Inktober #14: Overgrown

Not sure what I’m doing with 13: Ash yet, so here, have 14. This features a character from the Cold Light universe but not part of that book. He’s a Proxima, like Meg, but instead of becoming a hero or villain with his powers... he does something else.

Max looked over the yard. “Yikes.”

The executor nodded. “It looks like they didn’t do anything to take care of the yard for the past 10 years. When Walter died, the paramedics had to borrow a weed clipper from the wife to get the walkway wide enough that they could get the stretcher through.”

“My God,” Max said. “Is – was there any chance they could have saved his life otherwise?”

“Oh, no, I’m sure there wasn’t,” the executor said. “He was pronounced DOA. But Helen wants to sell the place and move to an assisted living community. Apparently Walter’d been telling her for ten years that he was having things taken care of – either he was doing the chores, or he was having a landscaper come by, or something – and with her being mostly bed-ridden, she took his word for it.”

“That poor woman. She really hasn’t left her house in ten years?”

“Aside from going outside to bring in grocery and package delivery, neither did Walter. We’ve found a few paths he made through the underbrush to get to the gate where they’d leave the packages, but they weren’t big enough to bring the stretcher through.” The executor shook his head. “The best we can figure, either he was a hoarder of garden vegetation, or he had the worst cast of procrastination anyone’s ever seen.” He gave the suburban jungle one last eyeing-over before turning to Max. “What can you do with this?”

“A lot,” Max said, “but too much of that growth is woody for me to just make it all disappear. When green-stem plants die, like flowers and tomatoes, they just collapse to the ground, but woody plants like trees and shrubs and some kinds of vine will still be there when they die… they won’t continue to grow, their roots will shrink and they’ll dry out and be easier to dig out or cut down, but it’s still going to take some work to remove them.” He pulled at a woody vine that had completely swallowed the white picket fence… at least he thought it was probably a white picket fence from the tiny bits of picket that showed through the vines.

“Well, any cost from landscapers coming in and cutting down whatever’s left after you do your job will be more than made up for by what Helen can get from selling the house, and it would cost a lot more to have them cut it all down while it’s alive.”

“Not to mention the rats.” Max looked at the executor. “You did know about the rats, didn’t you?”

“Uh… no. Helen didn’t mention rats.”

“Just for due diligence, she doesn’t have a family of pet possums or a colony of feral cats living on the property, does she?”

“She has two cats, they’re indoor cats and fixed.”

“And they’re not on the property anymore? It’s important that nothing she wants alive should be on the property at the moment.”

“I get that.” The executor’s smile was nervous. Max took a step away from the man, casually, as if he was inspecting the vines, and saw out of the corner of his eye the executor relax slightly. “She’s got her cats with her, I believe.”

“Staying with kids or something?”

“No, a friend’s house. Walter and Helen never had any kids.” The executor snorted. “If they had, I’d be having words with those kids now. Walter was obviously mentally ill or something, and Helen wasn’t physically capable of enforcing him dealing with the yard even if she knew there was a problem, but if they had kids, there would be no excuse for anyone letting their parents live like this.”

“There’s some smallish creatures in the house. Can we confirm she doesn’t have fish, or other terrarium pets she might have left behind?”

“Huh. She did go to her friend’s in a hurry; it’s not like she’s moved out yet. I’ll check.”

While the executor called the widow to confirm whether or not the lives Max was sensing in the house were wanted or not, Max walked along the fence. Most of the life he was going to have to deal with was deep inside, nowhere near the fence. It was a large property, and he wasn’t going to be able to do it by radiating an area of effect, since there were neighbors. He sighed. Dammit, he was going to have to get the hedge clippers himself, or a machete or something, just to get deep enough into the yard to be able to do his job.

“I don’t get paid to be a gardener,” he muttered.

Well, he didn’t get paid to be a plumber either, but there’d been that colony of mutant amphibious mice that he’d had to track through the pipes in that one house. And at least the homeowner was willing to make a clean sweep, none of “don’t touch my prize rosebushes but get everything else”.

Still, he made a mental note to quote the executor a 20% increase in his usual fee.

“Good news,” the executor said. “Nothing in the house is supposed to be alive.” A little nervously, he asked, “How do you know there’s living things in there? Can you tell what they are?”

