I wish you would write a fic where there’s discourse over how in ‘Golden World’, for a while, Mary becomes somewhat cold towards Cromwell once she learns about the OT3, and people are bashing her for her natural reaction. (She doesn’t taunt Cromwell that he’s disposable the way she did in one of my fics — I don’t think in actuality she’d be so verbal about it — but their relationship is strained until the Thomas Seymour attack.) Basically people calling her homophobic and irredeemable, ignoring nuance and Mary’s upbringing/trauma. Bonus points for someone Shutting the Nonsense Down.

Okay. So I think we all know that I am not Mary Tudors biggest fan but this above? This is profoundly and deeply unfair and honestly gross for a group of people who say they are about defending abuse survivors. So I want to talk about Mary Tudor. 

Was her parents only living child - which yes, meant she was very much doted on and loved but I think everyone would agree that a child should be loved yes. 

When she is still (and let me emphasise this) AN ACTUAL CHILD her dad is like I am going to get a divorce and marry my mistress and Mary, as again AN ACTUAL CHILD does not want to blame her dad and also sides with her mother 

There’s an annulment but as it turns out her father still wants to fight to legitimise her half sibling over her. Of course Mary is hurt. OF COURSE. Of course when Henry brings Bessie Blount to meet Mary, Mary lashes out at Bessie because again she’s a CHILD who is HURTING who has had her world upended without any real warning - as far as Mary had known her parents loved each other, they adored her and were proud of her. 

Now yes, Mary did say some not nice things to Bessie but again SHE WAS A SMALL CHILD. I’m sure all of us were clearly perfectly rational clear eyed adults at that age and also have never said things out of anger and hurt EVER. 

(Also what she actually said was that Bessie “would only ever be my fathers mistress to me” but that she was sure that “he would tire of you and that I will be restored to my place and my bastard brother to his”) 

And then Henry, who was not in his good parenting decisions place decided that Katherine had been poisoning their daughter against him and said that they would not be in contact. And yes, Mary did remain a Princess. Yes, she was lodged in luxury and comfort with people who loved her. Yes even the Emperor thought she was very well treated etc but okay, imagine being Mary’s age and not being able to see or hear from your mother who loved you. Imagine that your father, who had never been remotely angry at you before, was. That is not a small thing. 

Neither is ATTEMPTED RAPE. Attempted rape and kidnapping. It was a sexual assault and to diminish the horror of that is to play some kind of bullshit trauma olympics and I refuse to do so. 

Now I have written a lot of meta critical of Mary about the homophobia and I stand by it but I also want to say this - She Evolved. She absolutely evolved and more than that she embraced her queer family deeply. This is not a ‘you have to forgive people who have hurt you because they changed’ thing because no you don’t but as far as we know - the most Mary was was just colder to Thomas Cromwell for time. None of her siblings ever talk about Mary being anything other than supportive - yes her diary has some Feelings but again that was her diary that she did not intend for other people to see. She worked through it and I do think that crediting progress matters.

Finally. Okay, look no one knows what was actually said between Thomas Cromwell and Mary Tudor that night after Thomas ‘DIAF’ Seymour happened though I think The Tudors depicted it beautifully (James and Sarah were just incredible) but what little we do know (Mary’s diaries, Pippa’s letters to her spouses and Mihrimah’s writings) says that Thomas Cromwell did in fact volunteer. In The Tudors when Mary asks it’s clear that it’s an ask, not an order - in fact they are very much beyond the stage where Mary could just order him and they both know it. 

What happened, in all probability is what happened on screen. That a good and kind person offered solace to a young woman in pain.  

#I wrote a tag novel again didn’t I #I feel very strongly about this #if anything Mary might be a former restorationist who grew up knowing nothing else and got out once she did #she changed and I think that’s EXTREMELY IMPORTANT TO NOTE #like i am not actually a Mary fan particularly #but we needed to see her as an actual person you know
