The Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus is a theater company based in Dusseldorf, Germany. It dates back to 1818 when it was gifted from King Friedrich Wilhelm II of Prussia. He presented it to the people of Düsseldorf as an elaborate gift.

The theater is well known for holding popular theatrical plays. It has seen a great number of premieres, among other interesting drama plays by Juli Zeh, Martin Heckmanns and Rimini Protokoll.

The theatre is designed like a sculpture where the architects described the style as organic architecture. The great hall (Großes Haus) could fit 900 people at a time, now it can fit 760 people. The small hall (Kleines Haus) can seat 300 people.

The Dusseldorfer Theater presents you a wide range of theatrical plays, from big productions to more experimental offerings – which are usually shown in the smaller of the two halls of the theater.

Dusseldorf is easily accessible by car, Deutsche Bahn, local public transport, bus, and airplane.

Salle Richelieu – Paris, France

The Salle Richelieu is the principal theater of the Comédie-Française. The theater is located in Paris and can seat 862 people at a time. It was inaugurated in 1790 for the troupe of the Variétés amusantes. The Salle Richelieu has been the historical theatre of the Comédie-Française since 1799. It was rebuilt and opened after a great fire in 1900.

The theater was initially intended to be an opera and was built at the initiative of the Duke of Chartres by the architect Victor Louis. At the beginning of the Revolution, it was occupied by the Théâtre des Variétés Amusantes, which were joined by Talma and his friends.

The theater was designed in a classical style. Like other theaters around Europe, this theater offers throwbacks to an altogether different era. It is designed with a grand staircase lined with busts of key players from the theater’s past. Other items include classical paintings, artifacts, sculptures, and objects relevant to the history of French theater, making this a living museum.

Paris is one of the most accessible cities in the world. You can find regular flights, bus, car, train, and tram. If you’re in London, you can get to Paris in a matter of 2hours 16 minutes on a Eurostar train.

Palais Garnier – Paris, France

Palais Garnier is another popular theater in Paris. The theater which started in 1875 was popularized by the most popular and adapted musical Phantom of the Opera. Palais Garnier was the setting for Gaston Leroux’s famous novel “The Phantom of the Opera”. This is opulence is still present both inside and out. The interior is all about ornate light fixtures, artworks, and even bronze busts, which turn this into one of Paris’s most intriguing attractions.

The Palais Garnier also houses the Bibliothèque-Musée de l'Opéra de Paris (Paris Opera Library-Museum), which is managed by the Bibliothèque Nationale de France and is included in unaccompanied tours of the Palais Garnier.

You can take a Palais Garnier Tour for free on the 1st Sunday of each month. The closest train station to Palais Garnier is Gare Saint-Lazare, which is a 10-minute walk away.

Baroque Castle Theater – Cesky Krumlov, Czech Republic

Baroque Castle Theater is one of the original baroque theaters alive today. The Castle Theatre in the city of Cesky Krumlov is a great marvel of baroque. Everything inside the theater is original including stage, auditorium, costumes, and sheets of musical notes. The castle baroque theater was finished in 1766 in time of great popularity of Italian operas and used for almost 150 years.

It opens from the beginning of May to the end of October from 10 am to 3 pm. The reservation system for the baroque theater tours is counter-intuitive and only 20 people can attend the tour at a time.

The theater still uses intricate rope and pulley system. A 3km long rope is used to change sceneries on the stage. Enjoy a live performance in an original 17th Century setting. The setting is as elaborate and theatrical as anyone could wish for.

You can catch a regular train to Cesky Krumlov from Prague, which takes approximately 90 minutes.

Great Theater – Epidaurus, Greece

The Great Theater of Epidaurus is probably the oldest theater in the world. The large Greek amphitheater is the most beautiful and best-preserved ancient theaters. The Epidaurus theater was built in the 4th century BC by Polykleitos the Younger.

Although the performances are not held on a regular basis at Epidaurus, you can still visit the well-preserved amphitheater and relish the ancient history. Due to its excellent acoustics and condition, the theater is still used today, most notably under the framework of the annual Epidaurus Festival.

Although it’s more of a historical relic than an established venue these days, the roofless theater mixes perfectly with the natural surroundings. It’s not hard to imagine an ancient performance with ornate costumes, detailed sets, and theatrical rituals captivating a packed crowd.

The theater can seat about 13,000 spectators at a time. It was built in two phases – one during the 4th century BC and the second in the mid-2nd century – and divided into two parts: one for citizens and one for priests and authorities. The building technique of the amphitheater allows filtering the background noise using an ‘acoustic trap’.

Trains from Athens take approximately 2.5 hours.

National Theater – Prague, Czech Republic

The National Theater of Prague was built in 1881. It was built to uphold the national identity of the Czech people. The National Theatre was opened for the first time in 1881, to honor the visit of Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria.

The original building has seen several additions and upgrades over the years. As such, it’s as unique and dramatic outside as it is inside. It is considered one of the most beautiful buildings in Prague.

Prague is a major rail hub in the Czech Republic, with regular trains from throughout the country. There are also direct trains from major European hubs.

Furniture Upholstery Styles Definitions And Applications

Upholstery is the work of providing furniture, especially seats, with padding, springs, webbing, and fabric or leather covers. The word upholstery comes from the Middle English word upholder, which referred to an artisan who held up their goods. The term is equally applicable to domestic, automobile, airplane and boat furniture, and can be applied to mattresses, particularly the upper layers, though these often differ significantly in design. A person who works with upholstery is called an upholsterer. An apprentice upholsterer is sometimes called an outsider or trimmer. Traditional upholstery uses materials like coil springs (post-1850), animal hair (horse, hog and cow), coir, straw and hay, hessians, linen scrims, wadding, etc., and is done by hand, building each layer up. In contrast, today’s upholsterers employ synthetic materials like dacron and vinyl, serpentine springs, and so on.

Upholder is an archaic term used for “upholsterer”, but it appears to have a connotation of repairing furniture rather than creating new upholstered pieces from scratch (cobbler vs. cordwainer).

In 18th-century London, upholders frequently served as interior decorators responsible for all aspects of a room’s decor. These individuals were members of the Worshipful Company of Upholders, whose traditional role, prior to the 18th century, was to provide upholstery and textiles and the fittings for funerals. In the great London furniture-making partnerships of the 18th century, a cabinet-maker usually paired with an upholder: Vile and Cobb, Ince and Mayhew, Chippendale and Rannie or Haig.

In the US, Grand Rapids, Michigan and Hickory, North Carolina are centers for furniture manufacture along with Long Eaton, Nottinghamshire (England) and many of the best upholsterers can still be found there. Nottinghamshire is also home to Webs training Ltd, a furniture training company that specialises in training apprentices in the furniture manufacturing industry. These artisans continue to create or recreate many antique and modern pieces of furniture.

Furniture re-upholstery continues to thrive in the UK with several businesses small and large providing these services.