“I can tell their approximate size, and, vaguely, about how high off the ground they are,” Max said. “What I’m seeing could be consistent with pet fish, or animals in terrariums… or it could be a few colonies of mice living in the walls. There’s also a lot of insect life, all over. Uh. I think maybe you’re gonna want to check for termite damage after I’m done.”

“Wait, there are termites?”

“Some kind of insect living in parts of the wall that I think might be studs,” Max said. “Could be something like powder post beetles if there’s wooden furniture up against the walls.”

“But you can take care of them?”

“Sure can, but I can’t fix the damage they might have done, so get the place inspected thoroughly before you put it on the market. I can certify that I treated the place for you, once I’m done; I’m licensed to certify state-approved no-toxin extermination was performed. There’s bedbugs, too. That’s weird for people who never leave the house.”

“I’ll just… have the mattresses burned.”

“No need, I can deal with those little suckers too, including the eggs. But the mattresses should be thrown out; there’s gonna be tiny little bloodstains all over them. Nothing bio-active, but people looking at it won’t be able to tell it’s been sanitized. Don’t burn them, the chemicals mattresses are made of turn toxic when you set them on fire.”

“Anything else?”

“Major flea infestation. Those poor cats. Let the friend know and get the homeowner have them professionally treated right away.”

“Is that something you could do?”

“Not without making the cats sick. I don’t do parasites on living creatures; I’m an exterminator. I kill stuff. People aren’t a big fan of exposing their pets to things that kill stuff.” It wasn’t impossible; he’d killed skin cancer once, and the person who’d had the melanoma was still alive, but it was delicate work and dangerous and he’d only done it because his friend hadn’t had insurance and he’d been terrified the thing would metastatize before his friend could raise the money for chemo. Also because chemo was probably worse for people overall than one exposure to a pinpoint death touch. Cats were more fragile than people anyway.

“Okay, I’ll let Helen and her friend know. If Helen’s cats infest her friend’s house with fleas, you’d be able to help with that, right?”

“Yep, with all the usual caveats. Get your pets out of the house for the day, that includes any fish, prized houseplants, and if you want me working on your garden you show me every plant you don’t want dead when I’m done, yadda yadda.”

“Sounds good. So when do you want to get started on Walter and Helen’s yard here?”

Max pulled out his phone, did some quick calculations, and presented the executor with the total. “You can give me a check now, or you can call my secretary and give her the credit card number over the phone.”

“We’ll do a check, that’s simplest.” The executor didn’t even blink at the price. Silently Max kicked himself for not raising the price even higher.

“And I’m gonna need those hedge clippers.”

“I figured as much.”

Half an hour later the executor was gone, driven off to get lunch or something, far more than a safe distance away. Max could sense as far as a city block, but he had no idea if he could actually drain life that far away, because he’d never tried.

Numerous supervillains had tried to recruit him since he’d discovered his powers around the age of 14, but Max thought that capes were, in general, ridiculous people. Well, the Peace Force were all right, as heroes went, and his doctor was great despite being a supervillain in her spare time, but why the hell would he ever want to work a job where the entire reason he was on board was to threaten to kill people, or actually do it? He still had nightmares about his grandfather’s death, and the man had been in his 60’s, old enough to die of a heart attack even if Max had had nothing to do with it. Max felt bad when he accidentally killed someone’s pet goldfish – which had happened, in the beginning of his career, because idiots heard “get your pets out of the house” and for some reason mentally tacked on “except for your fish, they aren’t really alive.” Why would he ever want to kill anything another person cared about, let alone a person themselves? Hell, the only mammals he was cool with killing were the rats and mice, and that was mainly because they carried disease and ate people’s food. He wouldn’t take on rural assignments, they kept wanting him to dispose of bunny rabbits and gophers. No thanks. And he didn’t do birds. Pigeons were beautiful creatures and geese were shitheads but mostly just because they weren’t scared of humans, and Max respected that.

His extermination business was certified by the state to be wholly organic and no-toxin, which was good for the environment and for the health of the people he helped. From Max’s perspective, he’d taken a power that terrified most people and kind of screamed “supervillain” to anyone who paid attention to capes, and used it to improve the life and health of people and their pets.

