In 2019 these stakeholders published a report identify a number of potential strategies, such as cleaning and reusing entire hard drives, removing and reusing magnet sets, shredding old hard drives, and using dust to make new ones and extract rare earth elements purified from the crushed units. Each of these strategies has its own challenges: removing sets of magnets by hand requires a lot of labor; the extraction of rare earths from technology can be chemical or energy intensive and produce significant waste, and in order for any of them to expand, many actors in the global supply chains need to be involved.

Making even the relatively minor supply chain adjustments needed to place used or recycled rare earth magnets inside new disks “is difficult,” Jin said. “And especially when you have to start with a small amount with new technology.”

However, some companies have begun to take the first steps. In 2018, Google, hard drive maker Seagate, and electronics restorer Recontext (formerly Teleplan) carried out a small demonstration project that consisted of removing the sets of magnets from six hard drives and col. locate them in new Seagate units. This demonstration, says Frost, was the “catalyst” for the larger study in 2019 in which 6,100 sets of magnets were extracted from Seagate hard drives in a Google data center before inserting them into disks. new hard drives in a Seagate factory. He results, which will be published in a future issue of the magazine Resources, conservation and recycling, not only did it show that rare earth magnets could be harvested and reused on a large scale, but there were significant environmental benefits in doing so. Frost says this estimate conservatively took into account the energy mix of the local power grid where the data center operated. Google declined to say if it has any follow-up projects under construction, but pointed Grist to his publicly announced goal to develop a scalable process for recycling rare earth magnets. Ines Sousa, the manager of Google’s environmental impact program and co-author of the new study, says there are some challenges that still need to be overcome before this becomes a reality.

These include the need for extreme cleaning during magnet recycling “as modern hard drives are very sensitive to small particles” and the fact that hard drives are constantly changing, leading to new magnet designs every few days. years.

“There is an opportunity to make the design of magnets constant between generations so that the reuse process can escalate,” Sousa said.

Seagate spokesman Greg Belloni told Grist that the company is “committed to working to resolve the complexity” of rare earth recycling in “close collaboration with customers.” Another of its customers, computer maker Dell, is exploring a different recycling approach.

In 2019, Dell launched a pilot program with Seagate and Recontext to harvest magnets from computer hard drives (collected using a Dell recovery program), crush them, extract rare earths, and use them to make new magnets. So far, some 19,000 pounds of rare earth magnets have been harvested for recycling through this collaboration. The project “remains a pilot program as we continue to look for ways to scale within our own operations,” Dell spokesman Mel Derome told Grist.

While it may be years before rare earth magnets are massively recycled through any approach, the Biden administration could help accelerate those efforts. Through the Institute of Critical Materials of the National Laboratory of Ames, the federal government is already funding various projects focused on developing cleaner and more efficient processes for recycling rare earth elements from magnets. In a recent one report on strengthening supply chain resilience, administration officials wrote that the 4,000 U.S. government-run data centers represent a “short-term opportunity” to harvest rare earth magnets through this type of federally funded research and development.

Rund um Kap Hoorn, Teil 3

Von Kap Hoorn nach Buenos Aires

Vierzehn Tage bin ich auf der Celebrity Infinity „Rund um Kap Hoorn“ unterwegs. (To the English blog) Für meine Kunden, die ich wieder einmal begleite und mich ist das nächste Ziel Puerto Madryn mit der Halbinsel Valdés, nachdem Kap Hoorn  umrundet ist.

Kaum liegt Kap Hoorn hinter uns, fahren wir wieder Richtung Norden und da wir uns auf der Südhalbkugel unserer schönen Erde befinden heißt das, in Richtung Wärme. Zwei Seetage braucht das Schiff, um im Hafen von Puerto Madryn anzulegen. Nach der Kälte in Ushuaia und am Kap, tut die Wärme hier richtig gut. T-Shirt Wetter kann ich da nur sagen!

Halbinsel Valdés

Seadane, unser Veranstalter mit dem wir unterwegs sind, hat uns einen Ganztagesausflug zur Halbinsel Valdés gebucht.  Die ganze Halbinsel Valdés ist ein Naturreservat und UNESCO Welterbe und es wird eine Eintrittsgebühr fällig, um dort hinein zu kommen. Ein kleines Informationszentrum über die Halbinsel Valdés, nicht weit vom Eingang entfernt, ist eine gute Quelle für Informationen, was die hiesige Tier- und Pflanzenwelt betrifft.

An der Straße sehen wir schon bald Eulen, Guanacos, diese niedliche Lamaart, und  Nandus, eine Straussenart.

Bald halten wir auch an einem Parkplatz, von wo wir Robben beobachten können. Im argentinischen Frühling sind hier auch viele Wale zu beobachten, u.a. auch Orcas, die hier auf Robbenjagt gehen und fast bis auf den Strand schwimmen. Leider ist die Walzeit im Januar vorbei.

Dafür beobachten wir aber die niedlichen und possierlichen Magellan-Pinguine, deren Küken bereits fast so groß wie ihre Eltern sind und vorn schon ihr adultes Federkleid haben. Auf dem Rücken sind sie noch ganz flauschig und braun. An der Steilküste finden sich auch viele versteinerte Fossilien, die natürlich nicht mitgenommen werden dürfen.