Traditional upholstery is a craft which evolved over centuries for padding and covering chairs, seats and sofas, before the development of sewing machines, synthetic fabrics and plastic foam. Using a solid wood or webbed platform, it can involve the use of springs, lashings, stuffings of animal hair, grasses and coir, wools, hessians, scrims, bridle ties, stuffing ties, blind stitching, top stitching, flocks and wadding all built up by hand.

In the Middle Ages, domestic interiors were becoming more comfortable and upholstery was playing an important part in interior decoration. The decorations consisted mainly of what we would now consider as “soft furnishings”, though there were simple platforms of webbing, canvas or leather for stools, chairs and elaborately decorated coverings that already demonstrated the rudimentary beginnings of upholstered furniture. By the beginning of the 17th century chair seats were being padded, but this form of upholstery was still fairly basic. All sorts of stuffings from sawdust, grass, feathers, to deer, goat or horsehair were used, although in England the Livery Company forbade the use of goat and deer hair and imposed fines for misdemeanors. The stuffing was heaped on a wooden platform and held in place with a decorative top fabric and nails. This produced a simple dome shape sloping towards the seat. Only towards the end of the 17th century did upholsterers start to develop the techniques that would distribute and shape the stuffing into more controlled shapes. Curled horsehair was being used more consistently for stuffing that was easier to hold in place with stitches in twine that were developed from saddlery techniques. Thus layers of stuffing could be distributed evenly and secured to stay in place. On a basic level, squab cushions were made more stable by using tufting ties. Stuffed edge rolls appeared on seat fronts providing support for cushions to be retained and later for deeper stuffing to be held in place under a fixed top cover.:p12

What we now think of as “classic” upholstery shapes and techniques flourished in the 18th century. Frames of elegant line and proportion were sympathetically matched by expertly executed upholstery. By now, the upholsterers’ technical knowledge meant that stuffing’s could be controlled along upright and sloping lines, giving new levels of comfort and a simply stated elegance. Later in the century, the border was replaced by a single piece of linen or scrim taken over the stuffed seat and tacked to the frame. At the same time the locked blind stitch and top-stitching combination (pulling the side and top surfaces together and bringing the stuffing up to make a firm top edge) had evolved.:p15

In the Victorian era, fashions of opulence and comfort gave rise to excesses of stuffing and padding. Mass production techniques made upholstered furniture available in large quantity to all sections of society. The availability of better-quality steel springs and the development of lashing techniques enabled upholstery to be built up on seats, backs and arms quite independently of the frame shape. Stuffings became even more complex, edges became elaborately shaped into rolls and scrolls and fabrics were folded into soft padded shapes by means of buttoning.:p12

An automotive upholsterer, also known as a trimmer, coach trimmer or motor trimmer, shares many of the skills required in upholstery, in addition to being able to work with carpet.

The term coach trimmer derives from the days when car frames were produced by manufacturers and delivered to coach builders to add a car body and interior trimmings. Trimmers would produce soft furnishings, carpets, soft tops, and roof linings often to order to customer specifications. Later, trim shops were often an in-house part of the production line as the production process was broken down into smaller parts manageable by semi-skilled labor.

Many automotive trimmers now work either in automotive design or with aftermarket trim shops carrying out repairs, restorations or conversions for customers directly. A few high-quality motor car manufacturers still employ trimmers, for example, Aston Martin.

This is the type of upholstery work offered to businesses. Examples would be restaurant seating consisting of booth seats, dining room chairs, bar stools, etc. Also churches, including but not limited to pews and chairs for the congregation, hospitals and clinics consisting of medical tables, chiropractic tables, dental chairs, etc. Also common to this type of upholstery would be lobby and waiting-area seating. Upholstered walls are found in some retail premises.

Upholsterers may be called upon to repair or replace seating, cushions, cabin furnishings, headliners and even carpeting on boats.

Marine upholstery differs in that one has to consider dampness, sunlight and hard usage. There are many sources for marine grade vinyls such as Spradling and Morbern and they come in hundreds of colors and styles now.

Each style of marine grade vinyl is rated according to cold crack, rub counts, and mold resistance. Stainless-steel hardware such as staples, screws must be used to prevent rust and early break down of hardware and fasteners. The newest products for fastening vinyl in marine applications are Tenara thread and Monel staples. Any wood used must be of marine quality.

Usually a high-resiliency, high-density plastic foam with a thin film of plastic over it is used to keep out water that might get by the seams. Closed-cell foam is used on smaller cushions which can, sometimes, double as flotation devices.

Venice is a tricky city. It is built on water and made up of 118 islands. It must have been a mad genius to start building a city on it in the first place, but I’m so glad they did.

Getting around isn’t as easy or flexible as it is in Rome or Florence, as there are no cabs, cars, buses or trains to negotiate your way around.

It is all done by water, by water taxi (expensive) or vaporetto, which is a waterbus (much more affordable.)

So, it is very important, when looking for the best place to stay in Venice, to plan where you will base your stay before you go.

It is good to know where you are in relation to the attractions you want to see, as well as practicalities of getting there from the airport and getting around on your trip.

1. SAN MARCO: Where to Stay in Venice for your first time

San Marco

San Marco is probably the most famous and one of the best areas to stay in Venice.

When you think of Venice, the image that comes to mind is most likely that of the iconic Saint Mark’s Square, or the Bridge of Sighs with a gondola slowly sailing along it.

Making your base in the San Marco area is good for seeing the top tourist sights, and staying there means you can more easily enjoy the famous square late in the evening or early morning when it’s much quieter and you can have it almost to yourself.

It also means you’ll be very close by for visiting popular attractions such as the Doge’s Palace and St Mark’s Basilica for them opening in the morning, thus avoiding the long lines that are there usually there later in the day.

It has a lot of nice restaurants in it to dine at in the evenings but not late nightlife, so quietens down by around 10pm.

Best 5 Star Hotel in San Marco: Hotel Casanova

Piazza San Marco – Saint Mark’s Square – In the heart of Venice is this magnificent square. It is the best place to just sit and take in the grandeur of Venice.

Saint Mark’s Basilica – Holding court over the view of Saint Mark’s Square is the elaborate and gold-covered Basilica San Marco. The basilica is one of the most stunning churches I’ve ever seen, with its mosaics, gold leaf and imposing statues, it is quite a sight.

Saint Mark’s Basilica Museum – Upstairs from the main basilica is the small but interesting Saint Mark’s Museum. Some of the highlights to see are the altarpiece by Paolo Veneziano, a wood painting from the 14th century illustrating the life of Saint Mark, and fragments of ancient mosaics. Well worth the time and €5 entry fee.

The Bridge of Sighs – The famous bridge is supposedly the last place where convicts heading to Venice’s jail have the sweet view of freedom, therefore sigh as they cross it.

Campanile – The Campanile is the tallest clock tower in Venice. It is an ideal spot to get a beautiful view of Saint Mark’s Square on one side, and the lagoon on the other, plus seeing most of the main island city from the loggia belfry.

Doge’s Palace – The most important building in Venetian history housed the Doge, who was Venice’s religious and political leader. The Palazzo is a stunning work of Venetian architecture and houses many pieces of priceless religious art.

