🥀 what keeps you motivated/helps boost your mood when you’re feeling off?

motivation is a huge weakness for me! if i knew how to boost it i wouldnt be on this app but i have a laundry list miles long about mood boosting and emotional maintenance! ive been in and out of care for bpd and autism for the better part of 8 years now and while i can't rate the professional help (nhs mh 😬) i CAN say that i am currently doing super well in terms of stability. i think for me it's less about Feeling Better and more about breaking the bad you know? temperature shocks are a big thing for me, especially with my heavy emotional weights for temp, so it's a lot of uncomfortable showers, cooling towels on neck, cool water on feet and face, cat baths, hot water bottles, ice creams, going outside. just anything with that like Temperature Shock is going to help. for overwhelming most often going sudden cold (safely) is what works best for me!! resets!

🌿 do you like having plants in your home/yard? do you have any currently?

LOVE THEM!!! when i was living at uni i had 7-9 various houseplants in my room and others scattered in the kitchen halls and bathroom but these days most of them have been claimed by my mom! i have three in my room now! a large succulent a sort of grass and something tall with dark greens and waxy leaves... by those descriptions you can tell im terrible at remembering plant types but im surprisingly not terrible at keeping them alive. idk it mostly just works out

✨ what scents do you have strong memories/associations with?

the nice ones are like orange blossom (aunts perfume who passed, grandmother figure to me, scent never lasted bc of her work so you could only ever smell it if you hugged real tight, calloused hands, bristly hair, miss her ), ocean spray (lived by a beach, leaving the commune for outings, big bright blue, one day we'll get out of here, people on the outside are kind - the systemite kids are kind - i will be able to have friends on the outside, calm, loneliness, laughter), honeysuckle (represents childhood hunger and gentleness and peace and danger, the importance of ritual), lemon blossom (tree by the pool in one of the worst communes we lived in, best lemons ive ever tasted, my aunt maria taught me how to make soap), apple cider vinegar (self sufficiency - making meals for myself too young, fresh vegetables from the local farms, abuelas tomato salads, full stomachs)

but there's also more unpleasant ones just in terms of the scent itself: septic tank in the height of summer (danger, childhood recklessness, the feeling of being trapped, the buzz of the wasps,) the thing that died in the pool over winter (we didn't find it until we cleaned the pool in summer, it smelt mostly of chlorine, we don't know what animal it had been, it's bones were greyer than id expected, my mom cried for a week) and it's dry and the car is leaking (it's the middle of a drought and the old car is leaking, thick black oil onto the drive. there have been three bush fires this week and every time you haul your childhood possessions onto the year and watch the smoke. the smoke clings and clutches and you think about the oil. no one else can smell it but you. it's worse when the fires start when you're already out and you think about all the things that you left inside the home.) the smell of the old car in summer (and then you're inside the car, waiting at the gas station and all around you is the smell of smoke and gasoline and seaweed and leaking. the seat is somehow sticky and sandy all at once. your uncle is talking about leaving forever again.)

I dumped my brackish jar despite it having possibly reached a more stable condition, mainly because I only have one large, sealable jar atm and really wanted it for a saltwater ecosphere. The place I sourced from is right at the mouth of a huge bay, so that there’s very gentle currents and tide. It doesn’t have actual tide pools, but it’s one of the closest things this area would have to them! So I figured it would be ideal as there’s a lot of free floating SAV, string algae and seaweeds etc. there’s even some rooted planted I dug up. I made sure to add some AC to the gravel layer below the bio active sediment, and included many oyster shells for calcium just in case I picked up any snails (which I did!). In my last attempt I mixed a small amount of crushed egg shells and coffee to combat some equilibrium problems but it backfired big time, so I decided to forgo that route considering it’s a water jar and maybe there was too much leaching going on? Well. When I dumped the last one there was still a periwinkle snail going strong, and some unidentified red worms burrowing throughout the sand. The marsh grass seemed to be dying but the fire moss was ok! I sorta regret dumping it— even tho I’m sure everything I tossed was fine because I returned it to the source, it was a much less volatile jar than this current one.

The first day there was SO much life. Another snail, which looked like a mud snail but I doubt it was. Regardless they’re invasive but hardy so I didn’t feel bad about picking it up, as snails are great at cleaning up excess algae and bioscum. I got some sea lettuce and red macroalgea (some kinda Rhodophyta), and probably 4-5 other species of rooted and free floating SAV. Some recently devoured mussels with empty barnacles growing on them. Accidentally got a baby hermit crab which I put back. Tried to avoid dead plant matter so I wouldn’t kick start the anaerobic shit. There were segmented and smooth little worms all through the sand, SO many copepods and ostracods, none of which I’d ever be equipped to identify with the naked eye, and even a sea slater (I wanted to fish it out since they’re not actually hard aquatic but it kept burrowing in the sand, which even fresh, does not smell good lol.) but naturally, without the even a gentle current, the biofilm and scum started to build. The sea grass and macroalgea seem to be doing ok but there’s sooo many little macrofauna and work corpses. Feel pretty bad about that but it’s bound to happen anytime you trap them in a jar. Just wasn’t expecting it to happen so quickly! So I think my main issue is I overloaded the jar with SAV, and dug too deep into the sand and got a lot of anerobic bacteria (hence the natural sulfuric smell of even ‘fresh’ sediment (another side note that this particular area of the bay is 100% saltwater but still very protected from the actual open ocean, and so the sand is much finer and almost muddier)) and then I may have over filled with water a bit too much! Not removing the sea slater or snail might’ve been a bad move too; if they died right off that would overload such a tiny ecosystem with H2S when the bacteria immediately starts to break it down.

The brackish ecosphere didn’t smell AT ALL, even when you opened the jar. It has a good seal with a gasket that I modified to make sure it was as airtight as possible. And yet! The fucking straight up. Methane smell coming from this supposedly sealed jar. I have a glass of bleach next to it, some baking soda in a jar lid on top of it, a candle lit, and potpourri out. And I keep. Every now and again I sniff and frown so hard bc I couldn’t dump this thing if I wanted to. I wanna see what happens, I wanna stick it out even tho I don’t own a microscope rn that could show me all the nasty little thotties hanging out. But good fucking Lloyd. I had it sitting out in my main room but I had to move it to the steps on my loft to make sure it remains hidden. I might like. Fucking take it to the shed idk. I assumed the brackish would be so much worse but I was SO wrong.

On the bright side my forest floor one is doing well. I have a feeling the fresher and stiller the water I try next time, the better the results. It’s more ‘alive’ than brackish with a current, and less ‘delicate’ than sea water thanks to duckweed and such. It’ll be hard to find good plants for it since most of the areas I’m thinking of trying are deep, nasty rivers that aren’t easy to wade through, but I think I’ll wait till fall or at least till I get another big ass jar. I also wanna try a beach sand/shrub one but I doubt it’ll be very exciting. Despite the rain and humidity, the beach brush forests here are so like. Dry. And barren looking, in terms of the floor. I’m sure it’s better left alone but my curiosity will probably get the best of me if I acquire more jars. Good ones not little shitty Mason jars