He started at the gate, where the paramedics had hacked a pathway to the house wide enough to get the stretcher through. The pathway was partly the actual original walkway, partly ground that had once been occupied by tall pokeweed plants. As Max walked along the path, he cast his awareness out as far as he could see, to the limit of the yard edge or his eyes’ vision, whichever came first. Life everywhere, from the bacteria and the worms in the dirt to the weedy jungle overrunning every square inch of the yard.

They’d have to replace the worms, when he was done. If Max was going to get all the seeds, he’d have to get everything within the top six inches of the soil. He could leave the bacteria alone – they were small enough that they couldn’t be anything else, and soil needed bacteria to rot the things he was going to kill – but worms were, unfortunately, indistinguishable from small plant shoots, and the garden wouldn’t do well once the worms were all dead.

He stood in the middle of the area he’d mentally bounded, and pulled life energy from it.

Most of the plants slumped immediately. The pokeweed, which wasn’t exactly woody but was easily the thickest non-woody stem Max was familiar with, stood up for a while even as its leaves shriveled, but eventually collapsed on itself. The woody vines and the overgrown shrubs lost their leaves, pulling the water out of any extremity they had in a doomed effort to save themselves. Plants interpreted the pulling of their life force as dehydration, probably because they weren’t evolved to experience this kind of death from any other force.

When he was done… there were still woody sticks and vines and leafless shrubbery everywhere, but everything green was gone, slumped to the ground.

With the clippers, he began cutting himself a path through some raspberry plants that had gotten way out of control, moving toward the side of the house. Once he was far in enough that he could see an area of the yard he hadn’t been able to see before, he did the same thing. Set the range, then pull the life.

It was very important to Max that he could physically see the area he was killing. He could sense life, and its approximate size, so things like the time some absolute shithead had left a child playing in the basement weren’t a real danger for him. He’d notice something as large as a child right away, and had, that time. (He couldn’t prove that said shithead had wanted him to kill the kid so they could sue his insurance for wrongful death, but at the very least the act had been neglectful enough that he’d seen the kid taken away and given to a foster family, and he’d testified at the hearing that had terminated the asshole’s custody. The kid had deserved better.) But kittens, puppies, songbirds, other creatures like that… life came in sizes, for him, and he couldn’t tell the difference between a mouse and a hummingbird, aside from the fact that hummingbirds didn’t stay still as often as mice did and were usually found higher than mice (not always, though… mice climbed on things.) So outside, where most living things were just minding their own business and not bothering the humans, he wanted to be able to see what he was killing.

Back out of where he was, head up to the porch, over to its side where he could see the other side of the yard. Set the range, pull the life. He included part of the house itself in his sweep this time, killing infestations of insects and an absurdly high number of rats and mice. What the hell had been wrong with that guy, that he’d let his disabled wife live in this shithole without doing anything to maintain it or keep the pests under control? Max got the concept of procrastination – the dishes in his own sink hadn’t been done for a week, he just kept killing the fruit flies and mold rather than actually washing them because he hadn’t run out of dishes yet – but this was appalling. He really didn’t want to go in the house, and from what he could see through the windows of the piles of clutter everywhere, the house plainly didn’t want him to go in, either. Hopefully he’d be able to get the place fully sterilized without having to enter.

The whole job took two hours. It was easily the longest a yard this size had ever taken him. By the time he was done, he was twitching with restless energy. The life went somewhere when he took it – it went into him. Max was in his thirties, but physically looked and felt like a man barely out of college; he grew facial hair just so people would take him seriously as a business owner. He’d been sick exactly once since he’d developed his power, mainly because he’d been binge drinking a lot at the time, and apparently that suppressed his immune system no matter how much life force he was brimming with. Max used to know a guy whose power allowed him to siphon off the excess life energy, which he used to pay Max for since he could use it to help sick people for cash, but someone had shot the dude last year and Max hadn’t found anyone else with a similar power set yet.

So here was the part where he wound up the job and went to the gym, because he had to do something to get rid of the energy, and neither of the exactly two girlfriends he’d had in his life had been able to keep up with him in bed when he was like this, so he needed other outlets.

As he left the place, Max looked back at the disaster of a yard. It actually looked significantly worse now – instead of green overgrowth covering everything, now it was sparser, but winter-brown and dry, nothing but lifeless shrubs and the tracery of woody vines still twined around everything despite being leafless and dead. But at least now, the landscapers would have an easier time of it; there’d be no difficulty telling the difference between legitimate, desired plants and weeds when all of them were dead, and dead plants were significantly easier to cut or remove.

