Understanding Urban Heat Islands

Recent research published in the journal Nature takes on a subject many who live in cities are familiar with, the Urban Heat Island Effect, and comes to some interesting conclusions about its cause.

Previously this effect has been attributed largely to things like the color of roofs and pavement in cities that tend to be dark, but according to this work let by scientists at Nanjing University and Yale, the ability of air to convect is an additional important ingredient.

The main way this property appears is through convection. In humid areas, the air always seems thicker and it behaves this way as well; humid air has a harder time convecting and it takes a serious wind to stir up the air. If a city is built in a humid area, winds that could have stirred up the air are blocked, trapping the heat and often pollution inside of cities and focusing it at their urban cores.

On the other hand, in dry, desert climates the scientists actually found that the effects are reversed. Desert biospheres tend to be pretty sparse and filled with brush; in these environments, adding buildings actually causes a slight reduction in the daytime temperature because the buildings and obstacles wind up driving convection currents that stir the air up.

Mitigating the urban heat island effect, particularly during heat waves, is important for cities, especially since it can literally save lives. Unfortunately, this research suggests that dealing with the main cause is really difficult because it’s nearly impossible to fully redesign a city. But, in the future, building structures with local air currents and wind patterns in mind, as well as enhancing efforts to reduce the energy uptake of cities (by, for example, painting roofs white) can still have impacts that help save energy and lives.
