ENDEARINGLY LITERATE SONGWRITERS WHOSE “FUN” BAND NAME *MAY* HAVE MUTED THEIR POPULARITY, no. 3. Okay, after enjoying the set from @thenudeparty this afternoon at the @wttsfm stage in our building I was in the mood for The Velvet Underground, and recently had picked this up for (relatively) cheap (for a VU #vinylrecord), and “the Velvets” definitely seem like their success MIGHT have been muted by naming themselves for a novel about sado-masochism or whatever it was. So here we are. This sounds like a friend of theirs brought a cassette recorder to a random live show and that’s what it is—if I’d shelled out $7 for it in the 70s I might have been disappointed when I put it on my fancy stereo set-up. Tonight it was just fine as an #ellipticalsoundtrack and it reminded me a whole bunch of cassettes @johnsheets made of our @mikeshouse shows in the 80s and 90s, complete with rambling between-song patter and tuning, then some songs launched without a perfect tuning achieved. It’s nice to hear some of the Nico songs in this loose rock band version with Lou singing, because I’m not really a fan of Nico. I prefer this version of Femme Fatale and I’ll Be Your Mirror even if it’s lo-fi. Anyway. With such great songs as #imwaitingfortheman #femmefatale #venusinfurs #heroin #alltomorrowsparties love how this controversial album was banned from many a record store for its content - I actually have the real cover that peels to a flesh colored banana - thanks Andy! - everyone pretty much hated this record when it came out - I loved it! However it was the 70’s when I discovered the record . I was a big fan of Warhol and loved Andy’s Work as my Mom turned me onto him and later in life we met in NYC at the great club #area - this album is a love letter to the seedy side of 60’s NYC nothing but love for The Velvet Underground, was lucky enough to see the reunion in New York City Enjoy! NUMBER ONE RECORD, no. 13. The Velvet Underground, The Velvet Underground. Here it is, the #albumcoverart content you crave. Thanks, Andy Warhol, who it says produced, but then you read that he basically just made it all possible—there were other producers, and one of them was Dylan’s old producer Tom Wilson who managed to make some of the songs sound great instead of.... ugh, maybe I just got a bad mid-80s pressing back in the day, but some of the songs just don’t sound well-engineered. It’s all interesting, though, all of it is worth listening except maybe the last track, “European Son,” which maybe if you’re in Andy Warhol’s factory you can enjoy watching them freak out but I usually just have to turn it off—I listened to every last whack of it the night I put it on (I’m writing these sometimes weeks after listening) just because I was trying to get my elliptical exercise in. God. What would Lou Reed have said, what would John Cale think, to have some elderly Gen-X dad doing his midnight elliptical to their drugs and sado-masochism and party people songs? So funny. But man, it starts off so great. “Sunday Morning” is as pretty and full of regret as Kristofferson’s “Sunday Morning Coming Down” over on the country charts, then “I’m Waiting For the Man” with its every-beat-is-accented pounding piano-and-band depiction of buying drugs in Harlem. You don’t have to do it yourself, Lou did it and is reporting back. What a great song. Then along comes Nico singing like a David Lynch nightclub singer, and “Venus in Furs” with its droning viola hiccups. Side One starts stronnnnng. I just wish it all sounded as good.
