Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, how the growth of ID contributes to the physical transformation book vs movies.
This post is being written to express my theories on the ID's physical depiction in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde from novel to the screen. In the book Mr. Hyde was smaller in stature as well as younger than the more developed Dr. Jekyll. This is psychologically logical as Dr. Jekyll was all ego and super ego, suppressing and wishing to ignore and even kill his ID and its urges. As Mr. Hyde is the ID, it is reasonable and even logical for him to appear stunted. He is also noted in the novel to have had some unnamed and undiscribed physical deformity that was seen to be evil. Another physical expression of the ID is quite obvious here. None of that is particularly new.  My theory continues to build on that logic, however, and it involves the fact that Mr. Hyde eventually becomes a larger character than Dr. Jekyll in many of the movies and screen depiction's in general in which he is shown. This is also the case in my favorite Mr. Hyde action figure. It was put out based on the Silent screamer movies. While it looks wonderfully true to the movie the figure is larger than he was depicted in that silent film and far larger than Dr. Jekyll. This to me is actually a correct interpretation as was also done later on screen. This is simply because the ID is being allowed to grow as Mr. Hyde gains strength. Eventually he no longer requires the potion to change from Dr. Jekyll to Mr. Hyde, instead being able to achieve this goal on his own steam as it were. That sounds like he's getting bigger to me. So if he grows in mental strength, whu not then in size with the physical transformation. Both symbolize the ID going out of control and thus growing larger than the ego or super ego who both pinned him down for so long, instead imposing their own larger will. When the tables so obviously turn, so should then the size. Nynaeve If you enjoyed this, check out our youtube channel, batwebgothicreviews, where all your screams come true.