GETTING THERE

Vaporetto – From the international airport Marco Polo Airport (VCE) you can take a vaporetto directly to the stop at San Marco. These are run by Alilaguna vaporetto (water bus) company, and takes about 70 minutes, and costs €14 per person.

Bus – You could also take the airport bus to Piazzale Roma, which takes 20 minutes and costs €6. You’d then also need to take a vaporetto from there to Saint Mark’s Square, which will take about 40 minutes more (plus waiting in between bus and water bus), and this costs €7.50 one way.

Overall if you will be coming in from Marco Polo Airport to Saint Mark’s Square, I’d recommend taking the vaporetto directly from the airport to there.

2. SAN POLO

Rialto Bridge

San Polo is Venice’s smallest district, and one of the oldest neighbourhoods, first settled in 800AD.

Located in central Venice, this area is well known for its vibrant nightlife and fresh fruit and vegetable markets.

The Rialto Bridge – the oldest and most important bridge in Venice – is here, coming over from the San Marco side, along with the Rialto Markets nearby.

This is a great area to make as your base in Venice as it contains many of the major attractions but is a little less crowded and expensive than San Marco.

It also gets our vote for where to stay in Venice with family. There is something here for people of all ages.

By day, the main features are the bustling markets, art-filled churches, squares still used by local families and unique shops in its tiny streets.

By night, it is livelier than San Marco with many small cicchetti (Italian tapas) bars, trattoria, osteria and bars that are busy until around midnight.

San Polo

Rialto Bridge – The Rialto Bridge has stood at this spot, on the narrowest bend in the Grand Canal since the 12th century. Venice’s most famous bridge is the most photographed bridge in Venice. It is full of stores selling Venetian crafts, Murano glass products, jewelry, and higher-end souvenirs.

Rialto Market – Starting in the 11th century as the city’s principal fruit and vegetable market. The market today has two sections; one produce and the other souvenir shopping and clothes.

Campo San Polo – One of my favorite squares in Venice is the Campo San Polo. Despite its vicinity to the major tourist attractions, it retains a distinctly local feel.

Bordering it is my favorite restaurant for pizza in Venice – Birreria La Corte.

Local handcrafts shopping – Hidden in amongst the myriad of winding streets in the San Polo area are great stores with local handicrafts with Venetian Carnevale masks.

I once bought a 19th-century style dress there that they tailored to fit me perfectly.

Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari Church – This is San Polo’s most loved church and it is crammed full of incredible religious art.

The main centerpiece is the Altarpiece of the Assumption. This is currently under construction until 2021, but a full-size copy of the painting is displayed in the meantime.

GETTING THERE

Piazzale Roma bus terminal area and the Piazale Roma vaporetto stop are the most convenient for transport to and around the city and beyond. They are on lines 4, 6, and 7 for vaporetti.

Zattere is the best stop for the Jewish Ghetto area, with lines 2, 4, 5, 6, 10 and 18 serving this stop

3. CANAREGGIO: Where to Stay in Venice on a Budget

Canareggio

Canareggio is the largest sestiere of Venice, both by size and population. It is chock full of history, tradition and many of Venice’s most beautiful buildings.

It spans from San Marco to the Grand Canal and the Lagoon covering much of the northern part of the city.

Part of this area is located just a few minutes walk from the Piazzale Roma, so it has great transport links and is easy to get to and get around from.

The Fondamenta della Misericordia is a particularly good street to make a base with its proximity to Piazzale Rome and the airport buses on one end and heading towards San Polo and Rialto at the other.

Hotels have usually been cheaper in this area, but have been going up in price recently with several hotels getting refits as visitors realize more what a good spot for a base it is.

If you are looking for lower-priced Venice hotels this is a great place to start.

Hostaria Vecio Biavarol dal Puppa

Ca D’Oro – Once one of the top addresses for parties in Venice, it is now a palazzo art gallery open to the public. The Venetian floral gothic styles with influences of Byzantine elements make it one of the most admired buildings in Venice.

Opening hours: Daily 8.15am-6.15pm.

Fondamenta della Misericordia – The long ‘Foundation of Mercy’ street is located just a few minutes walk from the Piazzale Rome, so it has great transport links to the airport, Mestre and other towns out-with Venice.

Jewish Ghetto – A small Jewish community still lives there today and you can visit the five synagogues still there within the Ghetto’s three sections.

This is also a good place to eat as the restaurants have Italian and Venetian dishes mixed with the Jewish style.

Madonna dell’Orto Church – This Venetian-Gothic 14th-century church is still used by locals and is a vibrant part of the northern side of the area on Canareggio Square. It contains artworks by Venetian Renaissance artist Tintoretto and has a stunning statue of the Madonna and Child.

Opening hours: 10am-5pm Monday to Saturday, 12pm-5pm on Sunday.

Jewish Museum of Venice (Museo Ebaico di Venezia) – Locals started this museum to Jewish life and traditions in 1953 to protect the area’s history and showcase the textile manufacturing and goldsmith work done here in the two centuries it was used.

It is also there to educate and celebrate the Jewish traditions in the area and show local art.

Opening hours: Daily 10am-7pm.

Cicchetti – Stop to try Italy’s version of tapas – cicchetti – while in this area. My favorite spot is the Hostaria Vecio Biavarol dal Puppa.

The friendly owner serves up tasty local wine in little glasses for just 1 euro, along with classic cicchetti dishes such as prosciutto and pesto on crusty bread – all home made of course.

He adds his own touch by mixing in truffle oils to the local artisan cheese and sausage tastings. Molto buono!

GETTING THERE

Piazzale Roma bus terminal area and the Piazale Roma vaporetto stop are the most convenient for transport to and around the city and beyond. They are on lines 4, 6, and 7 for vaporetti.

Zattere is the best stop for the Jewish Ghetto area, with lines 2, 4, 5, 6, 10 and 18 serving this stop.

4. DORSODURO

Dorsoduro

Dorsoduro is the intellectual hub of Venice, historically, and still to this day.

It is also where the Venice university campus area is, so is where students study and live. This means the area is good for cheaper accommodation and good deals eating out, as well as having the liveliest nightlife in Venice.

This is where two of the city’s best museums are located – Galleria L’Accademia and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection. So the best of traditional and modern art can be found here.

The lesser-known Dorsoduro is quieter than most areas, with fewer tourists and lower prices. This makes it a good place to stay in Venice.

Fewer tourists mean it’s a more authentic part of the city than most areas, but not far away from the main sights, and it still has its share of attractions. Make this your base if you want your Venice accommodation to be near great nightlife, galleries and places to dine out.

Galleria dell’Accademia – This gallery complex made up of three buildings that used to have religious purposes before being part of the museum.

It has the most extensive and prestigious collection of Venetian art in one place in the world.

Peggy Guggenheim Collection- European and American artists of the 20th century are the main show here, and The Peggy Guggenheim Collection is Venice’s most important modern art gallery.

The collections are held in the Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, an unfinished 18th-century palazzo on the Grand Canal where Peggy Guggenheim lived.

Opening hours: 10am-6pm daily except closed on Tuesdays.

Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute – This church has a history even more impressive than most in Venice. It was actually built by survivors of the plague. They wanted to give thanks for being saved, as 80,000 Venetians perished with it.

It sits proudly at the entrance to the Grand Canal and its striking white domes and stone with grand statues make it one of the most photographed churches in the city.

Opening hours: 9.30am-12pm, 3pm-5.30pm.

Campo Santa Margherita – This ancient square has been the main hub and meeting point of the area since the 14th century. There are stalls to get local treats from in the day as well as many small osteria and trattoria open day and night.

Nightlife – Lining the Campo Santa Margherita is some of the best nightlife spots in the city. Check out Chet Bar for suave cocktails, Café Noir for boho charm and Malvasia all’Adriatico Mar for the wine fans.

If you get fed up of the casual student vibe, El Sbarlefo is a little more upmarket with good cicchetti and live music.

Bus – From Termini, bus H runs to Viale de Trastavere. From Piazza Venezia, take bus 780.

Tram – Tram 8 runs from Largo di Torre Argentina along the main drag of Viale di Trastavere.

Murano is the most famous of the 118 islands of Venice.

It is famous for its glass factories where local artisans have been creating beautiful art for centuries.

Murano can be reached by vaporetto from the mainland easily, with the waterbuses heading over there every 15-20 minutes.

The vibe here is completely different from the mainland of Venice.

It is a lot quieter and more local style. If you’re looking for lively nightlife, Murano is not the spot for you. If you’re looking for peace and quiet, then it’s perfect.

The main things to see and do here revolve around the industry of the famous Murano glass, and food.

The shoreline of Murano is lined with many small trattorias – family-run restaurants.

Evenings in Murano are best spent enjoying a leisurely dinner at one of these, savoring fresh local seafood and long conversations over a bottle of Veneto area wine.

Things to see in Venice near Murano

Museo del Vetro – Check out Murano’s renowned Museum of Glass to see exactly how the famous crafts are created. After you’ve learned how it’s done, you can purchase something to take home from the source at the gift shop.

Basilica di Santa Maria e San Donato – The mosaic style of this basilica that dates all the way back to the 600s is Murano’s Duomo and most important church. It is dedicated to Saint Mary and Saint Donata.

Eat at a trattoria – While the Roman Empire may have fallen, the popularity of Italian food worldwide never will. Osteria al Duomo, Trattoria busa alla Torre, and Acquastanca are particularly known for this using fish caught in the lagoon.

Trattoria Valmarana and Trattoria bar Serenella dal Coco have tasty and reasonably priced fixed menus.

Stroll the waterfront – A passegiato (leisurely evening stroll) is an Italian institution. Mainland Venice can often be too crowded for this simple pleasure, but Murano is perfect for it.

Getting Around Venice

Venice is tricky to get around, but taking a vaporetto (water bus) is the easiest and most convenient way to get from place to place.

Single ticket: €7.50

If you’re only one or two journeys on your stay in Venice, get single tickets when you need them.

24-hour ticket: €20

If you’re planning on going on more than two vaporetto trips in 24 hours, this is the way to go for this.

This is particularly useful to get if you’re planning on doing island hopping out to Murano, Burano or Isola de San Michele, or back to the Piazzale Roma with your luggage on the way to the airport bus there.

Remember is it a 24-hour ticket, not a day ticket, so you can use it until the same time the next day, so you can time accordingly to get the most out of it.

Walking around:

Venice is like a maze. Even if you’ve already been down a little side street, it doesn’t mean you’ll find it easily again.

Other Parts of Italy: If you are continuing your travels to other parts of Italy or taking a day trip, one of the best ways to travel is by train. T

he Santa Lucia train station is just a 20-minute walk from the Rialto Bridge or a 30-minute walk from St. Mark’s Square.

My advice? Try to have WiFi service on your phone so you can ask Google Maps for advice when you can’t find your hotel, or that pizza joint you really wanted to try.

Venice is a muse to many. She is a city that you can (and I have done) visit many times over.

While the big-hitters such as Saint Mark’s Square and the Rialto Bridge are fantastic and always worth revisiting, there is a lot more to Venice in the side streets.

When to Visit: It is popular to visit year round, with spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) providing the most pleasant temperatures of usually around 65-80 degrees Fahrenheit and infrequent rain.

The summer gets very sticky, reaching temperatures over 100 Fahrenheit, especially in August, which is when the locals flee for their holiday homes by the Spiaggia (beach).

Winter (December-February) sees cooler temperatures of usually between 45-65 degrees, and more rain, but also a lot fewer tourists to compete for the sights with.

International guests

If you are a non-resident with a valid driver’s in any other language that is not English, you are required to provide an International Driving permit to qualify for an exotic ride for rent. Therefore, if you intend on travelling from or to a different part of the world whose primary language is not the same as yours and you will be renting a car once there, consider getting an international driver’s license. Some companies will also ask for your passport so remember to go there when you are fully prepared with the right documents.

Security deposit

As mentioned earlier, a security deposit is one of the requirements that most if not all car rental companies ask for. This is just considered as collateral in the event that any damage is caused on the car while it is in your custody. The amount of security deposit your rental service company will ask for will be determined by the class of the vehicle, your age, and the insurance coverage that you have provided. The security deposit on younger drivers tends to be more than that of older drivers because young people are generally considered reckless.

In all likelihood, the office space you occupy doesn’t quite measure up—in any way, shape, or form—to the Washington, DC, headquarters of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID). After all, modern buildings routinely expose us to conditions that may compromise our well-being, sabotage our mood, squelch our creativity, and even keep our focus squarely on Friday at 5:00. By contrast, every high- and low-tech detail of ASID’s workplace has been reimagined and retrofitted to promote physical and/or mental health, the goal being to positively affect both the well-being and productivity of everyone working there. And the results of this nearly-three-year-old experiment, which may one day serve as a model for a vast assortment of cubicled wastelands, have been so striking that it’s not hard to imagine the staff of 30 collectively uttering the unthinkable: Thank goodness it’s Monday.

Among the many hallmarks of this 7,500-square-foot office is the attention paid to the quality of light. The space purposefully faces northwest, so it’s bathed in a soft ambient shimmer throughout the entire day. The interior lighting is synced to parallel the human body’s circadian rhythm, so the bright, white bulbs that supplement the morning sun gradually give way to warmer, yellow hues that help prepare for the brain’s nightly surge of melatonin, the hormone that aids in the control of daily sleep–wake cycles. Sensors affixed to window mullions calculate glare and, if necessary, automatically raise or lower the shades to regulate its intensity.

Equally notable is the attention to biophilia—the human affinity for the natural world, which creates a positive, healing atmosphere. For example, the office is filled with desktop terrariums, window-ledge greenery, and architectural patterns that mimic the natural world—everything from curved, cloudlike ceiling details to a conference room’s rich blue carpeting, fashioned from recycled fishing nets, whose randomized purplish swirls create the sensation of gazing across a not-quite-still pond. What’s more, a prominently displayed flat-panel monitor serves as a digital canary-in-the-coal-mine, offering a real-time snapshot of ozone, carbon dioxide, and other air-quality levels aggregated from sensors scattered about the office. When any of those readings exceed acceptable levels, the HVAC system flushes the space with fresh, filtered air.

