Linktober 2023 – Day 11. Monsters
This one is a bit special I guess! I’m still not over the damn Redeads throwing a party in Ikana Castle, they were both horrifying and absolutely hilarious to me. I love it!
This part of the game was incredible and Stone Tower Temple might be my favorite dungeon ever.
(Fun fact: in French we call Redeads 'Effrois', which is French for terror or dread 🧐)
Previous (Day 10. Zelda) | Next (Day 12. Princess)

Continued use of these apps may cause your IP to be blocked indefinitely. This triggers our anti-spambot measures, which are designed to stop automated systems from flooding the site with traffic. Some unofficial phone apps appear to be using GameFAQs as a back-end, but they do not behave like a real web browser does.Using GameFAQs regularly with these browsers can cause temporary and even permanent IP blocks due to these additional requests. If you are using Maxthon or Brave as a browser, or have installed the Ghostery add-on, you should know that these programs send extra traffic to our servers for every page on the site that you browse. The most common causes of this issue are: Talk to Kotake for red potion (In woods) 3.Your IP address has been temporarily blocked due to a large number of HTTP requests. Sentient Monsters/Enemies in Zelda
People seemed to enjoy my last list so I'm going to touch on probably one of my favorite topics in LOZ! I'm mostly focusing on monsters and enemies that are shown to be not completely affiliated with any sort of Big Bad or are demonstrably capable of speech or independent thought but I'll also be including other enemies and monsters. I'm not going to really include bosses unless I find it necessary (hence the lack of Maz Koshia, Gohdan, Byrne, Bellumbeck, etc) As usual, I may touch headcanon territory a little, and I'll happily take any corrections/suggestions and reblog them!
...Actually I might just edit the post, not sure.
This contains gameplay spoilers for...a lot of Zelda games, so please proceed with caution!
Ache
Batlike enemies from The Adventure of Link. They are usually hostile, and will disguise themselves as villagers, revealing their disguise if spoken to. There is a friendly Ache that can be found in the Town of Nabooru that Link can speak to.
Batreaux
A reformed demon from Skyward Sword who has a secret house on Skyloft. He expresses a desire to become human, and requests that Link bring Gratitude Crystals to him so he can become one.
Bulblin
Namely King Bulblin, but I personally think this applies to regular Bublins as well. Throughout Twilight Princess you fight King Bulblin in various boss fights, but he always retreats before Link can kill him. In your final battle with him, he finally speaks, claiming that he "always follows the strongest side," before leaving and dropping a key to the inside of Hyrule Castle. Bulblins in general are shown to be fairly intelligent, riding on large boars called Bulbos and Twilit Kargaroks, creating structures, and cooking food.
Dark World Creatures
Many of inhabitants of the Dark World in A Link to the Past are heavily implied to be people who sought after the Triforce but were trapped upon entering the Dark World and transformed into monsters according to their true nature. These creatures can be aggressive at the start, seem initially friendly and attack you later, like Blind the thief, or can be completely passive.
Deku Scrub
These are plantlike creatures that spit out seeds to attack. In Ocarina of Time, Deku Scrubs seem to have made an allegiance with the first boss, Gohma. When attacked, they will surrender and either give you information or sell you items. In Majora's Mask, not only can Link transform into a Deku Scrub, but there is a Deku Scrub palace to be explored. Like in Ocarina of Time, Deku Scrubs are hostile to outsiders, and will refuse to let Link into the palace if he is not in Deku Scrub form. In Minish Cap, a sick Deku Scrub blocks the way by sneezing out seeds at Link and Zelda.
Garo
The Garo from Majora's Mask are a tribe of undead, ninja-like hooded creatures. They reside in the Kingdom of Ikana, though they're not originally from there, and will only appear to Link if he is wearing the Garo Mask. At some time in the past, the Garo came to Ikana Valley as assassins, but like most Ikana residents they were killed and their ghosts linger around the area.
Goriya
A slightly more obscure enemy from the original Legend of Zelda, Zelda II, Link's Awakening, and the Oracle Games. Goriya are moblin-like creatures that attack with a boomerang. In the original Legend of Zelda, a hungry Goriya blocks a door in a dungeon. In Link's Awakening, there is a hidden friendly Goriya that can only be seen using the Magnifying Glass, similar to the friendly River Zora.
