3: what is a very unpopular band you’re into? tell a little bit about them
If this means unpopular in the sense of disliked, well, I still dig the Beatles despite the backlash in recent years. My best friend and I went through beatlemania 30 years too late when we were 12, and they were such a cultural phenomenon it always surprises me a bit when someone has never listened to them (like… how did you avoid it? but yay I get to tell you about Maxwell’s Silver Hammer because nobody ever listens to the lyrics and it’s hilarious to explain what it’s about!), and they really did make some very catchy tunes. I could probably sing 99% of Beatles songs off the top of my head.
If this means unpopular in the sense of no one’s ever heard of them, well, I am into quite a few bands that I discovered because they play at local ren faires and junk so they are not widely known. Or else, like, filkers, and that seems even less known beyond very specific fandom circles.
Dread Crew of Oddwood is a very fun pirate metal band who I rush to go see whenever they’re in town. I drank mead with them once at vikingfest and sometimes I run into former band members at local metal shows. They have a toy piano and an accordion among other things and they sing some filthy stuff now and then, and sometimes they set Coleridge to music so that’s an experience.
Vana Mazi is eclectic world folk with lots of Roma influence and also quite catchy and will make you want to get up and dance.
Freestylers of Piping are great because what more do you need beyond bagpipes and drums, rly.
Lucky Chops amuses the heck out of me because one doesn’t really think of brass bands as jamming out but they do, and when I saw them opening for Gogol Bordello they had a big shirtless sousaphone player so that was great.
Tengger Cavalry is amazing Mongolian folk metal and they sing khoomei in their metal it is so great and I have seen them every single damn time they have played in my city, imagine a mosh pit to the sound of throat singing yaaaas.
Also I have to put a word in for Metsatoll, though they are probably very slightly better known than the rest here, but they are an Estonian folk metal band that I discovered when they were opening for Korpiklaani back in 2013 and their folk instrument guy, Lauri, is one of those people who seems to be able to play every damn instrument beautifully, and he also just seems like a rly cool dude.
And I also feel I ought to mention Biff Rose, although this veers wildly from the rest of the list, just because he is so little known and it’s one of those odd cases because young David Bowie was influenced by his work but even people who are fans of 60s music rarely know his stuff.
8: which song do you think should everybody listen to at least once in their lives?
Answered!
19: which bands would you like to see live one day?
I have been fortunate enough to see many of my faves already, but the names I have not yet crossed off my wish list include Ensiferum, Finntroll, Turisas, Manegarm, Wintersun, Omnia, NIN, Tom Waits, Opeth, Metallica, Arctic Monkeys, and Everlast. And I should probably attempt to see Paul McCartney live while he is still, um, alive. I’m sad I didn’t ever get to see David Bowie or Tom Petty so I try not to miss my chances anymore. (Although it was admittedly very weird to realize I saw Leon Russell at one of his very last shows...)
(Also my folk metal faves need to start touring in the States again because I need my fix and can’t get my ass to Europe all the time…)