Similar attention is paid to the social interaction and self-care the space fosters. There is no assigned seating, for instance, leaving the organization’s employees—including its CEO—to decide each day which workstation, office, or conference table best suits their individual whims or collaborative needs. Sit-stand desks are purposefully angled to provide those facing each other with visual privacy (as a bonus, those angles add another biophilic element). The customer-service area, where workers field some 4,000 monthly phone calls, are designed with thicker walls and acoustic dampening to mitigate the distracting din of the classic office. A consultant analyzed the organization’s demographics to calculate the optimal room temperature—a setting that corporate America has historically configured to accommodate men. A café stocked weekly with organic fruits and vegetables awaits those in need of a healthy snack, while a comfortable out-of-the-way break room is reserved for breastfeeding, meditation, or an afternoon snooze.

Just as significant, however, this “living laboratory” at ASID showcases the intersection of mindfulness and the modern building, which offers the promise of dramatically transforming the structures in which we live and play, study, heal, and even spend the waning days of our lives. It’s part of a growing global movement to create spaces that contribute to healthier minds and bodies—an effort spearheaded by the International WELL Building Institute (IWBI), a New York-based public-benefit corporation founded in 2013. By tapping an exhaustive body of evidence-based scientific and medical research, IWBI devised an elaborate template for measuring, certifying, and then monitoring a wide array of elements that may impact the physical and mental healthfulness of a building’s occupants.

The WELL Building Standard operates much like Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (known familiarly by its acronym LEED), the global green-building rating system that awards points for such practices as collecting recyclables and designating parking spaces for the use of electric and hybrid vehicles. Although LEED also rewards projects for addressing the health of a building’s occupants, WELL has made that its sole focus.

Those seeking the WELL stamp of approval are graded on their ability to comply with the requirements spelled out in dozens of features of health and comfort grouped in 10 broad categories, or “concepts.” Among those in the Nourishment concept, for instance, is the creation of spaces to encourage mindful eating; the features that comprise the Mind concept, including designating areas exclusively for meditation or contemplation, are intended to bolster cognitive and emotional health.

ASID is the first organization anywhere to achieve the highest level (platinum) of both the LEED certification and the newer WELL certification, and a growing number of like-minded businesses and institutions are striving to follow suit. “Increasingly we have the understanding that we can do so much better—that a building can do more than ‘no harm,’ that it can actually enhance the way that we live,” says Rachel Gutter, president of the International WELL Building Institute. “And so this is, I think, the shift to more mindful spaces—being intentional about our design and asking ourselves, How can our buildings be caretakers of the people within?”

A Picture of Health and Happiness

Although we may be genetically predisposed to venture from our caves and connect with the natural world, the Environmental Protection Agency estimates that, on average, Americans spend about 90% of their time behind closed doors, whether in their homes, offices, and cars, or in theaters, restaurants, and malls.

For many, that means being cooped up for half of their waking hours in a workplace whose computer screens may cause headaches and eyestrain. Whose cleaning products may give rise to nausea and dizziness. Whose mold-encrusted wall interiors may provoke sleep disorders or cognitive impairment. Whose drinking fountains may dispense water tinged with unhealthy levels of lead, copper, or mercury. Whose carpeting and pressed-wood furniture may leach cancer-causing volatile organic compounds. Whose cramped, windowless cubicles may foster isolation and despair. Whose culture of presumed around-the-clock dedication to the cause may be a recipe for heart disease, divorce, and depression.

The WELL Building Standard, released publicly in October 2014 and updated in early 2018, offers solutions specifically designed to address these and other causes of ill health, particularly in the workplace. From the get-go, this person-oriented rating system was a natural—if late-in-coming—complement to the more environmentally focused LEED, unveiled in 2000 by the US Green Building Council.

“We’ve known for a long time—literally decades—that office environments can impact human health and productivity,” says Joel Makower, chairman and executive editor of GreenBiz, which has been at the forefront of chronicling the intersection of business and sustainability. “And we’ve known about the solutions, from increased air flow and daylighting to increased worker control over her work space and work style. But it’s taken this long for employers to catch on to the business benefits of healthy, or well, buildings.”

When employers finally do undergo that WELL certification process, specially trained third-party experts score their ability to meet dozens of specific, often technical, benchmarks in each of the 10 concepts of building design and performance, as well as occupant health (the maiden version of WELL included fewer such requirements across only seven major categories). These 10 concepts include good indoor air quality; policies that encourage fitness, proper nutrition, and the consumption of clean drinking water; lighting that doesn’t disrupt natural body rhythms; thermal comfort and strategies to cut down on noise; and the use of products and materials that don’t pollute or contaminate a building’s interior.

In addition, WELL Version 2 added a focus on community—a set of features that prioritizes volunteerism and other forms of civic engagement, along with organization-wide access to the likes of generous support for new parents and family caregivers.

But the greatest changes to the revamped WELL standard are found in the Mind concept, which lays out a detailed set of design and policy strategies to positively influence the cognitive and emotional well-being of those occupying a space.

For example, there is a feature that mandates training for stress management and work–life balance as a means of heading off burnout. Other features address mental health support along with affordable treatments for substance abuse and addiction. In addition, certification requires generous policies related to promoting healthy sleep, granting ample time away from the office, and integrating nature and natural elements into the office. Finally, this section of the WELL Building Standard calls for providing free or low-cost programs of mindful movement, such as yoga or tai chi classes, or devising strategies to encourage mindfulness meditation: offering an eight-week course in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, for instance, or furnishing access to a quiet, calm space where a building’s occupants might join a guided meditation program.

“There’s great research behind mindfulness training and the impact it can have on stress levels and well-being and sleep,” says Emily Winer, IWBI’s mind concept lead. “It has a spillover effect—you feel a little better after you meditate, you relax and it informs your whole day. Then that continues to inform your whole life and how you interact with people. I felt strongly it should be a part of WELL Version 2. There are ways you can design a space to help people get to that frame of mind. It may help create a sense of calmness, allowing you to be more present with your mindfulness practice.”

Doing Good by Doing WELL

The TD Bank in Bethesda, Maryland, a mile from the District of Columbia line, had its ribbon-cutting in May 2016, and two years later earned the distinction of being the world’s first retail bank location to be granted both LEED and WELL certification. Although the building doesn’t have the bowl-you-over optics of the ASID headquarters, it nevertheless offers a telling look at how structures of any sort may one day be designed to benefit both the surrounding environment and those occupying the space, be it for an eight-hour shift or just a few random minutes.

The exterior, for example, boasts a two-lane drive-through topped with solar panels that, according to the store manager, provide about 90% of the building’s electricity. Atop the bank is a living green roof of maturing sedum plants, which helps oxygenate the neighborhood. Two adjacent metal grids affixed to an exterior wall support a towering web of flowering ivy each spring and summer, which effectively releases stormwater from the roof and, as a bonus, adds an appealing counterpoint to a suburban panorama otherwise dominated by 12 stories of red and tan brick.