Iron Knuckle
Armored enemies in Zelda II and Ocarina of Time, serving as minibosses of the Spirit Temple in the latter. In the last room of the Spirit Temple, the Twinrova control Nabooru, the Sage of Spirit, and force her to fight Link as an Iron Knuckle. Looking closely at the ordinary Iron Knuckle model reveals a Gerudo face inside, so many people believe that the other Iron Knuckles Link fights are also possessed or evil Gerudo.
Mad Batter/Li'l Devil
A batlike creature from A Link to the Past and Link's Awakening that lives in an underground cavern. Link can disturb him by tossing Magic Powder at a statue, where he will become angry and "curse" Link by giving him a magic upgrade.
Moblin
Featured in the original Legend of Zelda, Moblins are one of the quintessential enemies in the Zelda series. They have been shown multiple times to be capable of speech and seem to be able to defect from Ganon's horde in some instances. The original game also contains the first instance of a friendly monster in Zelda, the famous "it's a secret to everyone" Moblin. In the Wind Waker, a girl named Maggie has fallen in love with one of the Moblins in Forsaken Fortress, and sends a letter to him. Moe the Moblin sends a letter back, proving that Moblins are not only capable of speech, but probably writing.
Phantom
Guardians of the Tower of Spirits in Spirit Tracks and invaders of the Temple of the Ocean King in Phantom Hourglass. Phantoms are highly intelligent enemies that will chase Link down, and are capable of speech. In Spirit Tracks, Phantom Zelda can converse with them to distract them while Link makes his way through the Tower of Spirits.
River Zora
River Zora are featured in the original Legend of Zelda, a Link to the Past, Link's Awakening, A Link Between Worlds, Oracle of Ages, and Phantom Hourglass. River Zora are highly territorial creatures that inhabit bodies of water in most of the games they are featured in. They will usually shoot fireballs at Link and dive under the water if confronted. However, in many games, there are several Zora who will not attack you and may give you helpful items. In A Link to the Past, Link can speak to King Zora to get the Zora Flippers. In Link's Awakening, there is a secret friendly Zora that can be seen after Link has obtained the Magnifying Glass. In A Link Between Worlds, the Zora Queen Oren will give you the Zora Flippers.
Soldier
Hylian Soldiers have a long history of either getting possessed, turning evil, or being extremely incompetent in the Zelda series, and A Link to the Past is probably what started it. Soldiers are the primary enemy fought in the Light World, and are friendly to Link at the beginning of the game, telling Link to go home to bed on such a rainy night. One soldier mentions that they have noticed something strange about the other soldiers, and expects that they will soon succumb to whatever is possessing them. This is of course Agahnim, an evil magician and Ganon in disguise.
Stalchildren/Stalfos
Featured in almost every game in the series, Stalfos are undead skeleton-like enemies. Stalchildren are weaker, more common enemies that are featured in Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask. Ordinarily Stalchildren will attack you in Majora's Mask, however if you wear the Captain's Hat—the hat of their leader, Skull Keeta—they will talk to you, and give you access to secret underground areas each night. Stalchildren, like the Garo, are also one of the undead races from Ikana Valley, and their king can be fought there.
Yiga
(they get a shoutout cause I love them. mwah)
Featured in Breath of the Wild, the Yiga Clan are an offshoot of the Sheikah Tribe that separated ten thousand years before the events of Breath of the Wild. After Calamity Ganon emerged for the first time and was destroyed with the help of Ancient Sheikah technology, the Royal Family turned their backs on the people who helped them, forcing them to abandon their work. The Sheikah went into hiding, but some of them fought back. This group became known as the Yiga Clan, and they are well known for their affinity to Calamity Ganon and their murderous tendencies. Dorian was originally a member of the Yiga Clan, and served as an informant to them for some time.

Link is Link (Tying Ikana to Hyrule)
[Game theory posted this video]
Which honestly sounds a little bit rushed, like they needed to come up with a theory to get on the Zelda Movie Hype train currently running. (I just like the game)
This particular theory started with the common point that "Link's hair in the WindWaker-Series is blonde, which is a stark contrast to nearly every other counterpart Link."
But exposure to sunlight and saltwater can have hair bleaching effects, especially if you lived in a tropical area your entire life. (I don't know how the Irish do it. No)
The video however, raised a couple interesting points--In particular, the upside down Triforce symbology on the doors shared by everybody in Outset Isle. Which is very similar to the upside down Triforce symbol in Ikana Castle (and other locations) in Majora's Mask.
