INDw vs AUSw Pink Ball Test: India declared innings for 377, Australia lost 4 wickets for 143 runs
gold coastIndian women’s bowlers put up a strong performance against a strong Australia as the hosts overcame difficulties under floodlights to score 143 for four at stumps on the third day of the rain-hit one-day Women’s Cricket Test on Saturday. Veteran fast bowler Jhulan Goswami (27/2) bowled brilliantly to take two wickets for Australia, which at one point made their score 63 for two. At the…

India had won ODI series in NZ only once in 2009. Baring that series, India hardly won any ODI games in NZ. In last tour in 2014, India tied 1 match and lost 4. India had their confidence up after series win in Australia. India took that confidence to first ODI in Napier. Shami gave India a great start with real zip in his bowling. He dismissed both the openers Guptill and Munro in return. NZ 18-2. Taylor and Williamson took NZ past 50. Kohli introduced Chahal who turned the match on its head. He dismissed Taylor and Latham in space of 5 overs. NZ 76-4. NZ lost wickets at regular intervals post that. Williamson who was dropped when at 10 earlier on made yet another fifty. He couldn’t rescue NZ though as Kuldeep ran through lower order. He grabbed 4 wickets. Shami had 3  wickets. NZ just managed 157. They were dismissed in 38 overs which was staggering. Dhawan and Rohit started off well. Though Rohit got out when score was 41 for India, there was no sign of NZ fightback. Dhawan made a fifty after 9 games. Kohli made 46. India won by 8 wickets with 91 balls to spare !!. That was as huge a win that India can ever imagine off.
In Women’s ODI, Bist and Poonam Yadav bowled brilliantly to restrict NZ to 192 in Napier. NZ were well placed at 119-3 but collapsed to guile of Indian spinners. Mandhana and Rodrigues made a mockery of a chase with a 190 opening stand. Mandhana brought up 4th ODI hundred.  She hit 3 sixes and 9 fours. India won by 9 wickets. Rodrigues was unbeaten at 81.
After winning first ODI, SA had their back to the walls . Phehlukwayo grabbed 4 wickets as Pakistan just managed 203. They were 112-8 at one stage. Fifty by Hasan Ali and 80 stand with captain Sarfraz ensured Pakistan had a total to defend. Shaheen reduced SA to 29-3. 2 quick blows by Shadab reduced SA to 80-5. Pakistan had chance to bounce back into the game.  Phehlukwayo who starred with the bowl did the magic with the bat as well . He made 69 of 80 balls and shared 127 run stand with Van De Dussen who hit an unbeaten 80.  In first test between WI and England, WI chose to bat first. WI started brilliantly as fifty by Hope and good 40s by openers Brathwaite and Campbell took WI to 126-1. WI lost a bit of way post that as England reduced them to 174-4. Fifties by Chase and Hetmyer ensured WI had a decent total. WI made 189. Hetmyer topped the score with 81.  England batsmen though never looked settled. Roach and Holder ripped apart top order. From 23-0, England were reduced to 49-7 inside 13 overs. That’s was staggering turnaround. Roach grabbed a 5-fer as England were dismissed for a mere 77. Foakes or Sam Curran who rescued England all through in Lanka series failed this time. 212 lead looked match winning . WI openers had 50 stand. Ali and Stokes reduced SA to 61-5. Dowrich and Hetmyer steadied things with a 59 run stand. Post that Holder scored a brisk fifty of 69 balls to take WI lead past 400. It was their match to lose from here on
Lanka had struggled in test in recent times. It continued in Australia . It was a pink ball Day night test match. Richardson and Cummins starred to dismiss Lanka for 144. Though Lakmal and co rediced Australia to 82-4, Head and Labuschagne steadied Australia with what can be a match winning 166 run stand. Australia were quickly dismissed for 323 post that. If that partnership is removed, Australia fared as poorly as Lanka. Lakmal grabbed 5-fer . Lanka ended day at 17-1 still trailing by 162 runs. They need somebody to stand like Pujara did. If Lanka score 350, It could be an interesting battle. But its more likely that Australia will win by an innings
Ranji SF kick-started. Kerala vs Vidarbha match lasted just about 106 overs !!! Umesh Yadav grabbed 7-48 as Kerala were dismissed for just 106 inside 29 overs. Kerala did well to restrict Vidarbha to 208. But Kerala showed no fight as another 5 fer by Umesh gave Vidarbha a victory by an innings and 11 runs. Pitch need to be questioned when match just lasted 106 overs !!!  2nd SF was more evenly matched. Karnataka batted first against Saurashtra in Bengaluru. Unadkat reduced Karnataka to 30-4. Nair and Mayank hardly troubled the scorers. Manish Pandey came to the rescue again with a quick fire fifty. He and Shreyas Gopal had 106 stand to steady Karnataka innings. 87 by Shreyas and a brilliant 83 by Sharath gave Karnataka a respectable score of 275. It didn’t look match winning but they had a decent score on the board. Though More 2 wickets reduced Saurashtra to 63-3, Karnataka struggled to pick wickets post that. Saurashtra score looked dominant at 137-2. Shreyas Gopal gave ray of hope by dismissing Patel for 85. Mithun dismissed the big fish Pujara for 46. Saurashtra 178-4. It looked like Saurashtra would get closer to Karnataka total without any loss of wickets by end of day 2. But More changed the mathc in last 30 minutes. He grabbed 3 wickets to reduce Saurashtra to 227-7 by end of day2. Karmataka have genuine chance of grabbing lead here which looked highly unlikely when Karnataka were at 30-4.
