Okay, I'm thinking about "Promise?" "...promise." again (the lil Alex pov sequel I wrote to chapter 2 of Sorry it's locked), and just, writing from Alex's pov was so cool because I got to show the difference in how he and Jay think about things, even down to what they call the Operator.

Jay calls it a "thing" or "the faceless thing" whereas Alex calls it "the man in the black suit", because to Jay it's nothing but a monster that's been essentially hunting him down for the last however many years, whereas Alex is more familiar with it, in a way. Obviously, Alex isn't, like, friends with it, but he knows more about it than probably anyone except maybe Tim. It's been a constant in his life for years, so he's grown familiar with it and given it more of a name than Jay has.

Which, in my mind, also points to Alex having more of an acceptance of the Operator as part of his life, whereas Jay still refuses to just lie down and accept that maybe the Operator is here to stay. So Jay refuses to give it a name, and Alex doesn't.
