anyways uhm. moby dick and rdr2 parrelels uh. the fact that ahab's white whale is not only something beyond his control that has slighted him that he hunts down with vigor and no care for whom he destroys around him, but also how in the end it becomes more of a symbol of his hubris, his desperation, and futility rather than the noble cause he sets it out to be. uhm the way dutch van der linde is hunting for his own white whale. the way he chases after a world that he wants but will never make possible like a dog. the way he is his own downfall but he blames it forever on his white whale. and the white whale is real. but is it still him? are they two sides of the same coin? can he understand where it all begins and where it will end? the fact that we are almost a ishmael like figure. we know. we know the end of the story but we can do nothing but watch as dutch becomes the black hole of a man he is. who's consuming who. is it the consumption itself. the sickness. or is it deeper than that? who killed arthur morgan? and who lives on? the story ends with ahab being dragged to the depths on his own rope. refusing to let go of his white whale. dutch's ends with the only kindness he grants his children, that he won't make them do it, he'll do it himself. does it matter that starbuck knew but loved him so that he didn't know how to stop him? hosea wasn't stupid. but he died because his own foolishness too. hosea hunts the white whale just as much as dutch does. but then is wanting a crime? is revenge truly a fool's game? anyways. this is all inspired by that one moby dick reference on one of the cigarette cards.