In Aus Open women’s QF, Collins beat Pavlyuchenkova in 3 set thriller. She setup SF clash with Kvitova who outclassed Sharapova conqueror Barty in straight sets. Osaka was too good for Svitolina. There was possible rematch of Osaka vs Serena in SF. Serena faced Pliskova in final QF. Pliskova looked brilliant for first 1.5 sets when she didn’t even face a break point. She lead 3-2 in second set with a break. Serena bounced back in typical style to win the 2nd set 6-4. She raced ahead 5-1 in 3rd set. She had 4 match points there after which she couldn’t convert. Most stunning thing happened thereafter. Pliskova won 6 games in a row to reach SF. Haven’t seen Serena choke like that before?? Did she carry an injury? In SF, Kvitova dismissed Collins from her presence 7-6 6-0.In other SF, Osaka was given a tough fifght by Pliskova. They shared first 2 sets. Pliskova had breakpoint in first game but couldn’t convert. Osaka gained confidence from that. She won the set 6-4 to storm to her 2nd slam finals in a row. In last 3 years, no women’s player has won 2 slams in a row. Would be interesting to see if Osaka can do that!!
In Aus open men’s QF, Tsitsipas continued his dream run by dismissing Bautista in 4 sets to reach his maiden slam SF. Next Gen in tennis has finally arrived. His real test was against Nadal or Djokovic who had show rich vein of form. Nadal looked in stunning form as he hardly gave Tifoe a chance in QF to win it 6-3 6-4 6-2.Nadal was never broken in the match. He just faced 2 break points. His serve has been so dominant in this Australian open that he has faced break points for just 15 occasions and broken just twice. Both the breaks happened in first round match. He has not been broken for 4 matches .It was actually 5 matches as he humiliated Tsitsipas 6-2 6-4 6-0 in 105 minutes. It was a tennis master class from Spanish Raging Bull. He looked in roaring form. He just faced break point just once and that was in final game !!. In other half of the draw, Nishikori didn’t have any energy left to play Djokovic after playing 3 five setters and 2 super tiebreakers in last 9 days. He retired half way into 2nd set. Djokovic would face Pouille in SF who shocked Raonic in 4 sets. It was maiden SF for Pouille as well. If Nadal ended match a 6-0 set, Djokovic started 6-0 against Pouille. He just lost 4 games in entire match. Ndal lost 6 matches. Nadal and Djokovic’s exhibition just showcases that Next Gen have miles to travel before they reach this level of tennis. This would be their 53rd meeting. Djokovic leads head to head 27-25. Djokovic had the better of the rivalry in last 4 years. Nadal last beat Djokovic in slam was in 2014 French open. He last beat him in Hardcourt in slam was in 2013 US open finals. In Australian open, they played just once in 2012 finals. Djokovic won that match 7-5 in final set after Nadal was 5-3 up.  Nadal has great record in Australian open but has lost 3 finals here. In terms of finals win conversion, Australian open has been his weak point. Can’t wait for final to start between Spanish Raging Bull and Serbian Legnd !!!
