Quick question but I recently joined Inaturalist and was wondering what the etiquette is around observations. Is it rude to suggest IDs if the observation is old or if there are already IDs that you agree with. What about only posting observations and never suggesting IDs or vice versa? I may be creating problems out of thin air but either way, you seem like the sort of person who'd know. Thank you very much if you decide to answer this!
It is not rude!
Adding ids to older observations is usually very much appreciated! There is no time limit and I regularly sort through 5+ year old obs adding ids
If there are already ids you agree with: also not rude! It's actually very useful, more confirming ids help especially in cases of accounts being deleted
Only posting observations or ids is also perfectly fine! There's no wrong way to use the site. There are professionals on here with 1 observation to 300k ids and photographers with 50k obs and no ids. Everyone does it differently and no way of using it is invalid!
And always feel free to hit me up with questions, I'm always down to help!

[Image description: Preview panel for the comic strip at the link below. The Doctor, tetchy incarnation, of Doctor Who is suspended off the ground by his wrists in a machine with a ticking countdown clock labeled Restrain Hero And Destroy CONTROL HQ Inator. Maxwell Smart of Get Smart is on the other side of the machine pressing buttons. The Doctor is saying, “Agent Smart, you must power the fiendish device up! Then it will overload and implode!" Max is saying, "If you say so, Doctor.” Unfortunately there are not image descriptions at the main Hero Of Three Faces site. End description.]
The Hero of Three Faces is fanfiction crossovers, but it’s comic strips with stick figures, but they’re triangles. Preview panel only. Click here for full cartoon. Or see the on-site navigation tutorial. Or see this blog’s FAQ, or my archive tumblog’s FAQ. Cartoons may contain unmarked spoilers. Cartoons linked from Tumblr 10:00 (Central US time) daily are the previous day’s new update and the posts are pinned to the top of this blog. Cartoons linked from Tumblr 22:00 daily are from the archive and the posts are pinned only during annual summer hiatus of new updates.
Thanks for reading.

AICPA Announces ‘18Q1 Score Release Dates
AICPA Announces ‘18Q1 Score Release Dates
The Q1 2018 score release dates are posted to the Score Release Timeline page of the AICPA’s CPA Examination page. For complete information regarding scoring, please visit the Examination Scoring and Scoring FAQ pages
The National Association of State Boards of Accountancy will release scores to candidates and state boards of accountancy based upon the target score release dates listed in the tables below.
All dates and times are based on Eastern Standard Time zone.
For the vast majority of candidates, the AICPA receives the Examination data files from Prometric within 24 hours after a candidate completes the Examination
The scores for the Examination data files received after the AICPA cutoff dates will be in the subsequent scheduled target score release.
Some candidates who take the BEC section might receive their scores approximately one week following the target release date due to additional analysis that might be required for the written communication tasks.
We encourage candidates to visit the Psychometrics and Scoring page on the CPA Examination website for information about score release and the scoring process.
For updated information, please visit nasba.org.

new to inat, is there any kind of etiquette to follow when IDing? is anyone gonna find it odd if someone with no profile picture is just identifying a bunch of super common stuff?
Nope nobody will find it odd! Random faceless account identifying tons of observations is like, 70% of the site.
The only etiquette is honestly just be open to feedback from other identifiers re:ids
#for real one of the top millipede iders who wrote papers on inat data didnt have an icon or anything until#checks notes#a week ago#nonody will care abt how ur account looks so worry not#inat faq#hawk talks#asks

hello! I have an inat question. Is it beneficial to add IDs to research grade birds (including super common and identifiable ones)? I'm worried that it looks like spamming or gaming the system for ID points :^(
Yes it is! Adding ids to observations that are already RG helps guard against bad faith or incorrect ids that may boot an observation to a higher taxa, and will help the observation keep its RG status if say, one of the identifiers deletes their account(which removes their ids)
Basically it's totally chill

i love to hear that! i feel like individual count is important for data, so i'd like to make separate observations. however, i'm a little worried about the backlash. certain types of inatters can be mean sometimes. do you think people will yell at me? :(
People are usually chill! I don't think so. And if anyone is mean about it, just @ me on iNaturalist(@/hawkparty) and I'll tell them to behave. I'm a curator so they have to listen to me
#hawk talks#asks#this goes for everyone btw if anyone is ever being a dick just @ me#im a behavioral moderation curator ill deal with it for you#inat faq#inaturalist faq

I have a quick question about iNaturalist if you have time to answer it. I know that it is important to hide nest sites of most raptors as they are often heavily persecuted; if I am posting a raptor on iNat, should I try to obscure the location? This is for European raptors, so it might be a different situation if you live elsewhere but I am worried that I could accidentally help people who don’t have the bird’s best interests in mind if I make the location publicly available
Some species will automatically have their locations obscured if it's believed they might be in danger-- all threatened species, and species vulnerable to poaching. So they may be automatically obscured anyway if you post them.
If they aren't, there is no harm in obscuring them for your own peace of mind! You can choose to reveal coordinates to any trusted individuals at a later date if you want to, or even unobscure them.
(I'm talking about the actual "obscured" setting in these, if you set a wide confidence interval from the outset you wont be able to recover a more specific location later)
But this is what the obscure functionality is basically for, so if you think its for the best, then use it

hi youre the inaturalist guy to me i just have a question about it, maybe im just not looking hard enough but is it possible to give ids on other peoples observations on the mobile app? I have to assume it is since id assume most of the people who use it use the app but i guess its possible many use the webpage, but idk, if you know that would be helpful lol. i use an iphone and am in NZ if thats important
Yeah the app is... certainly an app. Basically every high-volume identifier is probably going to be using the desktop site
But it is possible! Full disclosure I use android but the app layout SHOULD be the same. If it isn't ill badger one of my friends with an iphone
Here's a random observation from the explore page. Make sure you're in the middle tab(the one with the comment icon, circled here), and you should see the option to both comment and suggest id

IGNORE THE ABOVE
i skimmed the forum too quickly and fell victim to the classic tiwane blunder(saying theyre probably going to add something to iNaturalist and then not elaborating for several years)
looks like the best thing to do is use this observation field and hope a better annotation is added in the future bc views are uh. mixed rn
https://www.inaturalist.org/observation_fields/14390
heres the forum thread where a lot of this get litigated
https://forum.inaturalist.org/t/lets-talk-annotations/627
inat question! i've been on a huge woodpecker ID kick lately (honing my DOWO vs HAWO skills). A lot of the "needs ID" woodpecker obs are of holes (usually made by sapsuckers and pileateds). How should I tag the evidence of presence? "Construction" and "track" seem right and wrong at the same time. Should I send feedback to inat and ask for some other field? Thank you as always!
I actually went and checked because I was sure I'd seen this litigated before: it's under evidence of feeding!