Ein toller Tag ist das!  In der Walsaison sind die riesigen Meeressäuger nicht nur hier auf der Halbinsel Valdés zu sehen, sondern sogar von der Stadt aus, so nah kommen sie an die Küste. Ich glaube, ich muss irgendwann mal im argentinischen Frühling hier her kommen…

Weiter fahren wir mit dem Schiff, wir kommen in Uruguay an, genauer gesagt in

Punta del Este

In der Hauptsaison, also jetzt im Sommer, ist dieser eigentlich kleine Ort mit ca. 20.000 Einwohnern ein mondäner Ferienort mit einem vielfachen an zumeist argentinischen Besuchern. Bis zu 700.000 kommen jährlich.

Nachdem wir zum Hafen getendert sind, spaziere ich mit meinen Mitreisenden durch den Ort und komme vom Hafen ganz schnell auf die andere Seite der Landzunge, wo sich das Wahrzeichen des Ortes befindet. Eine riesige Hand, die aus dem Sand des Strandes Playa Brava herausragt.

Besonders interessant finde ich Punta del Este nicht, für meinen Geschmack gibt es hier zu viele Hochhäuser. Aber die Bootsfahrt, das Tendern zum Schiff ist angenehm, eine leichte, warme Brise auf der Haut, Salzgeschmack auf den Lippen, das tut gut.

Montevideo

in Uruguay. Es ist zwar eine Millionenstadt, aber das kommt mir wirklich nicht so vor. Wir machen eine Stadtrundfahrt und besuchen ganz unterschiedliche Stadtviertel.

Was auffällt ist, dass Montevideo eine sehr grüne Stadt ist, mit vielen kleinen und größeren Parks und teilweise uralten Bäumen. Eines der berühmtesten Denkmäler schauen wir uns natürlich auch an. La Carreta, das Bronzedenkmal stellt einen Wagenzug dar, der von Ochsen gezogen wird. Er wurde von dem berühmten Künstler José Belloni entworfen und 1934 eingeweiht.

Es gibt in Montevideo auch einen alten Stadtteil, der direkt am Meer liegt und wenn ich es nicht besser wüsste, würde ich sagen, ich bin in einem alten deutschen Dorf mit Fachwerkhäusern.

An der Rambla México, Ecke Costa Rica halten wir und steigen aus. Es ist heiß, es ist fast Mittag und vor mir liegt ein ewig langer, breiter, ganz feinsandiger Strand und warmes, himmelblaues Meerwasser. Was interessieren mich jetzt noch die Fachwerkhäuser, die gibt es in Deutschland ja ohne Ende, ich will wenigstens meine Füße ins Meer halten, denn natürlich machen wir hier keine Pause. Herrlich, der warme Sand und das lauwarme Wasser. Hier könnte ich direkt Urlaub machen!

Pause machen wir am Montevideo Agricultural Market. Eine Markthalle mit kleinen Ständen und Geschäften und vielen verschiedenen kleinen Restaurants. Hier findet jeder etwas passendes für seinen Geschmack.

Dann geht es auch schon zurück zur Celebrity Infinity, die im Zentrum der Altstadt im Hafen angedockt hat. Da es noch ein bisschen hin ist bis wir wieder an Bord sein müssen, laufe ich zu Fuß noch in die Altstadt. Hier gibt es ein paar autofreie Straßen mit vielen kleinen Läden. Einheimische Handwerker und Künstler verkaufen hier Ihre Werke, genauso, wie den üblichen Touristenkitsch.

Zum Frühstück am vorletzten Morgen liegen wir schon im Hafen von

Buenos Aires

Industriehafen trifft es besser, daher können wir auch nur mit einem Shuttlebus zum Passagierterminal fahren.

Hier erwartet uns schon ein Bus zur Stadtrundfahrt. Vieles kommt mir sehr bekannt vor von meinem letzten Aufenthalt hier im Dezember 2016. Wieder ist es unglaublich warm. Buenos Aires ist eine Stadt mit unglaublich vielen kulturellen Möglichkeiten. Der Tango ist natürlich ganz wichtig, aber wie man uns in Uruguay sagte, sei er dort erfunden worden. Ich weiß es nicht und es ist mir auch egal, denn zu Hause haben ich einen argentinischen Lehrer, der meinem Mann und mir das Tangotanzen beibringt.

Immer wieder kreuzen wir die Avenida 9 de Julio mit dem großen Obelisken, denn viele Querstraßen sind Einbahnstraßen. An der Avenida Alicia Moreau de Justo 1500 überqueren wir einen Flussarm, vermutlich war das mal eine Schleuse. Der Blick über ein Neubauviertel ist toll, trotzdem und gerade, weil alte Elemente, wie Lastkräne stehen geblieben sind.

Das alte Viertel La Boca mit seinen bunten Häusern, den Tangobars und seinen Künstlern hat es mir besonders angetan. Gern würde ich hier ein wenig länger entlang schlendern und dieses besondere Flair von marodem Charme weiter genießen, aber wir müssen weiter.

Natürlich besuchen wir auch den berühmten Friedhof La Recoleta, wo u. a. auch Eva Perón in dem Familiengrab ihrer Eltern bestattet wurde.

Durchgeschwitzt und voll mit vielen neuen Eindrücken kommen wir gerade rechtzeitig zum  Schiff zurück, um uns zum Abendessen fertig machen zu können.

Das ist also die letzte Nacht an Bord der Celebrity Infinity auf meiner Reise „Rund um Kap Hoorn“. Schön war es und es gab so viel zu sehen.
