This is a translation of Louie Zong's Signal/Noise to toki pona, called toki/kalama

I made this while I was listening to it, because it seemed like it would be fun to do. I'd make a cover, but I couldn't seem to find an instrumental of the song.

Lyrics:

pilin ike tenpo - terminally ill (feeling bad time)

wawa, lon linja - powerful, on line

sona e sona ale - know all knowledge

taso e lawa mi - (except) my mind

pana e jan tawa jan - sharing to person from person

jo ala e ijo pana - have no object to give

mi pana e pilin - I'm giving out my heart

mi moli e lawa - I'm killing my brain

lape - sleep

pini - wake (finish sleep)

mi lon - I'm real

powe - fake

mi alasa e toki - I'm looking for the signal

lon kalama - in the noise

kalama lon toki - sing with the signal

kepeken kalama - using (my) voice

Translation notes under cut:

I think I did a pretty good job translating the basics of the basic meaning of the song. I wish that it was possible to keep some of the computer/electronic jokes, but that's obviously not possible with the restrictions of toki pona.

The line "taso e lawa mi" in the first verse is a little strange, but I think it's mostly understandable. Originally, the line is "Know all there is to know / except for my own mind"

This can pretty easily be translated as "sona e sona ale / sona ala e lawa mi" ("know all knowledge / don't know my mind")

But, this is too many syllables! So, instead I used "taso" (but) as a verb to act as the inverse of the previous verb ("sona"). I don't think this is standard, but I do think it's a pretty clever solution.

For the third verse, this was more or less a direct translation. There's no word for "wake", so I used "pini" (finish) to imply stop sleep from the previous line. "powe" is non-pu, but it sounds better than "lon ala" here.

The fourth verse was the first I wrote. I wanted to do this song because I figured that you could use "toki/kalama" to mean "signal/noise". "kalama" is of course sound, noise; And "toki" is speech, which could be interpreted as noise with meaning (or a signal).

"toki lon kalama" is used to mean "signal in the noise". But then in the next line, the same line is reversed with "kalama lon toki", this time meaning "sing along with the signal".

sina o musi e kalama musi mi! tawa pona!