In addition, vivid waist-to-ceiling murals of drooping leaf-covered tree branches splash across two adjoining walls, a welcoming nod to the physical, mental, and behavioral benefits that may be realized by contact simply with images of nature.

Plaques scattered throughout the bank provide customers with tips about optimum thermal comfort and proper hydration (a water-bottle filling station is near the teller counter); an intimate café space includes a Wellness Resources Library with background about the WELL certification process and healthy lifestyle changes. Free coffee is provided, but non-dairy creamers, typically laden with hydrogenated vegetable-based fats, have been banned from the premises. (Highly processed foods are frowned on in a feature of the WELL Nourishment concept.)

Unlike the aging TD location I usually patronize, which was acquired in a late-2007 merger, the design, details, and employee energy of this new WELL-certified operation create a noticeably more positive and welcoming experience. Interestingly, the signage, the literature, and the prominently displayed certification awards in the new bank serve as catalysts for the staff to engage customers about this undertaking to create a healthier environment—in the process raising awareness about how the community may benefit and, if history is any guide, possibly spurring others to follow suit.

Jacquelynn Henke, Vice President of Sustainability & Innovation for TD Bank, says that that’s precisely what happened when one of TD’s locations in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, became the nation’s first net-zero energy bank—i.e., the building’s 400 solar panels generated more kilowatt-hours over a year than it used, allowing the company to feed this surplus energy into the local power grid. “Within two or three years, probably four blocks away, another bank opened a net-zero energy store,” Henke says. “So sometimes all it takes is being first in that community, or very close to the first, to help set that leadership path and get others thinking about it and raising the awareness.”

At the moment, TD Bank has just one other store—in Princeton, New Jersey—that also earned its WELL stripes, meaning that some 1,300 of its locations across the eastern United States haven’t scored the certification plaque, and in many cases likely never will. But Henke says the bank is taking lessons learned from the Bethesda and Princeton stores and applying them elsewhere, so the WELL program benefits will nevertheless be spread far and wide as the building-renovations cycle unfolds over the coming years.

The WELL program’s Rachel Gutter says that’s precisely the sort of ripple effect that this certification process can create throughout an entire workforce. “You can’t offer paternity leave and better travel to your employees one building at a time,” she says. “From an equity standpoint, you have to offer them to all your employees. So while an organization might pilot WELL in one building, if they choose to adhere to those commitments over the long haul, they’re going to have to roll them out on an organization-wide scale.”

“We’re not in the business of selling registrations and certifications,” she adds. “We’re in the business of transforming the market. The beautiful thing is that when you do transform the market, everybody comes along.”

There’s No Time Like the Present

Before moving to its current headquarters, ASID partnered with Cornell University and two research firms in hopes of gauging how those WELL-certified digs would affect, among other things, the health, performance, and job satisfaction of its employees. Not surprisingly, the pre- and post-occupancy surveys revealed that the staff appreciated everything from the better air quality and acoustics of the new office (sound levels were cut in half) to the physical comfort of the ergonomically engineered workstations and the emphasis on access to nature. Moreover, the unassigned seating and open-office layout sparked more interactions and collaboration, while one-quarter of the staff attributed the office’s circadian lighting to them getting a better night’s sleep.

For its part, ASID management realized a jump in productivity and collaboration, reduced its energy bills by thousands of dollars, and anticipates dramatic cost savings going forward due to lower employee turnover. Ultimately, the organization expects to recoup its investment in this “office of the future” in the first half of its 10-year lease agreement. And as CEO Randy Fiser notes, this move to create a healthy workspace is also paying the sort of intangible dividends not quantifiable by surveys or bottom-line computations: “My position as CEO requires me to travel 70% of the time, including internationally,” he says. “After a trip, I make a point to be back in the office to reap the benefits of the circadian lighting. It helps regulate my rhythms and gets me back on the proper time zone quickly.”

These many benefits realized by those occupying WELL-certified buildings aren’t surprising, as workplace programs to promote employee health and well-being—whether via mindfulness training, the incorporation of biophilia, or technologies like those that grace ASID headquarters—have been shown to cut absenteeism, sick leave, and the costs associated with health care and disability.

“Healthy buildings finally pencil out: They make sense financially, and in some sectors and markets may be seen as a competitive advantage in attracting and retaining employees,” says Joel Makower, of GreenBiz. (Full disclosure: He has been a friend and colleague since publication of his 1981 book, Office Hazards: How Your Job Can Make You Sick.) “It’s no longer a nice thing to do, or even just a way to lower operating costs. It’s rapidly becoming a de facto standard for landlords and companies.”

It’s not only traditional businesses, however, that are paying attention to this phenomenon. Although the first iteration of the WELL Building Standard was crafted with office buildings in mind, Version 2 is adaptable for pretty much any type of project but a single-family home, and so far interest in pursuing certification has come from warehouses, airports, resorts, restaurants, affordable-housing projects, military installations, and a YMCA. What’s more, there has been a tremendous surge in demand for WELL-inspired elder-care facilities, as aging Baby Boomers scheme to outrun the actuarial tables while simultaneously bolstering their quality of life.

Of course, complying with 112 multi-part features spread across 10 diverse concepts may require budgets beyond the means of some hoping to emulate the WELL pioneers, possibly constraining this movement’s evolution. For example, Traci Rose Rider, PhD, coordinator of North Carolina State University’s Design Initiative for Sustainability & Health, says that, by and large, public school administrators aren’t yet asking for the likes of biophilia and innovative building-related technologies. “You could say, ‘I want circadian lighting for all these kids, and we think it might work. Or we could use those funds to patch the roofs on the four buildings that need patching.’ So there is a huge funding issue, and so far the people adapting it are those that have the money and dedication to do it, often larger corporations.” Similarly, while blue-sky thinkers envision adapting WELL for such structures as prisons—which research clearly demonstrates would contribute to inmates’ psychological well-being—retrofitting a supermax to bathe cells in north-facing light and insure optimum thermal comfort is not likely on any horizon.

But in the meantime, it’s clear that a WELL-certified building can fit seamlessly into a shifting corporate culture that has begun adding to its ranks chief wellness officers and chief mindfulness officers, just as it routinely added chief sustainability officers over the past decade to monitor and improve environmental efforts.

“We believe in the triple bottom line: Shoot for the intersection of people, planet, and prosperity,” says Rachel Gutter. “If your employees are more present, if they’re more satisfied, if they’re more engaged and more productive, then everybody wins.”

Force of Nature

Here’s one WELL-inspired strategy for feeling right at home.

Since the launch of WELL in late 2014, its healthy-building standards have been applied to more than 860 projects around the globe, some 300 of which are spread across the United States. Although most of these American projects encompass office space, others completed or are being prepared for the certification process include a retirement community in Colorado, an environmental charter school in Pennsylvania, and a pricey 15-story condo development in lower Manhattan’s historic Flatiron District.

