Merrigong Environmental Sculpture - The Six Daughters of the West Wind

"The west wind, Oolaboolawoo lived on top of Merrigong (Illawarra Range) and had six daughters, Mimosa, Wilga, Lilli Pilli, Wattle, Clemantis and Geera. Mimosa would scratch and fight when the girls were playing and to punish her, the west wind blew her and the rock she sat on out so sea. She landed away from the land and became an island, which none of her sisters could swim to. Mimosa's fate should have been a lesson to her sisters, who were also cast out to sea by their father.

Because Oolaboolawoo way always bust out west, the last sister Gerra sat lonely on the escarpment looking out at her sisters, the Five Islands, eventually allowing the animals and trees to grow on her.

She turned to stone and became the mountain known as Mt Keira (Geera)."

It landed on the green, about 40 centimetres from the hole (I saw the pitch mark where it had bounced), and rolled a couple of metres further behind. This photo actually shows my ball after I hit my tee shot. Hole 7 is a short par 3 across this small pond. Fortunately I managed to connect cleanly and made it over easily with a nice drive.Ī couple of holes later is another water hazard, this course’s signature hole: So I really needed to hit this one well to clear that water. On the first four holes I’d hit poorly with the driver, sending the ball skimming low across the grass.

Boomerang golf course driver#

This was scary, because I’m still getting the hang of hitting my driver with the new techniques I picked up during the lesson I had a couple of weeks ago. You have to hit over the water and towards the yellow flag in the distance (between the two golfers). It has three holes where you have to hit over water hazards. It’s not a particularly fancy course, but was nice enough. So in some places on the course we had views of the ocean, and also back north along the coast to the city. It’s situated on top of the Illawarra Escarpment, a plateau that drops off in a cliff to a narrow strip of land along the coast. This a shortish 18-hole course about 60 km south of the city centre. My golfing friend invited me today to join him for a round at Boomerang Golf Course.

MM House developed from the desire to make specific connections with Sydney Harbour’s iconic landscape. A heightened sense of transparency articulates a thick plan – situating domestic life against the sublime natural and urban backdrop of the harbour and city skyline.

The orientation and configuration of the house curate a series of view points that link the domestic realm to the landscape beyond. The subtle level changes uncover new aspects of the harbour landscape and provide delineation of space within the plan.

The house is formally geometric – but is punctured by courtyards and breaks that offer unexpected vistas, and lend complexity to the section. Stripped of enclosing walls living spaces orientate outward, diffusing thresholds through a series of operable glazed doors. Double height voids in the living and courtyard spaces extend this connection, with the view presented as a ‘series of moments’ when making one’s way through the home.

The project has been designed to be robust and endure the setting of a coastal environment. With the advancements in material technologies realised in bionics, the external facade is enveloped in a self cleaning render. Allowing nature to clean and revitalise the facade whilst repelling harsh abrasive salts from the harbour.

In order to move away from a predominately flat surface resolution, characterised by contemporary applications of render, we adopted a hand crafted technique. The render is applied by spraying the substructure then hand pressing with a trowel, giving depth and irregularity to the strong geometric form.

Internally the house materialises as an arrangement of refined surfaces and details, layered against the raw and elemental nature of concrete, marble and timber. This play, balances the homes reduced external palette and invites warmth and tactility to the project.
