AND YET....his possible first kill was Sam. Yes Sam was infected but to Henry it's still Sam, still his little brother and he hesitated for a second and then turned the gun to himself and DID not hesitate. I will never recover from this

she sits at the corner of his desk, waiting for him back in his designated lab for his return from what maria hill likes to call a ‘chat to catch up’ ------------- she’s had a fair few herself over the commander’s tenure; the memory of any of them being something pleasant failing her as she picks idly at the hem of her sleeve.  there’s anticipation that she’ll be the next one asked to pop in for one of these chats once @gammabomb is done; after all, she’s the one who’d spent the last three weeks off - grid with him without so much as a word, let alone official clearance. a necessary break ------------- not that maria would understand.

her hand settles in his hair once he sits down beside her, fingertips drawing straight lines through the mess of curls from his forehead to behind his ear before repeating the process a few times. “that bad, huh?” she murmurs as she leans in, pressing the first of a series of reassuring kisses against his temple before her forehead takes their place. “i’m sorry.”

he doesn’t react like she’s used to when she does something like this --- it feels more like hesitation than comfort. “ you shouldn't kiss me right now. “

she retreats, but not too far, fingers resuming their trek through his hair. “she’s using SHIELD as a weapon, again, isn’t she?” coming from the entity that likes to hold it’s quid - pro - quo over his head like an executioner’s axe ready to drop if he steps out of line ( what they consider stepping out of line at least ), she wouldn’t be surprised. after all, it’s the same entity they’ve been actively hiding their relationship from --- a task made even more difficult knowing every move he makes is under surveillance --- for fear of being separated. they don’t tend to see the human side to much of anything ---- it's all about means to an end. “because we ignored those orders?” wouldn’t be the first time for either of them, and he knows it. her nose crinkles in annoyance; the barest attempt at a warm - up for the absolute scowl that awaits maria once she’s got herself behind closed doors with the woman. “maybe it's time we start ignoring a few more."