At last count, WELL projects could be found in only 33 states, with one-third of them located in New York and California. As a result, while this emerging phenomenon shows promise of dynamic expansion, for the moment, at least, few stand to reap the rewards of a building certification process designed to enhance human health and well-being.

It’s still possible, however, to realize the benefits of WELL by applying its standards to your own living space, be it a wide-open manor house or a dinky studio apartment.

The WELL Mind concept, for example, identifies a wide array of features that play significant roles in our cognitive and emotional health, including one in particular that can be readily adapted in any home: biophilia, the human affinity for the natural world.

Interestingly, people benefit from direct contact with foliage, natural light, and other environmental elements, but also from exposure to images of the outdoors, and even to objects inspired by the shapes and patterns found in nature. Research has demonstrated, for instance, that hospital patients not only heal faster by having plants and flowers by their bedside, but also by having a window in their room with a view of trees. Similarly, prisoners confined to maximum-security cells were found to show positive behavioral changes after being allowed to watch nature videos for 40 minutes a day.

But plopping a lone Venus Flytrap on a coffee table is unlikely to tamp down blood pressure or help throttle the heebie-jeebies. “Biophilic design is not intended to be just about a plant here or a water feature there,” says Vermont-based architect and biophilic-design consultant Elizabeth Calabrese, AIA. “It’s actually about tying nature and natural systems and processes into our lives.”

To that end, Calabrese advises that we think about our living space as a little ecosystem, whether that means filling it with a variety of greenery able to thrive in the available light; or incorporating natural materials like pottery, tile, or a wood table; or relying on dappled light filtering through trellises that fill the home with patterns that change throughout the day.

In addition, you can bring nature into your living space via views of a flower-filled window box, bird feeders, or water features, which provide the added benefit of helping to drown out the sound of traffic and other noise. A porch swing or rocking chair will connect you to the outdoors, as will sheer cotton window coverings fluttering in the springtime breeze.

Every little bit helps, Calabrese says, although overloading your home with such elements can actually sabotage the goal of crafting a healthy ecosystem. “Balance is the key,” she adds. “More isn’t necessarily better.”

So there you are, strolling leisurely beside Copenhagen's picturesque harbour, admiring the beautifully renovated warehouses and shiny contemporary architecture, when all of a sudden a voice in immaculate English, with a slight Scandi twang, says, "Excuse me, this lane is for bicycles."

I look down and see I'm standing on a path that, very clearly, has a bike symbol marked on it. I apologise and shuffle back to the lane designated for pedestrians, a little embarrassed but confident I'm not the only tourist to make this mistake in Copenhagen, one of the planet's most pedal-friendly cities.

It's said that 400 kilometres of cycle paths snake through the Danish capital, and that around 50 per cent of residents regularly bike to work, school or university (and the pub). There are ample paths and promenades for walkers, too, but as they're often adjacent to the cycle lanes, it's easy to drift, especially when you're distracted by something, as you often are in Copenhagen, which Lonely Planet has decreed the world's top city to visit in 2019.

This one-time Viking fishing village became the capital of Denmark in the 15th century and its majestic regal sites and palaces are among its leading attractions, along with the Tivoli Gardens, an eclectic theme park at the heart of the city, and the Little Mermaid, a bronze statue immortalising one of the fairytale characters of Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen. Perched on a rock, close to Copenhagen's cruise port, it's a fair trek from the city centre and almost everyone who comes wonders what the fuss is about when they see its modest size.

Far more visually striking are the modern landmarks that fringe the shores closer to town and that are helping to revitalise derelict naval and industrial zones.

The newest example is Blox built on the site of a former brewery near the Danish parliament and HC Andersen Boulevard (a road, incidentally, that isn't as idyllic as it sounds – it's central Copenhagen's busiest thoroughfare, its six lanes slicing through the city's core).

Unveiled in May, this jumble of glassy cubes of varying shapes and sizes seemingly stacked atop one another, has been labelled a "micro-city within a city" and contains housing, offices, work spaces, a gym and enticing draws for culture vultures and foodies.

You'll find Blox Eats, which is co-owned by Claus Meyer, co-founder of Noma which has been rated world's best restaurant several times and has become a legend of "new Nordic" cuisine. It recently moved to a new location near Christiania, a hippie-ish commune in Copenhagen's east, and tables there are still notoriously tricky to come by but Blox Eats has a no-reservations policy.

It's a very different affair, though. Instead of elaborate 17-course tasting menus à la Noma, it keeps things relatively simple with salads, baked goodies and smorrebrod (Danish open-faced sandwiches), plus tantalising soups, such as a Thai-style offering with pollock (a North Atlantic fish), mussels, noodles, herbs, coconut and crispy crudites). Menus change weekly and at least 30 per cent of ingredients are organic.

Blox Eats' first-floor food hall is open for lunch on weekdays, while its ground-floor, espresso-scented cafe-eatery welcomes customers daily until 10pm (weekend brunch is one enticing option).

Blox is also home to the Danish Architecture Centre and its DAC Cafe, which has three rooftop terraces with splendid views of Copenhagen. The Centre's galleries and gift shop showcase the Danish flair for design, which infuses everything from landmark buildings to the furniture inside. A recent exhibition explored the genius of Jorn Utzon, the Copenhagen-born mastermind of the Sydney Opera House.

It's somewhat ironic, I ponder as I exit the building, that Blox was crafted by OMA (Office for Metropolitan Architecture), a practice founded by Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas.

Danish fingerprints are, however, all over the design of other contemporary gems flanking the harbour, including the Black Diamond, a pebble's throw from Blox. Clad in polished black granite, it was completed in 1999, as a shiny extension to the red-brick Royal Danish Library. Skywalks connect the two sections, which couldn't be more different in style and vibe. While the original part feels a bit Hogwarts, with wood panelled reading areas, antique bookshelves and hushed voices, the Black Diamond is flooded with natural light thanks to its tall atrium. There's a vibrant cafe buzzing with Copenhageners of all ages, plus a concert hall and exhibition spaces.

Dubbed a "theatre machine", the Royal Danish Playhouse is another key cultural venue in a gleaming boxy shell. Renowned for its ballet and drama productions – ever fancied watching Shakespeare in Danish? – it's around the corner from Nyhavn, a cobbled quayside tourist magnet lined with yachts and pastel-hued 17th and 18th century townhouses.

Looming diagonally across the harbour is the most controversial of the city's 21st century icons. Costing about US$500 million, the Copenhagen Opera House was designed in so-called "neo-futuristic" fashion by the late Danish architect Henning Larsen, who trained with Utzon. It was panned by critics when it opened in 2004. Some dismissed it as a spaceship or the grille of a vintage Pontiac car.

Larsen himself reportedly reckoned it looked like a toaster and regarded it as a "failed compromise" (he had creative differences with the project's backer, Danish shipping magnate, Maersk McKinney Moller). I can't help but like it, especially its enormous cantilevered "lid". As with many of Copenhagen's prominent new buildings, it's ultra-mesmerising after dark, illuminated with colour that reflects off the water.

