cute, and when combined with the color design, they really stand out to me as a big selling point of this anime.

The story itself is somewhat comparable to the recent Bocchi the Rock, if I had to mention something to compare, if you're a fan of shows dealing with social anxiety and featuring fun visuals, I would definitely recommend giving this a try.

Since the title does say this is a write-up on episode 3, I should probably start talking about episode 3. This is actually the first episode so far that Kaori didn't have a hand in from a boarding perspective, but the expressiveness and reactions were still present in this episode. While the usage of them and the colors weren't as bold as Kaori's usual style, I believe Shinichirou Ueda did a really good job, especially for the more serious or emotional moments of the episode.

Kaori relies on a lot of contrast or bright and simple elements over detailed backgrounds to make things pop. Every time they're a bit quirky or making a funny face, you'll notice it. Ueda's approach is a bit more cohesive, and I couldn't really find a word for it until I talked to my friend this morning, who mentioned that he noticed it, and he's absolutely right. Ueda takes a more environmental approach compared to Kaori, incorporating more variety in distance and layout size. For instance, he uses long empty halls to emphasize the distance Umika must cross to connect with Raimon. When Umika runs during the night, it's subtly matched by the soft stars in the sky. In contrast, Kaori might have been a bit more heavy-handed in how brightly the stars shine or how much they pop out. I think Ueda's approach is different in that he likes to make the entire scene a bit more unified in its look rather than having one element stand out more than the others. I like both Kaori and Ueda's styles very much, and I don't have a strong preference between the two. I just wanted to mention the differences I see in their approaches.

Returning to the production as a whole for a moment, I completely forgot to mention that, aside from the aesthetic direction and character designs, the show animates quite well. It's a very pleasing-looking show, at least to me. The production is very solid, and I think credit should be given to the talented in-house animators at Gokumi and the animation producer, Kenta Washikazi. He has only held this role for two shows prior to this one (Yuki Yuna is a Hero: The Great Mankai Chapter and Seton Academy), both of which also had solid production, so it's clear he knows what he's doing. He has brought on people like Kouta Sera, who appears to be fairly heavily involved in this show as a key animator so far, and he's extremely talented. For instance, he did the cut of Umiko floating up in the opening. It's a perfect mix of in-house staff and the talent Washikazi decided to bring on.

📅 What is your f/o's ideal date? Where do they want to take you? What do they want to do? Is the date planned to the details or is it just a general concept? Is it possible or does one or more factors stop you two from having this date?

Cecil and I go on a lot of dates, usually spontaneous and unstructured, but he definitely has an ideal date that would be Simply Perfect and lives mostly in his mind.

In the fantasy, the two of us go down to the skating rink. He helps me onto the ice, and we both fall down a lot. (In the fantasy, there's no one else on the rink, so there's no danger of getting cut to ribbons by falling into someone's blades.) We laugh and eventually I get the hang of it, and we twirl around under the shifting lights.

We stay late, and our feet are sore when we stumble home, ducking around corners to avoid the curfew police. We kiss at the door, even though we live together, and then he scoops me up and carries me over the threshold (without banging my feet or head against the door).

I think it sounds very nice, if a little unrealistic. For one thing, skating rink dates require a Level 12 dating pass, and Cecil and I are only on Level 5 at the moment. But maybe one day, if we submit the right paperwork!

👥 What does a hug from your f/o feel like? Do they linger? Are their hugs light or do they give strong bear hugs?

Oh!!! Well, I have to be more human sized for a proper hug!! Often times, Cecil just runs a finger over my cheek when he's feeling affectionate, or lets me rub my cheek against his jaw. (It leaves a bit of stardust, and I think he looks good with the sparkle)

But when I'm Cecil-sized, he gives good hugs!!! They're not bear hugs, they're a little more... octopus? He hugs me from behind, twines his arms around my waist, rests his chin on my shoulder, and then talks so that I can feel his voice humming against my spine.

If we've been apart, we run back together, and he holds me very tight on those days. Presses our cheeks together, like I do when I'm my usual size, and just holds me against him <3 <3

📱 What does their phone background look like? Is their phone organized? Is it aesthetically pleasing? How much apps do they have downloaded and do they actually use them? How many contacts do they have?

I've followed Cecil through a lot of phones!! We met before phones existed (mostly), but he had a cute little flip phone with some charms on it for a while.

If we're talking contemporary phones... this would be in the future, but I can check!!

He's got an edited photo of Khoshekh as his lock screen, with lots of cactus and heart stickers all over it. The apps are a bit of a mess: he's always downloading new games because the advertisement was misleadingly interesting. He can rarely find the app he's actually looking for, and he's liable to get distracted on his way. His contact list is full of all the Night Vale citizens, and then some! There are always new contacts appearing on his phone. Awww, the internal background is a photo of Carlos and Esteban.

There you go, that's Cecil's future phone. But shhhh, don't tell him yet.

       this is very much a song that i’ve used to contextualize some of fel’s responses to trauma- especially given that she bottles a lot of things up inside. it’s also pretty fitting to say that at the very beginning of everything, when i first took fel up as a muse, this song was her general being beneath the tired calm- she’d been planning a lot of things that she never got to act on, and thankfully never will now that she’s in a better place. but healing’s not linear and sometimes the panic and anxiety and the need to destroy the things that hurt her come back swinging.

              this could be described as the constant playback in the back of felicity’s mind- she’s learning to take it easy, but she’s always been incredibly driven and craves success and frankly it can be a little self destructive sometimes. she also has her own unhealthy coping mechanisms that she keeps secret because, well, it’s her business not yours. honestly MARINA has a lot of songs that apply to fel scarily well, but this is one of the top ones for her. it applies to both her perfectionist attitude and drive for something more and the excuses she makes to destroy herself to get it, but it’s also reminiscent of her telling herself that it’s not necessary.

              if echo is part of fel’s trauma, hymn is part of her healing. this is very much a celebration of the imperfect, of living life and loving it and accepting the good and bad- and growing from it. this is fel finding love and acceptance in her friends and in herself, her traveling and learning and loving. this song is both fel at her friends, and her acceptance of herself as everything that she is, in it’s gentlest form (which is what she needs, really- she’s always been too hard on herself).

              honestly this song as a whole is very much fel’s aesthetic on multiple levels. it feels incredibly cynical, a mockery of fairy tales, but a few lines hint at hope- and a few hint at lost hope on the other side of things. and i’ll be honest, that suits her a lot- she’s in a better place but she’s still a mentally ill, jaded, depressed trauma victim after all. the song also itself is about being disillusioned with life the singer’s own choices- but where the singer keeps going with it because she feels she has no other choice in life, fel broke out and is making things better.

              i feel like this song is a combination of fel’s drive to succeed, her need for movement or action or just doing something somehow, her inability to really care for herself, her coping mechanisms, her slight paranoia and her zest for really living life now that she’s free and healing. it’s a bit messy, honestly, but its born out of both good and bad- her desire to live, and her unhealthy mentality alike. she wants to get out there and do things, wants to see what she’s missed and make sure she doesn’t lose out on anything else because of cruel adults!! she wants to be a better, different person! but also she feels a little bit like others judge her for what she’s lost out on, and it makes her uncomfortable and she hates it. (and this is not without basis, many people respond poorly when she mentions not having seen or done something before.) but there’s also a lot of uncertainty in the lyrics because while the singer is trying to keep up with a normal life, there’s always questions about everything- their future, their life, everything- and it makes them uncomfortable. this song really is about a lot of things- and almost all of them do apply here to felicity.