He pulled out his cell phone as he headed for his car. “Hey there,” he said to the executor’s voice mail. “I finished the job. Go ahead and send the landscapers in before rats move into the vacuum I just left.”

Max really needed to find someone else who could siphon his excess energy, he thought. The money he’d just made was good, but it’d be better if he could do two or three jobs this size in a day without having to have a few hours in the gym to burn it off before draining anything else. Although, on the plus side, at least now he was really, really buff. Too bad that didn’t help much on the dating scene after he told girls about his power, but it wasn’t like he was going to lie.

Thoughts on the Pigeons of Nottingham

I never realised how large and invasive the pigeon population of Nottingham is until I decided to watch them. They are everywhere. Dominating the Old Market Square, yes, but also nesting on hidden ledges and balconies you can only see from upper floors of the taller buildings. They walk their staccato strut, waiting for us to throw them our scraps. The way the pigeon reclaimed the city was like a long con, a slow burn of adaptation, a subtle pushback against urbanisation.

Pigeons and, to a lesser extent, seagulls, domesticated us, and they didn’t let us know it was happening until it was too late. These brilliant creatures have accomplished this task by letting other animals do the real hard work, then taking advantage. They were the ones who conned – or convinced – us into taking wild animals into our homes, giving them nourishment and shelter and only asking for affection in return. Objectively, this is an imbalanced relationship.

Cats and dogs softened us up. Our instinctive aversion to animals with claws and sharp teeth has dampened. Now, even lions and tigers are cute, adorable animals to be cuddled and played with. Pigeons saw this change in the relationship, and seized their chance. They’re not vermin: No, they’re foxes of the sky. Foxes are typically said to be cunning and strategic, but foxes are yet to migrate away from their natural habitat. The occasional story of a fox sneaking into a suburban back garden pales in comparison to the pigeons making home of city centres. Seagulls sit in-between these two – adapting to humanity like pigeons, and sometimes nesting in the concrete jungle, but they spend most of their time on the coast, scavenging with less subtlety.

Pigeons took a risk with this plan. The urban environment is not safe for them. Some people hate pigeons, shooing them away in frustration or anger. The threat of culls hangs over their heads. This is a shame. Pigeons do no meaningful damage. Who cares if their shit does damage to car paint – that is the most aesthetic damage they could inflict. I’ve seen the dangers of their new lifestyle. An image that will stay with me perhaps indefinitely is the sight of a pigeon on a pavement, head removed from its body and nowhere to be seen. I looked around, but was running late, and couldn’t see the head of attacker. Its spine protruded from its neck awfully, a savage reminder that the rural dangers of the food chain were replaced by the urban dangers of the car bumper.

To the seagull. Whilst pigeons have learned patience and urban survival, seagulls have seen the people come to them, and haven’t learned to get food from humans with optimal efficiency. They expect the generosity of humans, and will steal if it takes too long. I’ve seen a seagull snatch a near-whole pasty, fly off with it and promptly drop it straight into the sea. This ruined the pasty, and theft like this sums up their flawed appeal. Seagulls need to learn the value of patience, for cast off chips and scraps of pasty. Otherwise, seagulls will become an irritating side-effect of a trip to the seaside, even if it is just animal nature.

You wouldn’t imagine Nottingham to be home to many seagulls, and sadly you’d be wrong. They’re everywhere. I can only imagine they’re trying to find a train to Skeggy, or Skegness as the rest of the country calls it. Seagulls are to pigeons what Skeggy is to Brighton. There is much less charm there. Rougher around the edges.

Coming home by train from the west and I’m rewarded with a view of its history. Face forward, as all good travellers do, and I spot the castle on the left. The train lines run under Carrington Street, so I pass through a mini tunnel before emerging out into the platforms. Up the stairs, through the barriers and out the lobby brings you onto Carrington. I exit to the right of the station, onto Station Street, which has been slowly pedestrianised, with a slow cull of the taxis who pooled there.