The opera house is linked to Nyhavn by water bus and also via Inderhavnsbroen, one of the dual cyclist-pedestrian bridges that swerve over the harbour. Guided tours reveal the building's stunning ensemble of limestone, oak, glass, bronze, maple, gold leaf and Sicilian marble. On a tour of the building, visitors are led round the backstage areas and into the vast main auditorium which can seat an audience of around 1500, who come for everything from Puccini to Kylie (she performed here in November).

From the building's lobby, there's a wonderful panorama of Copenhagen's spire-dotted skyline. Glance across the harbour and you'll see the royal district of Frederiksstaden, home to Amalienborg, residence of Margrethe II, Queen of Denmark, and Frederik's Church, a neoclassical jewel with an incredible green copper dome.The Marble Church, as it's alternatively known, was a project involving two high-profile 18th century architects: a Dane, Nicolai Eigtved, and a Frenchman, Nicolas-Henri Jardin.

For dinner, I go Gallic-Nordic at Zeleste, a charming restaurant serving Danish food with a French twist on Store Strandstraede, an affluent street between Nyhavn and Frederiksstaden. Occupying a quaint 17th century building, with rustic furniture, fireplaces and "Copenhagen's cosiest courtyard", Zeleste scores highly on the hygge scale.

Hygge, pronounced hoo-gah, is a Danish phrase for conjuring a warm atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life with loved ones. With a glass of Loire Valley sauvignon blanc for company, and jazzy trumpet tunes floating through the air, I have chilli chickpea salad with mustard vinaigrette, codfish with kale and mussel foam and a "deconstructed" cheesecake, its crushed base sprinkled with edible flowers onto creamy white chocolate.

Like so many things in Copenhagen, it simply has to be photographed, and, thankfully, it's utterly, lip-lickingly delicious as well.

Although I have a proven love of Flanders, I haven’t given the French-speaking region of Wallonia in Belgium as much attention. Last trip, I felt I should make a little more effort and chose somewhere not too far from Ghent, where I was staying. The result? A visit to the city of Mons in the region’s west. The only problem was that I didn’t really know what to see in Mons, Belgium.

Even compared to fellow Wallonian city Tournai, Mons is a fairly off-the-beaten path kind of place. Then there’s the decision to visit in winter too. Even with the odds stacked against me and my visit, I did learn that yes there are things to do in the European Capital of Culture in 2015.

I definitely missed a few of the city’s attractions, particularly museums like the Beaux-Arts Mons and the intriguingly named Mundaneum. Still, hopefully what follows will answer the titular question and give you the right impression about what there is to see and do in Mons.

Mons Belfry

Why not start with the most iconic landmark of Mons first, right? That honour goes to the UNESCO-recognised Belfry of Mons. Joining the great pantheon of belfries in Belgium and France, this one still manages to be unique. Thanks to its Baroque architecture, the Mons Belfry it the only one of its kind in Belgium. Built in the 17th century, its gentle stone appearance stands out from the typical Wallonian brick buildings.

Inside the tower you’ll find a museum to the tower’s history, including multimedia displays. The tower also enjoys the best views of the city, although the best vantage point for photos is behind glass windows. Still, a nice view is a nice view.

Grand Place

Just as it would be in any other Belgian city, the Grand Place of Mons is an important stop. The main square of the city, it’s lined with some of the city’s grandest buildings, plus plenty of beer cafes and brasseries to choose from. Grand Place is also the scene of an annual festival, the Lumeçon, where the legend of St George and the dragon is played out.

Visiting just after the New Year, the square was still set up with winter market stalls, a Christmas tree and even an ice rink. However, due to a freak warm snap, the ice did seem to be melting…

Town Hall

The most eye-catching of the landmarks around Grand Place is certainly the Mons Town Hall. Fans of Belgium’s obsession with Gothic architecture will be pleased stark facade. Built in the late 15th century, I’m sure it dominates visitors’ attention when there’s not a Christmas market in the way.

The building has a number of details that reward a closer look, from its beautiful little bell-tower to the small monkey statue at the front. For those curious by the interior, it is possible to tour inside the town hall upon special request.

Mayor’s Garden

Something I wasn’t expecting in Mons was essentially a secret garden. Walking past the ornate door of the town hall through its inner courtyard, you come out at the Jardin du Mayeur, the Mayor’s Garden. Although it’s not really, it feels like an intimate and private garden, but it’s fully accessible to the public. It’s said that this is the best place to hear the chime of the Belfry.

My absolute favourite thing about the garden was the statue of “El Ropieur” seen above. Decked out in festive attire, he casually leans by the fountain, cheekily splashing the water as it comes out.

Church of Sainte-Waudru

It wouldn’t be a European destination without a trip to a church and for Mons, that likely means the Church of Sainte-Waudru. One of the first sights you see as you approach the centre from the train station, it cuts quite the colossal figure from below.

Inside you’ll find some more grand Gothic architecture, some superb woodwork and quite a nice organ. Rather out-of-place though, is the elaborate and lavish carriage used as part of the Lumeçon festivities. Beyond what is openly visible inside the church, there is also the church treasury which is said to have some beautiful artifacts.

“The Passenger” Art Installation

The city of Mons sought to celebrate the honour of European Capital of Culture in 2015 in various ways, but this art installation seems like the most noteworthy. Titled “The Passenger”, it’s modern, striking and the sight of it is unforgettable. Rarely does modern art fascinate me quite like this.

Designed by the artist Arne Quinze, this huge wooden sculpture hovers over the Rue Nimy just off the main square. While you can read about the artist’s meaning behind it in the previous link, to me it looks like the neighbouring church is mid-explosion, the debris frozen mid-air. Regardless of how you perceive this installation, it’s hard to argue that it’s not impactful.

Wallonian Architecture

Beyond their different languages, there are various differences between Flanders and Wallonia. One in particular that I noticed in Mons was the look of city streets in Wallonian cities. I’m not sure that I can quite put my finger on it, but there’s something there.

It seems like cities in Wallonia often have a darker colour scheme than those in Flanders. There’s also the matter that there are red brick buildings everywhere in places like Mons. Regardless, all of this goes to say that visiting Mons helps build a more rounded idea of what places in Belgium look like.

Street Decorations

One thing I noticed walking around the city was that Mons doesn’t shy away from a little silliness. Here and there in town you come across bright street decorations that aim to liven it up on grey winter days. First, there’s the lamp shades zigzagging down one of its streets. No explanation necessary.

The other is a bit of Belgian trend that I noticed in other Belgian cities too over winter. Belgian’s seem to like adding knitting to things, from trees to statues. In Mons, I came across multiple cases of knitted baubles hanging from trees and cosies covering statues and the like. I guess they get cold too.

Tips for Visiting Mons, Belgium

To get to Mons by public transport, you’re going to be taking a train, most likely from Brussels. The journey takes a little under an hour so even if you’re coming from elsewhere, it should be easy. Alternatively, you should look at renting a car for your time in Belgium, as Mons isn’t the kind of place where tours go.

Mons is certainly a destination where one day seems sufficient, but should you wish to spend the night there is a modest offering of accommodation available.
