Day 5 of our Wales tour has also had great weather. We left Ludlow and our first stop was Stanner Rocks near Old #Radnor to see 700ma gabbro which is possibly the oldest rock in Wales and England. We then headed on through the Radnor Forest to reach the #ElanValley. We then stopped at the #Cwmystwyth mines where Abby explained the #industrialarchaeology and James showed everyone how to find #galena and #chalcopyrite. Next was an underground tour in the #Llywernog lead silver mine, before arriving in #Aberystwyth to check out the classic #turbidite deposits and to stay the night. (at Aberystwyth Beach)

One for the Bristol Railway Anecdotes file. This is an old level crossing gatepost, on the railway line that ran alongside Anchor Road and Hotwells Road - its route is now pretty hard to spot. The post itself is made from two lengths of rail bolted back to back. I would have been standing on the railway, looking up the line, when the railway was here. Apparently the box for this crossing was one of the smallest on the GWR; the crossing-keeper's armchair barely fitted inside it. #bristol #igersbristol #railway #GWR #archaeology #industrialarchaeology