Slowly, Nottingham has improved its image, updating streets and neighbourhoods. Nottingham was a city born, like most of England’s cities, on a river, the Trent. The city sits just next to the river, a sign on Trent Bridge marking the city limits. The city divides Nottingham Forest (county) and Notts County (city). Confusing, I agree. The city is gentrifying itself and a hipster generation is encroaching on a traditionally working class midlands area. Hockley and the Lace Market are full of the type of establishments that put peaches on a pizza, presumably for the rhyme and not the taste. Despite this absolute scandal, I’m enjoying these changes. They’re so superficial, such surface level changes to the city, but they’re pretty, like a tattoo over a surgery scar. They’re now places to buy indie music and stock up on clothes from trendy second hand shops.

Walking up Carrington, the pigeons are congregating outside Gregg’s and the other food places. The road also passes over the canal, which runs through the city like a vein, carrying cheery old people in houseboats instead of blood cells, and clots with fly fishers. Pigeons love the canal, particularly the dark corner tunnel, where they can hide in the rafters and peer down, ready to put the fear of shit into me. Something about this tunnel has a strange intimidating effect on me. Everytime I enter the darkness, I assume a cyclist will come around the corner and knock me down into the canal. That or a pigeon will shit on me.

Carrington leads to Broadmarsh, a stubbornly ugly area that refuses to gentrify. The shopping centre is ugly. The car park is ugly. The bus station is ugly. The more I type it, the uglier the word ugly appears. In 2014, the city council decided to split the city into quarters. This should’ve been the ugly quarter. There is no beautifying here, no gentrifying these buildings. Their greyness fits the stereotype of the pigeon. The pigeon is a dirty, grey animal, a feral, flying rat. Some people still avoid the street pigeon, imagining that close-ish contact will pass over waves of disease. This attitude would’ve been helped during the era of the Plague, but it’s less necessary with the QMC.

Doves get the glory. Doves are sent by Noah to find land, to seek out the hope of a new life. They’re white, animal symbols for hope and peace. This, even though they are biologically close. They form the bird family Columbidae. Pigeon is French and derives from Latin, ‘pipio’, which meant a chirping bird. Dove is Germanic, and refers to its flight. The greatest glory a pigeon can hope for is posthumous, after being sent to die in a human’s war as they deliver small messages. A scarcely imaginable two-hundred thousand pigeons were provided to the British army in World War Two.

Humanity’s need to personify speaks to our anthropocentric worldview. We need to understand the world around us, beyond the relatively simple theory of food chains and animal instincts. No, they must be savvy, clever, cunning, or cruel, cowardly, vicious. We evolved beyond our base needs, for food, shelter, and pro-creation. Our needs are much more complicated and unnecessary. I don’t need to watch the latest season of the sitcom Silicon Valley, but it would make me happy. I don’t need to write, but it makes me happy. We have ascended Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, and can’t imagine animals are yet to climb.

The Broadmarsh is Nottingham’s designated bad shopping centre. For some reason, towns require A) more than one and B) for one of them to be significantly worse than the other. The Broadmarsh managed, a few years ago, to swallow up the good music shop, Fopp, which gave it a little credibility, but it still feels cheaper than the Victoria Centre, with its regal name and fancy fountain. The Broadmarsh contains posters that promise an exciting redevelopment, but I struggle to become enthused.

Stanford Street is one of Nottingham’s streets that attracts street performers. On any given day, you can be treated to some millennial busker, dressed scruffily and strumming a guitar as they sing Oasis. Stanford, like a decent amount of Nottingham’s city centre, is pedestrianised. This is a natural effect of being so old. Nottingham, named in Celtic Britain as Tigguo Cobauc, or City of Caves. Cities that predate cars naturally resist them. They’re built for the meandering routes that humans take. Old cities wind and bend in a way cars don’t want to. If you ever walk off the Market Square, past the statue of Brian Clough, you’ll see King Street slope down towards you, then make a hairpin turn to Queen Street, and slope up. It is the kind of truly pointless and convoluted piece of town planning that cars require.

Stanford leads towards the Old Market Square, the city’s heart and hub for pigeons and humans alike. This is where you get the clearest view of the human-pigeon relationship, and how one sided it is. Pigeons are like poachers, the goal-hangers of the food chain, not interested in the build-up play of seeking out and killing their prey. Here, the pigeons stalk the concrete, their little heads bobbing back and forth, and avoid the fountains. We feed them our leftovers, individuals serving as scouts for the huddled masses to follow, quickly overwhelming your feet if you don’t throw your bread far enough.