The story behind Zelda64 is Link's mother escaping war with her son: Link. And in Majora's Mask, there are the constant ruins of war *everywhere*. In the Lore behind Majora's Mask, the Ikana and the Garo were at war with each other. The Ikana were a royal family, whose ghosts are restless, and wander the area (and may even be related to the Stalfos and Poe's). The Kingdom of Ikana was at war with the Garo Tribe. (The tribe the Gorman Bros impersonates while Raiding Romani Ranch)
The Garo are a tribe of Ninja and could potentially be related to the Shieka, but there is no given Link so far. (Unless Impa *is* that Link, having escaped the bloodshed as well, since Future Zelda calls herself the "last Shieka")
What this means is that Outset Island is located near Ikana Kingdom AND shares their symbology. (upside down Triforce) MattPatt may have gotten one thing right; That symbol on *that* shield *probably* doesn't belong to his family, since he hails from Ikana.
What he gets wrong is that, if this is the *future/adult timeline* then "The Legendary Hero of Time" was sent back through time. And that's why the King of Red Lions says so. He's not related to *that* Link, but that doesn't mean they're *not* related at all.
And divine providence probably means blood relation doesn't even matter anyway, it just so happens that they're Hylian descendents in general. Why do I say that? Well, Link's sister Aryll was kidnapped for looking like Zelda (who was tetra at the time). And who knows, maybe without Tetra, Aryll would've been chosen as Zelda.
What this also means is that Link, after losing his connection with literally everybody he's ever known (Except Skull Kid), traveled far enough south to rediscover his roots. The war that nearly consumed the world.

Question for anyone else who completed TotK because I can't remember 🙂
(So spoilers again)
When Riju talks with her ancestor (who I believe to be Nabooru) she is called "Daughter of the Gerudo"
Does anyone know/remember what the others were referred to as? Was pride one maybe?
I'm curious because I'm trying to determine how tied to ancient Egypt the Gerudo are, or just strongly influenced by, as it could help with symbolism. It's to my understanding the first oroboros symbol was discovered in Egypt, and represented as both the beginning and end of time. There have been other niche things in the series that my kemetic ADHD ass zones in on but I don't know how much it really matters, nor can I remember specifics at this time besides building design. (IKANA CASTLE)
Unsure if this is related, but again-symbolism- serpents guard gates in the Egyptian underworld (called the Duat)
But still in TotK like are they SERPENTS or DRAGONS cause the dragons KIIIINDA RESEMBLE VOLVAGIA or is nintendo just blending Reptile creatures and calling it a day?????

Lorepost: Chapter Eleven, “Audentia”
By popular reader request, TTYE lore posts are companion pieces for each chapter of the story breaking down all of the Legend of Zelda lore and references made in each chapter, for readers looking to learn more about LoZ or just refresh their knowledge. This chapter contains explanations for: SPOILERS...
This one is also very spoilery. I’m going in-depth on the Yuugi-tachi’s hallucinations in the jungle, and often these will be things that the gang themselves don’t manage to figure out - tons of foreshadowing, references to other timelines, etc. etc. No direct spoilers for future TTYE chapters, just hints.
Part One: Yuugi’s Hallucinations
Tumblr media
The Story of the Dark Interlopers
Suddenly Yuugi found himself standing on a ledge, high above a pool of crystalline water, cave walls closing him in on every side. A voice, as ancient as Hylia’s, but of a different timbre.
Those who do not know the danger of wielding power will, before long, be ruled by it.
A girl, suspended in the air above him, upside down. Her eyes were white. She laughed, once.
Here, Yuugi is reliving the scene in The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess where Link learns about the Dark Interlopers: a tribe of sorcerers who tried to corrupt the Sacred Realm and were thus banished to the Twilight Realm.
I highly recommend watching the cutscene - not only is it informative, it’s also just hella creepy and extremely well done. (The girl in the cutscene is Ilia, Link’s childhood friend. Adds an extra layer of horror.)
Tumblr media
Link is Cursed to Wolf Form
He was in a room at the top of a castle. Dusky light filtered in through the windows. A cloaked woman knelt in front of a wolf.
You were imprisoned? …I’m sorry. I’m sorry.
This scene is also from Twilight Princess, when Link meets Princess Zelda in wolf form. She takes a lot of responsibility for what happened, both to Hyrule and to Link himself. This is another cutscene I really recommend watching!
Tumblr media
Igos du Ikana and Sharp
The castle walls became a stone fortress, high and foreboding against a red sky.
