Capacitive charging leakage current (IC ) occurs when two or more conductors are run together and act as a capacitor. This flows as the dc voltage is applied and drops out after the insulation has been charged to its full test voltage.

Polarization absorption leakage current (IA ) is caused by the polarization of molecules within the dielectric material. In most equipment, the capacitive current and polarization current are relatively high and decline over time. This will show up as a low initial megohm reading that steadily increases over time.

Insulation Resistance Test Applications Any of the following preventive maintenance tests can be used to test insulation resistance on generators, transformers, motors and electrical systems. In order to get a stable insulation value in about a minute, the test should only be carried out on devices with a low capacitance. The step voltage test tests resistance at various voltage settings. In this test, you apply each test voltage for the same amount of time (typically 60 seconds) and record the recorded insulation resistance. As increasingly higher voltages are applied, the insulation is subjected to increased electrical stresses that can reveal insulation failures such as holes, physical damage, or embrittlement. The absorption/dielectric strength test over time compares the absorption properties of a contaminated insulation with those of a good insulation. The test voltage is applied for a period of 10 minutes and data is logged every 10 seconds for the first minute and every minute thereafter. The interpretation of the slope of the recorded diagram determines the condition of the insulation. Another method to determine the insulation quality is the polarization index (PI). It is particularly useful for detecting ingress of moisture and oil which flatten the PI curve, leading to leakage currents and possibly shorting the windings.

The polarity index is the ratio of two resistance measurements over time: one at 1 minute and the other at 10 minutes. With good insulation, the insulation resistance starts out low and increases as the capacitive leakage and sink currents decrease. Results are obtained by dividing the 10 minute test value by the 1 minute test value. A low polarization index usually indicates isolation problems.