The Market Square, which only occasionally houses a market, serves as the centre to the city, home to the lion statues and council house. I’ve become fascinated by the reaction to pigeons. It disheartens me to see children running at them, trying to intimidate. But there is affection too. Feeding them is an act of affection, implicitly agreeing to their scheme. Feeding any animal as a human, as a dominant species, is a generous donation. We ordain ourselves as the masters, and allow lesser beings to feed on our scraps.

The city is the clearest example of humanity’s need to take dominion and domination over animals. The Broadmarsh centre is named for the area, which was historically boggy. But now you cannot picture in your mind how a boggy marsh could have existed where pale-grey concrete now carpets the ground. The history here is hidden away. The castle here holds within it all the folklore surrounding Robin Hood, history’s first and greatest socialist, but the city doesn’t promote the Hood mythos. There’s a few streets around the castle area: Maid Marian Way, Friar Lane, both roads where my father has worked, but that’s it. Torvill and Dean have a housing estate, there’s a banner near the train station for Byron, Stilitoe and D.H Lawrence. Some history is literally hidden – beyond a concreted over marsh, but caves, networked under the city.

Caves – they scream history. The ones that snake under Nottingham take you into the city’s medieval era, and there’s more than five-hundred in total. They’re so common that a new cave was found in March. They’re the kind of historical feature that instinctively grab a young boy’s imagination, for whom the Vikings were not raping, pillaging invaders but awesome, cool-helmeted heroes. Caves, by definition, have to be old, have to have been put to use centuries ago, had to have been a necessity in some way. Some of Nottingham’s caves were used as pub basements, where the barrels were kept. Clearly, a significant necessity.

I’m headed home. Where I live – middle class, fairly affluent, tennis club – we don’t have pigeons, let alone seagulls. It’s the kind of suburb that attracts foxes, but I’m yet to see one. We don’t see many pigeons because it’s not their home anymore. The pigeon has evolved to get its food from thrown away scraps and nibbling at weeds and worms that have found homes in miniature edgelands breaking through the concrete. My home is, in a surreal sense, more rural than a pigeon’s.

Maybe pigeons need a rebrand, a marketing campaign. Pigeons are not at home in the suburbs as cats, dogs and smaller, cuter birds are, but maybe that should be their next move, the next step in their evolution from street rat to domesticated pet. They do have a curious history with being owned as pets: seeing someone with a pet pigeon casts them as eccentric, off-kilter, slightly abnormal. Domestication may be crucial to the pigeon’s long-term survival. Animals, sadly, need either humanity’s hunger or affection, ideally both, to survive. Anne Matthews defined the moment animals lose this as when "humans stop saying 'Aww' and start calling 911." The cultural carrying capacity has kept cats and dogs warm in our homes, and pigs and chickens plump and juicy.

The lack of pigeons in my suburb, which has fields and the Trent beyond them, is a curious testament to their own urbanisation. Eric Simms, in ‘The Secret Life of the Street Pigeon’, describes seeing a pigeon board the London Underground at Kilburn, go two stops and exit at Finchley Road. I love this story because I love evolution and adaptation. It’s fascinating to me to see a winged creature take the tube, presumably without paying. It’s a sad necessity that humanity has forced upon wild animals, but they’re finding ways around our development.

The Industrial Revolution, the historical nail in the coffin for pastoral life, gave Nottingham its textile industry, but also slums. This is the folly of urbanisation and capitalism – there is always a loser. They are, respectively, the environment, and the worker. The two combine when we decide that nature, systems much greater than ourselves, are either financially advantageous or problematic. Forests can be destroyed until the consumers decide they can’t, and then pictures of executives holding spades and young trees start appearing. Capitalism cannot allow for such trivialities like saving the planet, or supporting the worker. Look at the Market Square: Why does it have to be so concrete? Why can’t grass grow in Nottingham’s centre? Plant turf, plant trees, litter the ground with seeds and let us all breathe a little easier!

Celebrating Those Who Prevent Cruelty to Animals

It can be a daily struggle for many pet professionals who bear witness to animal abuse whether it’s through a social media feed, in person rescuing an abused pet, a veterinarian treating an abused animal or shelter staff taking in one or 100 abused pets. It can really weigh on your soul. However, there are many people working to help stop cruelty to animals, saving animals on a daily basis from staying in the wrong hands as well as providing education. I am lucky to know some tremendous animal rescuers saving animals and also educating pet owners and communities on how they can properly treat their pets.