My servants have fallen namelessly before the light that guides you…
A spectre dressed in courtly finery, clutching a conductor’s baton -
We dead should not be lingering here in this land.
These scenes are from Majora’s Mask. Link is in the haunted kingdom of Ikana, whose inhabitants mysteriously disappeared centuries ago, leaving only ghosts and the undead in their wake. Link battles the undead king Igos du Ikana and lifts the curse on the ghostly composer Sharp, in the process putting many undead creatures to rest.
Tumblr media
The Royal Family’s Tomb
And finally he stood in long-forgotten crypt bearing a single stone mural.
The rising sun will eventually set, A newborn’s life will fade.
From sun to moon, moon to sun…
Give peaceful rest to the living dead.
This inscription is found in the Royal Family’s Tomb in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Reading the poem and the song etched into the tombstone allows Link to learn The Sun’s Song, which turns day into night and also can be used to battle the undead.
I’m going to save Part Two of this post to tie into the next chapter, because the group actually has a chance to talk about their hallucinations and their items. Stay tuned!

Okay I'm gonna explain a bit how Termina is in my hyrules curse au! Every reblog with explain each "kingdom" but it's basically all these guys: gerudo, goron, zora, deku, rito, and terminans :]
But first, some geography of Termina! Just to make a sort of visual of how the world looks and all that. First, there's two main arid regions in Termina, but the Ikana region is more of a mesa, mountainous region rather than a traditional desert, but it does have a very arid climate. The second being the actual gerudo desert that lies to the south of the Ikana region with a large mountain range sepreating it from the deku's swamp region.
Farther to the north lies the snowy, dry regions of Termina where the gorons and rito largely share. Death mountain has been dormant for hundreds of years and as such the region has became closer to a tundra, with hot springs residing underground closer to the volcanic activity. More northeast to the goron city is where the rito live, high within Termina's tundras where they reside with a close alliance to the gorons.
Most terminans reside closer to the central continent, most either within clock town, around the border of clock town, along the rural area where romani ranch lies, or within the immediate area of Termina Castle. Small clusters of terminans do live closer to each of the surrounding regions but most prefer the temperate, mild climate of central Termina with the great bay being the one with the second largest population.
Ikana is a nearly barren part of Termina, none but the most solitary choose to live there as it's largely seen as a graveyard to a fallen kingdom. Several ruins can be found within Ikana, even the half-destroyed remains of a fortress, as well as the scars of the war between the Guro and Ikana kingdoms. The war was an ancient one and most records have been lost to time, but most still avoid the region as its strongly believed to still be haunted by both sides of the opposing war. Others simply avoid the region to let the spirits come to rest as they should've done in death.
Central Termina is where clock town resides and the main castle with both acting as a meeting point for all of Termina's regions and cultures. One big difference from hyrule is that Termina does not have any sort of authority over any of the other kingdoms as unlike Hyrule, it did not force a unification between all kingdoms. Instead it's moreso a single country with several allied kingdoms within it and clock town and the castle act as one of the easiest spaces for all to interact with each other. Another big difference is that there's no royal family! As with a lack of societal and financial influence over all the kingdoms, a prestigious royal family just doesn't make much sense.
Instead, clock town and it's central castle follow a more democratic approach with a hard emphasis on diplomacy as it's very often welcoming all of Termina's people within its borders. A royal family just wouldn't fly here as clock town is more of a mixing pot of cultures with Terminans own mixed in as well. The other kingdoms do not fall under this same order of business though, as the other kingdoms have more traditional branches of power to royalty.
Gorons and Gerudo have chiefs acting as figureheads while the Rito, Zora, and Deku have something closer to a monarchy; kings, queen, princesses, princes, etc.
Central Termina does not have an overarching royalty, with one exception.
The Moon Children.

Some times it still struck me, how so many of the Zelda worlds are post apocalyptic settings.
Like you have the calamity in botw and the great flood in ww. But also the wiped out surface world of sksw, and the wasteland of Zelda 1&2. In Oot after Link woke up there's literally zombies redeads roaming the streets of castle town, and in Twilight Princess there's the eternal twilight looming over the land. Majora's mask doesn't count as post apocalyptic because it's more like a ongoing apocalypse, but you get to Ikana and yeah that's another wasteland alright.
Just, I don't know. When people talk about post apocalyptic settings they always kinda think about the grim dark survival of the fittest situation. But I really like how it's done in the Zelda worlds. Post apocalyptic worlds that have so much hope in them.
