Portrait of Paul Fusco (2024)
India ink and watercolor on watercolor paper.
Excited to share a piece I did in collaboration for a zine showcasing previously undigitized photography of the late Paul Fusco. It is being distributed for Magnum’s 77th general meeting in Arles, France. To see his work and the zine in full; follow @paulfuscoestate on Instagram.

Have you ever drawn traditionally? Say, with pencil?
Oh yeah, of course! That's where I started actually. I didn't get into digital drawing/art until college, and even then I mostly drew traditionally. Ironically, I was slow, and even at a point stubbornly refused to do digital art for a while. But since it became more accessible and I found that it fit will with my interest in comics and animation, digital ended up becoming my main medium!
Old art incoming!
I used mostly pens and pencils, and stuck largely with black and white, and very little color. Below are some of the oldest pieces I could find at the moment. They're from 2008/2009, when I was 16-17 years old. One is a page from an old comic that I did, and another is the rare opportunity that I had to work with copic markers

(these can still be found on my old deviantart (@/jadethestone) account haha)
I also did Inktober for a few years. For 2017 I used just ink pens, for 2018 I created India Ink portraits, and for 2019 I used some brush-tip ink-markers which were fun and colorful (all can be found on my instagram (@/renaissancef0x) if you dig far enough)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I actually really like working with India Ink and doing portraits. I even liked combining it with a bit of watercolor for a splash of color! These are my more "recent" pieces from around 2019. The second one was part of a series that was featured in a couple small galleries in Tokyo for a short time
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The main reason why I don't do traditional much anymore is because it takes up physical space and materials are more expensive. Also, I became more known online for my comics and such, so that's what I started leaning towards. When I started opening up commissions, I even offered traditional portraits, but no one wanted any, so I took them off this year.
It would be nice to have more opportunities to do/show off my traditional art skills, but I'm very focused on comics and animation now and I work better digitally with them

Art Prints Now Available!
Tumblr media
So, I'm glad I'd already started on this because wife and I just got our housing assistance determination yesterday and they decided that none of my many medical expenses count, because I've not been able to convince the right agencies I'm disabled enough (despite. you know. about to have Part 1 of a surgery for an implant that's not usually needed unless you're decades older than me, and the severe PTSD, and the cane, and chronic pain, etc etc)... so it looks like we have a lot more disposable income on paper than we actually do. I was expecting them to cut our assistance, and we would have been okay if they did. But they decided to cut it to nearly nothing, which is incredibly stressful. I'd like to be able to make enough money to not need the assistance and have the peace of mind of stable housing that can't be taken away by some unknowable and cruel eldritch horror of means testing, finally. I have a range of over 60 prints available now at my InPRNT shop.
They also offer cards, stickers, and phone cases and are currently running a sale. I only have one phone case listed currently since they require special specs on the website, but if you'd like to see more, feel free to say so in the notes of this post or message me (and specify which one(s) you'd like to see so I can get on that). I also have prints available through my portfolio at my ArtStation. The colors don't appear quite as bright in some pieces, but some people might prefer that. They also offer different sizes of some items. They also don't have my fanart (besides fanart of public domain properties) because of their fanart policy for prints, but do have prints of more violent pieces because of their mature content filter rules.

Portrait of a Ladakhi Mountain Goat [Changthangi*]
India, Mughal dynasty, c.1601-25
Opaque watercolor, ink, gold on paper
37.9 × 25.6 cm (14 7/8 × 10 1/8 in.)
The Art Institute of Chicago 1919.944: https://www.artic.edu/artworks/76868/portrait-of-a-ladakhi-mountain-goat
🆔 “The Changthangi [aka Changpa, Ladakh Pashmina, Kashmiri] is a breed of cashmere goat native to the high plateaus of Ladakh in northern India. It is closely associated with the nomadic Changpa people of the Changthang plateau….The intense cold of the region causes the goats to grow a thick undercoat, which is harvested to produce the fine pashmina grade of cashmere.”

do you ever do non-digital work?
I no longer make finished artworks non-digitally. It's too expensive.
I've been trying to keep a sketchbook again, but it never ends well. Here's some of my traditional work from my college years... (click for full image)

^^These are from mid 2017... artist loft watercolor base, then I went in with a fine line sharpie. The one with the map was done with these markers that where meant to color stamps, I think..

Late 2018(?)^^ Acrylic!

^^ 2019. The fruit where done with watered down acrylic and gouache. The portraits are done with an ink brush pen. The frogs were painted with india ink on shrinky ink paper. (I was able to make the ink opaque by mixing it with a little bit of white ink)
I have a long history of traditional art and lots of different mediums, but it's expensive and takes up space. Wish I could draw and paint like that again, but I think it's something that's going to stay in my past.