Almost Home Animal Rescue & Adoption Inc.

One person who helps dogs and cats in her local community from being abused and neglected and also helps owners become educated in proper animal care is Linda Klampfl of the nonprofit organization Almost Home Animal Rescue & Adoption Inc. based in Bohemia, New York. In 2003, Linda became credentialed with Training Wheels, a program for shelters created by Sue Sternberg in upstate New York. Training Wheels takes pet care services out to the community instead of waiting for people to need a shelter, typically at the end of their relationship with their pet. Located on Long Island, Linda found that the need for the Training Wheels program was much different in a suburban community versus a rural community. Almost Home created a humane community outreach program that provides free spay and neuter, veterinary care and pet supplies to those in need throughout Suffolk County, New York.

But it really goes beyond that. Sadly, dogs are still chained up in backyards, which is illegal in Suffolk County but not always enforced. These dogs endure harsh frigid winters, hot humid summers, many tied up for their entire lives without proper shelter, veterinary care or human interaction. And often there is abuse on top of that.

Linda and her incredible team at Almost Home go in with the attitude of helping in a nonjudgmental way. They provide education and encouragement, teaching dog owners to bring their dogs inside; help them by providing proper doghouses and tie outs versus heavy chains; spay/neuter (including transport to and from the veterinary offices); and give pet food, toys and treats for the dogs in their program.

For those who refuse to bring their dogs inside, Linda’s team gives them straw, warm, proper doghouses and visits the more than 130 homes in their program monthly to ensure the dogs are being fed and cared for. The upside is that many dogs are now living indoors as full parts of the family because of the education provided.

If it is a bad situation, they call in the police to enforce the anti-tethering law in Suffolk County. But most of the houses and families that Linda and her team work with are very receptive to and thankful for their help. Almost Home works tirelessly to provide a change for these dogs and cats to live a better life, and some owners even turn their dogs in to the Almost Home shelter, giving them the chance at a better life once adopted out.

Guardians of Rescue

Guardians of Rescue (GOR) started in 2010 and is based on Long Island, New York. It has approximately 400 volunteers across the country doing similar outreach to Almost Home and also helps pets and their owners during natural disasters like the hurricanes in Texas and Florida in 2017.

“We do a lot of outreach all over the country; most of the cruelty we see is negligence in many different forms,” says Robert Misseri, founder and President of Guardians of Rescue. “We work daily to prevent backyard breeders who don’t care for their dogs and often get in over their heads with sick mother dogs and puppies that don’t make it. We often get calls from some of these breeders who then turn their dogs over to us.”

Their outreach includes getting dogs off of heavy chains, into heated and insulated doghouses and even providing full fencing for the dog owner’s yard or fencing an area just for the dog to be able to run around in. They also provide regular veterinary care to dogs and cats that are abused and neglected as well as providing dog trainers for owners who are open to the help and can’t afford dog training.

Guardians of Rescue works alongside the ASPCA on their community engagement in the five boroughs of New York City that used to be the cruelty intervention unit. The goal is to identify dogs left out in the cold, tied up on chains or to get the owners to surrender the dogs. GOR goes far and wide to really give these dogs a much better life. Some people don’t have the financial needs to treat their animal — and GOR helps by providing the proper care that the dog needs.

“We go the extra mile for the people that don’t go the extra mile for their dog,” Misseri says.

GOR also recently purchased a 26-foot mobile veterinary truck to go into low-income areas across Long Island providing veterinary care. Guardians of Rescue is a nonprofit organization funded by small donations. Every day of the year a GOR person is out doing something for a pet in need.

If you see abuse or extreme neglect being done to an animal, say something! If you know it is happening, alert the police, animal shelter, local SPCA and even your local veterinarian office. Sometimes you may have to contact the authorities multiple times. Or contact a local animal organization that can work with the owner, like one with a Training Wheels program.

How can you help beyond reporting someone? If you are an animal rescue expert, offer free classes on dog training, nutrition, health and pet laws in your area. Get volunteer dog trainers and veterinarians to help you. Many times people just need to be educated on the topic to do better for their animals.

If you can’t volunteer, donating to local animal rescues and welfare organizations is a way to help them continue what they do. Sharing information and learning about what happens in your own community when it comes to animal cruelty may just help make the difference in one dog’s life today.
