pinch, v.
First attested in the early 13th century from pinchier, the Old North French dialect form of Old French pincier, "to nip, squeeze, or pinch; to steal". The French is of uncertain origin, but is most likely from Latin punctiare, "to pierce". Another possibility is that the word is in some way imitative.
The noun form of this word is first attested with the figurative sense of "a difficult or critical moment or situation" in the late 15th century. The literal sense of "an amount which can be held between the thumb and forefinger" is not attested until the 1580s, followed shortly by "an instance of pinching; the act of pinching" in the 1590s.
The Modern English word pincer is a doublet with pinch from Old French pincier.
